I love being into war movies cause you'll look for a fan art or clips of whatever film you just watched online and there's only three references to it on Tumblr, Pinterest, Reddit and Amino combined and all of it was posted 2+ years ago by a guy who now exclusively pots about Bridgerton

Lisa Needham at Public Notice:
Despite a comically high number of attempts to stave it off, Donald Trump is set to face his first criminal trial later today. It remains to be seen whether he’ll be able to control his behavior any better than he did in his civil trials for defamation and fraud. But given his inability — or willful refusal — to adhere to gag orders in the run up to the trial, it seems unlikely. First, since it’s difficult to keep track of all of Trump’s criminal charges, let’s remember what he faces in this one. Last year, a New York grand jury indicted Trump on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first degree. Prosecutors allege that Trump faked business records to hide $130,000 in hush money payments made to Stormy Daniels in 2016 so she would stay quiet about their 2006 affair.
Yes, these are the same payments that, in part, led to Trump’s former fixer, Michael Cohen, pleading guilty to federal charges back in 2018 and spending more than a year in prison. The government’s sentencing memorandum in that case didn’t name Trump but talked about Cohen arranging payments to two separate women with whom “Individual-1,” a person who later became president of the United States, had extramarital affairs. Though there was never any official confirmation, it appears that shortly after Trump left office, federal prosecutors in New York decided not to pursue charges against Trump.
However, just because the feds stepped aside did not require New York state to stop pursuing similar charges. The 34 felony counts Trump now faces don’t refer to separate incidents but rather the multiple steps Trump took to hide the hush money payments. First, he is accused of faking a series of invoices to Cohen, saying they were for legal services when they were really reimbursement for Cohen paying the hush money. Correspondingly, Trump is alleged to have issued a series of checks to Cohen, which he falsely denoted as payment for legal services. Finally, prosecutors say that Trump then caused false entries about the payments to be created in the Trump Corporation general ledger. Trump is charged only with the falsifications as they relate to the payments to Stormy Daniels. However, prosecutors have also indicated they will be discussing the $150,000 paid to former Playboy model Karen McDougal so she too would keep quiet about her own affair with Trump.
Normally, falsifying business records is a misdemeanor, but if business records are falsified with intent to cover up or commit a different underlying crime, it is a felony. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has accused, but not charged, Trump of concealing violations of election laws and tax fraud. Prosecutors do not have to prove that Trump actually committed those crimes, or any other. All they have to prove is that when Trump falsified business records, he did it with “intent to commit another crime or to aid or conceal the commission thereof.”
[...]
None of this is good for Trump
This case is likely the only one that goes to trial before the election, given that Trump has had greater success obtaining procedural delays in his other criminal cases. Arguably, this case represents the least satisfying set of charges against Trump. That’s not because what Trump did here wasn’t a real crime or that his behavior isn’t indicative of his comprehensively criminal mindset. Instead, it’s that the underlying facts are already well-known because of Michael Cohen’s indictment and plea and that as appalling as the hush money scheme might be, it pales in comparison to stealing classified documents, trying to overturn an election, and inciting an insurrection. There’s a bit of an “Al Capone went down for tax evasion” vibe about the whole thing. However, Trump — who spent most of the weekend melting down on Truth Social — is not behaving like a person who thinks this criminal trial is small potatoes or that he is guaranteed a win.
Even if he prevails at trial or gets a conviction overturned on one of the numerous issues he’s already appealed, that won’t unring the bell of everyone outside the courtroom hearing all the evidence the prosecution will present. When you combine that with the fact Trump will likely not be able to control himself during the trial, there’s a real chance for the next several weeks to be wall-to-wall unfavorable coverage. No wonder he’s so desperate to make this all go away.
Lisa Needham wrote in Public Notice that the current Donald Trump falsification of business payments criminal trial that began yesterday is NOT a "nothingburger." #TrumpTrial

Aftermath
Summary: It´s uncomfortable for both of them but oh so necessary
words: 1.4k
Tumblr media
Masterlist
April 2018
Jisoo felt awfull.
Her head was pounding, her mouth was dry and her stomach was aching.
All in all, the girl felt like she got hit by a bus.
The room was dark and not even the lights of Nagini and Phinis Terrariums were on, meaning that it was probably way past 7 p.m.
She pushed herself up, making her blanket fall of her shoulders, and started searching for her phone.
It was placed on the little nighttable that was next to the bed.
