There was something to be said about Yongqin’s tardiness when neither you or Kun are surprised when he didn’t show up at the time that the two of you secretly agreed between each other to tell him. In true Yongqin fashion, he was late at the later time that he was given. As you and Kun flipped through the menu for the nth time, you traded plausible reasons as to why your friend was late. The last time he was late it was because he got distracted by Yukhei’s challenge to see who could stuff more jelly beans in their mouths, and the time before that, he claimed that he was helping Kunhang and Yangyang figure out whether or not the pavement was hot enough to fry an egg–their hypothesis was a bust and they ran away from the scene of the crime, leaving the raw egg behind until Kun berated them and made the three of them clean it up under his supervision.
Just as the waitress was about to approach your table for the fourth time, Yongqin finally made an appearance. As he beelined towards your table in a hurry, you shot an apologetic smile at your waitress as she suppressed a laugh, already accustomed to you and your group of friends, and nodded at you cordially. You would definitely be tipping her more than you usually did, she was always one of your favorite member of staff.
“Sorry! Sorry!” Yongqin said breathlessly as he plopped down onto his seat, placing his tote bag on the ear of the chair rather than on the floor. “I was actually going to be early this time!” He declared. At the deadpan expression that you shared with Kun, he added, “but I helped an old lady cross the street and then she started having a conversation with me.”
It was certainly unsurprising that that was the reason why he was late. Dejun must have instilled even more compassion towards the elderly in him as he did with the rest of you by volunteering your group at nursing homes and the like. Once you gave your orders and have settled in, the three of you talked about university and the upcoming movies that you wanted to watch the next time all seven of you went out together.
“Oh! Actually,” Yongqin spoke after a small pause, mouth full of pad thai, “that old lady from this morning gave me something.”
“Don’t speak when your mouth is full, you could choke or something.” Kun chided as the other man roughly patted at his pockets, grumbling to himself as he searched for whatever it was that she had given him.
“Sorry dad,” he replied sarcastically, coaxing a chuckle from you and a playful shove from Kun that was successfully dodged. “Ah ha!” He exclaimed, thrusting his left hand in front of you to show off a large white bean. “Tadah!”
You shared a look with Kun before returning your incredulous stare at Yongqin, who was still smiling excitedly. “She,” you paused for extra emphasis at your disbelief, “gave you a bean?”
“It’s not just ‘a bean’!” He huffed defensively, throwing you a mock glare.
“Uh huh,” Kun hummed, “what it then?” He challenged before taking a large sip of his water. You leaned back so that your shoulder blades were touching the back of your seat as you folded your arms across your chest, staring at Yongqin expectantly. He mumbled something incoherent that made both you and Kun lean towards him in hopes of hearing him better, but to no avail. “What did you say?” Kun asked, face pinched in confusion.
“It’s a”–Yongqin’s eyes swung back and forth between the two of you as he licked his lips–“magic bean.” Fortunately you weren’t drinking your soda because you surely would have choked on it, or did spit-take like in that one episode of iCarly, because the minute the words left his mouth, you keeled into yourself as you exploded into fits of laughter. Kun was quick to join you, unsuccessfully stifling his laugh behind his hand. “Guys,” the blond man whined, “it’s not funny!”
When your howls of laughter died down into small giggles you said, “so wait, is this going to be like Jack and the Beanstalk? Are you going to, like, steal golden eggs and sell them for tons of money?” Your statement had Kun slapping a hand on his thigh, practically crying as he continued laughing.
“Uh, no?” The fact that his reply sounded like a question made you want to laugh all over again. “Okay you know what?” Yongqin asked, clearly sounding like he had enough of the two of you, “if you think it isn’t magic then why don’t you grow it?” Never one to back down from a challenge, you agreed. “Awesome! The lady said it’ll bring luck which is good ‘cause you’ll need it to get your degree.”
You squawked in return, knowing that you were unable to come up with a witty comeback since you knew that the road to becoming an engineer was a tough one.
From there, the three of you obliterated your meals, paid and left in search of a thing of compost and a plain pot, which you made Yongqin promise he would decorate before you planted the bean, from a nearby garden centre.
You planted it that same evening, rearranging the items on your desk that stood against the window so that you could position the small pot in an area with optimum sunlight–a difficult feat since it was nearing November.
Unlike in Jack and the Beanstalk, you didn’t wake up to a thick, massive beanstalk that punched it’s way through your ceiling and into the sky. What you did wake up to was a cute little sprout that had you snapping a picture to send into your groupchat so that you could coo over it to your friends.
*
The whole situation had to be a dream. In fact, you were ninety-nine percent sure that you were still asleep. It was entirely impossible that your plant, which at that point had grown tall with a bud the size of a pistachio on top, had disappeared and left a tiny person in its wake. The little guy was still asleep, curled in on himself and blissfully unaware of the thoughts racing in your mind. There were numerous questions that you wanted to ask, the main ones being: if you weren’t dreaming, how was any of this real? Was the bean that Yongqin was given magical after all? And, also, how was he fully clothed? However the big block that prevented you from believing that the situation was a reality, was that it just wasn’t possible scientifically.
Your internal freak-out came to a screeching halt when he began to move slowly, eyes blinking away sleep as he stood up and stretched. Unsure of what to do, you continued to stare at him in disbelief as he scanned the room. When his gaze landed on you, a staring contest ensued. Neither of you looked away and you refused to melt at how cute he was with his tousled black hair and doe-like dark brown eyes.
“Uh,” what were you supposed to say when a tiny person took over your plant? “Hi,” you welcomed, hoping that your smile wasn’t as awkward as your voice. “My name’s y/n, it’s nice to meet you.”
The boy’s (or was a he man? how did tiny people age?) expression went from blank to wary. It was clear that he was fully awake at that point, hunching in on himself as he remained mute. Evidently, he lacked trust in you–if the way he frantically scrambled backward at the step that you took toward him was any indication.
Frowning, you decided to leave the room. You made your way to the kitchen and headed directly towards the fridge. Some sort of peace offering needed to be made. You needed to show that you meant no harm and what better way to do that then to feed him? The state of your fridge was sad but you grabbed the box of strawberries and diced them into tiny pieces.
“I brought you some food.” You announced gently when you stepped back inside your room. You waited patiently as he eyed you for a few moments before slowly making his way down the pot, jumping down your stack of textbooks before sitting by your laptop. “Um, I just cut up some strawberries since it’s the only thing I could find.” You explained as you placed the chopping board of fruit onto your desk.
He stared at it momentarily in curiosity at first before he hesitantly reached out and grabbed a piece. With a quick glance at you, he shoved as much of it as he could inside his mouth. His eyes widened comically, cheeks resembling a chipmunk, as he chewed. After swallowing, he was quick to shovel down the remaining fruit.
“So,” you began as he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, “do you have a name that I can call you by?” When he shook his head at you in response, you frowned. “Okay, well, how ‘bout we give you one then?”
The names you stated from the top of your head had him shooting you various expressions of disapproval–the name Yixing had him blowing a raspberry, Yifan had him giving you a thumbs down, at the suggestion of Zitao you received a huff as he folded his arms, and Luhan ended up with him shaking his head violently. There were only so many EXO members you could name him after before you gave up.
“Alright, what about,” you paused. Unfortunately, creativity wasn’t something you possessed. “Sicheng?” It was the name of a kid you went to middle school with. From what you could remember, he sat beside you in a few of your classes and kept to himself. The silent nature of the tiny person reminded you of him. At first you thought it was going to be another fail of a suggestion with the way his face shrewd but then, to your surprise, he nodded in agreement. You couldn’t suppress a giggle when he bashfully pointed at where the strawberries were before making grabby hands. “Okay Sicheng, we can get you more strawberries.”
That had him smiling brilliantly, easily jumping onto the palm of your outstretched hand. You set him on your shoulder and then grabbed the chopping board before heading back down to the kitchen again.
Once Sicheng had gotten his fill of strawberries he sat down against your glass of water, planted his hands on his stomach and closed his eyes as he smiled serenely. Since he loved the fruit so much, you would have to get more of it in the future which would be difficult since they weren’t in season.
“We should go grocery shopping,” Sicheng opened an eye but closed it soon after. “So, what, you wanna just lay there?” His answer was clear by the way he didn’t move from his position. Mouth twisting you said, “we can get more strawberries.” That had him standing up in a flash, raising his arms in the air as he waited for you to carry him up.
Bundled up in a puffer jacket that layered over your hoodie, you stood opposite from your door as you thought about where you could place Sicheng. The pockets of your coat would probably suffocate him and you had the tendency to jam your hands in them at random times. If you placed him on your shoulder like you have been doing so far, other people would spot him in an instant. Unable to find a suitable spot to hide him, you suggested that he stayed at home to which you received a pout. Before you would swear that Yukhei and Yangyang had the cutest pouts but Sicheng definitely took the cake–especially with those puppy eyes of his.
