Nolina texana
Nolina lends its name to the family Nolinaceae (sometimes treated as the subfamily Nolinoideae within the Asparagus Family), and this group is concentrated in the southern United States and in Mexico. Like its relatives, Nolina texana has separate male and female plants bearing thousands of tiny flowers that attract bees. As can be seen from the yellow pollen visible in the lower photo, ours is a male. The buds are purple-tinged, while the open flowers are white. Some species of Nolina have a trunk, but this is one of those that do not have one, and such trunkless species are sometimes called "bear grass". This common name is also used for other unrelated plants, and in any case it is not a grass at all. The plant's name refers to its occurrence in Texas, but it is also found in surrounding states and in northern Mexico.

New Releases Week of July 17, 2023
What a week! There are so many books to get excited about this Tuesday.
Just a Hat by Shanah Khubiar Blackstone Publishing
It’s 1979, and thirteen-year-old Joseph Nissan can’t help but notice that small-town Texas has something in common with Revolution-era Iran: an absence of fellow Jews. And in such a small town it seems obvious that a brown kid like him was bound to make friends with Latinos–which is a plus, since his new buds, the Ybarra twins, have his back. But when the Iran hostage crisis, two neighborhood bullies, and the local reverend’s beautiful daughter put him in all sorts of danger, Joseph must find new ways to cope at home and at school.
As he struggles to trust others and stay true to himself, a fiercely guarded family secret keeps his father at a distance, and even his piano teacher, Miss Eleanor–who is like a grandmother to him–can’t always protect him. But Joseph is not alone, and with a little help from his friends he finds the courage to confront his fears and discovers he can inspire others to find their courage, too.

I’m Not Here to Make Friends by Andrew Yang
Terrace House meets Loveboat, Taipei in this fun, frothy, incisive YA debut, following two teens and their unforgettable summer on a reality show.
When Sabine Zhang is picked for Hotel California, a teen reality show with an all-Asian cast, she jumps at the opportunity. As one of few Asians at her high school in the Midwest, she’s always felt as if she was playing a side character in someone else’s story. But on this show, she’ll finally have a chance to step into the spotlight.
All Yoona Bae wants is to get away. The girls at church think she’s mean, her mom thinks she’s a troublemaker, and she’s tired of fighting against her unearned bad reputation. So when she’s invited to appear on Hotel California, Yoona sees it as an opportunity to chill out, make some friends, maybe even get a tan.
But life on the show isn’t all sunshine and self-actualization. The producers want drama at all costs, even if it means pitting Sabine and Yoona against each other. With the season finale looming, can the girls figure out a peaceful way forward, before they lose control of their own narratives?
Frontera by Julio Anta, Jacoby Salcedo (Illustrator)
Mateo makes the dangerous journey back home to the United States through the Sonoran Desert with the help of a new friend, a ghost named Guillermo in a supernatural borderland odyssey by debut graphic novelists Julio Anta and Jacoby Salcedo. As long as he remembers to stay smart and keep his eyes open, Mateo knows that he can survive the trek across the Sonoran Desert that will take him from Mexico to the United States.
That is until he’s caught by the Border Patrol only moments after sneaking across the fence in the dead of night. Escaping their clutches comes at a price and, lost in the desert without a guide or water, Mateo is ill-prepared for the unforgiving heat that is sure to arrive come sunrise. With the odds stacked against him, his one chance at survival may be putting his trust in something, or rather someone, that he isn’t even sure exists. If you’d asked him if ghosts were real before he found himself face-to-face with one, Mateo wouldn’t have even considered it.
But now, confronted with the nearly undeniable presence of Guillermo, he’s having second thoughts. Having spent his afterlife guiding migrants to safety, Guillermo knows things about the Sonoran Desert far beyond what could be explained by a mere hallucination. But even as Mateo forms an uneasy partnership with Guillermo, survival is still uncertain. The Sonoran Desert, with its hostile temperatures and inhabitants, is teeming with danger as the Border Patrol and rogue militias prowl its deadly terrain. As his journey stretches on, Mateo will have to decide exactly what and who he’s willing to sacrifice to find home.

