#Repost @womenphotograph with @get_repost ・・・ Photo by @Robin_Schwartz. Tal’ngai Dah’run Grey-headed Flying Fox Pteripus Poliocephalus Tal’ngai, suffering from severe sunburn, was rescued on the Gold Coast, Australia, by staff from the Australian Bat Clinic. They thought he was a piece of paper on the ground to clean up until he moved. He was identified as leucistic grey-headed flying fox with a rare genetic mutation. Leucistic animals maintain patches of normal color and eye pigment. Tal’ngai translucent wings and pink skin made him vulnerable to predators and especially susceptible to sun damage. He could not be released with his siblings after recovering. Tal’ngai was lovingly cared for by Trish Wimberley, director of the Australian Bat Clinic & Wildlife Trauma Center, who named him Tal'ngai Dha'run, which means 'white wing' in the Yugambeh indigenous dialect. Fascinated with bats since grammar school, I was inspired by @JoelSartore and @lijohnson, two National Geographic photographers, who had photographed flying foxes at Australian Bat Clinic & Wildlife flying foxes. Joel helped me connect with Trish Wimberley, the director of the clinic, who was most generous to me on both trips. Trish thought my photos might help awareness of the increasingly dire plight of dying flying foxes due to extreme heat, cyclones and loss of habitat. There are only so many volunteers and rehab facilities to help the thousands of flying foxes dying on the ground. Flying foxes are an extremely important part of Australia’s ecosystem. My first excuse to travel to Australia was exhibiting and presenting at 2017 Head On Photo Festival , the second was the Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography project on caretakers taking form. I photographed volunteers working in their homes to care for pups that need to be bottle feed and cleaned 24/7. The rescue on the ground was relentless, lots of injuries, deaths….I always thought they would make it, then they did not. Heartfelt thank you Kim. I am still figuring out how to do a good job photographing the work of heroes. @reptileartist and so many more. @guggfellows https://www.instagram.com/p/BxpWocWA9cF/?igshid=1q1qas0jv1nn4