Sicheng’s tiny head poked out of the pocket of your joggers. The only reason why you witnessed his movement was because you kept checking on him, just in case something went awry. He was peering curiously at the mini supermarket you were in, his head wildly swinging back and forth. You knew that he was probably curious and so, after a quick glance around the store, you lightly tapped the crown of his head with the tip of you finger. At your touch he immediately disappeared inside your pocket. You decided to stick two fingers inside his hideout, hoping that he would get the idea and climb onto them. When he did, you gently raised your arm and placed him on your shoulder.
The small sounds of amazement that he created surprised you because you thought that he didn’t, or rather couldn’t, speak at all considering that he only communicated with you using various facial expressions and body movement. Briefly, you wondered how his voice sounded; would it be high or low pitched? Would he speak fast like Dejun and Yangyang did when they were excited about something? Or would he speak similar to Kun, calm and slow? You hoped to find out soon–but only when he was comfortable, of course.
The trek home took longer than usual because you fed into Sicheng’s curiosity and allowed him to walk on his own rather than stuffing him back into your pocket. It was definitely because you loved the way he looked at everything in awe, head whipping back and forth as he took in the scenery. At first you were nervous about setting him down to let him roam freely, afraid that he would run away or somehow alert his presence to the rest of society. But you soon figured out that there was nothing to worry about because he was stealthy and would look back every so often as if he was afraid that you would run away from him.
As you neared your apartment complex, Sicheng climbed onto one of your sneakers and clutched the laces so that he wouldn’t fall off. The sight of him made you titter quietly to yourself as you adjusted your pace so that he wouldn’t swing side to side wildly. When the distance you walked towards the building shortened even further, you could see six familiar figures loitering around the entrance. Before you could usher Sicheng back into his hiding place, Kunhang spotted you and started waving madly as he began running towards you. Yukhei and Yangyang followed in suit and you were thankful when they took the shopping bags away from you, your arms aching at the weight your massive food haul.
“Why are you guys here so early?” You asked as Kunhang placed his arm around your shoulder while you subtly attempted to eye Sicheng. If you were hosting game night, they always came a little after four o’clock in the afternoon.
“We missed you.” Dejun replied as he smiled charmingly, his arm hooked around a box of Clue and Monopoly. Yonqin mocked him, swiping non-existent long hair behind his ear as he batted his eyelashes at him.
Arching a brow you said, “but we faced-timed last night.” When you tapped the electronic key onto the machine on the wall which opened the door, you added, “and we spent our break together yesterday.” Out of all your friends, Dejun’s lunch schedule mirrored yours the most which made university all the more bearable. As Dejun defended his statement, the others teased him like they always did. You didn’t know how he didn’t snap at them, just absorbed their words with a small huff of laughter or faux hits at their general direction.
It was a surprise that you made it to your apartment without the boys noticing Sicheng–he was still gripping onto your laces, peering cautiously at your friends. At some point you needed to introduce Sicheng to them since they were a solid presence in your life. You could already hear Yongqin saying, ‘I told you so!’ since he did tell you that the bean was magic. You already knew that he would reference it in the future when he needed to prove something.
Later on that night, when you all decided to take a short break, you took the opportunity to show them Sicheng. The minute you opened the door and went to remove your sneakers, he immediately slid off of it and zoomed in the direction of your bedroom. You followed him, muttering a weak excuse to your friends and found him shoving your door with all his might. The laugh that escaped you made him cast a playful glare at your direction, huffing as he crossed his arms. After you opened the door he ran to your bed, climbed up the leg and eventually made it up onto your mattress and then walked up to your pillows to flop on them as he closed his eyes. You left the room when you noticed his breathing evening out.
As you relayed your morning to your friends they all looked at you disbelievingly, like you had finally lost your marbles, which you expected. If you were in their position you definitely wouldn’t have believed yourself either. You led them to your room, silencing their words of incredulity by pressing your index finger onto your lips. They played into your request, mumbling something to one another giddily.
“Don’t freak out.” You said as you stood in front of your bed, blocking their view of Sicheng. When they gave you a chorus of affirmatives, you stepped aside to reveal your tiny sized acquaintance. The longer they stared, jaws practically touching the floor, you rambled and showed them the pot as evidence. Luckily you had been a proud parent of your plant, documenting it’s growth to them in your groupchat, as it helped strengthen your story. They knew you would never do anything to harm your beloved plant.
“I- So-” Yongqin struggled to find the right words before settling on exclaiming, “oh my God!” The others murmured something similar to express their wonder. “That means the bean was magic! Oh my God, y/n!” You prepared yourself as he whipped his head towards you, “I told you so!” Then, because he was Yongqin, he launched into a dramatic speech about how none of you should ever doubt him because he was always right and, nice old ladies never lie, y/n.
Yongqin’s lengthy rant was cut short when Kun and Yukhei cooed, followed by the others apart from you and Yongqin. You spun around to find that Sicheng had woken up, looking extremely disgruntled until he caught sight of your friends and scrambled to hide underneath your duvet. You eyed the blond accusingly before you lifted your duvet and found Sicheng huddled into himself, his arms around his bent legs.
“It’s alright Sicheng,” you whispered gently, trying to coax him out of his position. All you got were two dark eyes peeking at you in return. “They’re very nice,” you added to which he moved his gaze to your friends quickly before returning it back to you, “trust me?”
It felt like a gamble to ask that of him because the two of you hardly knew each other but you had hoped that you showed him enough kindness to earn his trust or make him feel safe in your presence at the very least. Knowing he wasn’t quick to make decisions, you waited it out. Sicheng slowly stood up, arms out to try and balance himself on the mattress. He was quick to jump onto the palm of your hand when you reached out to him. Once you he was settled, you turned to meet the excited faces of your friends.
“Sicheng these are my friends,” you announced as you used your other hand to gesture at them, “friends, this is Sicheng.” They spoke all at once, voices piling on top of one another, which made Sicheng’s eyes widen in surprise, probably unused to such a loud volume, as they introduced themselves to him.
Game night was over, it seemed, judging from the way they enthusiastically tried to befriend Sicheng and show him the wonders of the world.
“Oh my God!” Yongqin exclaimed as you all ate some hotpot, which Sicheng adored if the way he was scarfing down his food was a sign. The rest of you looked at him expectantly as you munched your food. “This isn’t Jack in the Beanstalk, this is Thumbelina!”
*
Life with Sicheng was a simple one once he became accustomed to your daily routine that mainly consisted of attending university and hanging out with your friends. You were one of the few lucky university students that didn’t have to work a part-time job because your parents made enough income to support you financially even though you no longer lived with them. It wasn’t that you didn’t want to get one, in fact you did apply for several vacancies, but your parents refused and told you that they would keep giving you financial aid as long as you continued to study hard. They always gave you more money than you needed which you tucked away in your savings account.
The large amount of free time allowed you and the boys to take Sicheng to different sights; you took him to the zoo and the aquarium with Yukhei and Yongqin, cooing over how scared he was of the tigers, hippos and sharks. Yangyang and Kunhang took him to the local outdoor basketball court where they played a few one on one games while waiting for their allocated physics lab time. By the time you found them they relocated to the arcade, Sicheng focused intensely on one of their games as he remained slightly hidden in Kynhang’s backpack. Dejun decided to treat you to some ice-cream, ecstatic to include Sicheng who ended up having so much of it that it caused a sugar rush which resulted in the rest of the day being spent catching up to him and his hyperactive behavior. Kun spent his time with him in the music room that was available for students on campus, playing him several songs on the piano and even composed on specifically for the tiny boy.
Unfortunately, Sicheng’s sight-seeing trips were put on hold due to upcoming exams. Exam season was hell for everyone and you spent it cooped up in your room, frying your brain as you tried to learn off useful information and tricks that would help you solve sample problems that included math–which was everywhere considering the degree you were trying to obtain.
There were tears welling in your eyes as you tried to work out some sample problems that your lecturer heavily hinted would make an appearance on the exam paper. Eraser bits were scattered all over your desk, the paper rough and void of its grids due to the amount of times you had to rub out your frequent mistakes. An ugly voice in your head was telling you to give up, that it was your worse subject anyway and that the repeat paper would probably be easier to do. You were ashamed to give in but it was extremely late and you spent the whole day studying, so you thought that it was fair that you could go to sleep.
When you woke up the next day, after your big breakfast with Sicheng, you reluctantly returned to your desk to continue the problem but stopped when you saw that it was already completed. Eyebrows furrowed, you turned to your small friend who was happily listening to an audiobook–he recently discovered poetry and came across a certain old poet that he came to really like.