all the time in the world
1289 words | rated T | destiel anniversary fluff
summary:
In the aftermath of the events of one working part, Dean and Cas take a road trip. Neither of them really wants it to end. And they realize it doesn't really have to.
It's been 15 years, and about time they got to celebrate! This is technically coda fic for one working part, but you don't need to read that to enjoy this little snippet of fluff.
read it on ao3, or below the cut
The morning after Cas came back, Dean just drove. The reality of their new lives had really begun to sink in. As they headed toward the bunker, after stopping for lunch at a Kansas City style barbecue place, Dean decided to use their self-appointed time off to introduce Cas to the wide variety of barbecue the vast and varied United States had to offer.
“It won’t take long to detour to Memphis,” Dean had said while they were still at the table. “Beale Street, home of the blues and pork ribs. You’ll love it.”
“But we just ate barbecue, Dean,” Cas replied. “Is it really necessary to drive across three states for more? Isn’t this sufficient?”
Dean looked at Cas in horror for a second, and then shook his head slowly. “See, this is why we need a barbecue road trip. Gotta train up those new human taste buds. I can’t have you spending the rest of your life thinking all barbecue is the same.”
Cas had reluctantly accepted that. Mostly he was just glad to be with Dean, no matter what they were doing. And the idea of a long road trip just for fun, not running into danger or looking for things to hunt or fighting against cosmic forces sounded pleasant, regardless of what they were doing. He also admitted that first barbecue dinner had been delicious, and he wouldn’t mind having it again. He looked across the table at Dean, and smiled.
“Thank you, Dean. Of course I’m happy to go wherever you’d like to take me.”
Dean had gone all pink and flustered across the table at that, and that was also something Cas didn’t mind in the least. In a matter of days he’d gone from firmly believing that he could never have what he truly wanted to being given more than he’d ever even dared to hope for. Not just Dean, but an end to the constant struggle to stay ahead of the forces intent on destroying the universe. For the first time in his long existence, he had time. Time to explore and enjoy the creation he’d stood above for eons, to partake of its wonders instead of invisibly standing guard over them. And Dean was eager and overjoyed to share it all with him.
After Memphis, Dean insisted they needed to head to North Carolina. They swung down through Louisiana and into Texas toward the end of the week. Over brisket while a local band played outside a brewery in the hill country outside Austin, Dean sat staring off into the distance at another group of people smiling and laughing together.
“Is something wrong, Dean?” Cas asked after a few minutes. “You’re not finishing your lunch.”
Dean shook himself off and gave Cas a warm smile. “I was just thinking we should probably be heading home soon.”
Cas nodded at this. “Yes. This has been fun and enlightening, but Sam might be starting to worry about us.”
Dean laughed. “Maybe. But I’m also thinking some of your returned souls might start showing up. Don’t wanna leave the homestead all locked up if anyone needs a refuge, you know?”
“Possibly,” Cas replied.
They’d already heard from Rowena and Crowley, who’d both eagerly taken the deal Cas's spell had offered them. Dean had been worried the two of them would just end up killing each other again, but apparently they’d instead decided to go into business together. So far he’d been reluctant to discover exactly what sort of business the two of them would concoct together, but at least he wasn’t worried about having to clean up another messy murder scene at Rowena’s place. He didn’t necessarily expect to hear from anyone else, but everyone who might reach out already knew where they lived. As long as Sam was there, at least they’d find a warm welcome. Something else was bothering Dean.
“Are you already bored of traveling with me?” he joked, hoping to lighten Dean’s mood.
“What? Never!” Dean insisted, reaching across the table to rest a hand on Cas’s. He stared down at their impulsively joined hands and slowly looked up to Cas’s warm smile with one of his own. “It’s just… it’s almost our anniversary, you know? The day we met, the day you pulled me outta Hell. Kinda feels like we should do something special.”
Cas frowned at that. “Anniversary? I never really thought about it like that before.”
