STORIES TELLING: NED LOWE AND THE DEATH OF POOR REPRESENTATION IN OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH
In history, Ned Lowe was one of the most sadistic and violent pirates in the early 18th century, so he’s an obvious choice for a villain for season 2, episode 6 – Calypso’s Birthday.  What is interesting is what the OFMD writers chose to do with him.
Lowe announces himself to the crew of the Revenge with great fanfare (cannon ball attack) and gets right to the point.
Tumblr media
Ed is thoroughly unimpressed.
Tumblr media
Cut to Ed and Stede tied up while Ned attempts to set the mood so he can monologue about why he wants to kill Ed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ed knows what’s coming. He is going to suffer but he still can’t be arsed to meet Ned with anything but vaguely bored dismissiveness (and Stede is happy to play along).
Tumblr media
Up on the deck, Ned prepares the crew for his big, dramatic moment of symphonic torture.
Note that the Revenge crew is tied down, braced by vices and generally unable to protect themselves from imminent torture and possible death, but their spirits are up. They don’t seem terribly fussed.
Then Stede uses his people positive management style to happily orchestrate a worker uprising in Ned’s crew.
Ned’s crew responds instantly; severing their allegiance to Lowe and telling him off.
Tumblr media
The crew sails away and talks profit sharing while Ned dully threatens to hunt them down.
Ned is now a prisoner of the Revenge crew and seems entirely disinterested in his own survival.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Ned sinks to the depths, without struggling at all.
Tumblr media
There is a lot going on in this episode: pay and labor equity direct action, gay love engagement bliss, kink humor, Stede being a hero and saving his crew by playing to his strengths, then having to decide whether to kill in cold blood and feel the consequences of that choice. Ed having one more reason to be done with piracy (while being so impressed with and fond of Stede), and then watching his man make a fraught choice and having to deal with the fallout from that. (And, damn, I haven’t even mentioned the passionate sex bit.) Anyway, back to the point.
Now for the the meta part
The Ned Lowe sequences are perfectly in keeping with OFMD’s signature blend of madcap violence, humor, and big emotional gut punches. But something about Ned Lowe just strikes me as off for this show.
Ned is seriously threatening the crews’ lives, so why don’t they take him seriously?
Why does Ned have such a boring, throwaway backstory?
Why is Ned so nonchalant about his own death; like it’s a foregone conclusion?
Why does Ned have a silver violin and silver spurs on his slip-on dress shoes?
Why is Ned sartorially monochromatic?
And then I realized who Ned reminds me of.
This guy,
Tumblr media
Earnst Stavro Blofeld in the James Bond film Diamonds are Forever (1971)
And this guy,
Tumblr media
Scar in Disney's The Lion King (1994).
And this guy,
Tumblr media
Xerxes, 300 (2006).
And it sure seems like Ned Lowe isn’t just an episodic villain. He is an archetype of the one-dimensional, stereotypical queer-coded villain that has been endemic in film and television throughout history. The OFMD writers have a lot to say about what to do with this kind of character:
Don’t respect him.
Feel free to openly mock him.
Don’t let him take your joy, even though he will hurt you.
He won’t disappear on his own. You have to throw something at him (take action) to make him go away.
Once he’s in the water, he’s content to drown. He’s not into what he’s doing any more than you are.
Oh and, just to be clear,
Tumblr media
The LGBTQIA+ community has a very long history of turning shit media into better stories. So, hey, big media, prepare to have your crap characters wrecked (improved).
Now, back to our transformative pirate show with rich, complex queer characters and a multi-layered plot that surprises me every week and makes me feel big feelings - most of all, joy.
Final thought: I do wonder if Ned Lowe is monochromatically silver as a tribute to/poke at, Hollywood and the silver screen.
This meta was written before OFMD season 2 has fully aired. No idea what’s going to happen in the finale (and I’ve generally fled social media to avoid spoilers). I’ll be back, looking at everyone’s fascinating posts after episode 8 airs.

INDY Daily: Five Bills That Should Pass in the N.C. Senate Before the Crossover Deadline
It’s Friday, May 7
Thank  you to this week's sponsor, UNC Summer School, offering over 700 affordable online courses.  Summer term begins on May 19th; registration opens now.  Explore a new interest, move toward your goals, earn college credit.
Good morning, readers.
The crossover deadline—the date by which all bills must have passed either the House or the Senate chamber in order to be eligible for consideration throughout the remainder of the legislative session—is next Thursday, May 13. (Bills with provisions related to finance or appropriations, constitutional amendments, appointments, or elections laws are exempt.)
Here are five bills we think should pass in the Senate before the crossover deadline.
Senate Bill 393 + Senate Bill 634
Part of the suite of Sen. Natalie Murdock's Momnibus package, these bills seek to improve health outcomes for Black pregnant mothers by supporting doula services through grants and asking DHHS to consider funding doulas under Medicaid. Read more here and here.
Senate Bill 439: Hate Crimes Prevention Act
Filed on March 31, two weeks following the shootings of six Asian American spa workers in Atlanta, the bill would create a hate crimes database, expand protections against hate crimes and increase punishments for hate crimes, and require training for law enforcement officers and prosecutors. Read more here.
