The Color Purple being the one musical movie within the past few years to actually be successful at the box office is SO well deserved. It’s such an incredible movie that I really really really want to watch again!
#hoping that this means that hollywood will start marketing musicals as musicals now#since the color purple is doing incredible numbers at the box office right now#can’t stop thinking about this movie#like despite telling a story that’s been told three times before#it still manages to make the story feel new and refreshing#and i love that this movie focuses more on celie healing and finding community with all the women that are in her life#like the other adaptations do also have that#but i feel like this movie really focused more on that aspect#the color purple#the color purple musical#the color purple 2023#theatre

Fun Home is credited with being the first Broadway musical to have a lesbian protagonist. I’m genuinely confused because I thought Celie from the Color Purple was a lesbian. Does Joanne from Rent not count because she is seen more as a featured character in an ensemble cast instead of the main role? I’m being legit about this.

Thinking about how in the new Color Purple movie, in the scene towards the beginning of the movie where Celie asks Mister about Shug and Shug singing “Too Beautiful for Words”, one of the first songs that Shug sings to Celie in the Broadway musical, is playing in the background just aaHHHHH
#the foreshadowing!!!#i nearly lost my mind when i recognized what that song was ajsjsjsk#the soundtrack tricked me into thinking they cut it from the movie but they didn’t!!!#they just changed the context of how that song happens#the movie uses that song to start forming the romantic connection between celie and shug even before they’ve met#the color purple#the color purple 2023#the color purple musical#celie x shug#broadway#theatre
