Reposted• @lizmearns I absolutely love ❤️ vintage rugs and there aren’t too many spaces where I wouldn’t consider using one. Their colors and the often intricate patterns with the patina of age and history have a way of bringing all the elements of a room together. Another advantage of handmade rugs is you can often find unusual sizes which was exactly what we needed in this entryway where a typical runner would have been too narrow and standard sized rugs wouldn’t have had the length. In a world where so many things are discarded so quickly it’s always astonishing to see a rug made by hand withstand a hundred years or more of being walked on - and still look this great. “After living in this transitional New England style home since 2010, the homeowners were eager to remodel their house to better fit their decor taste and lifestyle. They were dreaming of a more modernized and refreshed remodel within a soothing color palette. I was honored to be awarded the opportunity to deliver a classic, coastal elegance with more current, approachable furnishings and customizations throughout their home to enhance the stunning marsh-front views. As a designer, I’ve always appreciated sculptural lighting and furnishings, a signature element seen throughout this cedar shake cottage, and the client who is an artist herself fondly embraced these sculptural accents. I’m thrilled to soon begin photographing the second half of this transformative renovation so stay tuned!”

Reposted• @lizmearns When this young couple decided to move from their large home in a nearby suburb into an amazing two bedroom condo in a historic building in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, we were presented with a number of challenges related to downsizing so dramatically. Fortunately, unlike many historic homes, the bedrooms were very large so we were able to use the second bedroom to solve several problems. On one side of the room we created a private, casual sitting area where they watch tv and relax while the other side of the room serves as a home office and dressing area where we built a floor to ceiling custom wardrobe to expand on the somewhat limited closet space. We not only had the sofa custom made, we had to have it partially built on site to fit through the tight hallway of a 19th century building. A leopard print rug and reading chair round out the decor.