Senate Bill 544: 2021 Water Safety Act
A bipartisan bill that would provide funding of $10 million or more to North Carolina universities to study ways to address PFAS ("forever chemicals"), including GenX, in the state's waterways.
Senate Bill 710: A Tax Plan for a Just Recovery
This bill would increase state funding by close to $2 billion dollars per year by rolling back Republican tax cuts on corporations and families making over $500,000 per year. The money would go into the general fund to support education and other goals set forth in the state constitution.
Senate Bill 669 + 711: N.C. Compassionate Care Act + Senate Bill 646: Marijuana Justice and Reinvestment Act
The bipartisan Senate Bill 711 would legalize medical marijuana for patients suffering from debilitating illnesses, as would Senate Bill 669. Senate Bill 646 would legalize marijuana for recreational use.
Honorable mentions:
Senate Bill 459: Improve Pipeline Safety
Read more here.
Senate Bill 510: Release Body-Worn/Dashboard Camera Video
Read more here.
Feel free to forward this email to your Republican lawmakers. Have a great weekend!

Orange County
UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz and other university leaders shared plans for transitioning to full, in-person operations this fall at an employee forum this week.
Derek Torres and his wife, Julianna Villarosa, a UNC-Chapel Hill alumna, are working on a documentary that explores the racial impacts of the very problematic South of the Border tourist attraction located off of I-95 just south of the North Carolina boarder with South Carolina.
Durham County
The City of Durham is considering naming a poet laureate after three local poets brought the idea before the City Council. The city's cultural advisory board will begin to flesh out plans. Chapel Hill and Carrboro already have poet laureates.
Singer and musician John Legend gave Duke University's commencement speech this year and warned graduates of the dangers of zero-sum thinking. Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett will speak to UNC's graduates this weekend.
State officials are urging Durham residents to be on the lookout for a gauge that measures potentially hazardous, radioactive material stolen from a Durham construction site on Thursday.

Wake County
The City of Raleigh presented plans for the 14-acre Deveraux Meadows Park, located along the Peace Street corridor between Glenwood Avenue and Person Street and once home to a professional baseball team and stadium, the Minor League Raleigh Capitals, from the 1930s until 1979.
The area has been revitalized in recent years with the Smoky Hollow Development that includes a Publix grocery store. This stretch of land will be reimagined as a sculpted green space with a waterfront into downtown following restoration of the Pigeon House Branch of Crabtree Creek.
Wendy Wishart, the Brier Creek woman charged with shooting and killing her husband, Sean Michael Wishart, this week, is a well-known local anti-abortion harasser, according to the Triangle Abortion Access Coalition, a group of clinic escorts.
Elsewhere
At a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting this week on the controversial farm bill, committee leaders shut down public discussion of contentious portion of the Farm Act. The bill itself limits public input on swine farms that install biogas systems and anaerobic digesters.
House Speaker Tim Moore, who doesn't usually file bills, is a co-sponsor of legislation that would make rioting a felony if it leads to significant property damage or if someone is injured or dies. Citing the protests and the aftermath of the George Floyd killing last summer, Republican lawmakers want vandals to be held for 48 hours in jail, charged with felonies, and imprisoned for two years. The ACLU of North Carolina calls the bill unreasonably harsh.
A bill that removes language from state laws listing violations as not serious enough for long-term school suspension (including using inappropriate language, noncompliance, dress code violations and minor physical alterations) passed in the N.C. House yesterday. Democratic lawmakers say the bill could unfairly target Black students.
Will lawmakers do anything to address the harmful "forever chemicals" in the state's waterways this legislative session? Ten bills have been introduced for them to consider.
Pasquotank County Commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to ask lawmakers in the General Assembly to change the state's body camera law following the shooting death of Andrew Brown Jr. by sheriff's deputies and a Superior Court judge's ruling not to release the body camera footage right away.
Statewide COVID-19 by the numbers: Wednesday, May 5
1,798 New lab-confirmed cases (978,566 total; seven-day average leveling)
1,031 Current hospitalizations reported (seven-day average trending down; 12,738 total deaths, +17 over Thursday)
34,310 Completed tests (12.59 million total; most recent positive rate was 4.4 percent)
7,456,842 Total vaccinations administered (State data not updated daily)
Today's weather
Cloudy with showers and potential thunderstorms. Cooler with highs in the mid 60s.

the case of us (chapter six)
Jack Sloane x Reader
Word Count: 3432
A/N: Unsure on this chapter, probably not the best but it’s features a fuck ton of progress for Jack x Reader! Feedback is always welcome :)
Read on AO3
Chapter Five  Chapter Seven
Tumblr media
The team had caught the case in the early hours of Monday morning. Lieutenant Natalie Simmons and her wife Paige had both been found dead in an alleyway, miles away from their home. It was plain to see they’d both been tortured; cuts and burns littered their half-naked bodies but there was no blood at the crime scene.
