Tuesday - CRITIQUE DAY
Today we did critiques on our studio projects, the this one definitely was a challenge at the beginning. I had a really hard time finding an idea that I liked and how I wanted to go about making it. I'm proud for pushing myself and I focused on using as many techniques as I could to show case the skills that I've acquired.
REFLECTION - "Air Head"
This piece, represented as an oversized blazer, which typically represents power and a sense of fear or almost has a daunting aurora, was manipulated to to show a sense of love and care. When I first came up with this piece, I wanted it to have some sort of personal effect on me. I know I reference it a lot but I was extremely nervous and fearful of becoming a fine arts major and pursuing a career in art. I was scared of what people may think and if I would be able to become successful in this type of career. My parents have always been my biggest supporters and have supported me through every decision I made. When I have these fears, I always turn to my mom. She always brings me endless comfort and support to my fears. So with this piece, I wanted it to look homemade. I wan't everything to look like it was made with love and care. The blazer represents my fears coming into this career and the people who made me doubt my passion. I added heart cut outs to sleeve to "always wear your heart on your sleeve" and added "comfort" to places on the jacket that would be able to hold in your fears. I truly love this piece, even though it looks weird and is unlike anything I've ever made before. But the value it holds for me became so much larger than that.

“Go Hand In Hand” is an online community where artists and small businesses can support each other and gain mutual benefits. Artists can create artwork according to the ‘topic of the week’ given and post them on the platform. Every week, posts with the most likes will win gift cards from our small business partners. These gift cards will then help small businesses gain engagement and more customers. Both artists and businesses will gain recognition from the people visiting the platform. Bustin out my trusty #studioprojects CS5 for some final tracking on Mouthpiece for @richardtscott . I love this mic almost as much as I hate it’s shockmount. This is a surmountable obstacle though, and (as you might have noticed) the suspension elastics have been upgraded to contain a bit more of the rainbow 🌈 (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CelyRzNuHRr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

not a painter by any means but when I want something done, I usually do it myself (with the help of many friends) because I am more than capable of doing most things. Very grateful for all the support, this space and for the drive I have. Cool shit in the works per usual.

My Studio Project: Rosson Crow & Me!
Title: The Evidence
Materials: Gouache (& pen for text)
Dimensions: 13.5” x 11”
🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵
I truly loved working on this piece! I chose to respond to Rosson Crow’s piece, “Belle Isle Conservatory.” I was struck by how the collection of nature was a tribute to God’s artistry and existence, though Crow is not a believer as far as I know. It pointed me to a thought I have often, that nature and creation point to there being a creator. I was inspired by Crow’s plants and color scheme, and created a room with various potted plants, retro wood paneling, a glitching television, and bright flooring. The lovely Anna made my piece even better by pointing out how the television is made by man, and the plants are made by God, and how the TV being so distracting in this piece is a perfect example for how we are distracted by other things and not God’s craftsmanship.

Tuesday - CRITIQUE DAY
Today in class we critiqued my final studio project. I have never had so much fun creating something from scratch and being able to to see it come to life from the beginning. I am incredible proud of how this piece turned out and I would really like to expand on it in my free time.
REFLECTION - "Fall of Innocence"
A testimony to the fear of letting go of innocence and the ignnorance that you have to the rest of the world. It's about grappling with the expectation of society, along with finding who your are. The worries of not knowing what tomorrow may bring of what your future looks like. This piece became personal to me through this process. I feel like I've become so scared of what life is like after college, what will my career look like, if I'll be successful...so many fears and worries that I had never truly acknowledged before. But this piece is supposed to be a testimony to that and the idea that those fears are okay and that you will survive tomorrow and the next and who you become is who you were intended to be.
After this project, I feel like I started understanding who I am starting to become as an artist and the excitement I get from creating something that I truly love and I'm passionate about. I love being able to manipulate fabric in a way that helps me reflect what I'm feeling. I feel like this project became so much more to me than just an assignment I had to complete. I felt like myself and I feel like I transformed into another world when creating this piece.

Thursday
Today we looked at the stamp and stencil samples. I really loved how my stencil turned out and I really loved working with textile paint. I like how contrasted it is the the fabric and how vibrant the colors are. I'd like to make a larger piece of my stencil and see how I could create it into a piece of art or how I would be able to use it in another piece of work. As for my stamp, I wasn't a huge fan of using the thickened dyes, but I did really like my stamp. I would like to possibly refine it or make a series of them to try out some new patterns.

STUDIO PROJECT
“The Mind of an Empath” by Dayton Roderick
Materials used: black spray paint, white spray paint, cardboard, small orange hanging lights, small blue hanging lights, hot glue
This piece was created in response to Diana Thaters artworks, who uses colored light in many of her pieces. The person in the middle represents how empathy can be all-encompassing at times. It takes over your body, not just your mind. The orange light represents how empathy sometimes causes mental strain and anxiety, while blue represents peace and acceptance of empathy. In short, sometimes empathy’s good, and sometimes it’s bad. The combination of the two lights creates the purplish color, which highlights the mixture of good and bad when dealing with empathy.

My Studio Project
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m not completely confident in what this should all say but I wanted to talk about why I did this.  My artist Rebecca Campbell was very set on her ways in wanting to create what she wanted to create.  She was told many times not to do something because it was risky for her work.  However, she chose not to heed to the suggestions and did what she wanted.
When I started this semester, I wanted to prove that I was an artist by trying a different method.  Tina told me that I wasn’t doing it for myself and that if I did my studio project on something besides photography or video, then she would give me a poor grade.  I wanted to follow her direction, but as the semester continued to unfold in chaos, I began to draw and paint for myself.  I was proud of what I was doing and it was for me and only me.  So I decided to pursue these mediums alongside my photography.  Technically, I am rebelling like Rebecca Campbell and that is where my original idea came from, but I honestly fell in love with drawing and painting to express my favorite things.
A FEW OF MY FAVORITE VIEWS
The title of this series is “A Few Of My Favorite Things”.  I took photos of three views that have significance in my life and either painted them with gouache or drew them with pencil.  All three are on the 9″x12″ art paper from the studio.
“View from home” is the view from my Jessup room.   I know my weakness is sunsets so I decided to add an artistic flare of such a bold sunset.  While it is stereotypical to what a sunset is, I couldn’t express the many different sunset views I had this school year. The thing with this place is that it is the only place I’ve called home over the last 2 years.  And while that is a tough reality, this view has been significant for me.
“View from Quarantine” is from Nebraska.  I’ve been in SIP here for 3 weeks and we spent countless quarantine days walking in the middle of nowhere.  I realized that this time of life is really hard but also shifting the way we will live life from now on. But this unique situation is not something I want to forget, and I wanted to capture one of these views of the cornfield.
“View from my Point of View” is of two of my nieces. Being an Aunt is the greatest job I have ever had in my life.  I captured this moment of my babes as they watched their parents, aunties, and uncles (3 of my sisters and 2 of their significant others) zip line across the mountain.  I hadn’t seen them in over a year and a half (the one on the right I got to see 6 month before) and I had never spent so much time away from them besides when I lived in Russia.  This moment captured my heart and I wanted to draw them simply, and not complicate it through painting that I did not feel like I could do properly.
I’m not like other artists in my skills and abilities, but this project gave me so much peace as I pursued something outside of my comfort zone.

Studio Project Update
I’ve gathered my materials for my vision! I want to utilize Sarah Cain’s use of art supplies that are deemed immature and obnoxious to create something beautiful and complex.
