it’s time fooor: jinny’s ultimate ranking of the one piece movies!!
i’ve excluded episode of alabasta and episode of chopper because they’re essentially arc recaps and nowadays would’ve been considered “specials”.
this list is based 50% on the films’ technical level of goodness and 50% on my personal taste lol.  by ranking i don’t actually mean they’re ranked best to worst, just my favorite to my least favorite.
1) movie 6: baron omatsuri and the secret island
this film is not to everyone’s taste, but i absolutely love it.  i love the director, mamaru hosoda (director of wolf children, girl who leapt through time, etc) and his art style.  it’s kinda weird and gets pretty body horror-y, but i’m into that personally so i don’t mind.  i definitely don’t recommend this as a first intro to one piece because it really doesn’t carry the vibe of the overall series, but that’s kinda why i love it.  i’ve already read the series.  i don’t need a movie to show me exactly what i’ve already seen.  i like that movie 6 takes risks and does stuff oda wouldn’t necessarily have done, because it’s fun and new.
2) film gold
the soundtrack, art and animation of this movie are STUNNING.  it has a beautiful setting.  i still listen to “gold and jive” when i’m jogging.  this film is also home to carina and gil tesoro, my ALL TIME FAVORITE non-canon characters.  it’s gorgeous, it’s really fun, and it definitely captures the spirit of one piece.  while movie 6 is my personal favorite, i consider film gold to be the actual best one piece film in terms of animation/plot/characters.
3) film z
aka: most people’s favorite movie lmao.  and not for no reason.  it has stunning art/animation.  the hot springs scene is 👌 👌 👌 👌 👌.  zephyr is definitely one of the better non-canon villains too, and i liked how they utilized aokiji in the movie too.  if you like the fighting part of one piece, this is the movie for you, because there is A LOT of fighting and it’s all very cool.  the only reason it’s lower down for me is because i’m personally not that into fighting, and i prefer the larger storylines and atmospheres (??) of the above films.
4) strong world
another beautifully animated movie.  it has a gorgeous setting- a chunk of forest floating in the sky- and it has some really fun character moments.  it also is the only one piece movie to have a CANON villain, tho the events of the movie are still non-canon.  really cool stuff, some hella badass outfits, and hits good emotional chords.
5) movie 4: dead end adventure
this is a really fun movie.  it doesn’t have the unbelievable animation level of the other films i’ve mentioned, but it looks nice, and 100% feels like one piece.  it’s just a really funny, engaging movie and the non-canon character side plot is surprisingly....not terrible.  if you interact with japanese/korean one piece fandom at all, you probably know just how much they weirdly love shureiya lol (a non-canon side character in this movie)
6) movie 5: the cursed holy sword
this one ran a little long and felt a little ooc to me, but it was still fun.  it has a very interesting set up of zoro seemingly betraying the crew, but i felt like the emotional follow up there should’ve been to such a situation kinda wasn’t there.  it has a lot of fun antics with usopp and luffy though, and i thought the climax had a cool dramatic atmosphere.  overall a good watch.
7) movie 3: chopper’s kingdom on the island of strange animals
the art in this one seemed a little weird to me, but it also had some cool color work and animation.  it’s not extremely memorable, but i enjoyed watching it.  usopp’s really funny in this movie.  if you like chopper you’ll probably like it???  since it has a focus on him lol.
8) movie 2: clockwork island adventure
this is a cute little movie.  at one point the straw hats all are dressed in wedding clothes for no reason, if that inspires you to watch it.  i’m biased towards the....pastel steampunk aesthetic of it as well haha; i just really liked the coloring.  it’s not particularly memorable in any aspect, but i really enjoyed it and i liked how the art style looks just like oda’s (as opposed to some of the movies, which got kinda off with the art)
9) movie 7: the giant mechanical soldier of karakuri castle
i feel like i’m ranking this lower than i should, but i honestly find the art in this movie to be ugly and off model.  it wasn’t to my taste.  it also felt like it ran a little long.  nonetheless, there were some fun moments, and i liked the steampunk vibe and setting in this one as well.  .....also, chopper isn’t voiced by his usual voice actress in this movie which threw me for a loop while watching it lol.  it definitely isn’t terrible tho- none of these movies are- i just happen to like the previous ones more.
10) one piece: the movie (aka movie 1)
this movie honestly wasn’t that bad.  the only reason it’s so low down is because it’s only an hour long and it was a tv special so it’s basically just....an extended filler episode haha.  the art and animation aren’t really any better than the anime, so you’d be better off just watching one of the good filler arcs.