The Metropolitan PD had 2 cases open that matched what had happened to your victims, both in the last 5 weeks. It was always 2 women and the women were in some form of a romantic relationship. They all had substantial trauma to their bodies and cause of death had been a gunshot wound to the back of the head, but with little to no forensic evidence, the PD had been stumped and didn't resist when NCIS took the case.
Due to the healing time of some of the wounds on the woman’s bodies Jimmy confirms that they were held for multiple days. Kasie had the bullets but with no gun to match them too, they weren’t much use.
It doesn’t take long to discover all the victims had been to a nightclub a couple of nights before their deaths called ‘Honeydrop’. Ellie and Tim go to speak to the owner and any staff/regulars that were around. A member of staff confirms that all 6 victims had been to the club and she only remembers because they were all ridiculously drunk. The cameras don’t work so you have to rely on witness accounts. Customers confirm the bartender’s story though, saying they remember seeing Natalie and Paige stumbling out of the club on Friday night.
There are no disturbance calls or fight reports with the police and even the customers confirm that that sort of stuff never really happens around here. “Do you remember anyone creepy watching the girls the night of their disappearance?” Ellie asks.
“I mean creepy J was watching them, but he has a tendency to ogle the woman, he’s harmless though, just kind of a creep.”
“Creepy J?” The woman explains that he’s one of the bartenders, real name Jasper Yapp. Worked here the last couple of months and his wife Rachel had begun to start coming to the club every so often as well, usually Friday’s but recently Wednesday’s (Ladies night) as well. She doesn’t speak to anyone apart from Jasper though, usually just sits in a corner drinking.
As you look into Jasper the possibility of him being your perp heightens. He has a record for aggravated assault and was in prison for 6 months. He’d also been fired from his 2 previous jobs both due to anger problems. However, there was nothing connecting them to the case. They didn’t own a gun, owned no properties that could be used to hold victims, the only thing that even connected them to the victims at all was that Jasper and his wife had been at the bar all 3 nights but so had half the other staff.
With such little evidence, a search warrant was off the table and there was no point in bringing them into interrogation as you’d just tip your hand and spook them. An undercover operation seemed like your best option.
It was going to be you and Ellie but considering she’d been to the bar a couple of days beforehand her cover could easily be blown. Jasper wasn’t there when she went to the club, but it was possible another member of staff would recognise and expose her. So, the next option was Jack who jumped at the chance to go back into the field.
----
“Hey, girlfriend.”  The teasing lilt in Jack’s voice makes you roll your eyes playfully, as you turn around to face her. You’re about to throw back your own witty comment but stop when you notice her outfit. You swallow roughly as your eyes trail up her body taking in every aspect of the look. She’s wearing black skinny jeans, with a white satin shirt that’s unbuttoned a tad deeper than usual, giving you a peek of cleavage. She’s got braces on, sitting across her chest and she’s currently fiddling with one of the straps absentmindedly. A gold necklace hangs around her neck and she has paired the whole outfit with a pair of black heeled boots. When your eyes finally reach her face, her makeup and hair in their usual style, you find a devilish smirk on her face. You realise your jaw is hanging open and quickly snap it shut.
You clear your throat and try to fight the blush that’s forming. “You look good Jack.”
Jack's eyebrows raise, smirk still present as she lightly bites her bottom lip. “Thanks. So do you.” You were wearing a black playsuit, pared with a chunky belt and your doc martens.
“Thanks.” You clear your throat again. Why was it so hard to breathe in here? “Uh, I’ve just got to finish fixing my makeup and then I’ll be out.”
“Ok. I’ll be in my office, come find me after?” You nod but don’t say anything else and Jack makes her exit, shutting the bathroom door behind her. You look back in the mirror and breathe a sigh of relief before going back to fix your makeup. Deliberately not thinking about the feeling currently shooting through your body.
—-
Once you’ve finished, you head down the corridor to Jack’s office. “Ready to go?” Jack nods, locking up her office and falling in step with you as you head down to the bullpen.
Torres whistles loudly when he sees you both. “Hot damn, you ladies dress up good!” You can’t help the proud smirk that comes to your face even as you roll your eyes at him.
Tim hands you each an earpiece so you can keep in contact with the team. Your wires have already been fitted. Ellie and Gibbs will be sitting in a surveillance van outside, listening to what was happening and ready to intervene if anything started to go south. Tim and Nick, staying behind at NCIS just in case. Normally you’d have someone else on the inside posing as a staff member to watch but as your suspect was a bartender, Gibbs had decided to play it safe not wanting to spook him.
“Alright babe, let’s do this.” You grin at the blonde.
“Yes baby,” Jack smirks back. You gulp at the words, ignoring the flutter in your stomach.
----
The club is starting to fill up when you arrive. Jack squeezes your hand. “I’m going to get us drinks.” You nod, allowing her hand to slip from yours and begin to walk around the room taking in the space. It’s not too big. A bar sits to the left, filling the whole wall. Seating is dotted around the space with a dance floor in the back corner. You notice Rachel sitting at a table in the corner of the room.
“Yapp’s at the bar,” Jack whispers into your ear as she comes up beside you and passes you your drink.