Jisoo realized that she wasn´t in her own top half of her bunk but in the bottom half of Jisung and Jeongin´s bunk bed.
With a short double tap on the phone screen, it lit up. Showing her that it was indeed already 9:34 p.m. which wasn´t that late if she was being honest, but late enough to know that her stomach demanding food.
Jisoo threw the rest of the blanket of her body and swung her legs of the side of the bed. Maybe a little to fast if nausea she suddenly felt was any sign for it.
It took her a second to collect herself and breathe the uncomfortable feeling away.
The female could hear her members chatting quietly in the living room when she opened the door to join them. The ceiling light wasn´t on but The fairy lights Felix hung up when they moved in were on and she could see the way with out crashing into a wall.
Which didn´t mean that Jisoo managed to not trip over a random pair of shoes. One day she was going to burn them all and watch how the boys would get to practice.
“Fucking hell! Why do we even have shoe cabinet if nobody uses it!” she grumbled quietly but still loud enough for her members to hear.
The first one to react was the maknae. Jeongin jumped up from his spot on the couch, making Felix pout who had his head placed on the younger members shoulder.
He ran over and threw himself into her arms.
“Noona! You´re finally awake!”
The boy sounded close to tears and Jisoo couldn´t bare to be the reason of the youngers sadness.
She placed her hand on top of her head, tugging gently on his slightly disheveled hair and cooed into his ear.
“Don´t cry I.n-ah. I´m okay. No need for tears.”
Jisoo could only feel him nod a little and soon everyone joined in on the hug.
Well, almost everyone.
Minho stayed rooted to his seat on the couch. The boy watched as his members started fussing over the girl.
He noticed how pale her face still looked and got up to get her a glass of juice to get her sugar levels back up again and a small portion of the dinner they had ordered.
She had been asleep for the last 14 hours after all and had yet to eat something.
Minho didn´t know what to do. The entire day felt of with all of the members worrying about the sleeping girl in her room and even the light of the groups sunshine seemed dimed down several notches.
10 minutes later he dared to go back to the living room with Jisoos dinner in his hands.
Everybody had finally setteled down. Minho placed everything in front of the girl, urging her to eat slowly.
“Here. We ordered Ttoekbokki earlier and I managed to save you some before these hooligans could get their hands on it.”
Several “Hey´s “ and “Yah´s” could be heard which made the confused girl snort and take the offered Chopsticks Chan pulled out of nowhere.
It wasn´t normal how Minho was acting and it unsettled Jisoo a little if she was being honest.
“Thank you!” she said quietly.
The second oldest gave her an acknowledging nod and sat down on the opposite end of the couch.
They chose a movie and the 00-liners cuddled together, making changbin complain about being excluded from the cuddle pile.
Chan sat down next to Minho.
“She isn´t mad at you you know?”
He looked at his leader, frowning a little at him.
“What do you mean?” he asked a little skeptical.
“You know exactly what I mean. Jisoo isn´t one to hold a grudge, she never was. And she understood why you gave her the cold shoulder back when I picked her to be part of the team. She still does!”
The younger of the two sighed.
“I think today happened because she wanted to prove something. Be it to herself, the company or to all ou you? I don´t know.  I´m not arrogant enough to believe that she cared that much about me to overwork herself for it, but it felt really shitty to find her like this.”
Chan huffed a little after hearing his answer. He couldn´t believe that Minho really thought like that.
“You underestimate how much she cares for you! Our girl isn´t good with emotions, nor is she good with communicating what she feel and Jisoo would probably rather jump of the company building than admit that she hurting.
That´s not your strength either and that´s the problem.
I know that you´ve seen how good she works with us soon after your fall out.
Talk to her, she isn´t going to bite your head off!”
Before Minho could answer Han interrupted.
“Hyungs! We are watching a movie! Why are you not paying attention?” he whined at the two.
The interruption came very convenient for Minho. He didn’t know what to say to the leader either way.
When the movie ended, one by one said good night and went to bed.
Minho and Jisoo were left alone when Chan decided to get up and leave them to it. He patted  Minho on the shoulder and ruffled Jisoos hair before going to his, Changbin´s and Felix´s room.
“Good night oppa!” she called after him and started getting up herself.
“I´m gonna go too. Thanks for dinner! Good Ni-…”she started.
“Can we talk first? It won´t take long!”