You hated to disrupt his peace but couldn’t contain the need to voice your question. “Sicheng,” you called, he paused the audiobook and gave you his full attention, “did you do this?” There wasn’t anybody else in the house except for the two of you and if it wasn’t you who completed it then it was clearly him but you had to make sure, seeing as having a secret fairy godmother or something wouldn’t be so far fetched considering, well, Sicheng. “Sorry for bothering you but I just have to ask. You did this for me, didn’t you?” A shy smile made its way onto his face as he lowered his gaze, nodding his head in reply. You took him in for a moment, eyed your copy and then returned your eyes onto him. “Wow,” you breathed, “you’re so smart!” He became even more shy as you showered him in praises. “How did you solve it?” You asked eventually, you were stuck on that particular problem for days.
Sicheng looked extremely adorable as he wielded your mechanical pencil in his arms, using his whole body whenever he wrote something. He hadn’t spoken yet in the two months that he’s lived with you but he was still great at explaining how solve the problem, smiling at you encouragingly after he gestured for you to work one on your own. It took you longer than he did to solve the new sample question but after he reviewed it and made some corrections, he smiled proudly at you and urged you to keep practicing by gesturing to several other questions.
From there, Sicheng listened to his audiobook on your tablet on the desk so that he could keep an eye on you as he munched on some corn chips. Once you finished the remainder of the problem questions, seeming easier and easier to solve the more you did them, he did his best to hand you a full sized chip but due to his stature he could only offer you a crumb from the end of the bag. You thanked him as he placed it on top of your open hand, melting at his cuteness.
In the following weeks that lead up to your exams, Sicheng became your study buddy. It seemed that he had an affinity for math, gladly helping you whenever it was involved (which was a lot) and although you questioned how he possessed such knowledge, you were entirely grateful that you had someone to help you double check your answers and help you whenever you were facing some difficulty. You deeply wished that you could take him with you in the exam hall but you knew that it wasn’t a good idea.
When exam season was over, you and the boys decided to sleepover at Kunhang’s house for the weekend. The sole purpose of it being at his house was due to his projector, which was great for streaming movies on Netflix to create an indoor cinema type of atmosphere. As always, you and Kun provided food while the others brought over their portable heaters because of the poor insulation of the building. Sicheng was particularly excited about the sleepover since he hadn’t seen the others since the small New Year celebration that you guys had.
It was plain as day that Sicheng loved the boys just as much as you did. Whenever they were around, he was extra content, willingly participating in whatever mischief they planned. Though he thoroughly enjoyed their company, you observed that he evaded their frequent attempts to touch him. Touching him only seemed to be reserved especially for you and you only. You tried not to think about what that meant although it did nothing to suppress the fondness that it made you feel whenever he stuck closely to you.
Feeling a tiny poke on your thigh, you looked down to find Sicheng offering you a small piece of popcorn. Ever since he offered you some of his corn chips he took it as his job to present you with food whenever it was possible; bits of strawberries whenever you chopped some up for him, using all his strength to push gummy bears towards you whenever Yangyang had a bag or blocks of chocolate whenever Yongqin was eating some. It was endearing, especially the way his whole face lit up whenever you took it and ate it in one go.
After you took the piece of popcorn and ate it, Sicheng turned back to the wall where The Pursuit of Happyness was playing. From your peripheral vision you noticed Yongqin staring at you from where he sat on the opposite side of the room, a shit-eating grin forming when Sicheng laid on your thigh with his back against your stomach. It felt as though the private moment the two of you shared was invaded so you made a quick face at him before returning you attention back to the film. You didn’t want to know what he was thinking.
*
The end of your second year gave you a stress-free summer since you didn’t have to repeat any exams from either semester. The grades you obtained were phenomenal, closer to 4.0 this time around and there were some tears in your eyes when you saw it on your phone screen. It was definitely Sicheng’s doing, you couldn’t have done it without him. Yongqin was right when the old lady said that he would bring you luck. As per tradition, you and the boys packed up and went to the lakehouse that your parents owned–as a kid you would often go during summer when your parents wanted to have a getaway in favor for some family time. The yearly tradition was something that started when Kun obtained his full license and would drive all of you around until he decided that he wanted to go on a trip with you guys.
You and Yongqin laid on beach chairs as you watched the others swim. Sicheng was with them and although at first you felt your heart grip with anxiety at the thought of him going swimming, it chipped away when you saw the others taking care to show him how to swim despite his size. Now there he was, swimming in all sorts of directions as he paid no mind at the antics that the others played.
Your eyes on him were torn away when Yongqin spoke. “Do you ever think about what it would be like if he was a full sized person?”
Of course you did. You thought about it so much you started to dream about it–about what it would be like if he were human sized instead of the six inches he stood at. You liked to imagine that he would be tall, maybe taller than you, and move as gracefully as Yongqin. In your imagination he would speak charmingly and be quick witted, perhaps he would even have a loud laugh. One that was so contagious that you wouldn’t be able to do anything but laugh along with him. Sicheng was incredible in his pocket-sized form but sometimes you couldn’t help but think that he would be even better in full size. You wanted to hang out with him regularly but there were only so many things you could do with him at the size he was. It was getting increasingly difficult to shield him from society, especially since more people were out and about due to the beautiful weather.
“Yeah,” your eyes moved down to your lap, “I guess I have.” Is what you say in return, suppressing your thoughts.
“What if I told you that we could find a way?” You couldn’t look at Yongqin fast enough which made him laugh a little. “I’ve been seeing the old lady around more and more recently, and she keeps looking at me like she knows which is probably because she does.” He admitted and allowed you to soak in his words before adding, “I think we should talk to her.”
You kept silent as you thought about his suggestion. You would love it if Sicheng could somehow grow and live like the rest of you. Maybe he could attend your university or something, he could definitely major in math if he wanted to. But that was what you wanted. Sicheng had to have a say in the matter because for all either of you knew, he actually liked being his size. You passed on your thoughts to Yongqin who nodded empathically, agreeing that you should ask before even thinking about approaching the woman who gave him the bean.
Sicheng cocked his head to the side when you asked him later that night as the rest of the boys stargazed at a slightly further distance, although you were pretty sure that Dejun fell asleep which wouldn’t be surprising at all considering that he could sleep anywhere. What you got in return was an eager nod that made you release a breath that you didn’t even know you were holding.
The remaining few days at the lakehouse were spent lazying about in the sun, watching as some of the boys tried their best at fishing although Dejun chose not to participate and reasoned that he couldn’t eat the fish he had caught knowing that he had to look it in the eye as its life was ending. Night was spent either stargazing or huddled around a fire as Kun played his guitar, the other boys singing in unison as he played their song requests. It had Sicheng swaying back and forth as he listened, completely enthralled.
While you loved the time that you spent there, you were more excited when you returned to your apartment. The thought of Sicheng finally being able to enjoy hanging out with you to his fullest ability was building up so much anticipation within you. Yongqin teased you about the transparency of your feelings and was quickly joined by the others but you couldn’t find it in you to care that much, instead focusing your gaze on Sicheng who looked at you with eyes bursting of hope.
Yongqin wasn’t kidding when he informed you that she was everywhere he went, he sent you a flood of text messages every single time he caught a glimpse of her. They usually ended up with him asking you whether or not you wanted him to go over to her but before you even had a chance to reply, you would receive another text from him telling you that she got away. Catching her was more difficult than you originally thought but eventually when you, Sicheng, Yongqin and Dejun were having some coffee at your local café, she walked in. She caught your eye, smiling mysteriously as she made her way over.
“I see he’s sprouted,” she said as soon as she arrived at your table, glancing at Sicheng. “Hi there little one.” That earned her a small smile as he shrunk in on himself. “So, you want him to be regular sized. Am I correct?” Without even questioning how she knew that to begin with, you nodded fervently. She produced a small, purple pouch from the inside of her jacket. “Make sure he sleeps on this tonight and everything will work accordingly.”
“Really?” You didn’t believe that it was that easy. Not that you knew magic or anything, didn’t even know it existed pre-Sicheng days, but there had to be a catch or something. She inclined her head regally toward you in reply. “Is there something I can give you in return, or something? Like, I dunno, money?”
She shook her head as she said, smiling kindly, “you have given him love and that is all that I wanted for him.” And with that she sauntered away, turning her head back only once to wink at you.
That night you slept early, too excited about the events that were going to transpire the next day.
*
When you woke up the next day, you found yourself face to face with a man who was still asleep. Sicheng as a regular sized man. You couldn’t believe it. When he opened his eyes, slowly widening when he realized the situation, he shot up and immediately jumped off of the bed. A tiny gasp escaped you at his height–he wasn’t as tall as Yukhei, who was in a lanky league of his own, but he was easily taller than the other boys. You watched as he examined his eyes in wonder, moved his legs repeatedly before inspecting himself in the mirror on your vanity table. After he had gotten his fill of surveying himself, he turned to stare at you and slowly walked toward you.
