I learned about Kei Trucks today.

They can be found for sale in the us if they're over 25 years old (bc us laws)

They are so cute.

Honestly would be a great affordable way to have a truck.

Articles even say they're less carbon footprint.

The ones I see listed online don't have a lot of mileage on them- we're talking less than 40k here.

Some of these 90's ✨gems✨ and earlier don't come with AC or radio. Lmao.

Aka. they're literally meant to be farm/work trucks.

They seat like two people unless you can get hands on a van version. The better option imo.

They're imported so older models may have the driver's side on the right.

The manuals have more typical 4-5 gears (that automatics only have 3!).

The Honda Acty is the only one that is not 4wd... typical lol

Rear-wheel drive and 4wd options are Subaru sambar, Daihatsu hijet (later rebadged as a Toyota), Mazda scrum, and Suzuki carry.

They can need a lot of maintenance (because of age to rubber parts) and new parts take time or cost to arrive.

Lots of caution driving them on modern roads.

Looks like they require premium gas, which is the norm in the countries they're imported from.

The Kei trucks you can buy legally in the US.

We’ve shared a few Kei vans and pickups here before, including a #SubaruSambar, but those were JDM Keis that conformed to the displacement and size rules that created the tiny #Keitora. But since the 1980s there have also been Kei-based vans and trucks with larger displacement engines - mostly for markets other than Japan (like the Bedford Rascal or Piaggio Porter), but sometimes for Japanese buyers who wanted a tiny vehicle but something more powerful or more highway capable. - The Sambar is one of the longest-running Kei trucks, but it once had a bigger brother for these non-Kei areas; the Subaru Domingo - aka the Sumo/Libero/Combi/Estratto (depending on the market). Where the Sambar had to make do with just 660cc and fit within a tight size footprint, the Domingo had larger impact bumpers and, much more importantly, 1.0L or 1.2L three-cylinder SOHC engines from the Justy. Like the Domingo, the Justy was an enlarged Kei car, based on Subaru’s Rex, but scaled up to do battle with international cars like the Fiat Panda. - Both vehicles used Subaru’s 997-cc EF10 as their base engine for JDM consumption (to avoid costlier road tax), but international markets favored the 1,189-cc EF12, with 73 fuel-injected hp by the 90s. That’s not much, but the Justy weighed under 1,800 lbs. with 4WD, and the Domingo about 2,200 lbs., giving the tiny van real distance capability and highway speed. - JDM Keis have caught on like wildfire in the U.S. in the past decade, but in Europe and the U.K., these larger-engined Keis were a familiar sight in the 1990s - either as delivery or utility vehicles or as miniature campers. You might not think you can fit that much into one, but the Kei vans are marvels of efficiency and Subaru even offered a factory camper - the Domingo Aladdin, with an awning, a portable stove and shower, and sleeper pop-top - this Scottish Domingo has some of the Aladdin components. - Also popular on these little vans? Retro touches. Many false-front kits exist to make them look like VW T2 vans or other types of classic vans ranging from Dodge Rams to Fiat Multiplas. Subaru Sambar Try TS Sunroof SunSun-Window 4WD, 1987. The Sambar is Subaru's longest running model, having been first introduced in 1961 and now in its 8th generation. It was Japan's first truck compliant with the country's strict Keitora or Kei vehicle tax class. The 4th generation model introduced the "Try" as a designation for the van model which was also available with the high-roof and 4 wheel drive for the first time on the Sambar
