Peridot and Lapis Lazuli´s relationship in Steven Universe: An analysis
Lapis Lazuli and Peridot's relationship is, as many relationships from Steven Universe, quite messy and complex and changes throughout the series in more than one way going from somewhat enemies to friends and companions and even then, later gets explored how that dynamic wasn't in balance, showing there how doesn't always have the full idea of the nature of the relationship between two people.
Tumblr media
To say that Lapis was upset with finding out that Peridot living in the old barn would be putting it lightly. Peridot was partially involved in keeping Lapis prisoner in the spaceship that brought them to Earth as well as interrogating her. She had more than one reason to not be fond of Peridot and want to avoid her.
In most of ¨Barn Mates¨ Peridot tries to be nice to her to make amends and Lapis turns down everyone of them. While it is understandable the reason of why Lapis acted this way, she went a little to out of the line when she destroyed Peridot's gift, which was a tape recorder, something that was personal for her.
Peridot gets frustrated with this and then goes off about how she gets why Lapis feels this way: She can't never go back to Homeworld, Earth doesn't feel like a home yet and she feels alone in this. ...But she later adds that this is one of the reasons of why she wants to make amends with Lapis, because she gets what Lapis is going through since she is going through the same issues.
Lapis demands for Peridot to leave, to which Peridot does, giving up on trying to make peace with Lapis. That's when even Steven gets tired of Lapis's behaviour and points out that she isn't giving Peridot a chance and is not right to be so mean to her.
Tumblr media
Some minutes later Peridot comes back running, being chased by the Roaming Eye Homeworld spaceship that is, of course, looking for her. Lapis sees that Peridot is in danger and decides to help her by taking down the Roaming Eye using her water powers. While it isn't said, her actions indicate that she was trying to make up for how she was so mean to Peridot earlier. Some seconds later she asks to Peridot if she was okay, showing that she was willing to give her a chance now.
Tumblr media
In the episode that followed, Hit the Diamond, Lapis helped by distracting the ruby squad to protect Peridot from being taken away. I wouldn't say they were friend at that point but that Lapis seemed to like Peridot at least enough to care about her well being.
For a while we didn't see too much of Lapis and Peridot until Amethyst's arc in the episode ¨Beta¨. In this episode we see them being friends and hanging around. They got into human things. They like watching shows together, they like playing music and making art things with junk they find lying around in the barn.
Tumblr media
So for some time it seemed like everything was going more or less well between them. In ¨Gem Harvest¨ they are growing together crops. Peridot believes that they work like gems in the kindergartens but she is dissapointed to learn that crops work differently from that.
So Steven ends up bringing up a dog like pumpkin to life using his gem powers and Peridot and Lapis end up adopting her.
Tumblr media
Some fans have described Peridot and Lapis Lazuli's relationship as a queerplatonic relationship, considering that Peridot was written with the intention to be aro-ace. This interpretation could apply as in some ways their dynamic can be read as a ¨old married couple¨ for the way they interact and are living with each other. Pumpkin could be seen somewhat as their daughter with Peridot and Lapis being her ¨parents¨.
Moving on, their relationship seemed to be going well until ¨Room for Ruby¨ showed that Lapis was still struggling a lot to adapt to Earth because of her own trauma. Most of the episode she felt really down, specially by seeing how Navy was supposely adapating so quickly to Earth, making Lapis feel jealous. At the end of the episode it was revealed that this wasn't the case and that Navy was faking it to get her spaceship back.
"Raising the Barn" acts a bit of followed up to ¨Room for Ruby¨ by revealing that well, Peridot often has to walk on eggshells around Lapis and there are things she avoids telling Lapis to not upset her. Peridot has been negleting her own feelings in the relationship, for the sake of ¨being there¨ for Lapis. She tells to Steven that she wants to stay on Earth, that she doesn't want to leave, but she still has ¨to go¨ with Lapis.
The thing with Lapis Lazuli is that while she isn't a bad person... she can be a lot to deal with. From what it was said by Peridot, she felt that she couldn't be fully honest with her more often than not and she was losing herself in their dynamic, having to sacrifice quite a lot to make it work.
So Steven suggests to Peridot to be honest with Lapis about wishing to stay on Earth. Peridot does this and Lapis gets in part upset that this was brought up in the last minute and hurt because Peridot hasn't been completely honest with her. The two have a bit of a fallout that ends up with Lapis abruptly leaving Earth out of fear of ¨getting caught up in another war¨ again and taking the barn along with her. Leaving Peridot and Pumpkin on Earth.
Tumblr media
The consequences of this fallout get explored in the following episode ¨Back to the Kindergarten¨. In this episode Peridot, Steven and Amethyst try growing a garden in the Prime Kindergarten. The whole episode acts as a metaphor for Peridot and Lapis Lazuli's fallout in ¨Raising the Barn¨, how Peridot misses Lapis and the barn and how she has been feeling down lately. The story ends with the idea that while her relationship with Lapis didn't work out, she can still try making connections with other people and start new elsewhere, finally seeing the possibility of moving on from the events of ¨Raising the Barn¨.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, from Lapis Lazuli's perspective there is the episode ¨Can't Go Back¨ which explores many aspects of her character but mainly the guilt she feels about having left Earth so abruptly and taken the barn with her, feeling that she can't go back after the way she left. There is also her huge anxiety and fear of getting caught up in a war again due to her own traumatic past. Lapis explains to Steven how she is scared of having to go through the same situation again, believing only bad things are going to happen, something that Steven answers with ¨what if something good happens?¨
Tumblr media
Steven's words seemed to have some effect on Lapis because in ¨Reunited¨ Lapis shows up in the battle against Blue and Yellow Diamonds and drops the barn on Blue to distract her for some moments. She has a brief exchange with Peridot, who is glad to see that Lapis came back and is helping them to fight the Diamonds.
Tumblr media
It isn't clear what happened between Peridot and Lapis Lazuli after the events of Reunited and during the time skip after Change Your Mind. However, based on some hints and their interactions in the Steven Universe Movie, they seem to be in better terms now.
Tumblr media
It's very likely that they had some conversations about what happened in ¨Raising the Barn¨, Lapis apologized to Peridot for the way she left and eventually Peridot forgave her for that. In addition to this, they likely established some boundaries between them and found other social circles to be in during Era 3. In that way they stayed as friends but also avoided going back to their previous status of their relationship by being in more equal (and healthy) terms.
In all, i think what can be taken away from their dynamic is that relationships can be messy and how it is important to avoid losing yourself in a relationship if you are trying to help someone who is going through a lot of problems in their life. You can support someone while establishing boundaries for yourself and being able to be honest with them. And, in part is how about how things don't always work out and people can go through fallouts. That doesn't mean that the two parties have to hate each other and then can even remain friends, accepting that their previous relationship didn't work as they wished.