Once he was within touching distance, he held up his hand in front of you and waited for you to connect it with your own. When you did as he wanted, both of you marveled at the difference in size. Experimentally, he dropped his fingers in between yours and you followed in suit so that your hands were interlocking.
“Hi y/n,” Sicheng greeted, his voice scratchy from lack of use. “It’s nice to finally look at you eye to eye.” If you were immensely astonished by his sudden growth spurt, you were even more so by the pleasant sound of his voice–even though he sounded groggy, you could already tell that you were going to be enthralled whenever he spoke in the future.
“Wait,” you said, snapping out of your thoughts, “you can talk?! How come you never said a word before?”
Sicheng smiled shyly, his eyes wandering back to your interlocked hands as he said, “I liked listening to you talk.” A string of noises left your throat that made the tips of his ears a cherry red which made you noticed how one of them was adorably shaped like an elf’s.
“You liked listening to me talk? Sicheng,” you called, tugging at your hands until you gained his attention, “I love your voice. I should be listening to you talk.” In response to your declaration he let go of your hand in order to cup his face, his smile was so beautiful, so pretty, and wide that you were sure you melted into a puddle of goo.
Later that day, when the other boys barged into your apartment as quick as they could after you told them the news, it dawned on you that the man in front of you was fatal because he had everything, not just a cute face but also the brains and personality.
When Sicheng laughed at something that Yangyang said, you recalled the shit-eating grin that Yongqin sent your way that night at Kunhang’s house because you finally understood. Your eyes widened although they stayed glued to Sicheng as he continued to laugh because oh boy were you in trouble.

God, if you heard one more giggle coming from the other side of the book café, you were going to lose it. You were itching to throw the book in your hand in that direction, in hopes it would shut them up.
Unfortunately you couldn’t afford the damage costs if you did so you restrained yourself, choosing to take a deep breath instead, reminding yourself that there was only a couple more hours left before you could escape this hellhole. Well, it hadn’t always been a hellhole.
Working at the Sun & Moon book café had been like heaven when you first started. It was your dream job to work some place by the college you attended and especially somewhere that dealt with books. It was the best of both worlds since you could sip on a nice warm hot chocolate as you filed Jane Eyre and Northanger Abbey. But ever since he had come, everything had gone downhill.
“Hehe, thank you again~!!” The female customer’s disgustingly sweet voice disrupted the usually quiet place, making you wince. A soft but cheery “no problem!” came from the man who didn’t even bother asking her to to quiet down. The man who was also the sole cause behind this newfound ruckus and who always managed to get on your nerves.
Wong Kunhang or more commonly known as Hendery.
Ever since he had been hired by your manager who was desperate for staff, he had only brought misfortune upon misfortunes. There was no end to all the giggly high school and college age girls that would come in, vying for some sort of attention from him. Your manager, Doyoung, had told you not to complain about it, explaining that all the girls who came in for Hendery contributed to the store’s revenue. Yet you still couldn’t help being irritated by the fairly new worker who always had a bright smile on his face, making him look foolish and naive in your eyes but apparently “cute” to others.
It wasn’t even his smile nor his fangirls that irritated you the most about him. It was the fact that he was adored by everyone even though he was so shitty at his job. How everyone instantly praised and showered him with love when he couldn’t even do the basics of his job correctly like cleaning the equipment.
Perhaps you were also a bit peeved at the fact that when you had first started your job as a barista behind the café counter, your experience had been the complete opposite as you’d only met grumpy or rude customers. No matter how hard you had tried, people had treated you horribly. This was why you had permanently transferred over to the bookkeeping side of the store, feeling more comfortable dealing with silent, bound pages rather than bratty demanding humans.
“Um what was your name?” The flirtatiously high voice pierced your ears once more. You were already imagining the cutesy female lean close to the counter, trying hard to act innocent yet seductive for Hendery.
“How much do you wanna bet he’ll just point to his name tag like a goof and wave her off with his dumb smile?” Your coworker Yangyang, bumped his shoulder with yours, a grin stretched across his face. He was the only one who made work tolerable since the both of you got along really well with your similar taste in humour and hobbies.
You rolled your eyes and scoffed, “Yeah right, like any guy would pass up on a chance with a girl like her.”
You looked over at the café counter where the two were. The girl was drop dead gorgeous and was known around your college campus to be intelligent and extremely talented in makeup. She was one of those girls that no matter what she wore, she always looked stunning, like a model ready for a photoshoot. Hendery would’ve been a fool to turn down her advances.
But you were proven wrong. Hendery did exactly as Yangyang said, pointing to his name tag with a smile except he went above and beyond as he looked over her shoulder to the next customer asking, “How can I help you?”
Your jaw slowly opened in disbelief as you watched the poor girl redden and go over to the waiting area, trying to maintain her composure. As much as you were annoyed by her obnoxious flirting, you still felt bad that Hendery had embarrassed her in front of the people behind her in line.
Yangyang quietly laughed beside you causing you to elbow him aggressively, whispering, “Don’t be a jerk! He just embarrassed her!”
The floppy-haired boy shrugged his shoulders, mischief still in his eyes as he took the book you were struggling to file from your hands and nonchalantly said, “Well, she was the one who was being too pushy besides you know Hendery doesn’t think of things like that, he’s too naive.”
A part of you wanted to agree with him yet ultimately, you still chose to blame Hendery. Even if he was naive, he was far too annoying and goofy to work as a barista. God, you were lucky to have never worked with him so far, you silently thought to yourself as you pushed the book cart to the back. The day you two worked together would definitely be hell.
Tumblr media
“I’m sorry what?”
You looked at your manager, Doyoung, in complete disbelief.
“You’re going to be working behind the counter with Hendery on Christmas Eve.” He repeated casually as he scribbled on the schedule sheet in the staff room you both were in.
Your worst nightmare had just come true. You were going to work alongside Hendery. But not just on any other day, on Christmas freaking Eve. Out of all the days, did it really have to be a day before Christmas? A day of holiday cheer and happiness was now going to be filled with misery as you dealt with Hendery’s messes and mistakes.
“But how? What about the café supervisors?” You asked him, hoping that he had missed a detail like forgetting someone else was available that day to work.  Although you were his subordinate, he had never treated you as such and so you felt comfortable enough to ask him things like this.
“Well, I forgot that Claire asked for the day off and since you’re the only supervisor available that day, you’ll have to make do. Besides, there won't be any book filing tasks to do so it’ll just be the counter. If anyone has a question with the books then you’ll be able to help them anyways.”
You blinked profusely, trying every excuse in the book to get you out of the situation.
“B-but, I haven’t worked behind the counter in so long, I mean can’t I switch shifts with someone else?”
Doyoung snorted, pushing up his glasses as he walked past you with the schedule sheet, tacking it on the bulletin board beside the couches.
“Well good luck finding someone who’ll want to work on Christmas Eve.”
You scowled at the back of the sweater vest clad man, his back facing you as he fixed other posters on the bulletin board like the neat freak he was. Challenge accepted, Kim Doyoung.
Tumblr media
Challenge failed.
Every single person you had messaged in the past couple of days was busy and had plans or was not even in town. Even supervisors from the other Sun & Moon book cafe downtown were unavailable. And since you lived on the college campus nearby, with no other plans, you were the only choice.
You stood outside the place, dread filling you up at the thoughts of how the night might go. The whole night before you’d had trouble falling asleep. Then you’d woken up in the morning only to feel a bit under the weather, only eating a couple crackers with tea before leaving for work. And now here you were, dressed in a christmas tree sweater with reindeer antlers on your head, wishing you could go back to the comforts of your dorm and just sleep through the day.
With a sigh you stepped in, the familiar aromas of coffee and lattes washing over you with a hint of that woody smell from the books.
Okay, you could do this, it was just one night.
It seemed already to be a bit busy as you made your way to the staff room, people sipping on their drinks and the sounds of pages flipping around you. It put a warm smile on your face; well, at least the atmosphere was cozy. Dropping off your things in the staff room, you stared at the red apron hanging on a hook in front of you, the horrible apron that you’d thought you’d never wear again.
But you had to keep a positive mindset. After all, maybe things would look up for you, maybe working with Hendery wouldn’t be so bad.
“Hey (y/n)!” Henry’s chirpy voice broke into your mental preparation, tearing apart any optimistic thoughts you had.
It was Christmas Eve though, the least you could do was put aside your annoyance and be kind to him. So you mustered up a smile and turned to look at him, however, the smile didn’t last for long as you saw what he was wearing.
