Nonfiction books I read in 2021
How the Irish Saved Civilization by Thomas Cahill
This is the first book I read with my virtual book club. I enjoyed the discussion and I learned a lot of surprising things from this book. I thought it would be about how Irish monks helped to preserve ancient documents; I didn’t realize how many Irish scholars actually went out to the Continent to establish schools during the Middle Ages. This actually sparked some pride in my Irish heritage!
South Asian Religions: Tradition and Today (re-read)
I want to get back into my comparative religious studies, so I’ve been picking up some of my old books here and there. This book was actually edited by one of my college professors. I read it cover-to-cover last winter - chapters on traditional tribal religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Sikhism, each with a lot to teach.
The End of Gender by Debra Soh
This is one of the most important books I read this year. A neuroscientist who specializes in the study of sexuality takes us into the hard science behind gender roles, sexual orientation, gender expression, and transgenderism.
Rule Makers/Rule Breakers by Michele Gelfand
This was another book club book. While I found a lot of it important, this author tries to shoehorn her insight into too many scenarios. Yes, it is helpful to understand the distinction between cultures that emphasize a high degree of conformity to social norms and those that emphasize individuality. However, it doesn’t explain away every problem in the entire universe.
The Dream of Reason and The Dream of Enlightenment by Anthony Gottlieb
I’m profoundly grateful that this man quit journalism and decided to write about philosophy for the masses. These books are an amazing introduction to the history of philosophy. They taught me a lot about philosophers I thought I already understood.
The Careless Society: Community and its Counterfeits by John McKnight
I found this in a used bookstore in New Paltz. It’s a couple of decades old I still found it applicable to today’s world. A big mistake that government agencies still make is acting like people just need to be serviced. People actually need to be engaged. They need to feel like they matter and that they are active members of a community.
The Silk Roads: A New History of the World by Peter Frankopan
Another book club book. I found it surprisingly poorly written for a British author, though he needs to be commended for taking on the feat of writing a history of the world. While I did learn a lot about some regions of the world I’d stereotyped as barren and unexciting, I thought he came across as too harsh on his own country and too lenient on everyone else. And the essential point of the book, that the most important events of history center around Central Asia and the Middle East, is not as surprising as he seems to think it is. And can his editor be fired and replaced with someone who properly cringes at the use of the passive voice in every other sentence, please?
A Pocket History of Human Evolution by Silvana Condemi
I’ve gotten really into learning about the origins of life, human evolution, and human prehistory over the past couple of years.
The Trouble with Physics by Lee Smolin
I just felt like reading this book because I started it a few years ago and never finished, so I made a point of finishing it. Interesting, though some of it was actually outdated lol (e.g. we found the Higgs boson). I want to try reading some of his newer books because he’s actually an engaging author.
The Gadfly Papers by Todd Eklof
This is a book of three essays by a Unitarian Universalist minister who, even as a progressive, got fed up with the “cancel culture” and “wokeness” within his church. I read it more out of an interest in comparative religion than anything else, and found it useful for that purpose. He has some good points about how his community was founded on the principles of radical free thought and yet was becoming more closed-minded and repressive year after year. He also has a useful section on the logical fallacies common in “wokeness,” “identity politics,” “critical race theory,” or whatever you want to call it. But I also think he’s mistaken in thinking he’s going to win over people who think talking about logic, reason, and the bedrock principles of Western civilization is “racist.” You can actually read my Goodreads review here!
Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are? by Frans de Waal
I found this to be one of the most engaging, interesting books I read all year. It exposes a lot of flaws in experiments on animal cognition and offers substantial evidence that animals’ thought processes are a lot more complex than we give them credit for. Though, I’d started to suspect that after becoming a cat owner!
Abusive Policies by Mical Raz
After leaving my work in child welfare, I read this book by a leftist doctor and scholar who wants child protective investigations and prosecutions decoupled from services. She also examined the history of child welfare services and how our society’s moral panic about child abuse has actually produced counterproductive and harmful policies. Even as a conservative, I agreed with a lot of her criticism of the conservatives’ role in perpetuating policies that hurt struggling families while doing little to help them.
Race and Culture: A World View by Thomas Sowell
Since I was already familiar with Thomas Sowell, I didn’t find everything in the book surprising, but I did learn a lot about the dynamics of race and culture; for example, I didn’t know about the cultural divides in Nigeria, or the treatment of Chinese people in Malaysia, or Indian immigrants in Africa. I don’t think Americans realize how normal it is to have ethnic and cultural conflict lol. I also really enjoyed the chapter on Race and Intelligence; it explained why we see discrepancies between groups and is an excellent refutation of racism.