Day in Fandom History: May 26…
Peridot gained a new roommate in Lapis, however Lapis’ history with Peridot seems rather conflicted. So Steven decides to help both Peridot and Lapis resolve their differences so they can get along at the barn. “Barn Mates” premiered on this day, 7 Years Ago.

pearl is the second person lapis has ever fallen in love with (the first being peridot), and the first person to ever have an even half healthy mutual relationship with (can go into more detail on the issues of her and peri w in the universe in my head but this isnt the ask for that JSBSJS)
lapis would be the first person that pearl falls in love with that is completely unrelated to rose (ie doesnt remind pearl of her)
i dont think they would ever fuse tbh unless it was some kind of dire emergency. lapis didnt have to worry abt that w peridot since peri was avidely against that for herself, but tried to make herself for pearl. it did not go over well
pearl absolutely infodumps to lapis all the time. pearls the talker lapis is the listener (not always ofc, but)
lapis would have sm fun w the ungodly amount of water that makes up pearls room
they cuddle and nap together sometimes<3 pearl doesnt as often as lapis, but will whenever lapis has an especially hard day and needs the closeness + escape
they absolutely lose track of time talking abt how much they love steven JSBSKS
they have plant children together absolutely. huge plant mom(s) energy
to be honest i do not see either of them as the jealous type, and i think theyd absolutely use eachother as therapist/free ears to talk about all the fucked shit theyve gone through
they get together after lapis comes back from the moon, i personally hc that she briefly lives at steven's house between the barn being destroyed and little homeworld being built
pearl LOVES to keep her hands on the small of lapis' back. or just wrap her hands around her at all (she loves all the exposed skin from lapis' outfit lmaoo)
pearl is sooo the gift giving type w how she can keep and treasure things in her gem, she totally gets lapis copies of camp pining hearts and they watch them together to bond<3 (i think this would be early in their relationship, when theyre still learning to be friends and pearl is trying to make up for the mirror thing)
lapis's love language is physical affection (smth that gets supressed pretty heavily from all the trauma), so when she's comfortable enough she is ALL OVER pearl sldbslnw
honestly i think they would be in a sort of semi open relationship. i think that would be good for both of them to have like. casual mates and such since they both (pearl especially, obviously) dedicate themselves so entirely to one person (this might be projection for lapis so correct me if im wrong there LMAO)
going off the last one i dont think theyd ever rlly call themselves like gfs or anything. theyre just in love<3