Hendery wore a cream sweater with jeans, nothing that screamed christmas but with the red barista apron he had on it passed. But it was what was on his head that pissed you off. The boy had come in wearing a white beanie that said “loverboy” in red on the front and had white ears attached making him look like he was wearing a cat hat.
Was he serious? Or maybe this was just temporary, as the dress code strictly said that you couldn’t wear any type of hat inside, unless for religious reasons.
“Um, are you wearing that on the floor?” You pointed to his head, unable to stop the frown from spreading across your face.
He grinned, his teeth showing, making him look all foolish again.
“Yep! I just got it from a friend and I thought why not wear it today? It’s white so it totally goes along with Christmas!”
You closed your eyes, trying not to explode at his obnoxiously happy state and muttered, “Hendery. There is nothing Christmas about it, it’s just a white cat beanie. You do know that we can’t wear hats while working right?”
His smile faltered, apparently he was surprised at your reaction. What? Did he really think you’d like it? He should’ve known what was okay to wear and what was not. Besides, reindeer antlers and santa hats only cost a couple of dollars at the most and many people owned one so he could’ve borrowed from someone.
God, now you were beginning to have a headache.
“Uh, I didn’t know, I mean I uh forgot. Um I can’t take it off yet because I promised my friend I’d be wearing it for him when he dropped by. I mean if that’s cool with you, can I?”
He made that nervous concentrating face that you’d noticed in his first two weeks of working. But it only seemed to irritate you more as you aggressively put on your apron quickly biting out, “It’s fine. At least you’re in Christmas colours.”
The both of you went out, the tension seemingly visible as some people gave you confused looks from how you were basically speed-walking in while scowling.
At the moment you didn’t care about their opinions, your only mission was to do your job and close the store quickly then get out.
And as you got behind the counter you made sure to assign Hendery at the till while you made the drinks so there was less chances of messing orders up. But as around ten to fifteen minutes went by, your headache began to worsen. It got so bad to the point where, you could feel the sweat drip down the side of your face and your stomach was beginning to hurt as well.
Surely, it wasn’t that time of the month for you. The only conclusion could be that it was something you had ate before or maybe you were dehydrated.
But you couldn’t quit now. Instead, you tiredly let Hendery know you were going on a short break, unable to notice the concern on his face as he nodded and somehow made your way to the staff room. You were drained of energy and needed a quick sip of any drink as your eyes fluttered and a slight dizziness took over.
“Thank god for walls.” You mumbled as you leaned against the cool wood, closing your eyes and telling yourself that you just needed to make it to the staff room for an ibuprofen and some water and then you’d be fine.
However, things didn’t go as planned as the world started to spin and soon it all blacked out as you lost your balance and fell to the ground.
Tumblr media
“(y/n)??? (y/n)??” A hand shook your shoulder as you softly groaned, absolutely exhausted. You just wanted to sleep, why couldn’t you ever just get some sleep?
“(y/n) please wake up, please just take some medicine and then you can go back to sleep.” The voice was soft, filled with concern but it was nice, comforting like the soft bed you were laying on; you wanted to hear more of it. So you obliged and opened your eyes slowly, mouth completely dry and lips even drier as you smiled at the figure in front of you.
It was the catboy.
His big eyes that were filled with panic softened in relief as you looked lazily up at him. Now that you thought about it, Hendery was fairly attractive with those big kind eyes, nice face structure and slightly wavy blond hair that went with his cream sweater and beanie. He always dressed nicely whether it was at work or the glimpses you saw of him and his just as wild friends at college.
This definitely had to be a dream, it had to be if you were thinking of Hendery in a positive light.
“Here, let’s get you up.” He whispered, putting his hand on your back and helping you to a sitting position on the bed. The walls were all beige around you and you realized that you were in the medical room at the book café. It was a smart idea by Doyoung that if someone wasn’t feeling well and needed a place for rest before going home or being picked up, that they could rest in there.
“How are you feeling?” Hendery murmured, staring at you with concern. You gave him a tired thumbs up, wincing slightly at the pain that shot through your side. This dream was definitely more realistic than others.
Hendery smiled at you, for some reason causing you to smile at him back. He gave you a glass of water before sitting down in the chair that had been put right beside the bed. God, did water ever taste amazing in a dream.
“Um,” He spoke up, catching you slightly by surprise, “Do you remember what happened?”
Huh? You looked at him confused, what had happened?
Hendery scratched the back of his head, moving his beanie and said in a serious tone, “You fainted by the staff room half an hour ago.”
Fainted???? Your eyes widened at his words. So this wasn't a dream? This was reality?
No wonder you felt so shitty, it was because of the dehydration. You mentally cursed at yourself for your current state. Wait. The café counter, you were supposed to be supervising for the night.
If Hendery was here, then who was out there?
It seemed that Hendery figured out your panicked look as he quickly said, “Don’t worry, I called Doyoung in and he’s covering us right now. When you fainted he called in the college med staff and they just told us you were dehydrated. They left a couple of minutes ago actually saying to wake you up and take the meds they left.”
Hendery seemed nervous as he said all of this, avoiding your eyes.
“I-I’m sorry (y/n).”
You frowned, looking at the distressed boy, nothing like the naively grinning one you were so used to seeing.
“I’m sorry I didn’t do anything to help you when you were looking so tired working and made you stressed out with my stupid beanie.” He angrily took off the cat eared beanie, holding it in his hands grimly.
“It’s-” “It’s not okay.” He cut you off by surprise. Hendery sighed, “It’s Christmas Eve, a day that’s supposed to be filled with happiness and here you are, stuck with someone as dumb as me.”
“You’re not dumb.” You croaked out, taking another sip of the water, hoping that your voice would go back to normal.
“But I am. I know you don’t like working with me, I see it in your face every time we work and I thought that today I could make it up to you, but I couldn’t even see that you weren't feeling well. I should’ve asked, I should’ve just asked you to take a break rather than you going off alone.”
He looked so upset with himself that you couldn’t help but feel guilty for his reaction. Maybe you had been too harsh on the boy, he was just trying his best and maybe it wasn’t too great yet but he still had time to learn. You were in his position once.
“Hendery,” You softly spoke, “It’s not your fault. I was so mean to you for no reason, I’m so sorry. Your beanie is really nice too, I was just not in a good mood, I’m sorry. I also shouldn’t have come in today if I wasn’t feeling well. I just ended up being a huge burden to you and Doyoung.”
Before Hendery could say something, the door opened and in came Doyoung, adorned in a lit up reindeer sweater with a santa hat and looking annoyed. But his hard stance softened when he saw you sitting miserably on the bed.
“Did you take the medicine?” He asked, scrutinizing you and Hendery, crossing his arms like a mom who had caught her child and their partner in the act. You shook your head making him roll his eyes and walk up to you, opening the medicine container all the while mumbling how you all never listened to anyone.
Doyoung then placed the pills in your hand and you swallowed them with the water, hating the horrible sensation that accompanied it as your throat was a pit parched still.
Right after you were done, he collected your cup of water, about to walk away and out the room when he raised his brow at Hendery, “Since she’s feeling better, shouldn’t you be back on till?”
“But she’s-” “I can look over her from here. It’s not busy out right now so you’ll be fine being alone for a couple of minutes.”
The big brown eyed boy looked back and forth between you and his manager, wondering if he should comply or not. Finally, with a sigh he got up and left. As soon as he closed the door, Doyoung pushed his glasses up his nose, turning to face you with an all knowing smile spreading across his face.
“So what’s with you and lover boy?”
You groaned, laying back in the bed, you were never going to hear the end of this from him now.
“Cut it out Doyoung, we were just apologizing to each other because we felt bad. You didn’t miss anything juicy.”
The preppy boy rolled his eyes, sitting on the chair that Hendery had sat on.
“If I hadn’t come in right then, pretty sure y’all would’ve started kissing or hugging each other passionately or something.”
You scoffed at his words. Just because you had thought of Hendery as attractive in that one dazed moment didn’t mean you wanted to make out with him right then and there.
“Doyoung just cause your love life is non existent doesn’t mean you can go start creating things in mine.”
“Oh so Hendery is a part of your love life then?”
You groaned again. Now you had dug yourself a hole with that one. The boy laughed and ran a hand through his hair saying, “I know you’ve been too busy hating on him to know this but the boy cares about you.”
Now it was your turn to laugh and you stared at the beige ceiling above as you replied, “I’m pretty sure any other coworker would’ve called for help if they’d seen their colleague passed out.”
Doyoung shrugged and got up saying, “True but I know your colleagues wouldn’t stay by your side the whole time with serious worry. Well, besides Yangyang but the both of you are good friends so...”
Now you rolled your eyes, “Whatever Dodo.”
He stomped his foot, “Don't call me that! You know I hate it! Besides, I’m still your manager at the moment you know! We are at work!” He frowned like a little kid having a tantrum.