The girl didn´t give an answer. She just looked at him. Her eyes were wide and Minho could see the confusion shine in them.
“First of all I want to say that i´m sorry. You do belong here, you always did and it was wrong of me to tell you otherwise! I was wrong.
For that I want to apologize!”
For a short moment he thought she would just turn and walk away but then she looked to the ground.
“You called me Jisoo-ah.” She whispered, glancing at him before looking back down.
“Huh?” That wasn’t what he expected her to say.
The confusion must have been apparent on his face.
“Today, when you found me., you called me Jisoo-ah. Ever since we´ve known each other, you´ve always called me Jisoo-ssi! What was different today? It´s not like you like me or care about me so why change it now?”
The boy could feel his heart sink. That was never what he wanted her to think!
But he could understand why she thought like that. He didn´t exactly give Jisoo much reason to think otherwise.
“That´s… that´s not true…! I do care about you. Jisoo you are a brilliant young woman! You are smart, kind, sweet, your dancing impresses me every time, your vocals are incredible and without you Stray Kids wouldn´t be right.
I can understand if you hate me….”
Jisoo gasped and hurried to cut him off. She never wanted him to believe that. It wasn´t even true, not in the slightest!
Did she feel sad when she saw how he would talk and joke with everyone but her? Yes, but she didn´t blame him! One person couldn´t like everyone! She saw that with Hyunjin and Jisung!
“I don´t hate you! I wanted to give you space because I didn´t want to force you to be around me if you didn´t like me.”
“But that´s just it Jisoo-ah! I do like you and i´m sorry for not talking to you a lot earlier!”
They went silent.
Jisoo could feel tears starting to gather in her eyes. She sniffeled and wiped her eyes, hoping that Minho wouldn´t notice.
He did notice and before he knew what he was doing, Minho pulled the girl into his arms.
“No don´t cry, please don´t cry!”
“Sorry!” she sniffled again but continued to cry.
“If it´s not to late, could we maybe start over? Get to know eachother properly? We could watch a movie later this week?” Minho asked hopefully.
“I would love that…”
He smiled and wiped a stray tear from her Cheek.
And if they knew Chan had heard the entire conversation then none of them talked about it.

Post 1058
John T Earnest, born 1999, California inmate BP9253, Federal Register 85152-298, incarceration intake in November 2021 at age 22, sentenced to life
Murder, Attempted Murder, Use of Weapons, Hate Crimes
The man who opened fire on a Poway California synagogue in a deadly antisemitic attack was sentenced in San Diego federal court in December 2021 to life in prison, plus 30 years. The hearing marks the final chapter in the dual prosecution of John T. Earnest and adds to the life term that was handed down to him three months earlier in state court.
Earnest, 22, pleaded guilty in September 2021 to a 113-count federal indictment that charged him with civil rights, hate crimes and weapons charges stemming from the April 27, 2019, attack on the synagogue at Chabad of Poway and arson at the Dar-ul-Arqam mosque in Escondido California about a month earlier.
The shooting killed Lori Gilbert-Kaye, 60, and wounded the founding Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, 8-year-old Noya Dahan and her uncle Almog Peretz, 34.
Earnest was also charged with state charges of murder, attempted murder and hate crimes in San Diego Superior Court. In July 2021 he pleaded guilty to those charges in a deal with prosecutors that allowed him to avoid the death penalty and instead get a sentence of life in prison without parole.
The attacks came during a Passover service at the synagogue. Both state and federal prosecutors said Earnest, then a 19-year-old student studying to be a nurse at Cal State San Marcos who had led an unremarkable suburban life in Ranch Peñasquitos, was driven by fierce hatred of Jewish people.
Shortly before the attack, Earnest had posted an screed online full of racist and antisemitic statements that declared the “European race” must be protected. He praised the March 2019 mass shootings at New Zealand mosques, attacks that left 51 people dead, and referenced the accused gunman in an October 2018 attack at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, where 11 people were shot and killed.
In the “open letter” Earnest said he had planned the attack for at least a month, and also admitted he set the fire at the mosque.
In a series of hearings in both state and federal court Earnest has shown little emotion and less regret. At a preliminary hearing in state court in September 2019 he smirked and smiled during testimony about the attack, and at a lunch break in the hearing, he turned toward spectators and made a “hang-loose” gesture with one hand, thumb and little finger extended.