hello  everyone,  here  comes  our  next  task  !  but  this  one  is  a  bit  more  significant  compared  to  the  others  as  we  will  have  this  one  as  a  preparation  for  a  future  event.  yes,  you  heard  it  right  !  a  future  event  !  let  us  present  you,  our  next  planned  event.  AGNES  GOES  TWENTY.  an  au  event  in  which  our  muses  will  be  back  in  their  20s.  this  is  an  au  event  hence  it  is  going  to  be  an  alternative  universe  and  none  of  the  events  of  this  au  will  affect  our  main  storyline.  we  have  thought  of  the  possibility  of  some  muns  not  wanting  to  participate,  that’s  why  non-au  threads  may  be  allowed  throughout  the  au  event  (  the  final  decision  will  be  made  upon  the  poll  over  discord  chat  ).  well,  if  i  get  the  drum  rolls,  it’s  time  to  explain  how  this  au  will  work  !
AGNES  GOES  TWENTY  :    a  planned  au  event  that  will  take  two  weeks  ooc.  during  this  au  week,  all  your  muses  will  be  back  in  their  twenties,  but  this  time,  they  are  living  their  days  of  adolescence  in  islesbury  alongside  every  other  muse  in  agnesfm  !  more  details  will  be  revealed  on  event  post  itself.
HOW  TO  PREPARE  (  AKA  THE  TASK  !  )  :  we  just  need  you  to  answer  the  following  parts,  no  depth  needed  for  part  two,  just  give  us  the  most  important  parts  !
who  will  your  muse’s  younger  fc  be  ?  note:  this  will  be  the  fc  you  are  going  to  use  during  the  au  week,  choose  wisely  !
for  this  au,  your  muse  will  be  living  in  islesbury  or  will  be  around  islesbury  for  the  time  being,  that  might  cause  drastic  changes  for  your  muses’  backstory  so  if there  are  any  drastic  changes,  let us know  by  writing  a  little  blurb  as  your  answer  to  this  part    ! ( OPTIONAL )
FAQ !
my  muse  spent  their  youth  somewhere  else  other  than  islesbury,  what  do  i  do  ?
we  ask  you  to  create  an  au  version  of  your  muses’  background  in  which  your  muse  will  be  residing in/around  islesbury  during  their  twenties.  it  doesn’t  have  to  be  anything  fully  fleshed  out  as  this  is  just  an  au  event  !  whatever  happens  in  au  event,  stays  in  the  au  event  &  has  no  effect  to  your  muses’  main  storyline.
my  muse  already  spent  their  youth  in  islesbury,  is  that  a  problem  ?
not  at  all,  that  means  you  do  not  need  to  change  anything  about  your  muse’s  past  (  but  you  can  if  you  wish  so  because  this  is  an  au  event,  nothing  that  happens  here  will  affect  agnesfm’s  original  story  )
are   we   rewinding  to  a  specific  time  ?
no,  it's  going  to  be  the  year  of  2021  with  the  only  change  being  our  muses  are  in  their  20s  !

Lost Lovers
@universeofmuses
Dr. Thomas “Tommy” Oliver is a Power Ranger veteran one of the oldest as well. Participating in many battles going so far as to serve in four ranger teams. Tommy had done so much in his life time something that not many people can do or have the ability  to do the same as the Powers Rangers. After his Ranger duties were done and TJ took over for him, he left for collage where he earned a Doctorate  in Paleontology in only six years after that he went to work for an Anton Mercer which things ended badly so he settled for a position as a high-school teacher. During that time he met three kids by the name of Conner McKnight, Ethan James and finally Kira Ford. He turned this Kids into Rangers to help fight his past little did he know that his past wasn't done with him just yet.
Principal Randall had  ordered hum to show the new teacher around as he didnt feel like arguing or getting on her bad side he decide that sure he do it, Beside he likes helping people and the New teacher must be freaking out after all Randall doesn't come across friendly. He made his way to the room where the new teacher would be he knocked on the door three times once he was clear to enter the room Tommy did and the face that greeted him was one of his former teammates and a Person he never thought he see again after composing himself he found his voice “Hey Kim what are you doing here wait dont tell me your the new teacher,” He stated the obvious. At times he thought that he was another a spell or something he definitely could say that his life is freaking insane and that would probably be an understatement  “So Kim why did you become a teacher when you had a promising career in pan global games” He  asked  her trying to understand her.

I’ve always taken some level of comfort in the holiday season. Wrapping gifts, decorating the tree, queuing up the holiday classics on the radio. There’s a repetition of the holidays and their associated festivities that I’ve always taken comfort in as a queer kid of color growing up. A welcomed pomp and circumstance to bookend any year, no matter how challenging or depressing. Over the years, I craved the kind of holiday cheer that could look and feel like me and the spaces that I occupied.