You hum. “His wife’s sitting at a table. 4 o’clock.” You both move to a high table a bit further down from Rachel, giving you both the ability to watch both her and Jasper. You sit there for a while, observing them. Taking it in turns to go up and collect drinks to give the illusion of drinking alcohol even if you didn’t take much more than a couple of sips.
“She’s been watching that couple on the dance floor on and off for the last 5 minutes.” Jack suddenly speaks up.
“Draw her attention to you.” Gibbs voice speaks through your earpiece.
“May I have this dance, Jack.” You stand from your chair, doing a dramatic bow and extending your hand. Jack laughs.
“It would be an honour” She accepts your hand and allows you to pull her from the chair. You lead her to the dance floor, making sure you were in direct eye-line of Rachel and blocking her view of the other couple.
You dance closely moving to the beat of the music. Jack’s hands move to the air as she dances, before running down and through her hair. Your eyes find Rachel, who has moved slightly her eyes back on the couple from before. The women are basically wrapped around each other and look like they are seconds away from fucking on the dance floor. You barely withhold your groan as you realize what’s going to have to happen to gain the woman’s full attention.
You link your hand with one of Jack’s, leading her slightly backwards to block the view of the other couple again. You move your hands to Jack’s waist pulling her into you, your bodies now flushed together. Jack’s let outs a small gasp in surprise, a smirk tugging at her lips. “Ready to put on a show?” You tease and Jack smirk just widens, her hands snaking up to wrap around your neck.
Your bodies move in sync as you dance. Jack’s eyes hold yours, sweat glistens on her forehead as she takes heavy breaths. Her hips keep pushing into yours as you dance and your hands are gripped around the bottom of her braces as you hold her against you. You watch fascinated as Jack’s eyes darken, she’s smirking and her head moves even closer to your, her hands leaving where they’d been loosely resting around your neck and finding their way into your hair. You can’t breathe, can’t do anything but watch the blonde. Her eyes finally leave yours as she quickly looks over your shoulder before focusing back on you.
“We’ve got her attention. Big finale?” You nod, unable to say anything else as Jack’s eyes fall to your lips and pull your head in closer to hers. It’s like time slows down as Jack’s lips brush yours and you instantly feel alive. Jack gasps and you kiss her harder. You stop dancing as you spend time exploring each other’s mouths with hot kisses. Your leg juts forward, sliding into the space between her legs, the denim of her jeans scratches across your bare leg and you feel her hands lighten in your hair. The rest of the world disappears as a moan rips from Jack’s throat and you feel a sudden heat shoot straight down between your legs.
It’s not until Gibbs’ voice rings through your ear with a grumbled “Y/N. Sloane. Sitrep.” You come back to reality. You jump in Jack’s arms barely refraining from yanking yourself away, at the same time, someone stumbles into you, spilling their drink down your side.
“Shit!”
“Oh, I’m so sorry.” Your eyes snap up to find Rachel and you let the kiss drift to the back of your mind as you fall back into work mode. She looks apologetic but you can see the ways her eyes light up in excitement. “I’m really sorry. Let me buy you and your” She looks at Jack, her lips slightly pursed “friend a drink to apologise.”
“It’s fine, you don’t have-”
“I insist really.”
“Sure, okay.” You follow Rachel to the bar, interlocking your fingers with Jack’s. A determination is in Jack’s eyes that makes you smirk. You watch as Rachel orders the drinks from Jasper and barely contain from rolling your eyes as you notice his eyes trailing over you and Jack. They speak in hushed voices so you can’t hear them but you do notice when Jasper subtly drops something into both of your drinks.
“They’re trying to drug us.” You whisper it into Jack’s ear aware that the team will be able to hear you too.
”Be careful guys.” Ellie’s voice rings through. It was probably GHB or Rohypnol and why it was unlikely a sip would have any effect on your body it would be safest if you didn’t both drink it.
“One of us needs to take a sip to satisfy her. You go to the toilet. I’ll take a sip and then come and find you.” You can see the hesitation in Jack’s eyes but Rachel’s about to turn around and she needs to move quickly. At the steel in your expression, Jack sighs, squeezing your hand and giving you a look that says be careful before quickly turning around and heading to the toilets.
Rachel turns around then, she’s about to give you the drinks when she notices Jack’s absence. “Where’s your friend?”
“Oh, she just went to the toilet. She’ll be back.” You ensure, and there’s hesitation in Rachel’s eyes but she hands you the drinks anyway and just like you suspected she’s patiently waiting for you to take a sip. The cup is too full to do anything but take one.
A satisfied smirk crosses Rachel’s face. “Again, I’m so sorry!”
“It’s really no problem, thank you for the drinks. Now I’ve got to go find my girlfriend, check if she’s okay.” You wave goodbye to the woman and make your way to the toilets across the club. You can feel Rachel’s and Jasper’s eyes watching you the whole time.
“How do you feel?” Jack asks the second the toilet door closes behind you. You roll your eyes at her.
“I’m fine, I literally took the tiniest sip.” You move to the sink tipping the majority of the liquid down the sink before handing one of the cups to Jack. She’s about to say something else but then Gibbs’ voice is cutting in.
