So finally they released the official ages of the characters? Where did you read them?
my source is that i made it up (sort of lying, partially used a dodgy website and partially just looking at him).
Tumblr media
it just doesn't make sense to me how THIS MAN
Tumblr media
is the same age as THIS MAN.
Tumblr media
like just looking at the two there is no way in hell they're of similar age. plus, considering mk11 is WELL into his timeline, and he has a mid-20s daughter, new era johnny just HAS to be late 20s for his appearance and the timeline of the games themselves.
i know this is deviantart, but this is a very concise study of the timeline of the games that concludes with their ages. assuming the starting point for the new era's game is the same time in their previous lives (with johnny being born ~1963 first time around, but that year is now different considering the technology present in mk1), johnny would be 29.

Mortal Kombat: The Series - a rough outline
Since recent Mortal Kombat stories (both the adaptations and the actual story modes within the games themselves) have been mixed at best, I figure why not detail how I would do a more modern adaptation of the franchise.
I practically have been adapting the franchise for my AU, but this post will be for a more faithful adaptation that adapts the original canon as best as it can.
First and foremost, I would indeed make this a series. MK can still work as a film franchise, but I do feel a series, whether animated or live-action, can explore the world-building and character development far better than a movie could.
The series would run for at least 6-7 seasons with the major games being adapted in some kind of capacity.
Without further ado, here's a rough outline of each season...
Season 1 - The tournament (Old MK1)
The series begins with five episodes detailing the origins of certain groups of characters leading up to the tournament, similar to MK Legacy.
These groups of characters are...
- Liu Kang and Kung Lao
- Johnny Cage
- Sonya Blade, Jax and Kano
- Kitana and Mileena
- Scorpion and Sub-Zero
Episode 6 is the arrival on the island, the proper introduction of Shang Tsung, hints of Goro and Reptile, a showcase of what the characters can do before the big tournament, and the seeds of certain relationships being planted, like Liu Kang x Kitana and Johnny x Sonya.
The tournament begins in episode 7 and takes up about half of the season (6 episodes). It culminates with Liu Kang killing Goro and besting Shang Tsung. The season ends on a cliffhanger with a tease of Shao Kahn.
I honestly feel that 12 episodes is the right amount to establish the main characters without things dragging on too much. With that being said, each of the following seasons are longer due to the constantly growing number of characters.
Season 2 - Into Outworld (MK2)
After Liu Kang's victory in the first tournament, the forces of Outworld, led by Baraka, massacre the Temple of Light, which motivates Liu Kang and his allies into agreeing to fight in another tournament. This time, in Outworld.
This is where we start to see the previously established relationships grow with Johnny and Sonya starting to have feelings for each other, and Liu Kang learning about why Kitana has such an interest in him.
We don't do dedicated episodes for certain characters anymore. They still get told, but in flashbacks. Why? Because much like what The4thSnake said when approaching how he would adapt MK, setting up your main cast is integral enough for the first season that it can work that way, but further characters and follow-ups can't hold the plot advancement back too much once the series has already gotten going.
Kitana ends up killing Mileena, finally allowing herself to align with the Earthrealm heroes. The climax is Liu Kang and Kung Lao vs. Shao Kahn. Why both Liu Kang and Kung Lao? As a way to show just how strong Shao is to the point where the two monks have to combine their strength to take him down.
Shao is left wounded, and the heroes return to Earthrealm with Kitana joining their side. Again, the season ends on a cliffhanger with Shang Tsung and Quan Chi healing Shao as they begin to enact their plan to resurrect Sindel on Earthrealm.
Season 3 - The invasion (MK3)
Shao Kahn resurrects Sindel on Earthrealm, which allows it to merge with Outworld. With Raiden losing his powers as a result of the merger, it's up to Liu Kang to lead the rebellion against Shao and his forces to save Earthrealm one more time.
While all of this is going on, we also have Sub-Zero rebelling against the Cyber Lin Kuei, who set out to capture him alive.
Eventually, the season culminates with Liu Kang facing Shao Kahn on his own after Kung Lao gets injured by the emperor. Liu Kang defeats Shao, who is then killed by the Elder Gods when they arrive shortly after. Sindel is restored to good, and Kitana says goodbye to Liu Kang as she wishes to get back what she lost all of those years.