“Yeah, well there’s always been a lot of other shit going on. Even after I started liking you enough to stop thinking of it as the day I had to dig myself out of my own grave and started thinking of it as the day we met, there was never really much time to stop and grab a Hallmark card about it. I just figured, we got time for celebrating stuff like that now.”
“That sounds lovely, Dean,” Cas replied, grateful to know that nothing was truly bothering Dean. He wasn’t actually upset about anything, but he still looked as confused as Cas felt. “What do people even do to celebrate that sort of thing?”
“What,” Dean replied absently. “Rescuing some dude from Hell? I don’t think a lot of other people got that sort of anniversary to celebrate.”
Cas grinned. “That’s true, but people celebrate many similar annual events.”
Dean finished off his brisket and then stood up with Cas to walk back to the car. They weren’t in a hurry, but they were ready to move on again. As they headed out on the road, Dean gave Cas a considering look.
“We could take another road trip. There’s a lot of other important human knowledge we gotta explore.”
Cas considered that for a moment, and then remembered where he’d first met Dean face to face. It seemed as logical a destination as any for an anniversary road trip.
“We could go to Pontiac, Illinois. The barn where you met me is still standing. Or was, a few months ago when I last checked on it.”
Dean turned to look at him so fast the car jolted to the side before he managed to correct it. “Dude, you checked on it?”
Cas gave a little shrug, wondering if maybe he’d overstepped some sort of boundary he hadn’t known existed. Maybe he needed to justify his actions to Dean.
“I used to visit there frequently. When I could still fly, it was a safe sanctuary. You warded it very well against almost everything other than angels. And after I fell and became human, I added more warding. It’s hidden from almost everyone and everything else, except for us. I made sure that you’d always be able to find it again, too. If you ever felt the need for a sanctuary.”
“What?” Dean asked, genuinely surprised by all of this. “You turned the place I stabbed you in the heart into a safe space?”
Cas shrugged. “It seemed metaphorically appropriate at the time.”
Dean reached across the seat and took his hand, squeezing it tight. He was clearly overcome with emotions that Cas was just beginning to understand. He squeezed back and smiled as Dean took a few deep breaths, intently focused on the road. Eventually, Dean cleared his throat, and then smiled at him.
“You know, we did the barbecue tour. We should probably do a pizza tour. Chicago’s not far from Pontiac, and you gotta try a deep dish.”
Cas smiled back, relieved, and let Dean deflect his feelings for the time being. They’d have plenty of time to talk through all their emotions. He could let Dean plan it all for the future for now.
“That sounds wonderful, Dean,” he replied. Because they had time for everything now.

National Pecan Day
On April 14, we celebrate National Pecan Day, pecan — a uniquely American nut whose fan base counts the likes of founding fathers such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Whether it’s a garnish on a salad or a stand-alone snack, caramelized or roasted, sweet or savory — pecans never fail to deliver on the enthralling taste and the ultimate nutrient density. Did you know, America is credited for 75% of the world’s total pecan production? This fun holiday was established by the National Pecan Shellers Association in 1966 to recognize and honor the workforce behind the cultivation of pecans in America.
History of National Pecan Day
On National Pecan Day, America celebrates the only nut native to its land. Pecans are a much-celebrated nut of America, used in deserts, icecreams, and snacks.
Centuries before European colonization, pecans were cultivated, processed, and consumed in America by Native people. The word ‘pecan’ is derived from the word ‘pacane,’ used by the Algonquin tribe to describe a nut that needs a stone to crack open. The tribes valued pecan for its nutrition density, availability, ease of consumption, and fulfilling taste.
In the late 17th century, the native nut caught the eye of Spanish colonists, who began cultivating large pecan orchards in the vicinity. But it wasn’t until the 18th century that the commercialization of pecans picked up the pace in the United States. By 1802, formal selling routes were established, and pecan export had commenced.