”10 minutes. Then lead them out the back. We’ll have to wait until they try something and then we’ll step in.”
“Got it, boss.” As you say it your eyes finally meet the mirror and you notice a couple of lipstick stains around your mouth from Jack’s kisses. You clear your throat, careful to avoid Jack’s eyes as you wipe at your mouth. You didn’t have time to focus on that now either. Later. Once the case was over.
After you’ve finished cleaning your mouth you turn to look back at Jack offering a small smile. “Let’s get this done.”
----
You exit the club stumbling around, Jack’s arm is wrapped around your waist and your head leaning on her as you walk. Rachel and Jasper follow closely behind you both. You exit right out onto the dark alleyway and slowly begin to walk down the road. You barely get a couple of steps before you notice the car sitting in the middle of the path. You signal to Jack and she nods letting you know she’s noticed as well.
Jasper moves quickly, moving to stand in front of you both, blocking your route. “Can I help you?” You make sure your words sound slurred and Jasper just smirks.
“Did you two want a lift home? It’s not safe to be out here.” Jasper’s voice is soothing and full of confidence and you could understand how people could have fallen for the trick. You can feel the presence of Rachel behind you.
“We’re alright thank you,” Jack speaks up, trying to manoeuvre you both around the man. Jasper just takes a step to the right, blocking her.
“Really, we insist.”
“No. I insist we’re fine.” Your response is curt and rude and you watch as Jasper’s lip curls into a sneer. You go to push past him and he grabs your wrist in a tight grip. Jack’s arms fall away from you as you try to pull your arm from Jasper's grip. He just tightens his grip. “Let me go!”
It happens before Jack can move. You try to pull away again, kicking him in the leg in protest. He grunts in pain, snarling and before you can duck out the way, his fist flies out connecting with your jaw. You fall to the floor, gasping in pain as your head hits the road beneath you. Your head is already throbbing as you try to sit up. You can distantly hear the team descending on the scene as you spit out some blood. Your hand comes up to touch your lip and you gasp when you feel the cut.
“Y/N? Are you ok?” Jack’s over in a matter of seconds, trying to stop you from getting up.
“I’m fine, just let me get up.” You whine, trying to push the blonde away so you can get off the floor as your head spins.
“Will you just hold still a minute!” Jack snaps and you still. Despite your fat lip and headache you can’t help but smirk at the woman who holds your head in her hands, thumb brushing your cheek as she examines the cut.
She’s so pretty. Her hair’s a little frizzy from the evening but it makes her look cute. Your eyes find her shirt, you can see right down it and it gives you a perfect view of her cleavage. You quickly look away, swallowing roughly, and to Jack whose eyebrows are furrowed in concern. She always cares, it’s nice. You like when she cares about you, makes you feel warm inside. Everything about her makes you feel warm. When she held your hand, or smiled at you or got all excited, or when she was concentrating on something really hard and her eyebrows would furrow and she’d click her pen absentmindedly. Or how she was basically incapable of sitting on any surface properly, always without shoes and crossed legs. It was cute. She was cute.
And hot actually. The way her body had moved against yours tonight. That kiss you could have gotten lost in that kiss. You could do it again. You want to do it again.
No.
No.
Oh no.
Oh shit.
“Y/N?” Jack’s beginning to get really concerned now. “Let’s get someone to check you out. Just hold onto me.” You allow her to guide you up and out of the alleyway as your mind screamed.
You had feelings for Jack.
It made so much sense. Oh god. This was so bad. You couldn’t- nope! You worked with her! She was your best friend! This was so so bad.
You allowed the EMT to do his examination as you sat in the back of the ambulance. You waved Jack off to go wrap everything up, unable to talk to her when your mind was swarming so much.
Turns out you had a mild concussion. Not surprising due to your roaring head and the daze you’d fallen into that allowed your thoughts to spiral. The EMT gives you a couple of tablets to dull the pain and an ice pack to hold to your head.
“Can I go now?” You beg, finally getting impatient and just wanting to go home and sleep this off.
“You’ll need someone to check on you overnight, make sure your symptoms don’t get any worse.”
You roll your eyes. “I’ll be fine-”
“I’ll stay with her.” Your eyes swing round to Jack, who’s back with a steel in her eyes that you know there’s no use fighting with. You try to anyway.
“Jack, seriously-”
“I drove here anyway, so you can’t get home without a lift and Gibbs and Ellie will be heading back to NCIS.” Jack’s eyebrow raises, her eyes daring you to challenge her. Gibbs walks over then, coming to stand beside Jack.
“Let Jack stay, Y/N. That’s an order.”
You sigh, deflating as you give in. “Fine.” Jack grins brightly and Gibbs just smirks at you. His arm reaches out and you use it for balance as you get up from the ambulance. He surprises you then by pulling you into a hug that causes you to smile. He pulls away, making sure Jack’s got hold of you as he steps back completely.
“You’re not to come in tomorrow.”
“Sure, ok.” You laugh, very much not going to follow that rule, as you begin to walk away. Jack’s arm is wrapped around your waist to support you and it’s sending butterflies through your stomach.