The season also ends with Johnny and Sonya getting engaged.
Season 4 - Netherrealm war (MK4)
This season potentially opens with a multi-parter based on Mythologies: Sub-Zero where we see the history that Scorpion and Sub-Zero have with Quan Chi and Shinnok. In fact, this season is likely going to be mostly centered around them.
Liu Kang kinda steps down from the focus, but he still gets a huge role in the season with him trying to save Kitana and Edenia. Johnny and Sonya tie the knot sometime between seasons, and Cassie is born by then. The three main heroes lead the forces of Earthrealm against Shinnok during the Netherrealm war.
Eventually, Shinnok is defeated and Quan Chi escapes into a lost tomb where he discovers the ancient undead army of the Dragon King, which no doubt leads to the next season.
Season 5 - Next generation (MKX + Deadly Alliance)
The season takes place about 20 years after the previous one. Raiden has become an Elder God with Fujin replacing him as Earthrealm's protector. Johnny and Sonya as well as other characters like Jax, Kung Lao and Kenshi are much older. However, Liu Kang is still youthful due to his role as champion of Mortal Kombat. He still longs for the day he can get with Kitana, which no doubt will have a great payoff.
The heroes have been training the new generation of fighters like Cassie, Takeda and Kung Jin so that they can defend Earthrealm through Mortal Kombat sometime in the future. While all of this is going on, Quan Chi forms an alliance with Shang Tsung as they plan on resurrecting the Dragon King's army so that they can conquer the realms.
Throughout the season, we also follow side plots with Nitara, Kotal Kahn and his rise to power, Orderrealm vs. Chaosrealm, etc.
The season ends with the Kombat Kids losing to both Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, and being taken prisoners as Onaga makes his return to reclaim his army.
Season 6 - The Dragon King (Deception)
Liu Kang, Sonya and Johnny learn of the Kombat Kids being captured, so they decide to come out of retirement to save them. Liu Kang also reunites with Kitana, who agrees to help the Earthrealm heroes face Onaga and the Deadly Alliance, who are hellbent on reviving The One Being.
At some point, the old heroes face the Kombat Kids, who are being controlled by Onaga. Eventually, they are restored. We also wrap up the rivalry that Liu Kang has with Shang Tsung as well as the one that Scorpion and Sub-Zero have with Quan Chi, which result in the sorcerers getting killed.
The climax is Liu Kang vs. Onaga. Liu Kang finally becomes the Fire God after he and Kitana are mortally wounded, and manages to destroy The Dragon King. Kitana becomes a goddess and finally gets to be with Liu Kang as they become the protectors of the realms (not just Earthrealm, but also Outworld and Edenia).
Bonus season - Timelines kollide (MK11 + Armageddon)
The series officially wraps in Season 6, but there can indeed be a bonus season.
Instead of time travel, it's a multiverse season that brings in different versions of the characters from prior incarnations of the franchise (such as the films) and even the AU I was working on as they team up to thwart a new threat. I thought of having said threat be Titan Shang Tsung, or at least a version of Shang Tsung that is all-powerful (especially since I'm not a fan of Titans in MK).
And...that's very much it. We'd get as faithful of an adaptation as it's possible while still improving on certain shortcomings from the source material. MK gets to be told properly, for once. Plus, we'd get a genuinely good Martial Arts show that delivers on what makes MK so great and iconic.
That's all for now.

The4thSnake said it already but I greatly despise the fact that "Mortal Kombat" can refer to the game, the movie, the game, and the movie, and "Mortal Kombat 1" can refer to the game, the movie, the movie, and the game.

I've figured out what I dislike about the4thsnake's videos. He's just so negative about everything. He reminds me of the Saints Row bros who whinge about Saints Row got "woke" and I don't like it. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely understand when folks have concerns about things but if you truly hate something that much, why stay and ruin it for the rest of the fandom.

Me on my way to dedicate my time into writing my Three Princesses AU after seeing some of the leaks.
