2) what work of yours, if any, are you the most embarrassed about existing?
I’m not embarrassed about it existing, but Nice Guys Finish Last is rough as a bear’s arse and still manages to amass kudos like a motherfucker. That said, it’s now been overtaken by the only fic with a premise that still makes my skin crawl, From Despair to Where. People be nasty. 😂
11) what aspect of your writing do you think has most improved since you started writing?
Well, technically all of it. I knew jack and shit when I started. But, if we’re looking at specifics, I’ve come a long way with regards to unpacking the old thought, or at the very least, I try, lol.
16) are there any characters who haunt you?
Matthew “Rickety Cricket” Mara has not left my stream of consciousness since Blasphemy, and honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
17) if you could give your fledgling author self any advice, what would it be?
It sounds trite but I’d say, “Elaine, my dude, write for you. Even if it’s the rarest of rarepairs, even if it’s Rickety Cricket banging a sex doll in the eye socket, you’ll have a lot more fun if you’re the only person riding the swing in that particular playground."
I wasted a lot of energy getting angry at the Gotham fandom when it grew exponentially overnight because it felt like everything we’d worked towards had been set on fire. And while that did lead to a lot of pushback darkfic (and holy sweet goddamn, was that fun), it was ultimately futile, and it just wasn’t worth getting pissed about. Also, I’d like to think I’ve mellowed over time.
Ultimately: Don’t waste time on universes with no place for you anymore. Create your own. :)
21) what do you think when you read over your older work?
A couple of years ago I reread Checkmate just to see whether or not I hated it. And, glaring squiffy tenses, pov-hopping and epithets aside, I didn’t actually hate it at all. The story really isn’t half bad, it’s just technically rough as all fuck.