“I’m serious Y/N!” Gibbs calls after you.
“I can’t hear you!” You shout back and you can hear Jack giggling from next to you. You turn to look at her, a smile coming to your face when you see the amused smirk on Jack’s face.
“You are so not going into work tomorrow.” She whispers it into your ear, her hot breath tickling your face and you swallow roughly as the heat you’d felt earlier comes right back. You’re too consumed trying to calm the blush on your face to even come up with a response and Jack laughs.
You were in so much trouble.

BDRPWriMo Task #21: 10+ Characters I’d Like To See
For task #21,  I always do a list of 10+ characters I have in my head that I’m considering playing, and then a second list of 10+ I want to see but don’t have muse for myself. But! This year I actually don’t have 10 of each, I only have like 3 characters in mind to eventually pickup so I’m gonna mention those and then my list of characters I really want to see!
Characters McKala Would Like To Play
1. Lyria - FC: Jodie Whittaker
Lyria is probably going to be my labors characters, or I may do the labors twice for a total of 12 if I can get to a good place mentally irl for 12. Or I gotta start killing people off muahaha. Anyway, I have a great story for Lyria and I can’t wait to bring her here!
Tumblr media
2. Paulette [Ho/Takei/Mirzadeh] FC: Maggie Q or Levy Tran; OR Ishihara Satomi OR Tala Ashe or Sarah Shahi or Laleh Pourkarim
So! Kit and I are talking about bringing the Bimbettes from Beauty and The Beast in eventually. I’ll be oldest sister Paulette, Kit is baby sis Laurette, and we just need middle sister Claudette! I’ll likely be getting Lyria first so this will be several months out. But I wanted to mention it here. This is the Google Doc where we’re started planning -- we have a cool story so far, we’d love a third sister to join us!
We have fc picked out we like equally for the sisters to be Iranian-French, Japanese-French, or Vietnamese-French. If we don’t get a bite in a month or so, we’ll settle on ethnicity ourselves no problem, but as of now we’ve got lots of options!
3.  Kidagakash “Kida” Nedakh -- FC: Jessica Mauboy or Aaradhna
I really like the idea of Kida’s fc being indigenous, especially Australia and Oceania indigenous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Characters Y’all Should Play - with a FC idea
Gaston and Art Framagucci (FC Suggestions: So many)
Look, this is 100% selfish but come play Franny’s 40-year-old-plus himbo big brothers! Some suggestions: Tom Ellis, Todd Grinnell, Tom Hiddleston, Tom Mison, Josh Duhamel, Richard Armitage, and John Krasinki.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tallulah Robinson (FC Suggestions: include Mary Kate Wiles, Alina Kovalenko, Kate Mara)
Join the Robinson fam ahhhh
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Olivia Da Silva (FC Suggestion: Marina Nery)
I made this skeleton woowoo! Come play an Avaloran character! A young sorceress honing her craft! Worldbuild Avalor with me, yaaaay! I put Brazilian-preferred on the skeleton for fc suggestions because the Avalor we’ve crafted in game is a bilingual society in South America with Portuguese and Spanish influence about equally. It’s not requiiired, like you can change her last name to be Spanish and not Portuguese, but!
Tumblr media
Professor Guadalupe “Lupe” Mendoza (FC Suggestions by Mckala: Gina Torres, Charo Bogarin, Jessica Alba, Velina Hsau Houston, Lana Parrilla)
COME PLAY A COOL AVALORAN WOOOO
Join me in Avalor world! Lupe Mendoza is so cooool, she’s a professor, a scholar, a genius, a really cool lady forced to flee Avalor because of the new dictatorship.
Tumblr media
Jasmine (FC Suggestions by Mckala: So Many. Including Claudia Doumit,  Njoud Al Shammari, Dalal Aldoub,  Adila Sedraïa, Sonita Alizadeh)
I’m honestly shook Jasmine’s not taken yet y’all! She’s a great character, you can go so many diff directions with her and HEL-LO worldbuilding!
Tumblr media
Li Shang (FC idea: Shawn Dou)
Y’all how do we not have all the Mulan characters yet??? But I would pay someone physical money for a Li Shang ahhhhh

STORIES TELLING: ED TEACH’S JOURNEY FROM ARMOR TO AUTHENTICITY
One of the joys of watching season 2 of Our Flag Means Death is discovering the visual parallels with season 1 that add so much meaning and richness to the story. With affecting, extraordinary economy of visual storytelling, we can see the progression of Ed’s journey from choosing armor in season 1, episode 10 – Wherever You Go, There You Are, to choosing authenticity in season 2, episode 7 – Man on Fire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[I have to point out the gorgeous cinematography here. Panning down on the left, panning up on the right. The clear resolve of S2 E7 Ed turning to ascend to the deck. I also love the timing of both shots. S2 E7 Ed is turning toward the red silk that S1 E10 Ed will release.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
S1 E10 Ed considers the red silk. The symbol of his tenderness, softness, and vulnerability.
S2 E7 Ed hoists his leathers and his firearm - his literal and symbolic armor and protection - to the edge of the deck.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
S1 E10 Ed releases his tenderness, softness, and vulnerability to the sea.