In 1882, a hybrid fruit via the budding of pecan and an adjacent wild plant was created by Abner Landrum, a cultivator from South Carolina. This resultant nut was considered to be an upgraded version of pecan. Although the hybrid seeds of Abner got lost in time, in 1876, the process of grafting was recreated by Antoine, a slave from Louisiana. Antoine presented his discovery at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1976 and thus began farming a new and improved variety of pecans throughout the country.
Today, America is responsible for three quarters of pecan production in the world. From the summer lanes of Texas to the sunny pavements of California, pecan cultivation is a year-long endeavor for thousands of American farmworkers.
In 1996, the National Pecan Shellers Association members came together to establish April 14 as National Pecan Day. The objective of the day is to celebrate the earthly wonders of this nut and to uplift the hardworking members of the industry who make the sustainable farming of pecans possible.
National Pecan Day timeline
1772 The First Plantation
Long Island farmers organize the first pecan plantation of pecan trees, propagating safe and easy ways of pecan plantation.
1775 George Washington’s Imprint
Founding Father George Washington plants a pecan tree in Mount Vernon, symbolizing the rapid popularity of pecans in America.
1943 Formalization
National Pecan Shellers Association is established to represent thousands of pecan farmers and shellers across the country
1996 Establishment of the Day
The National Pecan Shellers Association establishes National Pecan Day to honor the native nut of America.
National Pecan Day FAQs
How is 'pecan' pronounced?
The correct pronunciation of pecan is PEE-can. However, a majority of southern Americans like to say it as PA-kawn. How do you pronounce it?
Are pecan and walnut the same thing?
It’s easy to get confused, but walnuts and pecans are two different nuts from the same Junlandacea family. Walnut has a smooth exterior with a lighter color, unlike pecans, which have a chocolate brown color with definitive lines.
Can you eat pecan raw?
Yes! Pecans, like all other nuts, are edible in their raw form. You can carry a couple of these shelled nuts in your pocket to munch through the day, or you can scatter them on your salad for that extra crunch.
National Pecan Day Activities
Plan a pecan day
Host a bake off
Plant a pecan tree in your backyard
Indulge in the versatile offering of this great American nut by planning your menu around it. Start the day with fluffy pecan pancakes, then have butter pecan chicken for lunch. For a midday snack, enjoy a couple of candied pecans, and end your day with pecan-crusted salmon and some hot pecan pie.
From cookies to pies, pecans go well with any baking dish. So for National Pecan Day, host a bakeoff with your friends and family — featuring our beloved pecans.
Pecans are non-fuss plants that don’t require a liver and a half to take sapling. Plant the seeds today, so you can reap the nuts tomorrow.
5 Important Facts About Pecans
It’s a vitamin party
It’s more than a crunch
A friend to the heart
A love for centuries
A dose of pecan for Apollo
Pecans are home to 19 different vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, vitamin E, magnesium, and potassium.
Pecan oil, processed from pecans, is recommended for those with a risk of heart disease.
Pecans have the official certification of the American Heart Association for being a ‘Heart-Healthy Food.’
A pecan tree grows to over 150 feet tall and lives for over 300 years.
Astronauts carried pecans to the moon in their Apollo space mission twice.
Why We Love National Pecan Day
Pecans are underrated
Pecans are the O.G. American nut
Pecans contribute to the economy
The sweet and crunchy texture of a pecan elevates any dish it touches. Be it candies, cookies, bread, pie, salads, or ice cream. It’s time we honor the contribution of this humble nut in our kitchen and celebrate National Pecan Day with full excitement.
While cashew came to America from Brazil and the California almonds are actually a gift of Spain, pecan is the singular nut native to America. Pecans were widely consumed by native Americans before European colonization.