You smiled at him, feeling a bit better from his hilarious antics as he left the room to go help Hendery.
Pretty soon it was close to closing time and Doyoung had already left as he unfortunately had somewhere to be, asking you multiple times if you were alright with it. No matter how much you reassured him he looked at your warily as if you were lying. It got to the point that both you and Hendery had to shove him out the door and threaten to lock it on him.
Now it was just the two of you. Since it was much darker now and the day before Christmas, most people had left and only one or two regulars remained, lounging about and reading. So you began to clean up with Hendery, all the while unable to shake off Doyoung’s words about how Hendery had cared for you.
It was probably just a one time thing. Maybe he was just an extremely sympathetic guy.
“Hey, you don’t have to do this, I can clean up. You can rest if you want.”
Hendery looked at you in the same way as Doyoung had, his cat beanie back on again. He’d only done adorned it once more after you had urged him to, saying that since Christmas was tomorrow it was fine if he bent the rules a little bit. It wasn’t like head office was coming in tonight plus you still felt guilty for being so mean to him.
He glanced your way with concern as you shook your head, “I’m fine now seriously. You don’t have to worry.”
But he kept worrying. Anything you did he’d offer to do for you or would simply take it out of your hands and do it himself. But on the bright side he was improving at cleaning the equipment.
You sighed as he closed the front doors and turned off the lights. Everything had been done and now you were able to go home, to the sweet comforts of your bed, finally.
“Are you all good to go?” You asked Hendery as he zipped up a big puffy red jacket and slung a bag over his shoulder. “Yep!” He smiled in your direction, analyzing you for the millionth time today to check if you were okay. As endearing as it had been at first, now it was a bit too exhausting.
“Okay, time for us to go!” You zipped up your coat as the both of you made your way to the front. You both got out and you locked the doors, checking that everything was okay. But before you could say a goodbye and a merry christmas and leave, Hendery stopped you.
“Wait! Um, I know it isn’t too much but I had a lil something for you.”
He reached into his bag and pulled out a small box that was all wrapped up. “I’m sorry for the shitty wrapping job.” His cheeks reddened as he fidgeted with his hands.
You were taken aback at the kind gesture but also felt bad that you hadn’t even gotten him anything.
“Oh, Hendery! thank you! I’m so sorry I didn’t get you anything.” You said as he handed you the gift quickly saying, “It’s fine! You don't have to get me anything!”
“Um should I open it now or tomorrow?” You were unsure on what was the most appropriate thing to do in a moment like this.
“Totally your choice!” He nervously laughed, hands still fidgeting.
“Right now it is then.” You murmured and began to unwrap the paper away, seeing a jewellery box with a tiny card on top of it.
“Oh um, you can read the card at home cause it’s pretty cold outside you don’t wanna get too cold by standing out for so long.” He blabbed again.
Frankly, you weren’t listening to his words and opened the card anyways, reading the thoughtful message written inside:
To: (y/n)
Thank you for guiding me and helping me even when you’d rather not, I really appreciate it. I hope we can work more shifts together and that we get to see each other often. You have a very kind heart and I hope you know how special you are to each person you meet, especially me. I’m sorry for being so goofy all the time and I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
From: Hendery :)
You smiled at the message before opening up the jewellery box to find a pretty sun charm bracelet.
“Oh this is so cute!” You squealed at the gift. Hendery let out a breath you hadn’t realized that he’d been holding and as you looked up at him, your emotions got the best of you as you enveloped him in a hug, moving side to side with joy. His body was so nice and warm, you totally forgot about the cold surrounding you. But as soon you realized what you had just done, you pulled away quickly.
Slightly out of breath from all the moving, the both of you looked into each other’s eyes in surprise. It was so intimate that you could smell his fresh cologne and see the tiny stitches in his beanie. He looked even more good looking, ethereal up close now that you were more awake. For once, you were the nervous one and felt your palms begin to sweat. You were about to pull away and apologize for the sudden hug when Hendery softly murmured, “You’re so beautiful.”
What? You held your breath, heartbeat pumping as you wondering if what you had just heard was correct or the medication had some side effects. Hendery calling you beautiful? You? The both of you going from enemies to somewhat friends to now attracted to each other?
All of a sudden, he leaned in slowly making you close your eyes, waiting for his soft lips to be on yours. Instead, he kissed your forehead and your cheek whispering, “Merry Christmas Eve (y/n), I’ve been wanting to tell you that since I first started at Sun & Moon.”
You laughed at the way his words sounded.
“You’ve been wanting to tell me Merry Christmas Eve since you started?” You poked fun at him, honestly just wanting to hear him call you beautiful once more.
Hendery grinned as he said, “Yes, exactly.”
He laughed before hugging you tightly again and the two of you stayed in each other’s embrace for a while, simply enjoying the moment.
Once you pulled away, a smile gracing the both of your faces, you wondered what was going to happen now.
He cleared his throat, probably thinking the same thing as he puled away rom you and looked to the side asking, “I know this isn’t an ideal first date, I mea it could be a hangout if you want it to be, but do you wanna come back to my dorm for some dinner? My roommates are all outta town and same with the res monitor.” Hendery shyly asked, those big eyes slightly pleading you, making it hard to say no.
“I would like that.” You said before leaning and kissing him on the cheek, tempted by the clear, soft-looking skin.
What had first started as a horrible Christmas Eve was now going to end as the best Christmas Eve and an even better Christmas alongside Hendery.

hiiiiiii. i was wondering if u could assign your moots as fanfics or tropes? love your works !
omg yes! i think my inbox has been acting up lately but i’m so glad this one came through! also to my moots: if i didn’t get you, it probably means i don’t know you all that well, feel free to hit up my dms and let’s talkkk <33
long asf so under the cut it goes!
@seeing-dreams: lori babe, something about you talking about marrying your hubby 💍 chenle all the time, so much so that the only thing i can think of is: a three-day school trip to some ski resort, and you are forced to sit on the bus with him because your best friend ditched you for her own manz which led to a slight e2l at first, but then you guys bond on the lifty things (tf are they called, like the things that take you up the mountains 🚠) and then boom, magic happens, y’all are engaged.
@orange-nimon-cross: straight up got confused for a sec bc i kept tryna type @/yunha, but here goes: you probably think imma say angst, but nahh, we going ✈️ soft hours. i’m thinking a bsf2l w sicheng, like a high school au where you guys have liked each other for forever but neither of you are willing to admit it until hmm, let’s say he’s asked to prom by someone else and (duN, dUN, DUN) he says yes because he thinks you’ll never like him back...so thus ensues a long, agonizing, period where you stop talking and (this is turning into an angst), and then finally at prom, in like the most dramatic and prolonged way, you lay your feelings straight to him and everyone’s like ö and then you’re crying bc you think it’s a mistake, oh no i’ve ruined everything, omg wtf is wrong w me, and then he kisses you :)
@moonbeamsung: hannah, so here’s the thing. i’m writing it right now. UGH. i was gonna keep this a secret until i decided to release it for sure but ‘chocolate milk’ (the renjun x reader that was supposed to be released over the past break but lol no) is for you! inspired by a bio of yours that i saw on some network where you said you wanted to live in a childhood friends to lovers au, and i manifested it, i really did, but i have no release date as of now HAHA ily.
@lebrookestore: BROOKE, YOU ALREADY KNOW, taeyong angst. i’m also writing it right now so i’m unable to give too much detail but you literally already know (since you requested it LMAO). uhh, let’s see what i can say for now: college au (someone stop me from writing college aus from here on forward), uhh ex!taeyong, uhh vodka in milk 🥛. teaser comes out this week, it’s angsty to the max (but fluff ending!)
@moonlightjeno: luna! my hands are itching to type ‘streetracer jeno au’ but i’m trying to not say something so gosh darn obvious. OMG I GOT IT. we were discussing this the other day hehe -- fantasy au (wink wonk) OMG (ok this doesn’t necessarily count as fantasy bc i’m not bouta world build in this one ask but) werewolf!jeno -- consider me dead 💀consider me deceased ⚰️, consider me to have never been birthed in the first place ❌🤰. this reminds me of this exo bbh fanfic, i read like fifteen times a long while ago, called ‘psych’ (i think the acc has deactivated since) but similarly...you’re broke and you’ll take any rental listing within a twenty minute walk to your college (college au again, when can i stop with these) and you move into the one listing that fit your budget -- but you have to room with (a very hot) roommate!jeno and all the neighbors are already telling you about his “anger issues” and how he likes to smash things around all the damn time. you find out soon enough, one horrifying night, when you walk into his room (door accidentally unlocked) to give him his idk...mail...and right before your eyes he’s shifting (full moon’s out 🌕 and all that) and in the midst, he’s like yelling at you to leave and you do, but then the next time you force him to let you stay with him and over time, he learns to control and you guys fall in love yada, yada, yada. (i really went off didn’t i? oh dear, ignore me).