S2 E7 Ed releases his armor and protection to the sea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
S1 E10 Ed throws the person who understands what he’s going through and is in a position to help him work through it in a healthy way, into the sea.
S2 E7 Ed makes breakfast-in-bed for the person with whom he shares emotional and physical intimacy. An act of care and service that strengthens his bond with Stede.
Show, don't tell doesn't seem adequate to describe these two sequences. They are masterful and say so, so much.
The double-edged sword of self-awareness
You’ve really got to give it to Ed. He’s making huge progress. Making a better choice for himself. Moving forward.
Change can be terrifying. For Ed to release that which protected him for decades is, well… it’s courageous and demonstrates hard-won self-awareness and integrity.
Of course, choosing to be authentic to yourself doesn’t translate into automatic relationship building. Understanding and communicating with other people, particularly the person you are in love with, is a related but different skill set. It is also true that, once you know that you can’t perform a persona to please other people, no matter how much you love them, you risk losing them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ed in the second frame, above, kills me. He knows that piracy might be the wedge that drives Stede and him apart. He is trying to share how he feels. But Stede is so enamored with finally being a successful pirate (and glowing from the best (and only) love-sex of his life) that he can't hear Ed.
I love that OFMD takes no shortcuts in matters of the heart. If these lads are going to be together for reals, they are going to have to work for it, and there is still much work to be done.
I'm looking forward to likely being simultaneously emotionally fulfilled and mentally devastated by the season 2 finale in about 30 hours.
This meta was written before OFMD season 2 has fully aired. No idea what’s going to happen in the finale (and I’ve generally fled social media to avoid spoilers). I’ll be back, looking at everyone’s fascinating posts after episode 8 airs.

My WOMEN Celebrity cutie List
UPDATED JUNE 14th October 25, my men list in linked I updated and now to keep to three times challenge, here you go with 23 ladies, yes 7 x 3 = 21, but there too many cuties I need to see more in movies and tv. XD
I just wanted to make a list as a response to this and I will admit these ladies have not as in-depth reason, seeing how many there be. XD Also, I try to narrow down to ladies I like still or whatever reason. XP I claimed I could make a list of women celebrity three times the linked, so I am going to see if I can. XD I want to thank my family for introducing old films, yes 23 and I find couple beauties of old Hollywood well beautiful. The order not too important. Also, this list could continue, just thought off as many I have to admit in recent memory are attractive. XD ---
23. Audrey Hepburn (I find her beautiful with BOTH long and short hair, even her famous pixie cut so flattering on her. I admit she low on my list for she smoked and smoking I can never feel comfortable my significant other doing)
Tumblr media
22. Mia Farrow (when younger, sadly few good gifs with short hair, bonus she voiced a character I liked The Last Unicorn)
Tumblr media
21. Anna Paquin (fun fact she is bi, I have low on the list for she not in much I have seen)
Tumblr media
20. Allison Hannigan (her haircut below so adorable, as Willow in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lily* in How Met Your Mother were delightful performances)
Tumblr media
19. Jamie Clayton (I have to see more movies/show with her :] )
Tumblr media
18. Emilia Clarke (I have seen her in Me Before You, so outside the too long Game of Thrones, please suggest where else to watch her)
Tumblr media
17. Zoe Saldana
Tumblr media
16. Rosario Dawson
Tumblr media
15. Natalie Portman (sorry to show her crying, but her with long hair and shaved are fun looks on her)
Tumblr media
14. Laverne Cox
Tumblr media
13. Anna Hathway
Tumblr media

So I'm going to be playing a character described as the most beautiful woman ever, and most people pick a white blonde fc, but I really want to go someone who is more unique (not someone who looks like 5 other actresses), so could you please suggest stunning women in their late 20s, early 30s who have a unique look of some sort? Preferably a woc, to challenge European beauty standards. Thank you! I know it's a vague question, and beauty is subjective, so if you can't help, I understand

#86 Mary Anne and Camp BSC: Chapter 4
What’s this? Someone doesn't want to take part in a BSC project? Also I hate Karen.
School ends for the 238th time, and there's no mention of an 8th grade graduation, as usual. The BSC also says goodbye to any free time with the first day of Camp BSC. I'm sure Stacey is thanking her lucky stars as she does shots and parties with all those badass Cool Kids!
The BSC has all 8 sitters working (would have been 9, but that bitch Stacey left them) and 22 kids signed up: Jamie Newton, Andrew and Demon Child Karen Brewer, Bobby and Alicia Gianelli (are they ever mentioned in a BSC book before or after this?), Matt and Haley Braddock, one-half of the Pikes (everyone from Vanessa down), Nancy Dawes, Hannie and Linny Papadakis, Marilyn and Carolyn Arnold, David Michael Thomas, Ricky Torres (the long-suffering Mr. Karen Brewer), Natalie Springer and a kid I never heard of named Chris Lamar. Oh, and all the kids from Stoneybrook Academy have been to circus camp before (Bobby went to a different one...wait, there's two circus camps in the Stoneybrook area?) So since they've been before, they should be really eager to do it all over again! Right? RIGHT?!?