The American pecan industry is worth over $3.5 billion. Just 15 states of the U.S. produce more than 75% of pecan of the world. The pecan trees are responsible for the livelihoods of thousands of families and a flourishing U.S. economy

I’m going to bow into the urge. i’m going to talk about my potential valorant oc. Sorry for no read more, I’m on mobile.
also valorant blogs with ocs PLEASEEEE interact I adore all of your ocs so much!!! Nuniq and Titan really inspired me to make my own valorant oc jslddksldj
His code name is Overture! I don’t actually know on whether or not to make Overture be his own character, or if I want him to be an AU version of my oc Akira (like how the Valorant oc Bios is an AU version of the original Bios?). For now, I’m going to be treating Overture as an AU version of Akira :) I’ll update you if I decide to change that.
okay Overture time naksxjzlmsnskajsk
Hailing from the heart of Texas, Overture is loud and proud: literally. Armed with sound-based Radiant abilities, this guitarist shreds his way through combat and silences his enemies with a simple hush.
I haven’t finished Overture’s kit, sadly. I’ve thought of him more as an actual character in the Valorant universe than a playable agent. Sorry. I think he’d be an initiator or controller? None of this is final, so I’ll probably change it soon. Here’s what I know so far:
1) one of his abilities lets him place down areas of silence, allowing for stealth. It doesn’t blind enemies. Good for areas with lots of traffic, and could be used by ally players to kill enemies who can’t hear them.
2) I’m not entirely sure how to handle his ultimate. I was imagining his ultimate allows him to let out a burst of sound, damaging enemies around him and applying the concuss effect for a couple seconds, which sounds like an ability that’s very Overture-like, but I’m afraid would stray too far into Duelist (or Fade) territory. The main thing I want for his ultimate ability is that concuss effect; but I’m not entirely sure how to do it. A drawback of his ultimate, I imagine, is how loud it is: it isn’t overwhelmingly loud if you’re very close to him (that would mess with people!), but it can be heard from very far away, alerting enemies to Overture’s location.
disclaimer for anyone who’s a fan of my original oc content: Overture does not completely line up with Akira in the canon of my oc world. They are different despite being the same person, for now. Almost like mirrors…
Here’s some basic demographic information on Overture:
Callsign: Overture
Agent number: 22
Name: Akira Karasuno
Age: 21
Country of Origin: United States
Species: Radiant
Basic background information: He was around 10 when the First Light hit, his sister being 9. Shortly after the First Light, he and his sister unearthed a chunk of radianite in their backyard; unaware of what radianite was, they brought it home to their mother. Uhhhh blah blah blah, skipping some stuff, Akira and Naomi’s mom is murdered. Differing from canon, is that their mom was bludgeoned to death. Sad! Unaware of how bad of a person his mother was, and trying to cope with his mother’s death, Akira pursued anything that let him keep his mother’s memory alive. That led to his discovery that she used to be in a guitarist in a band. This spurred on Akira’s already budding love of music; the guitar he’d carry around on his model and the one he uses to play is his mother’s stolen purple strat (she stole it).
Sadly, I only have his early childhood figured out. I’ll figure out his late teens and early adulthood before VP soon, which probably will help with the next section.
How did he join VP?: I’m not entirely sure yet, either! Overture is very fun for me to think about, but I’m also a clueless little guy about him. He joined VP after Fade and the new agent that’s going to be releasing soon, which gives me some room to work with, but sadly that means he never got blackmailed by Fade, which means I can’t do one of those Blackmailer cards. Sad. He isn’t as trained in combat as someone like Brimstone and doesn’t have the experience that older agents like Phoenix and Killjoy have, which manifests in his way of handling combat: relying on the element of surprise and his Radiant abilities to get the drop on enemies and quite literally blow their eardrums out. So I think he could have been recruited by Cypher like how Fade was, or recruited after making a misguided attempt to take something from a VP agent (Chamber, perhaps)?
What I know about his journey in joining VP is how much he distrusts other agents at first. Overture struggles with paranoia and an anxiety disorder, and VP has agents like Reyna, Omen, and Fade… You can see why he’d initially struggle with fitting in with VP. Although, he gets over his paranoia: he’s an extrovert under his layers of isolating coping mechanisms, after all.
