Russian foreign minister says China next target of West

Russian foreign minister says China next target of West
Tumblr media
Moscow (The Times Groupe) – Russian Foreign Minister Segey Lavrov said Friday that the West is “not hiding” that China is the next target after Russia, as well as any country that “dares to act independently.” times
“They do not hide that when Russia, as they put it, is ‘defeated,’ China will be the next target as well as any country that dares to act independently and decides to be guided by its national interests, and not by what the US and the other Western countries determine,” Lavrov said, speaking at a news conference in Ankara after meeting his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu.
Western statements that it is not the right time to declare a cease-fire and arms supplies to Kyiv indicate the West does not want to resolve Ukraine’s conflict, according to Lavrov.
Furthermore, he warned that if the Russian part of the Black Sea Grain Initiative is not implemented, then Moscow may reconsider its stance and work with Qatar and Turkey to export grain.
“We were forced to go for a slight escalation and extend the grain only for 60 days. If there is no further progress, we will rethink,” he said.
As a result of the existence of “corridors of solidarity,” through which Ukraine exports its products to Europe by land routes, Lavrov said the grain deal is even more in doubt.
Turkish, UN, Russian, and Ukrainian officials signed an agreement in Istanbul last July to resume grain exports from three Ukrainian Black Sea ports that had been halted since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022. In November, the deal was extended for 120 days and in March, for another 60 days.

The United Nations demanded a probe into the nearly 100 migrants found naked along the Greece-Turkey border, condemning the "cruel and degrading" treatment of the group that included children.
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees "is deeply distressed by the shocking reports and images of 92 people, who were reported to have been found at the Greek-Turkish land border, stripped of their clothes," the agency tweeted on Sunday.
"We condemn such cruel and degrading treatment and call for a full investigation into this incident," the tweet added.
Greek police said Saturday that police officers found 92 migrants, mostly men from Afghanistan and Syria, stark naked on Friday, "some with bodily injuries." They used plastic boats to cross the Evros River — known as Meric in Turkey — which forms the border between the two countries.
LONDON DJ KIDNAPPED, FORCED INTO VAN ALONGSIDE WOMAN TURNS UP DEAD AS POLICE MAKE 4TH ARREST
Children were also among the group of migrants, Stella Nanou, the UN refugee agency’s spokesperson in Athens, told The Guardian.
Greek migration minister Notis Mitarachi on Saturday tweeted a photo of the naked migrants seen cupping their genitals, accusing Turkey of pushing them into Greece and stripping them naked before doing so. The claim prompted Fahrettin Altun, the communications director of Turkey’s president, to accuse Greece of engaging in "fake news."
On Monday, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, again rejected the allegation and accused Athens of "shameless and reckless" behavior. He also took aim at European Union nations, accusing them of encouraging EU-member Greece to "slander" Turkey.
The Greek government’s spokesman, Giannis Oikonomou, charged that Turkey was "continuing to openly instrumentalize migrants and even with unprecedented and unthinkable practices of barbarism."
The exchange comes at a time when tensions between the two neighbors is running high, with the two engaging in mutual accusations of airspace violations and Turkey accusing Greece of militarizing islands in the Aegean Sea in violation of international treaties and threatening possible military action.
"To be able to appear right even when you are in the wrong like Greece - you need to be shameless and reckless. It’s only Greece that can achieve this," Çavuşoğlu said at a news conference at the end of meeting in Istanbul of the foreign ministers of Turkic states.
"It is natural that Greece ... attempts to slander Turkey as its crimes increases," Cavusoglu said. "Unfortunately, there are European Union member countries who want to believe this, who want to accept everything that Greece says as true ... This is what encourages Greece."
Turkey regularly accuses Greece of violently pushing back migrants entering the country by land and sea. Turkey’s coast guard frequently shares videos of such pushbacks. Greece accuses Turkey, which hosts the largest number of refugees in the world, of "pushing forward" migrants to put pressure on the EU.
"This inhuman behavior is a disgrace to civilization, and the Turkish leadership, instead of blaming others for what is happening on its territory, should investigate the incident, punish those directly involved and honor its obligations under its Joint Declaration with the EU," the Greek government spokesman said in reference to a 2016 deal to stem the arrival of refugees.
On Monday, Turkey’s Interior Ministry said in a statement that a total of 61,737 migrants had been illegally pushed back from Greece since 2020, and that 152 migrants died as a result of the pushbacks. So far this year, 26,363 migrants were illegally forced back and 59 of them died, the ministry said.