Claudia makes the BSCers tye-dyed shirts to wear to camp. I guess she screwed Mary Anne's up and didn't put enough rubber bands on it because on the cover, it's solid purple! Way to go, Claudia. The 7-year-olds at my Girl Scout camp were able to handle tye-dye and you can't?
So Claudia shows up and they set up some paper and crayons for the kids and decide to have them draw their favorite circus animal. Logan arrives on his bike. Mary Anne says he looks handsome on a bike. I'm sure she's envisioning him cycling up the street with his shirt open and the sun glistening off his body while his hair billows in the wind. And he's promptly assigned the task of taking Jamie Newton to the bathroom. Mrs. Newton can't be bothered to have her son use the bathroom before handing him off to the BSC?
The Gianellis are the last to arrive. As soon as Mary Anne tries leading Alicia over to the coloring table so they can draw elephants and camels, she starts shrieking for her mom. Mary Anne and Claudia sit her down and color with her but her gaze doesn't leave her mother. Well, Kristy is surprised when Mrs. Gianelli says to her in an undertone “I suppose I can go now,” and bolts just like all the other horrible, neglectful parents in Stoneybrook. That bitch! At least Alicia has the BSC to watch over her and raise her to be a good, able citizen to the community. Alicia looks petrified, but concentrates on her coloring. Another meltdown averted, thanks to the BSC!
But, it doesn't last for long. After a mid-morning juice break (which Mary Anne is relieved about because there was no “juice mishaps.” I think you'd only have to worry about juice mishaps if Jackie Rodowsky was there. He'd probably just look at the juice boxes and they'd all explode), Kristy announces they're going to the park. Vanessa does some annoying poetry and seems to have Marilyn under her spell too. ARGH. Even Mary Anne remarks it's awful.
Hold up! One kid doesn't want to go! *gasp* Who dares defy the orders of the BSC? It's Alicia, who's still standing there while Vanessa calls out “The park, the trees, if you please!” You know what? Alicia probably doesn't want to go because of all your annoying poetry! Shut up, Vanessa!
That last line of “poetry” must have hit a raw nerve because Alicia starts crying hysterically. “What if Mommy comes back? What if I'm not here?” Though, in her defense, she has reason to worry, since the parents of Stoneybrook love to dump their kids off with a babysitter at any given opportunity.
The other kids, by this point, are getting restless, and Vanessa demands “Will we get to the park at least by dark?” SHUT UP, VANESSA! Mary Anne suggests that she stay behind with Alicia and Kristy gets mad! Oh come on, you see the little girl is freaking the fuck out because she doesn't want to leave and you're mad she doesn't want to do something you decreed? Get over yourself and let Mary Anne watch her! Mallory agrees with Mary Anne and the others bring the kids to the park for the first stage of the brainwashing.
While the group's at the park, Mary Anne walks Alicia around the backyard. She sympathizes with Alicia's abandonment issues and reassures herself that Alicia will get better when she sees that her mom always comes back every day. After lunch, the kids are split into age groups for storytime (would a 9-year-old be willing to sit down for storytime?) and the littlest kids are taken inside by Jessi and Mallory for naps.
With that over with, Kristy officially welcomes them to camp and the kids are thrilled because they love the BSC more than they love their own families yay! She announces it's a circus camp and immediately, Karen shoots up her hand and uses her Outdoor Voice to ask if it's a real circus camp like the one she went to. Shut up, Little Miss Showoff! Ricky and Hannie chime in and ask if they're going to be doing real circus stuff like walking tightropes and taming lions. I wish there was lion taming at the real circus camp so it could eat Karen.
Claudia tries not to laugh, while Kristy asks who's been to circus camp. Karen corrects her with a “REAL circus camp” and all Kristy does is say her name in a warning tone. That's not going to stop your little snob of a stepsister! The Stoneybrook Academy kids all raise their hands and Kristy spins it around by saying they'll be a great addition to help them put on a great circus. You keep thinking that, Kristy. That'll never happen with Karen in charge of her little group. It starts right away with Karen instructing that they can't have tightropes up in the air since they couldn't do that at real circus camp.
This is going to be a long book D:
Thankfully, Kristy averts any other circus pretentiousness and starts up a game of freeze tag which keeps the kids occupied until the parents show up and Alicia is thrilled to be reunited with her mom. With her mom there, she happily joins in on the game. Mrs. Gianelli explains that this is the first time Alicia's been separated from her and she was tempted to check up on them at lunch but thought it would make things worse. As they leave, Alicia asks her mom if she has to come back tomorrow. Uh oh...is the BSC losing a client? Hopefully, Kristy didn't hear that.
As they clean up and prepare for the next day, Mary Anne says they're a “little” tired. Geez, being BSC members must have an effect on you if you aren't completely exhausted from chasing after 22 kids for a day, dealing with one who has serious separation issues and trying to quell a rebellion by Karen the Brat! Mary Anne's also a little worried about Alicia, but the other members laugh it off, saying she'll get over it.