You don’t have to look too deeply to understand that Christmas and its pop culture breadcrumbs have historically been dominated by whiteness. The benchmarks of the holiday season are usually found in “A Christmas Story” marathons, Bing Crosby ditties, and Charlie Brown.
Tumblr media
Unbeknownst to most, an update on a classic was about to disrupt any antiquated, albeit comfortable, ideas of what constitutes a “classic” Christmas. The one driving a bulldozer through the most wonderful time of the year would be a crass, Black, bisexual, singing superstar with a pill problem and set of enemies ready to take her down. Her name is Ebony Scrooge.
The VH1 made-for-television film “A Diva’s Christmas Carol,” written/directed by Richard Schenkman debuted on December 13, 2000 and in the years since its debut would generate a loyal fanbase of viewers. The powers that be, having yet to see its underground following, leave viewers no choice but to pull out their DVD players every year, hope for a midnight cable viewing, or search through YouTube to satisfy the desire for this Christmas gem.
Here’s a glimpse into how Ebony flips Christmas on its head.
1. A Fabulous Spin on an Old Favorite
The film reimagines the classic Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” in a universe of late 90s era diva-dom. The iconic Ebenezer Scrooge is retooled as Ebony Scrooge, a Black pop/R&B princess with massive success but little love in her heart. One fateful night alongside some oddball spirits has her questioning her cold ways just in time for Christmas. Produced for television by VH1, it arrived right at the peak of its massively popular VH1 Divas Live series.
youtube
2. Starring THE Vanessa Williams
VH1 founds its Ebony Scrooge in Vanessa Williams. An acclaimed singer and actress, Williams was no stranger to success at the time. By the film’s release, she had five hit albums under her belt and more than a dozen Hot 100 entries to her name. Nor was she a stranger to Christmas, having released a popular holiday album in 1996. With hit movies and Broadway on her resume as well, there was no better choice to bring this Scrooge to life.
youtube
3. The Bitch is Back
Williams is no holds barred in her take on the classic Scrooge character. She vacillates between complete apathy and all-out bitchiness and finds every delightful opportunity in between to ham it up for the camera. In fact, Williams’ Ebony Scrooge caught the eye of the late Silvio Horta who campaigned to have her fill the role of another grand dame – Wilhelmina Slater on the hit show “Ugly Betty.”
youtube
4. No Shortage of Camp
Completely aware of its own ridiculousness and in on its own fun, “A Diva’s Christmas Carol” ups the camp and embeds clever one-liners and mounds of witty banter into its script. When Ebony comes face to face with her dead former friend and bandmate Marli Jacobs, the two spar in true Dynasty fashion about whether Jacobs is there to do her nails or warn her of her evil ways. Chock full of pop culture references, the film pokes fun at Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Bette Midler, and even a hilarious revelation of a tryst between Ebony and Anne Heche.
Tumblr media
5. Oh, the Fashions!
Moving across decades, the film anchors itself primarily in the 80s and 90s. So, for viewers, there’s quite the visual treat watching Williams and company play dress up in all the feathers, leather, fur and big hair that a boy playing dress up in his mother’s closet could ever dream of.
Tumblr media
6. Wildcard Supporting Cast
Add into this already delicious mix an utterly strange combination of supporting actors. Ebony’s bandmate Marli is played by Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas of TLC who appears in full on over-the-top dominatrix gear. Follow that with ghosts of Christmas past (a snarky Kathy Griffin), present (John Taylor of Duran Duran) and future (a literal episode of VH1’s Behind the Music – how’s that for a throwback?). Then toss in some cameos from Nile Rodgers and Brian McKnight for good
Tumblr media
7. Do I Feel a Heartquake?
For the icing on the cake, “A Diva’s Christmas Carol” is responsible for birthing one of the greatest fake 80s, holiday-adjacent, catchy AF songs by a non-existent girl group to ever come out of a television movie. Before striking solo, Ebony, Marli, and their friend Terry form the group Desire and hit big with their single “Heartquake.” The film weaves this pop gem throughout and I don’t know anyone that’s denied themselves the opportunity to hum along.
youtube
At its core though, the message living inside its protagonist’s messiness still rings true. “A Diva’s Christmas” never goes too far into the deep end of its own dramatics before pulling back to remind us of its heart. It pushes us to find some meaning in the holiday season – that same corny, comfy feeling that makes me excited for the month of December each year – and allows us to imagine our own festive worlds where the hair reaches the heavens, the gowns cling tight, and divas reign supreme.