He’d get along well with the younger agents, being 21 himself. I think he’d be closest to Raze, Phoenix, and Neon, although he would also be good friends with Breach, of all people. I think his closest friend would be Phoenix, who has the same “arts major who normal people don’t like because of x” thing going on. Also, despite Phoenix’s cockiness, he’s tolerable in Overture’s eyes: he isn’t the same vein of cocky as Yoru. Phoenix is overconfident in his abilities. Yoru would probably irk Overture a little bit, honestly, for his dismissiveness of other’s abilities. But they could work together if needed, despite them clashing a bit. Overture and Phoenix probably do things like make fun of each other’s accents (Overture has a Southern accent. Interesting, right?) or try street food together. Jett and Overture would be cooking buddies :)
Sorry if my analyzations of how Overture would interact with others is too much. I’m just excited, and don’t have a lot of information besides how Overture would interact with others.
Will design his outfit soon. Keeping the redness of his original design but leaning into a more practical version of it. I might tie his hair back.
Other tidbits: Overture is transmasc. He’s more prideful in him growing up in Texas than he is of his Japanese heritage: he has a weird relationship with his race (which I will cover soon. It’s not creepy weird, he just hates his dad). He has a sweet tooth, and prefers candy like taffy to hard candy. He really likes cats, and used to own one named Jiji (who is now owned by his sister). He misses his sister a lot. I thought it would be funny not to change his music taste, so he still likes 90-00s punk and rock music. Dabbles in some 2000s emo music also. Raze would definitely joke about him having the music taste of an old man. Despite only living in Texas for about 10 years, he somehow retained the accent. His special interests differ in the Valorant AU, so I think Overture has a special interest in old/retro/outdated technology, especially gaming consoles and gadgets like label makers and tape recorders. I feel so cringe for writing this whole thing about Overture. But I’m free.

Chili, a spicy and hearty dish, has been a staple in many cultures for centuries. However, it may come as a surprise that this humble food has gained a following among two seemingly unrelated groups: anarchists and neanderthals.
To understand why chili is considered gerundial for these groups, we must first look at the origins of the dish. Chili, or chili con carne, has ancient roots dating back to indigenous peoples in Central and South America. It was later adapted and popularized as a dish in Texas and other parts of the United States. This history of chili as a Native American and Texan food speaks to its rebellious and independent spirit, qualities that resonate with both anarchists and neanderthals.
Anarchists, who reject traditional forms of government and often advocate for a self-governed society, see chili as a symbol of breaking free from societal norms and expectations. The DIY nature of chili, where individuals can customize and experiment with various ingredients, parallels the idea of self-sufficiency and non-conformity. Additionally, chili is often associated with communal gatherings and potlucks, promoting the idea of solidarity and cooperation without the need for authoritarian structures.
Similarly, neanderthals, who represent a more primitive and simple way of life, see chili as a reminder of their ancestry. The dish's rustic and unrefined origins align with the neanderthal's rejection of modern society and its complexities. Chili's hearty and filling nature also appeals to the neanderthal's need for sustenance and survival.
Moreover, the popularity of chili in both anarchist and neanderthal communities is also due to its affordability and accessibility. This aligns with the values of these groups, who often reject consumerism and advocate for a more equal distribution of resources.
In conclusion, chili's history, DIY nature, communal aspect, affordability, and ties to ancestral ways of life make it a fitting symbol for both anarchists and neanderthals. Its status as a gerundial food highlights its relevance to the ongoing fight against societal norms and a longing for simpler times. So, next time you dig into a bowl of chili, remember that you are not just satisfying your taste buds, but also tapping into a rebellious spirit that has been embraced by these unconventional groups.

National Corn Dog Day
Get ready to enjoy a delicious snack on a stick! This crispy and savory treat will make your taste buds dance with joy.
And that’s all the excuse we need to head off to the fair, or anywhere else that could supply this deep fried food on a stick! The corn dog is the perfect blending of tastes: delicious cornbread wrapped around a hot dog and dropped into a deep fryer filled with oil.
What else could a person want from a quick and easy snack that can be eaten on the go? But it gets even better because they put it on a stick. It is common knowledge that anything on a stick is better, and National Corn Dog Day comes to remind everyone of that fact!