I don’t think I’m seen all of it but god damn, this sucks. If it’s real NRS has really done it this time. I’m not going to be speaking about it much more since it’s a bit stressful for me and I’m already going back to college. I’m just gonna work on making an AU that is of decent quality.
All I know is the4thsnake will have one hell of a time covering this one. Looking forward to that 5 hour video.

I'm somewhat new to the series and after watching the movie recently, I feel totally hooked and was wondering which game is a good place to start watching some of the storylines to learn more about the lore and characters (especially about liu and lao since they've been my fav characters from when I used to play when I was younger), whether to start with MKX first or shaolin monks, then MKX and MK11 afterwards. Any recs and tips are appreciated, thank you!
Uh there's no easy way to answer this, so I'm just gonna present you with as much objective information as possible, listing all mk media and categorizing it between timelines and specifying what's canon and what matters more than other stuff, then present you with some general tips on how to traverse said lore.
So heres a whole heaping pile of info for those just hopping onto the MK franchise after the release of the 2021 movie! I may update this if anyone has future questions. Welcome to MK!
For starters you need to know there are two timelines in the MK universe. The Midway timeline and the NRS timeline.
But first, little history:
Midway created the game/franchise in 1992. The company later filed for bankruptcy and sold all of it's assets to Warner Bros in 2009, disbanding/rebranding as Netherrealm Studios (NRS for short). In the process they rebooted the MK franchise, starting a new timeline.
The Midway Era:
1. Mortal Kombat
2. Mortal Kombat 2
3. Mortal Kombat 3/Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
4. Mortal Kombat 4/Mortal Kombat Gold
5. Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance
6. Mortal Kombat Deception
7. Mortal Kombat Armageddon
Other games & material that exist within this era that elaborate/retell the story/parts of the story:
Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero
Mortal Kombat Special Forces
Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks*
Mortal Kombat Comics (Midway)
Bonus material that came out around this time that add little/nothing to canon:
MK vs DC
MK: The Journey Begins
DotR
MK (1995 film)
MK Annihilation
MK Conquest
MK Comics (Malibu)
---
The NRS Era:
1. Mortal Kombat 2011 (also known as MK 9)
2. Mortal Kombat X
Other material that exists within this era that expands on parts of the story:
3. Mortal Kombat 11
4. Mortal Kombat: Onslaught
5. Mortal Kombat 1
Bonus material that came out during this era that re-imagines/retells parts of the story. These are not explicitly tied to either timeline and in turn add little/nothing to canon:
MK X Comics
MK Legacy
DLC Cameos in Injustice & Injustice 2
MK Legends: Scorpions Revenge
Mortal Kombat (2021 film)
---
MK Legends: Battle of the Realms
MK Legends: Snowblind
MK Legends: Cagematch
Some general tips when diving in:
Despite us being currently in the NRS timeline, think it's still important to look into the Midway timeline, as it is often still referenced in the NRS timeline and
(SPOILER COMING UP FOR MK 11)
in the latest installment, mk11 sort of canonized the Midway timeline by introducing time travel and having "different timelines" be an in game occurence.
(SPOILER OVER)
in terms of consuming just the story, I recommend reading the character bios and tower endings of your favorite characters.
from Mk 4 onward, the characters's tower endings exist as either entire cutscenes or images with narration over it. Most if not all can be found on youtube.
tower endings =/= story mode. Story mode is the canon events that take place, while tower endings are the "what if it was _____ who beat the bad guy?". Not every game has a story mode with full cutscenes. I think from Deception onward is when they begin implementing that, again said cutscenes can be found on youtube.
When in doubt, read the Wiki! I've linked every game's wiki here which include plot summaries.
There are also a some MK YouTubers that specialize in lore based content that can also steer you in the right direction:
History Behind the Warrior
Tabmok99
The4thSnake
Not an mk ytber but this timeline video is also pretty decent for condensing most of the important info
Just how much of what is canon is sometimes debatable due to some, uh, questionable writing decisions being made by NRS at the moment. I wish I could help there but it's honestly just a little messy to traverse.
---
*While just a spin/off game, I definitely recommend Shaolin Monks to you as someone who is a fan of Liu and Lao especially, since the game focuses entirely on them. It's my personal favorite MK game.