@danishmiilk: xingyi, hello 👋 , it is i, ree, who you never talk to. but hear me out, babe...coffee shop au...manager!doyoung x customer!reader...in which you complain *once* about how rude the cashier (haechan) was for commenting that your order (a perfectly normal hot chocolate with extra whip cream and sprinkles) was for kiDs oNLy. mans was dragged from his office in the back and, surprisingly unsurprisingly, y’all hit it off right away -- it took only *once* for him to ask you out on a date, rendering cashier!haechan speechless and your world upturned....HAHA. negl, this plot slaps.
@jaeminzie: cel babe, this one literally radiates your energy, i am 👏 not 👏 even 👏 joking. first off, childhood au (i sense another recurring theme...oh no), you and bestfriend!jaemin (ahh, the bsf2l trope that i can never escape) have been going to the same summer camp since the two of you were little kids. as soon as you’re old enough to be camp counselors well, that’s exactly what happens. except, that’s also exactly what causes your first fight, a silly, stupid fight over who could win best camp counselor of the summer by vote of the kids. think baking competition, skipping stones at the lake, fort making, folding paper planes, anything. (yes, i have succumbed to my other overused trope: e2l). and then...an angry, filled with pent up frustrations, pillow fight that has you toppling all over him and *accidentally* brushing your lips to his nose---the rest is self-explanatory.
__________
phew, that’s all i can do. i have exhausted all my brainpower and perhaps an hour of my time. i bolded the important stuff because i know it’s a lot, i’m a lot, i’m very extra. i also might be using some of these because sometimes...idk man...sometimes i’m an absolute genius. thank you to the terribly endearing anon that asked for this, you are loved (by me! hehe)

just because it was easy and relaxing organising and restacking the books
but soon you wished you took the earlier shifts
because of dong sicheng
not to be dramatic but
your long rival
he started coming to the library to borrow books
because that’s kind of the point of a library
but he ended up liking the environment for studying
and would stay there for hours just to study
and you’d admire his hardworking nature
if he left on time, that is
you would do the rounds ten minutes before closing
just to tell everyone like
‘hey, we’ll be closing in around ten minutes if you want to begin packing up’
but this bitch
would nEVER PACK UP ON TIME
you’d end up standing at his table with your bag and the keys in your hand
tapping on the wood to try and get his attention
and him slowly packing up afterwards
even tho he kNOWS you want to go home
‘you’re just as slow as you were in kindergarten hey?’
and he’d be so furious
‘you know you cheated’
‘I don’t remember any such thing’
and maybe you did maybe you didn’t
you were like four years old
as if you’d remember a race you won when you were that age
he just rolls his eyes and leaves as you lock the doors
you leave in the other direction
happily leaving him behind
but he stops by every Monday Tuesday and Thursday night to study
which are the days you work as well
he acts like it’s just part of his schedule
but he worked out if he came in on Wednesday’s he didn’t have the opportunity to annoy you
and honestly?
annoying you at the end of your shift and after a long session of studying was the highlight of his night
but he keeps borrowing books
and you’re like
whatever
until he borrows this new book you’ve been wanting to read for ages
and you were low-key so bitter
this lil bitch has no way of knowing you wanted that book but somehow he does and that’s the only reason he’s borrowed it
even though,, he literally had no idea lmao
tbh u probably would have wanted to talk to him about the books he reads bc u have very similar taste
okay the same taste
but he’s such an asshole ur like nah fam
anyways he returns it after a week
boy reads fast ok
and when he goes to drop it in the returns box
you just take it from his hand and scan it under your name straight away
and put it under the desk so no one else can borrow it
and when there’s a lull in the work at the library
you reach under the table for the book and rifle through it
and you notice a few pencil marks
and upon further inspection you realise they’re comments referencing certain parts of the book
and you do nOT stand for vandalism
but some of them are fuckin hilarious not gonna lie
on the page you just happened to open
you can see there’s a comment beside a passage of text depicting a fight scene
‘this would kill someone wtf’
and u laugh and wonder who had done this
like the book had only been out for a little while
and u finish it in just less than a week
bc u read a lot during your shifts
probably a lot more than you should tbh
and seriously the comments made the book better
you hadn’t laughed so hard at random commentary so much
like the words were exactly what you were thinking
you couldnt help it
while ur putting some of the books back in the middle of your shift
!!!! you see another book that u might like !!!
not to judge a book by its cover butttttttt
it looks like ur type oop-
and after flipping through it
to get an idea of font size and chapter length cause ur a whole nerd like that
u see it ALSO has pencil markings
in the borders and underlining sentences
and without even thinking u borrow it
just to read the funny comments again
and ur boss comes up to you during your shift and is like
‘have you seen someone’s been writing in the books? look at this’
and thrusts a book in ur face
and ur like ??????? okay chill I’ll look
and u read the writing she’s pointing at
the familiar loopy handwriting adorning the page
and it says ‘I hope she throws her drink in his face’
when u read the paragraph for context
u realise it’s a confession scene
a few lines down the mystery person has written ‘called it.’
and u can’t help but laugh
like come on that was funny
but ur boss doesn’t agree
she just asks you to find out who’s doing it so they can be suspended from the library
or charged with vandalism
or something
she wants vengeance
u roll ur eyes and go to one of the staff computers
scrolling through the lists of borrowers for that specific book
and it’s a fuckin library that book has been borrowed a loT
2031 times ???????????????
you almost fall of your chair tbh
then someone clears their throat in front of u
and u immediately apologise as u try and get the right tab up to process the borrower’s book
but once u look at the person in front of u
you wish you hadn’t been so nice
sicheng stands in front of you
a grin on his face as he hands you another book
smug bitch is so happy he startled u
‘looking at porn on the library computer, yn?’
u laugh
‘I’m not u in 8th grade’
he glares at you as he takes his book and goes back to his desk to continue studying
u were soooo hoping he’d leave
even tho u kinda enjoyed looking at him
like dude was hot okay
what were u supposed to do????
ur actual job????
please.
so he stays
and when it’s ten minutes til closing
u go and let everyone know
and u stop at sichengs table
and he’s writing out notes or something
idk it’s not like u care anyway lol
but he’s lowkey frustrated bc he keeps messing up this one goddamn formula
so he erases it
and that’s when u catch a glimpse of his handwriting
and bruh am I high or is that the exact same handwriting as in the books
I mean he has borrowed a few of the books
and he’s into that genre
not that you've checked out his borrowed list or anything
basically ur having this whole conversation with yourself in your head
bc ur cool like that
and he’s like ????? why this bitch standing over my shoulder and watching me write out this equation
until he’s like ‘what are u doing’
and ur like !!!!! oh hi !!! sorry I was busy listening to the voices in my head lmao xD
jk jk
‘have u been writing in the books’
and suddenly he’s super shy
and he has this massive grin
and he’s like ‘no’
bitch we know it was u stfu
u roll ur eyes and ur like ‘its not funny my boss wants you to be suspended’
he squints at you
‘how do you even know it was me’
and then:
‘DO YOU HAVE E V I D E N C E’
and u cross your arms
like a badass bitch
and ur like ‘I have plenty of evidence actually’
‘for one, youve borrowed all the books that have been found with writing’
‘and your handwriting matches’
subconsciously he covers his notebook with his arm to hide his handwriting
and he's like ‘why are u telling me this’
you're taken aback by the question tbh
like ?????? to be a good person ??????
idk u fuckwit just wanted to warn you
‘thought you'd want to know’
and he just turns back to his book
and you shrug and walk away like ok get suspended then see if I care
but u do :((
but as you walk away hes like
‘wait’
‘Im gonna be suspended??’
and u nod like ye that's what I just said but ok
‘like I cant borrow or I cant come in at all?’
u don't know tbh
‘both I think?’
and suddenly there's panic in his eyes
another person walks past u and thanks u
and u mindlessly tell them to have a good night as they leave
everyone has left
except sicheng of course
that beautiful son of a-
wait why did u say beautiful
‘what can I do to nOT get suspended??’
and u shrug bc idk dude not my problem
but then u think about it
‘I mean if u get rid of the evidence theres no way u can be suspended, right?’
and he seems so happy at the thought
‘would you help me? please?’
and ur sooooooo skeptical
‘depends. what do u want to me to do?’