History of National Corn Dog Day
This American treat has an interesting and multicultural history. Corn Dogs can trace their heritage from the sausage makers of Germany and, by extension, those who immigrated to Texas in the United States. While the state certainly comes with more than its share of hot weather, the Germans who immigrated there weren’t intimidated. They moved there and set up business to sell their sausages.
As it turns out, those German Texans apparently found that their sausages were not well received. Because of this, they decided to be innovative, dipping the sausages in a distinctly American breading (cornbread) and frying them.
The first corn dog on record was documented in 1927, when a patent was submitted to the US Patent Office describing the process of making corn dogs in this way:
I have discovered that articles of food such, for instance, as wieners, boiled ham, hard-boiled eggs, cheese, sliced peaches, pineapples, bananas and like fruit, and cherries, dates, figs, strawberries, etc., when impaled on sticks and dipped in batter, which includes in its ingredients a self-rising flour, and then deep-fried in a vegetable oil at a temperature of about 390 °F [200 °C], the resultant food product on a stick for a handle is a clean, wholesome and tasty refreshment.
Since then, corn dogs have become incredibly popular, especially at events like fairs and county festivals. In addition, they have found a place in everything from school lunches to being served on military vessels like the USS George Washington. And, of course, frozen versions of the corn dog (on a stick or in bite-sized mini form) can be purchased frozen at the grocery store and then heated up at home. It just goes to show there’s no wrong place to eat a Corn Dog!
In celebration of this simple yet satisfying treat, a Corn Dog Celebration was inaugurated in the United States in 1992. Beginning in Corvallis, Oregon, the first one was a simple gathering  of a few folks who wanted to eat corn dogs and watch basketball.
The event grew bigger the following year when it expanded to other cities and included tater tots and beer. Eventually corporate sponsorships came through for the event (Foster Farms, an American foods company, and Jones Soda).
In 2008, the event peaked with nearly 5000 different parties on five continents, including one in Antarctica! Since then, the hype isn’t always quite as high, but this is still certainly a day worth celebrating.
How to Celebrate National Corn Dog Day
While some people might not think this is a reason to get excited, Corn Dog lovers mark this on the calendar as one of their favorite days of the year! Celebrations can range from the simple to the outrageous, but be sure to tell everyone about it and invite them to join in on the fun, as corn dogs are better when enjoyed with a loved one.
Try these Corn Dog related ideas for celebrating the day:
Eat a Corn Dog (Or Several)
National Corn Dog Day is a day to finally go out and get yourself your Corn Dog fix, whether buying them frozen in the store and throwing them in the oven, or heading out to a local county fair and buying one straight from a vendor.
Some people may even want to expand their horizons by trying a cornbrat, which is a bratwurst deep-fried in cornbread, which is basically just a gourmet corn dog–only a bit more substantial. Yum!
Get a Special Deal at Sonic Restaurants
One of the largest corn dog serving chains in the US, with locations in 44 out of the 50 states (and looking to expand internationally in the near future), Sonic typically offers a special for the day, such as 50 cent corn dogs (normally $1.29).
Wienerschnitzel is a California based chain that has stores in 10 states and Guam. They have been serving corn dogs since 1965 and have often delighted customers by offering two corn dogs for $1 in honor of National Corn Dog Day (normally $1.49 each).
Other chains and individual restaurants that serve this delicious treat often give special customer discounts in honor of National Corn Dog Day. If a Sonic or Wienerschnitzel isn’t nearby, it’s worth asking at local restaurants to find out which ones have a special offer.
Share Corn Dogs at Work
Those who work in a large corporation may be able to get their company to make plans in advance to sponsor a corn dog food truck to come to the premises for a special lunch. For smaller employers, grabbing some frozen corn dogs from a bulk grocery store and serving them to employees is a fun and rather inexpensive way to build rapport with staff.
Join A National Corn Dog Day Celebration or Festival
Folks in Oregon started it, so that would be the ideal place to celebrate the day! But various cities throughout the US and the rest of the world have also now joined in. Check out local community listings to find one nearby. If there isn’t one? Consider getting one started!