MisPokonceptions: Goh and Grookey
No this this is not a rip off of The4thSnake’s series shut up
Surprise, everyone! Instead of waiting tomorrow to do this blog, I’ve decided to do it now because I’m bored. Simple as that.
Anywayz, even before the episode came out, many fans have been clamoring that Goh doesn’t deserve Grookey and that either Ash or Chloe should have it. I, personally, disagree with this notion and feel Grookey very well fits fine in Goh’s team and here’s why:
1. Starting with Ash, assuming he’s gonna start to use Dracovish sometime soon, Ash already has 6 Pokemon on his team. (no, Mimey does NOT count since he was only used for one battle for conventional reasons and has not been used again since!) The thing is, Ash only having 6 mons seems to be the main status quo the anime has been going for him recently, as shown in XYZ and Sun and Moon.
2. Goh, on the other hand, while having a huge abundance of Pokemon that grows every episode or two, still seems to be sorting out his own main team. While Cinderace and Sobble are duhs and Scizor and Flygon are high possibilities, there really isn’t a clear answer at the moment. While the past opening did indicate that Heracross and Aerodactyl would also be big factors for a main team of his, it’s really not best to take that seriously considering how minimal of appearances (if any) those two made after they debuted. Grookey, being the grass Starter of Galar, kinda fills up a good space, which brings me to my next point.
3. Remember in the Original Series when Ash was an actual beginner and he had all three Kanto Starters on his team? Well, it’s kind of a parallel here with Goh, the new beginner (next to Chloe), having all three Galar Starters. Adding on to that, like with Ash back then, Goh’s Fire Starter is fully evolved while the other two are currently in their first stages. While I have no clue whether this is intentional or not, it is a nice callback to the OG series and I like that.
4. Going back to Ash, it’s kinda symbolic that he won’t have a starter on his team this time. Think about it, he’s now an official regional Champion, so it’s probably about time his team progression got a little more serious. I mean, the first mon he caught in Journeys was a freakin’ Dragonite, and then he caught a freakin’ Gengar. He then got a Riolu which evolved to the highly regarded mon: Lucario. While some say Farfetch’d is a contraster to all of this, do remember that this Farfetch’d is very battle-born and actually won a few rounds before joining Ash’s team, so in a when, it’s like a slightly more hardened version of past top-tiers like Hawlucha or Incineroar. And lastly, Ash got a Dracovish, a popular Gen. 8 mon highly regarded for its powerful stats. So yeah, bascially speaking, the bar for Ash’s team this time around is kinda too high for starters.
5. One common complaint to this whole fiasco is that Ash should get Grookey because him having a grass-type is always a common trends in his regional teams. In actuality, the anime already has been breaking basic trends for Ash’s teams way before Journeys. Examples being include in Best Wishes where he had Juniper look after his non-battling Pokemon instead of Oak, XYZ where he didn’t even have a grass-type on his team (y’know, just like now), and in Sun and Moon where he didn’t catch a water-type or even the regional bird. So yeah, breaking common trends in Ash’s team is nothing new, people.
6. With what we’ve seen of Grookey’s personality so far, it can draw some great dynamics between it, Cinderace, and Sobble due to all of their contrasting personalities (Cinderace’s leadership and friendliness, Sobble’s shyness, and Grookey’s mischievous streak. Use your imagination.)
7. And now going into Chloe, she’s only now starting to become a trainer and she needs to development more with Eevee and maybe Yamper first before adding in other mons.

Mortal Kombat Rant
Personally, I think the Aftermath was good until we got to the Sindel/Shao Kahn chapter, my opinion about the Aftermath soured.
The few things I loved about the Aftermath was the fact that the villains were not treated like jobbers and I think that is a good thing. However, I have a bone to pick with the writers at NRS for the entire MK11 about some issues
1. Can someone explain to me how Jade got promoted from Kitana’s bodyguard and friend to Kotal’s woman? Most of the time, I don’t have problems with characters having a love interest or anything but my main issue with the Jade/Kotal pairing is the fact that this ship seems forced.