Yet in a sentencing memorandum filed last week, his federal defense lawyers argued Earnest has turned a corner. Lawyers wrote Earnest condemned his actions in a phone call from jail that apparently was recorded.
However those comments came two days after jail officials found a document in Earnest’s jail cell where he again advocated for violence against Jews. Defense lawyers downplayed that by saying it was written long before his apparent condemnation of violence.
The lawyers also wanted Earnest to spend his sentence in a state prison, where he would be closer to his family. They said that would help his rehabilitation. But federal prosecutors instead wanted to have Earnest imprisoned at the super-maximum security federal prison in Florence, Colorado — the same facility where notorious criminals such as Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev are housed.
U.S. District Court Judge Anthony Battaglia said he would recommend that Earnest serve the sentence in federal custody, although it will be up to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons to accept him. It was not immediately clear if or how state corrections officials would be included in that decision.
The lawyers said that the turnabout in Earnest’s life from a fledgling nurse to armed hatemonger could be attributed to the “rapid online radicalization” that exploited Earnest’s still-developing immature brain.
They wrote that his road to “a good, productive life was unfortunately interrupted by a young, still-growing and immature mind, the mind of a youth who was still trying to identify who he was and left Mr. Earnest to being vulnerable to peer pressure and a fear of exclusion.”
As of September 2023, Earnest was housed under the custody and control of California state authorities at the California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo, California.

New research finds that more water is evaporating from lakes each year than previously estimated, that reservoirs may play an outsized role, and that the evaporation rate is increasing.
Earth is truly an ocean planet. Only 3 percent of Earth’s water is fresh, most of which is locked up in ice. Of the fraction of remaining fresh water, more than 87 percent resides in lakes. The amount of water lost from lakes by evaporation is a critical component of Earth’s water and energy budgets. (About 75 percent of the energy, or heat, in the global atmosphere is transferred through the evaporation of water from the Earth’s surface.)
Now, researchers have found that the amount of water evaporating from lakes is significantly more than previously thought, and that reservoirs may play an outsized role in the process, according to a new NASA-funded study published in Nature Communications.
The team, led by hydrologist Huilin Gao of Texas A&M University, used Landsat data to measure the surface areas of 1.42 million natural and artificial lakes (reservoirs). Previous studies on global lake evaporation have used basin-scale measures or gridded cells rather than individual lake areas.
The researchers then estimated the evaporation rate based on meteorology data and other factors, including how much heat is stored in the lake. Heat storage is an important driver of evaporation that hadn’t been accounted for in previous studies. The researchers next used the area and evaporation rate to calculate the volume of evaporative loss. They found that annually 1,500 (+/-150) cubic kilometers of water are lost worldwide—the equivalent of three Lake Eries.
“This suggests that lake evaporation plays a larger role in the hydrological cycle than previously thought,” said first author Gang Zhao, a global ecologist at the Carnegie Institution for Science, in a statement.
The map at top shows the spatial distribution of evaporative loss from lakes worldwide. Note the higher levels of loss in the north, where most lakes are located. “Even though the evaporation rate in these regions is small, the total evaporative water loss is substantial,” Gao said.
The researchers said the results underline the importance of using evaporation volume, rather than evaporation rate, to assess how climate change affects lakes. “Knowing that volume of evaporative loss is larger than previously estimated can also help us to better understand the role of lake evaporation in the hydrological cycle,” said Zhao.
Each year, roughly 450,000 cubic kilometers of water evaporate from the world’s oceans. An additional 71,000 cubic kilometers evaporate from the land, largely from soil and plants, but lakes play a role too. According to the new research, while lakes only account for 1.57 percent of the global land area, they contribute 2.37 percent of the water evaporated over land each year.
Tumblr media
The above map shows the ratio of evaporation from lakes compared to total evaporation from the land by region. The land portion of the total evaporation was adopted from NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Global Terrestrial Evapotranspiration product. Darker red and orange indicate that lake evaporation is a significant source of evaporation in those areas. This occurs in arid regions or areas with large lakes, such as the Great Lakes Basin.
Additionally, the team found that the rate of water loss accelerated by 3.12 cubic kilometers per year between 1985 and 2018. The increasing volume loss was driven by three factors, all influenced by climate warming: an increase in the evaporation rate, a decrease in ice cover, and an increase in lake surface area. The latter includes the construction of new reservoirs, which have increased the amount of open water by more than 500 square kilometers per year over the 34-year study period.
