A stroll through the iconic Pallavaram Friday flea market. Friday Sandhai at Pallavaram has a 100-year-old history. Antiques, bicycles, vegetables, auto-parts, pots, quail eggs, and plant seeds. The Pallavaram Friday Market is like a hamlet with non-resident inhabitants. They pack their bags and arrive at dawn, make the two-kilometre-long stretch their home for a day, and leave at night, only to repeat the pattern every week. Some have been doing this for years. The market’s entrance is lined with gardening-related products such as saplings, flowerpots, and compost. 1st photo: Dried fish for sale 2-5th photos: Market 6th photo: Quail eggs It is a 15 minute walk from the train station to the market. The market usually begins by 7:00am. One is not allowed to take photos of pets. Carry some water to drink. The Chennai Photowalk is undertaken by photo enthusiasts, to start with people who have enrolled in flickr which . Now the Chennai Photowalk has an FB page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/chennaiphotowalk/ with about 6300 members from all over the world. Photowalks are undertaken twice in a month on the second and fourth Sundays  normally. First walk will be in a new place. The second walk called Retrowalk is undertaken to a place where the group has already visited. The first Chennai Photowalk was conducted in November 2007. On 28th November 2014, there was a Retrowalk at Sowcarpet, which is having population of people from the Northern part of India, who have settled several decades back. In the fringe of Sowcarpet is located the Kothwal Chavadi, which used to be a big market for vegetables prior to the market getting shifted to Koyambedu. A group of about 25 joined the Photowalk and here I present some of the portraits of the people whom I met during the Photowalk. All of them complied with our request to pose with a smile. 

The people in the second and third photo were so welcoming and eager to pose. Conversation with the people in the second photo: 1. Ena pa, ethaka photo edukirenga? (Hello, why are you taking pictures? Ans. Taking photos of the neighbourhood including those of people and buildings. 2. Engalam photo edaka matengala? (Won’t you take photos of us?) Ans. I’d be happy to take it with your permission. Please pose however you want and I’ll click some. 3. Romba thanks pa. Neenga Nalla irukunum. (Many thanks, bless you). I smiled. They smiled. We parted ways. . 3rd photo: A photographer went up to these two people and politely asked if he could take a photo. They asked: 1. Ethaka engala poi photo edukirenge? Enna panna porenge enge photo vecha (Why do you want take a photo of us? What are you going to do with it? ) Ans. Chumma than photo edukiren photo. Aproma pezhita intha photo eppadi eduthikruken na pappen, eppadi vantharika na pappen. (No particular reason but I will go and check how I have taken the photo and how the output has come) Seri evalo vena edathiko (Ok, take as many photos as you want) The photographer then says, if you want, I’ll take a print and then come and give it to you. The man says “ella atha lam vendam” (don’t want all that). . It’s so much fun interacting with old people. Many of them are on their own either because they have lost their family, or their loved ones have disown them. The will power of these people are so high that they’re able to live on their own come what may.