Throughout the Mortal Kombat lore, Jade doesn’t mention having a love interest neither is it implied that she had one. I can buy the story of Kotal being trapped in Shang Tsung’s flesh pits but even then, Jade ought to make mention about a lover she had or at least carried an object to remember him by, right? I mean, in MK X, Kitana had a variation in which she utilized Jade’s glaive as a way to remember her.
In addition to this (and the fact that I absolutely despise Kotal as a character), as The4thSnake mentioned in his videos on Kanonical Kouples in Mortal Kombat, why was Kotal reluctant to ally with Earthrealm in MK X most especially when his supposed lover might need to be rescued?! Why was Kotal so quick to give up on Earthrealm rather than band up with them during Shinnok’s invasion?!
2. Kung Lao: To be honest, I never really considered this until an anonymous ask brought this up. I did remember asking myself at one point while watching some of the intro dialogues on YouTube, “when did Kung Lao get so arrogant?” I mean, Kung Lao did have his issues with arrogance in MK 9 but I don’t remember him being so whiny (Revenant!Kung Lao) or being a pompous jerkass (Past!Kung Lao). Or was it something I missed along the way?
In MK 9, I understood that Kung Lao had the burden of fulfilling his legacy as the descendant of the Great Kung Lao. However, he still acted mature in some incidents like when Kitana got captured and was about to be executed. But the Kung Lao I am seeing in MK 11 acts like a toddler who doesn’t have his favourite candy with him. Even in MK X, Kung Lao doesn’t act in this manner!
3. Past!Johnny Cage: Sure, Johnny Cage was an arrogant jerk in MK 9 but he wasn’t the one-dimensional Casanova MK 11 portrayed. He still respected Sonya for who she is and never tried to objectify her (even with that impractical costume in MK 9).
4. Jax Briggs: In MK X, he retired from his military duties but in MK 11, he was honourably discharged? How?
5. Sareena, a demon who wants to escape the Netherrealm and refute the stereotypes of demons always being chaotic evil, now Kabal’s housewife despite never interacting with him. If anything, Sareena would have been better making a cameo in Noob Saibot or Sub Zero’s arcade ending but someone thought she’d make a perfect housewife for Kabal 🤦🏾‍♀️
6. Kotal’s self-serving memory: Y’all remember the time Outworld allied with Earthrealm but Raiden lashed out at them for no reason? Yeah, me neither. Did Kotal seem to forget how he used the Kombat Kids to do his dirty job of getting rid of Mileena for him? Or how he claimed that Earthrealm cannot be trusted with protecting Shinnok’s amulet while conveniently leaving out the fact that he had declined the offer to do so? Or how he imprisoned them despite the fact that they had held on to their part of the bargain while purposefully breaching the Reiko Accords? Let’s not leave out the part where he went after them to kill them foolishly believing that he could buy time for Outworld when Shinnok had invaded Earthrealm.
With all the points I raised, did Kotal really aid Earthrealm? I’m surprised Dark!Raiden didn’t shock the shit out of Kotal for his betrayal.
7. What’s with the damn retcons?! I really didn’t mind Kabal’s initial retcon in MK 9 where he is a reformed criminal trying to atone for his past misdeeds until someone (ahem, Dom What’s-his-face) thought it was a good idea to retcon his origin again.
And there’s the biggest offence of all retcons NRS could have ever done which is Sindel’s retcon and honest to God, I’ve never felt sicker to my gut when I saw Sindel hugging Shao Kahn. The OG Sindel will not be caught dead even standing close to the man who destroyed her realm! Who thought this was empowering? If anything, this is a sign of pure laziness on the part of Dom Whatever-the-eff-his-name-is.
Who else are we gonna retcon too? Oh yes, Shinnok wasn’t really that evil, he only wanted to live peacefully on Earthrealm but damn Raiden and those elder gods for not granting him his wish. Or Raiden was evil all along too? How many characters is NRS gonna ruin for us?
And to think they would fix Sindel’s retcon. Shows how much NRS loves to screws the fans over.

As much as I love Kung Jin as a character, I really wish it were Kai instead. They never did anything with him as a character after MK4(Armageddon does not count) and I think the perfect way to introduce him would be in MKX. The4thSnake did a great video on how to utilize Kai in the new timeline