“Both climate change and the construction of new reservoirs have contributed to increased lake surface area,” Gao said. “For instance, the lake area in the Tibetan Plateau has been increasing due to glacier melt and increasing precipitation.”
The researchers also highlighted the data on reservoirs. While reservoirs account for only 5 percent of the volume, and 10 percent of the surface area, of all lakes, they contribute 16 percent of the evaporative loss. Additionally, while evaporation is increasing from lakes overall at a rate of 2.1 percent per decade, the rate of evaporation from reservoirs is increasing at a rate of 5.4 percent per decade.
“From a global perspective,” Zhao said, “the total reservoir evaporation can be larger than the combined use of domestic and industrial water,” not including agriculture, the largest user of water. “This suggests that reservoir evaporation is an indispensable factor in water management, especially in times of drought and global warming.”
The global lake evaporation volume (GLEV) dataset is the first long-term, monthly time series with data on such a large number of individual lakes. It is publicly available as an Earth Engine App.

YouTube suggested this to me. It's by CapitalQ
This is my attempt to document all of the musical/lyrical/poetic references and samples in released They Might Be Giants & solo project songs. This project has been a few months in the making, and I hope you enjoy and discover some great music to listen to! Thanks to the research of hundreds of fans on TMBW.net for making this project possible, as well as the great work by projects like the Don’t Let’s Start Podcast. Many of these references will likely never be confirmed by TMBG, but I’ve tried including ones that feel intentional. Non-TMBG clips I’ve included in this video are meant to represent the most well-known version of each song (that the Johns were more likely to have been exposed to), and I’ve noted the original writers of each included song in the end credits. The years I’ve specified for these songs are typically when the song was first released by the relevant performer. Some clips have been further edited for timing/content to highlight relevant parts of songs. Dates for Dial-A-Song tracks are best guesses from TMBW. Covers such as “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” and “New York City” are not included in this video, as they would form another video just as long - which may be coming.

The Foreverlost - Chapter 1
February 2018
“Koskinen, up.” A male’s voice echoed into the cell.
Kaiya’s eyes opened slowly, it was still dark, but within seconds she remembered what today was; release day. Acting quickly as though she’d miss it if she didn’t move quickly enough, she stood up off of her canvas cot, pulled on her musty, gray sweatshirt with her assigned number on the back; 031493, slipped on her tattered rubber slip-on shoes and stood at the door of her cell waiting for the guard to open it. A deafening buzzing noise bounced off the cement walls and her cell door slowly opened.
Kaiya’s heart beat so quickly, she couldn’t believe she was getting out. It had been 5 long miserable years spent inside a Russian prison and she was finally free.
As she stepped out of her cell, two guards followed closely behind, large guns held in their hands. “Is this really necessary?” she thought. As of today she was no longer an inmate, but I guess old habits die hard for these motherfuckers. However, she quickly reminded herself that the Russian corrections department didn’t give a shit about her or laws, to be honest, and knew if she stepped even a toe out of line even on her way out of there, they would throw her back in and no one would even be looking for her, so she stood up straight and listened to every direction barked at her.
The guards led her to the administration office where a very old woman was behind a desk. “Name?” she barked without ever looking up at Kaiya.
“Kaiya Linnea Koskinen. Inmate number 031493.” She spoke robotically.
The old woman lifted her eyes to meet Kaiya’s eyes, comparing her face to the mugshot on her computer screen. 5 years of being imprisoned in one of the worst correctional facilities that Russia, and arguably the world, had taken a toll on her. She was extremely thin, her dark brown hair cut short. Her eyes sunken in from malnourishment, her skin pale like a sickly Victorian woman from lack of sunlight. However, a guard was nice enough on the last head shaving day to let Kaiya keep her hair, knowing she was going to be released soon. Of course, that “kindness” came with a price, one that Kaiya would rather forget. But the guards and other inmates knew exactly what her slowly growing hair cost…
The woman stood up from her desk and walked through a door behind her, minutes later emerging with a garbage bag. “These are your belongings that were confiscated at the time of your arrest. You may get dressed in the restroom over there,” she pointed to the left, “Then you are free to go.”
Kaiya took the bag from the desk and went into the bathroom, followed by one of the guards who had accompanied her to the administration office. Kaiya looked nervously over at him with a questioning look, “Until you leave, you are still a prisoner.” he muttered, staring her down.