Israeli Herzog thanks Erdogan for Ankara’s efforts in combatting terrorism
Tumblr media
Istanbul (The Times Groupe)- The Israeli president Isaac Herzog in a phone call thanked his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan for Ankara’s efforts in combatting terrorism that Iran was trying to carry out a terror attack on Israelis in Turkey’s Istanbul over the weekend, Turkey’s Communications Directorate said on Sunday.
The Turkish president and the Israeli counterpart discussed Turkish-Israeli relations and regional affairs, the directorate said.
“The two leaders agreed to maintain cooperation for peace and stability as well as dialogue in their relations and regional matters, including security and terrorism,” the statement stated.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said during a visit to Israel last month that Turkey and Israel share a “common will” to improve relations.
“Even though there were difficult days, we decided to continue our relations,” Cavusoglu said.
It was Cavusoglu’s first visit to Israel in nearly 15 years.
Herzog had previously visited Ankara and met with Erdogan in March.

Tampere-based Aamulehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun) was among the many papers on Friday morning to cover the US putting pressure on its Nato allies.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the US is urging the last remaining Nato members to ratify Finland and Sweden's bids to join the alliance. Turkey and Hungary have yet to ratify Finland and Sweden's membership.
Blinken discussed the issue with Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto (Green) and Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Tobias Billström on Thursday by telephone. According to a statement by the US State Department, Blinken assured his Nordic counterparts that the US supports Finland and Sweden's Nato membership and believes that they are ready to join the alliance.
"We look forward to welcoming Finland and Sweden to Nato as soon as possible," Blinken wrote on Twitter (siirryt toiseen palveluun).
Blinken also assured both foreign ministers of strong bilateral relations between their countries.
The implementation of Finland and Sweden's Nato membership is pending ratification from Turkey and Hungary.
Hungary has promised to ratify the membership in early February, but Turkey has not given a timeline for ratification. Turkey has set several conditions for Finland and Sweden to meet before ratification, the most recent being the handover of 130 individuals it deems terrorists.
Turkish foreign minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu met with Blinken on Wednesday in the United States, where Cavusoglu attempted to expedite the sale of F-16 fighter jets.
According to media reports, the US government is willing to sell the fighter jets to Turkey. However, it is believed that the US wants to use the sale as leverage to get Turkey to approve Finland and Sweden joining Nato.
TikTok election fears
Helsingin Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) reported on concerns surrounding the social media platform TikTok and the upcoming parliamentary elections in April.
The China-based social media platform has already caused a fuss in the US over alleged threats to democracy, privacy and national security.
HS noted that in the run-up to the elections, there has been very little discussion about TikTok in Finland, despite its popularity. There are nearly 1.2 million people in Finland who use the service, according to social media marketing firm Troot.
"Politicians throughout the ages have used new media platforms and their mechanisms. I would be surprised if they don't try to use them in the current elections," Matti Nelimarkka, a researcher at Aalto University and the University of Helsinki, told HS. He has studied algorithms and political power in the digital environment.
HS pointed out that when searching TikTok with the keywords 'Finnish politics', the most popular videos are those dominated by the opposition Finns Party. The nationalist party which Prime Minister Sanna Marin (SDP) recently characterised as "openly racist", was the second-most popular among likely voters in a recent Yle poll.
It is unclear how TikTok's algorithm actually works, but it is known that a user with just a few followers can make a post that potentially garners millions of views.
That kind of "viral" exposure of a video could cause people seeing the content to think that the video's creator is some kind of an authority on politics or other subjects, according to the paper.
HS then raised the moral question of the platform, that even if someone merely watches a video, they can unwittingly help to raise its profile, even if they disagreed with its content.
"Hundreds of ships loaded with wind turbines"
Ostrobothnia-based paper Ilkka-Pohjalainen (siirryt toiseen palveluun) covered the arrival of the first ships carrying wind turbine components to the port of Kaskinen on Wednesday. The shipments included turbine blades from Spain and turbine towers from Turkey.
The small port on Finland's west coast bustled with activity as crane operators carefully unloaded the materials.
Historically, Kaskinen has typically been a port dominated by the export of Finnish sawmill products, but the port's CEO Patrik Hellman said that last year was a historically poor year for the port's wood business due to the war in Ukraine.
According to Hellman, the number of export ships carrying Finnish timber dropped to 287 for the whole year, a decrease of about 100 ships. He attributed the decline to the effects of the war in Ukraine, and was optimistic that over 300 ships would leave Kaskinen this year filled with Finnish wood.
However, Hellman noted that projects in Finland's 'wind belt' have brought a considerable amount of business to the port.
Wind power in Finland has increased (siirryt toiseen palveluun) in the past year as the country seeks alternatives to Russian energy and fossil fuels and the port of Kaskinen lies squarely in Finland's densest wind power area, on the country's west coast.
The turbine parts in the most recent shipment will be transported to a wind farm owned by energy companies Fortum and Helen in Närpes. For now though, the parts will be stored until they can be moved to the construction site, most likely in March.
"Because of this project, we will probably have 40-45 wind turbine ships coming in total, depending on the size of the ships. The next project is immediately after in Kurikka, and most likely those turbines will also come through here. Within the next 18 months, we will probably have around 100 of these wind turbine ships coming here," said Hellman.
