Stucky fic recs - a starter package
During a spiralling discussion about one of the best parts of the male physique (THIGHS) with @wastedonyoursmile and @legitcookie one man with his most stunning thighs (and his murder strut TM) came up: Bucky Barnes.
After finding out that Jen has not read any Stucky fic so far (*gasp*) I could not let that stand. As promised Jen (better late than never, aye?), have a starter package of my favorite Stucky fics:
The man on the bridge
One of the best and most devastating but also rewarding Stucky fics I’ve ever read. This one had me spiral down into obsession with this ship. If you want a good starting fic, this one is it. It’s canon up to Winter Soldier and goes AU after it. It’s regarded a fandom classic for a reason 😉
Start at Part 3 in the series (that’s where the link goes) and then go from there.
Summary:
Steve Rogers turning up at Tony's door in the middle of the night might be a bit out of character, but it's not completely out of the realm of possibility. Stranger things have happened.
Steve Rogers turning up at Tony's door with an amnesiac assassin - who may or may not have some of Tony's personally designed hardware attached where his arm should be - well that's just far too interesting to turn away, even if Tony is trying to avoid all things S.H.I.E.L.D these days.
Sorry about the blood in your mouth
A short and funny one, I just loved the outsider perspective. You should read this last, probably, after you dived into the dynamic of all the characters. Makes you appreciate the lightness and humor and dynamic in this one even more. But beware, it also deals with Bucky’s trauma, so it’s not all shit and giggles. But I guess, that’s a given in this fandom.
Summary:
Adventures in babysitting. Or, Natasha says it isn't babysitting, but Clint's not convinced that they haven't somehow adopted an amnesiac super assassin, but he's going with it.
The one where Clint Barton believes in waffles and Bucky Barnes.
Revenant
I don’t really know what to say about this one, just go along for the ride. It deserves its warnings but, in my opinion, it was nothing way worse than what you can gather from the movies. It just deals with the trauma that comes with being a kept and brainwashed weapon by hydra. Loved the plot twist of him taking Steve hostage instead of leaving him behind.
Summary:
Post-movie AU in which Bucky didn’t just leave Steve on a river bank...he took him.
Ain't No Grave (Can Keep My Body Down)
I can and did scream forever about this one. A formative reading experience for sure. Another fandom classic for a reason. It’s funny, it’s dirty, it hurts, it heals. It has everything. A different read on Steve and Bucky than some other fics if you ask me but an interesting one and very consistent and convincing in their characterization. The side characters alone make this one extremely enjoyable. It’s one of the longest fics here but definitely worth every second.
Summary:
It's six in the morning, and Steve is heading out on a run when he nearly trips over a bouquet of sunflowers on the front steps of his brownstone.
For a second paranoia takes over, and he kicks the flowers a little, waiting for them to explode. They don't. They also came with a card, which he picks up. The front of the card has a tasteful picture of the Brooklyn bridge at sunset. It's very nice and sedate, like the kind of card you would buy to give to your boss. On the inside someone has written a short message in big, shaky block letters.
I AM SORRY FOR SHOOTING YOU.
Steve sits down hard on the steps.
to memory now I can't recall
Have some time travel AU! Loved that one because it explores Bucky and the Winter Soldier as two different entities that still have a lot in common. Mostly their love for one Steve Grant Rogers. It’s another one where I also adored the side characters, especially the Howling Commando members. It’s a very long one but you’ll finish it before you know. Lots of humor and action with a sprinkle of pain and heartbreak but a very satisfying ending (imo).
Summary:
While on a mission storming a HYDRA facility, James Buchanan Barnes touches one of the many strange alien devices collected by the Red Skull. He does this, in fact, twice— in the past, and in the future.
Next thing he knows, Bucky Barnes is opening his eyes in the 21st century, which is full of great gadgets and coffee, and at least includes his old pal Steve. (And, inexplicably, a different Stark.) Meanwhile, the Winter Soldier finds himself in the middle of World War Two, helping Captain America hunt down HYDRA (which is at least familiar), pretending to be Bucky Barnes (which is not), and figuring out the very noisy group of soldiers who call themselves the Howling Commandos.
lonely houses off the road
Last but not least another one that’s just hilarious. If you like Sam and his at times awkward dynamic with Bucky, this is the one for you. It had me howling with laughter but it’s also really sweet. And short. Give it a read if you need a pick me up – it will definitely do that.
Summary:
Barnes is now glaring at him for some reason. It's somewhat terrifying but also, oddly, a little reassuring— because that's emotion right there, which means there's still somebody behind those eyes. Somebody who seems to think Sam is being a bit slow on the uptake. "Time parameters exceeded. Mission failed."
"Wait." Sam narrows his eyes. "Is this some kind of... report? Debriefing?"
"Mission report," confirms Barnes, looking pleased. Well, looking slightly less murderous than before.
In which various people deal with things they never signed up for, but at the end of the day no one's particularly surprised.