“Well are you going to look away so I can undress?” her tone was emboldened by the looming sense of freedom.
“Do you want me to throw you back into your cell, bitch?” the guard replied harshly.
Kaiya stared him down as she stripped and got dressed into the clothes that were in the bag. A pair of skinny jeans, a pair of black sneakers, a bra, panties (which still smelled used so she opted to throw them away), and a black Metallica t-shirt. When she got to the shirt she stopped, forgetting the guard was watching her like a hawk. Sadness washed over here when she held the garment in her hands, instinctively bringing it to her nose and inhaling deeply. She could swear she could faintly smell him still…
“Hurry the fuck up.” the guard snapped, bringing Kaiya crashing back into reality.
She pulled on the clothes, which were incredibly loose. She had gone into the facility when she was 28, but since being arrested in the Summer of 2012, she had lost a considerable amount of weight. Now at 34, she was shockingly thin. But being held in such harsh conditions for so long would do that. Food was scarce, and at times inedible. Food was used as a punishment, even if you yourself did nothing wrong.
Kaiya finished dressing and ran her hand through the bag to be sure she got everything when her hand passed over cold metal. Joy filled her heart when she realized what it was; a diamond necklace her boyfriend Nikko had given to her that she loved dearly, she was convinced some Russian prison employee had made off with it, but thankfully that was not the case. She carefully moved the necklace into her bra without the guard seeing, knowing he could very well take it from her and she’d have no recourse. As much as she loved the necklace, she needed it to get her where she was going. Kaiya would have to pawn it to not only get herself a train ticket back home, but considering he had gotten arrested in the summer and it was now the dead of winter, she needed warm clothes.
She dreaded getting rid of the last piece she had of Nikko, but if he were still alive, he would tell her to do it and scold her for even considering not doing so.
Kaiya balled up the empty trash bag and threw it in the bin beside her, suddenly remembering she had eyes on her. The guard nodded and led her back out of the bathroom. Kaiya stopped by the old woman at the desk, “Um, just out of curiosity, is there an unclaimed property box? I don’t have a coat and…” she trailed off looking at the snow coming down outside.
The old woman huffed a sigh and grabbed a cardboard box from a closet. “Look in here. See if something will fit.”
The only thing remotely acceptable was a scratchy dark green woolen sweater and a gray knitted beanie, “Better than nothing…” Kaiya muttered.
She pulled it over her t-shirt and pulled the hat over her choppy, uneven short hair. Kaiya cleared her throat gently, trying to get the attention of the woman once again. “What is it?” she snapped.
“I apologize, but could you please tell me how I could get uh, my boyfriend’s remains? I’d like to take them back home with me.”
The woman stared at her puzzled. “What are you talking about?”
“My boyfriend was a prisoner at the men’s prison up the road, he was killed in a riot. I was told he was cremated.” Kaiya explained, her hands beginning to shake.
The guard behind her began to laugh, the woman furrowed her brow at Kaiya, “We don’t keep the remains of prisoners if family cannot claim them within 30 days. They were most definitely destroyed.”
Numbness overcame Kaiya, “Oh,” her voice just above a whisper. “Thank you.”
And with that, she followed the guard out of the administration office and then out of the building.
“Nearest town with a train station is down that road, about 16 kilometers southwest. Enjoy the hike.” the guard laughed before slamming the front door behind her. Suddenly Kaiya found herself outside, but not surrounded by barbed wire. She took in a deep breath of freezing winter air, she was free.
THREE DAYS LATER
Kaiya finally arrived in Helsinki. It had taken her a whole day to make it from the prison, to Moscow, then another day to make it to St. Petersburg, and then a final day to make it to Helsinki. The money she had gotten from the necklace was long gone, spent on the train tickets to Helsinki, she had survived on uneaten food from strangers at the train stations, but it was still infinitely better than the food she’d been surviving on the last 5 years. She would hands down prefer cold fries and a half-eaten burger to moldy bread and boiled mystery meat. But she was choosing to focus on the positive, she was home. After nearly 20 years away, she was back in the city she was born and raised.
It took her a moment to figure out her bearings, but shockingly she was easily navigating herself through the streets. She was looking for a shop she knew all too well, hoping the people she knew still owned it. A few hours later, as the sun was beginning to set behind the Helsinki skyline, a familiar red sign came into view; Aikuisten Lelukauppa
Her stomach was filled with buzzing anxiety, she twisted her hands nervously as she approached the building. In the window, a familiar sign; a woman in red, long black hair, pulling on sexy black boots. “Please still be here, please still be here…” she whispered inaudibly as she pulled open the shop door. A tiny bell rung above her head.