‘I mean I need access to the books so’
‘yeah ill let u in and out’
‘I can't exactly just erase the markings when people could be watching’
and that's exactly how you end up sitting in the library with dong sicheng at 11pm at night rifling through books to find odd pencil markings to erase
it wasnt that hard
u just got his record up
*snorts* ‘you borrowed ‘how to talk to girls’ when we were thirteen’
and he just rolled his eyes and marched to the computer like ‘you can see my record I deserve to see yours’
and ur like NOOOOOO nononononono
but later
‘you've read all the light-fighter novels??’
he looks at you from where hes searching for one of the books on the list, an eyebrow raised
‘yeah why’
‘dude,, I loved those books’
and he smiles a little
‘thats where I started marking the books tbh, every time I read it id add a little cross in the corner of the cover bc I read it so often’
part of u is a little impressed
the other is annoyed at how similar your taste in books is
but the first part keeps asking why u hate him so much
other than the staying late and the snarky comments
which you actually find kinda funny-
anyways
once you've gathered up a few of the books
like at least ten each
you sit on the floor of the childrens section
beanbags sprawled out beneath you as u read through some of the books
most of them you've read before
and every time you giggle at something hes written his smile gets a little bigger
but of course youre looking at the book so you dont notice
and he keeps his head down
‘is it bad that im hungry’
you lift your head from the book to look at sicheng
hes not even reading anymore hes just lounging back on the beanbags
and maybe he'd been watching u read
watching as the smile on your face grew wider at his commentary
‘I didnt see you leave tonight. have u eaten?’
you furrow your brows in thought, trying to recall having seen him leave
‘you been watching me, y/n?’
‘have you been eating, sicheng?’
and there's something about the way you say his name that makes his heart jump
his voice is soft as he looks at you in the dark
‘no’
you focus back on the book in front of you
‘finish whatever book youre on and we’ll call it a night’
‘what, you wanna go eat?’
you cant tell if hes just surprised or if hes hopeful
or something else
‘no but I do want to sleep’
you laugh and he forces a laugh too
you dont notice the difference
when you've returned all the books
he meets you at the front door as you grab the book you'd been reading that shift
hes just standing by the door on his phone
and maybe its bc ur tired or maybe its just him
but u cant help thinking
Jesus Christ this boy is attractive
and okay maybe u had a crush on him a few years ago
but hey! you were eleven what could u do
the crush still lasted like two years tho lmao
but u shoulder your bag and open the door for him
making sure to lock it carefully
and he walks with you in the direction of your apartment
and ur like oh u live this way too?
and hes like nah
but what kind of boy would he be if he didnt accompany home
like christ y/n u could be h u r t out here at this time of night
but you just smile at him bc wow thats ??? actually ??? kinda sweet
‘who are u and what have u done with dong sicheng’
and there goes his heart again
he just nudges u with his elbow
and u laugh at him and continue on ur way
when u get to ur building he thanks u for ur help in the most polite way possible
and u can kind of see that hes actually rlly nice ??? how ???
but hes back at the library the next day
and of course he comes up to the counter as soon as he spots you
sneaking around a few desks so u dont hear him come up behind you to whisper ‘BOO!’ in your ear
you jump like three feet in the air and spin around to tell him to get out from behind the desk
‘I dont see a nametag on u that means u have to be on THAT side of the desk thank u very much’
‘didnt realise your name tag said bitch on it geeeez y/n ://’
and u just fix him with a glare once hes finally on the right side
‘are u borrowing a book or not’
‘nuP’
he leans on the desk
his eyes staring straight into yours
‘just wanted to ask if u were able to stay back tonight’
you roll ur eyes
you'd barely gotten any sleep last night
but the look of concern on his face when he realises youre hesitating makes you nod
‘of course,, wouldnt want my least favourite person to get kicked out’
‘I always knew you had a soft spot for me’
you roll ur eyes aGAiN
‘go bother someone else’
‘oh is the hot librarian in?’
you push him away from the desk
but he doesnt miss the faint smile on ur lips
‘sicheng dont make me give you $100 in overdue book fees’
he sticks his hands up at the threat, his eyes wide
‘no. please. ill do anything’
when u raise an eyebrow at him, he just grabs the book you'd been reading (and not yet borrowed) and walks away
and he winks too
u have to stop your heart from beating out of its chest
and later
its 8pm and the library is officially closing
and for the past three hours you'd been walking to sicheng’s desk and subtly been trying to steal your book back
but every single time hes seen you coming
and pulled the book under the desk or into his lap
away from your grabbing hands
every. single. time.
you tap your foot impatiently at him when its time to continue ur undercover project
and he smiles down at his notebook when he hears u huff in annoyance at him
he dramatically looks up at you
‘do you need something?!’
‘do you want to get suspended?!’
he narrows his eyes at you but stands up anyway
he carefully puts his things in his bag and takes the list of books from your hands
a few of them are already crossed out as having been checked and erased
but theres still a lot to go
it takes you almost three weeks to finally get to the last day
and it had been the same thing every time;
sicheng took forever to pack up
you'd eventually find about ten books each
sit in the children’s section
laugh and chat about your lives while you went through the books
tease each other
and when you'd finished,
he'd walk you home
every single time
without fail
it became a habit that on the Tuesdays he'd stop by on his way to his morning class to drop coffee off for you
because he'd kept you up the night before
and it became easy to lose track of time with sicheng
he was just so engaging
there was no part of you that felt bored or uncomfortable with him
yeah he was annoying and infuriating
but his good book taste made up for it
and his annotations in the margins of the books too
‘is this the last of them?’
he squints down at the page again, counting the books on the table again
its the third time hes counted
‘surely ive read more than this’
‘not from this library ://’
you blow your hair out from your face and look down at the pile
‘you know, I think my manager is starting to get really suspicious of me’
‘why’ he looks up briefly from his book to read your face
but you try and remain calm
‘well she only told me about the markings right. and now theyre disappearing’
he looks at you like ?????
‘well she knows ive been closing up late... I think she thinks I did it’
he laughs ‘you? has she met you?’
you pout and throw a pillow at him
‘HEY! what's that supposed to mean :((’
‘it means ive never met someone who's so protective over books as you’
you think about it, chewing ur bottom lip
‘lets just finish this’
‘do u want to get food after’
he surprises you with the sudden question
and the slight nervousness thats evident on his face really makes you want to say yes
but you have a class tomorrow
and you always try and finish up here earlier on a Thursday night
‘cant :((’
he nods and goes back to readng
theres silence for a while
but you find it comfortable
sicheng on the other hand, feels as though hes just been shot down
like
you just turned down his date
you've kinda noticed hes more reserved now
quiet
but rlly hes just kind of embarrassed
until u say something that gives him hope
‘I,, uh, I dont have plans tomorrow night’
and ngl boy is stunned
‘just if u wanted to go see a movie or something idk’
now its ur turn to be embarrassed
u hope ur hair is hiding ur face as u look back down at the book in ur lap bc no doubt ur blushing
but sicheng is just staring at you
and
before even saying anything
he leans over the gap between you
with all the books
and hovers in front of your face
ur so shocked and ur heart is beating way too hard and fast and ur breathing is too quick to be normal are you having an attack I dont know-
and then he leans forward a little bit more
and his lips meet yours
and suddenly its like a fireworks display went off inside you
and then its almost midnight on a Thursday night and ur sitting in the children's section of your workplace in the beanbags with sicheng cupping ur face and kissing you
he just really needed to kiss you
like more than he needed air
and when u finally pull back
he loves how breathless you are
how you have to fight to keep the smile off your face
how you stare at him with wide eyes
‘so its a date then?’
you blush even redder
and nod
‘ye its a date :))’
but for the next fifteen minutes you sit in stunned silence together
small smiles playing on your faces
until u look at your watch and ur like
‘shit sicheng I have to go’
and his eyes widen bc holy crap u were supposed to leave like half an hour ago
so u both sprint around the library trying to put all the books back
and he meets you at the door again after you've grabbed the keys and made sure everything that needed to be locked was,,, u know,, locked
and when ur walkign to the door again
hes on his phone
u cant see but hes texting his friends about what happened lmao what a softie
and when u walk out together
without thinking he grabs your hand
and u walk home
hand in hand
after midnight
he clears his throat
‘so uh,, when actually is our date’
‘my last class ends at 5-’
‘so 5 it is’
‘are u sure??’
he nods happily
and he presses a gentle kiss to ur forehead when u get to ur doorstep
‘ill see u tomorrow’
but the next day
when u come out of your last class
a little giddy
a little too excited
and see him leaning against one of the stone pillars
effortlessly handsome
you feel your heart flip
and maybe ur just tired or maybe its him
but hes really attractive
like really really attractive
its actually just that youre in love with him
he doesnt see you coming
too focused on something on his phone
but he definitely sees you when you push his hand out to the side and step onto ur toes to kiss him
and u can feel him smile a little as he kisses you back
‘ready for that date?’
‘yeah, where are we going’
‘so I was thinking we could go to the libra- HEY! dont hit me I was j o k i n g y/n jesus christ’