“Welcome, welcome,” a familiar voice called out from the back of the store, “Let me know if you need help with anything.”
Kaiya’s heart leapt into her throat, her shoulders released with relief and she made her way towards the counter. “Yes, I was actually hoping you were hiring.” she spoke up, her voice shaking despite herself.
The shop owner was a tall, gray-haired man. His face was old, but his eyes were kind and the brightest of blue. They matched hers, though through no familial relation between them. The man wore a black vest over a long, red flannel shirt. He stood looking through a supply catalog and raised his eyes to meet hers.
His eyebrows furrowed as he studied her face, he recognized her. “You look familiar.”
“I do?” she smiled, her eyes filling with tears.
In shock and disbelief, Kari Valo sat the catalog down and came out from around the counter, “Kaiya?” he questioned as he grabbed her and pulled the small framed woman into his arms. “Kaiya, my girl! Could it be?”
Kaiya felt herself melt into her father-figure's arms. “Its me…. It’s me.” she let the tears flow as she clung to him.
Kari took a step back but kept his arms on her shoulders. At over 6 feet tall, he towered over the just barely 5 foot tall woman before him, “Let me look at you. Are you well? Where have you been? Why didn’t you call?” he let the questions flow with barely any pause between them.
Kaiya wiped her eyes on the scratchy green sweater’s sleeve. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. I wanted to call but… but…” she stammered.
“Oh god, forget it, it doesn’t matter. Come here.” he engulfed her in his arms again and kissed the top of her head.
Not a moment later, the bell above the door rang out again. “Dad? Mom said she’s been trying to call you and if you’re late coming home again she’ll have your balls mounted on the wa–” the man walked in looking at his phone but looked up and stopped mid-sentence when he saw his father holding a petite woman in his arms.
Kaiya turned around to face him and the man’s face dropped, “What– Kaiya?” the man whispered, his eyes wide with bewilderment, his arms lowered, nearly dropping his phone and he stepped towards the pair. Kaiya held out her arms and allowed this second man to scoop her up effortlessly and lift her high above the ground in a bear hug.
“Jesse…” she sobbed into his coat.

The new duet of “This Christmas” weaves together stunning new vocals recorded with instrumentation by Lalah, with previously unheard vocals from an unreleased demo Donny made of the song in 1970. In the video, Donny plays acoustic piano instead of the familiar electric heard on the original. Lalah sits in with her father as they trade verses and harmonize flawlessly.

Tash Sultana and the healing power of music
I chose to talk about Tash Sultana, a singer, and self-taught multi-instrumentalist, for my final project. First of all, throughout my work, I will make sure to respect Tash Sultana’s choice of pronouns and will be referring to them as a They/them. Then, as there is much to say about their talent, I will try to focus on their relation with music as a passion, but more exactly, as a healing process. Sultana’s talent has allowed them to find their own place in a society in which they felt they didn’t fit. In relation to that, I will also discuss to what extent their work can be categorised as psychedelic rock, a counter culture which emerged in the 1960s.

Russia increases its dangerous behavior in Syria with "unprofessional" flight and missile firing in MQ-9
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/21/2023 - 10:23 am in Military, War Zones
Russia has intensified harassment of American forces in Syria, flying over American positions with armed fighter jets and approaching a few hundred meters of American jets, U.S. officials said. Perhaps the most alarming thing is the fact that a Russian ground-to-air missile system fired at an American drone in November.
Lieutenant General Alexus. G. Grynkewich, head of the Air Forces Central, expressed concern about the actions of Russian warplanes, warning in a statement that they increase the "risk of miscalculation".
According to AFCENT, Russia has been routinely flying into the airspace over Syria that the two countries previously agreed would be controlled by the U.S., and its fighters have reached 160 meters of American warplanes in that airspace. Armed Russian warplanes have flew over U.S. ground positions more than two dozen times since early March.
A Russian surface-to-air missile was even fired at an American drone over Syria. On November 27, an SA-22 located in eastern Syria fired on a U.S. MQ-9, a U.S. official said. The missile got it wrong. The incident was first reported by The Washington Post.
Tumblr media
Drone MQ-9 Reaper.
The Air Force Center said that the incidents with Russian warplanes demonstrate a "dangerous" pattern of pilots that threatens the approximately 900 U.S. soldiers in Syria who assist local groups in the battle against ISIS militants, as well as their American partners. Russia is in the country supporting the regime of Bashar Al-Assad.
"This type of unprofessional and unsafe conduct in Syria is nothing new, but it has become more frequent in the last two months and puts our troops at risk in the air and on the ground," said U.S. Central Command spokesman Colonel Joe Buccino. "This kind of behavior is not what we expect from a professional force."
The most recent incident occurred on April 18, when a Russian warplane flew into U.S. airspace in eastern Syria. The airspace over Syria is subject to an agreement in which U.S. and Russian forces must stay out of each other's way, including a 34-mile conflict zone around the Al Tanf Garrison. The two countries operate a line of conflict designed to prevent the two military personnel from entering into direct conflict.

“U.S. Air Force fighter planes took off from air bases in the region and intercepted the Russian fighter,” the Air Force Central said. "During the interception, the Russian pilot maneuvered unprofessionally at 2,000 feet of the U.S. aircraft, violating permanent conflict protocols." The U.S. disqualified the video of the incident.
Since March 1, there have been “63 overflights in total until April 19, of which 26 have been armed,” said AFCENT spokeswoman Captain Lauren T. Linscott.
Retired General Jeffrey L. Harrigian, who served as commander of AFCENT between 2016-2018, said that the number of recent overflights from Russia was "significant".
“They know where our men are because we have always been there,” Harrigian said. "This raises the bigger question of what their mission is, because you are just putting yourself in a situation where someone on either side can make a bad decision and the consequences of this will be something that no one wants."
According to Linscott, the 63 incidents violated one or more of several protocols agreed by the two countries: Russian aircraft flew over areas that the U.S. and Russia agreed to notify each other before transiting, violated mutually agreed impasse distances of aircraft and ground forces, and carried out armed overflights of ground forces.
“Throughout my career, I have not seen this kind of disrespect for the agreed protocols and the rules of conflict,” Grynkewich said.
An incident on April 2 was a matter of particular concern for AFCENT. At that meeting, a Russian Su-35 had what AFCENT called an "unsafe and unprofessional" exchange with an American F-16.
“The Russian Su-35 was not unarmed when it entered the airspace,” AFCENT said. "These aggressive actions of the Russian crew demonstrate a lack of competence and can lead to miscalculations and unintentional escalation." The command also released a video of this meeting.
The latest Russian actions occur when U.S. personnel already face deadly air strikes on bases in the country of militant groups supported by Iran. The most recent attack on a U.S. site took place on April 10 in northeastern Syria, when a rocket crashed around the site in support of the Conoco mission.
Grynkewich previously said that there were intermittent periods of Russian activity, but things began to improve at the end of February. Overall, Russia's activity became increasingly dangerous after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, he said.
Russian Su-35s have had two known disagreements with U.S. aircraft in just over a month. On March 14, two Su-35s intercepted an American MQ-9 Reaper drone watching the Black Sea. One of the Russian planes cut the MQ-9's propeller, forcing the U.S. to knock it down due to damage, the Pentagon said.

On April 4, two days after the Su-35 and F-16 incident, Grynkewich flew an F-16 from the 77th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron on a combat mission over Syria at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia in support of the campaign against ISIS.
“It is essential for me, as commander of AFCENT, to be as aware as possible of the challenges our fighters face in the air,” Grynkewich said of the mission.

The U.S. military insists that, despite the threat of militant groups supported by Iran, Russian interference and Turkey's attacks on Kurdish groups with which the U.S. is partners, the United States remains committed to eradicating ISIS. Grynkewich said he is prepared to defend the air with force if necessary - something the U.S. Navy did when an F/A-18 shot down a Syrian Su-22 in 2017, although U.S. and Russian aircraft never came into conflict. AFCENT has been burdened by limited resources, however, struggling to meet the requirements of two and a half squadrons. He recently received aged A-10s, based at Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates to ensure that it could meet the minimum capacity requirements.
“We saw Russian aircraft reach 160 meters from our aircraft,” Grynkewich said. "As a professional air force, we will do everything in our power to ensure the maintenance of flight safety and engagement in accordance with our special instructions. However, if any entity threatens the security of coalition forces in the sky or on the ground, we will take quick steps to deal with the threat."