yesssss time to be toxic >:))
💜 a crack ship
(steven universe) i was a 2015 lapidot hell crackshipper. it was awesome. this was before they had any canon interaction besides lapis being on the prison ship with peridot and jasper. i had more trouble shipping them post-tiny peridot but still loved the development they had together thanks to storyboarder jesse zuke. i also completely dodged the discourse about lapidot/amedot somehow?? probably bc i stopped caring pretty soon after the barn mates era
💔 a least favorite ship
literally anything involving characters i hardcore ship not being together, or opening up their relationship. in four swords, it’s anything that breaks up or adds to vidow; for she ra, it was catradora. i simply cannot partake in the multi/polyshipping when i’m genuinely invested in a pairing <3
❤️‍🩹 a popular ship that you just don’t get
uhhhhhhh ngl most zelinks… i find that the only way i can wrangle those blonde bitches into being interesting is SIGNIFICANTLY changing them from how they are in canon. and then they just kinda become something else entirely, and i love canon botw/totk/tp/oot link way too much to change his personality and my interpretation for shipping purposes.

Sorry for long ask but would Mewt and Newt have a scene similar to Steven Universe Peridot and Lapis from s3 ep Barn Mates? Something like:
Newtwo: Look, i get it. I said a lot of things you didn't deserve to hear, beat you and almost killed you, but i'm TRYING to fix things up! I just- tell me what do you want from me, and whatever that is, i'll do.
Mewtwo: I want you...to LEAVE!
Newtwo:...Ok.
I'm not all that familiar with Steven Universe but yeah, that sounds about right

Is Peridot an unintentional archivist, records manager, or something else entirely? [Part 1]
Tumblr media
Peridot, shown in her debut episode "Warp Tour," making a log of her trip to Earth and what she saw while she was there.
So, I recently began rewatching Steven Universe, starting at season 1, and I realized even more archival themes than what I had previously concluded, beginning with one of the characters, Peridot. Some readers may remember I wrote about Steven Universe before, at the beginning of this year, noting the presence of VCRs, their preservation, other records within the series, the special library of Buddy Buddwick, and archival records used in defense of Steven at his trial, to name a few aspects.
Reprinted from my Wading Through the Cultural Stacks WordPress blog. Originally published on Dec. 2, 2021.
However, I was mainly relying on memory in writing that post, and its different once you begin watching a series again. As such, this post will be focused on one specific character, Peridot, and whether she is an unintentional archivist, records manager, or something else entirely in the series as a whole. Warning here that this post will give spoilers for part of the show.
In episodes within seasons 1 and 2 of Steven Universe, Peridot often records her progress with Gem experimentation and the cluster on her "finger screens." She is first shown making logs in her debut episode [Warp Tour] and makes another log in the episode "Keeping it Together," before Steven, and his friends, the Crystal Gems, chase her across the Prime Kindergarten. [1] Unfortunately, her screens and limb enhancements are thrown into the water in the episode "Catch and Release" by Amethyst. In the following episode, "When it Rains," she tells Steven she doesn't know anything without her screen and tells him that all her logs up to a certain date are backed up in the Prime Kindergarten. She also tells Steven she read over a few hundred years of reports and displays her records which show many attempts at artificial fusion, prototypes for an artificial fusion that would have destroyed the Earth, the Cluster.
Following this, she gets an audio tape recorder, making logs for her life on Earth, her experiences, her attempts to get along with the Crystal Gems (Amethyst, Garnet, and Pearl), and more. [2] This until the episode "Barn Mates" when Lapis destroys it after Peridot gifts it to her in hopes of becoming friends with her. The audio tape recorder becomes an important part of her character development as she adapts to living on Earth rather than living on Homeworld. In the process, you could say that the recordings that Peridot does are archival records.
As I noted in my previous post about Steven Universe on this blog, Peridot notes that she had backed up her logs before, finding information on  Gem fragments from reports. In the episode "It Could've Been Great" she goes through an old Gem computer system to find information about the cluster, Gem locations, and the planned Earth colony. The question remains, is Peridot an archivist, albeit unintentionally? That is what I want to answer in the rest of this post, divided into two parts. The second part will be published tomorrow.

Kinktober 2023 Day 19-Tooth Brushing
Steven Universe-Lapidot
Peridot teaches Lapis how to use a toothbrush. It gets weird.
written for @kinktober2023
requested by anon
This story is rated E for explicit. It is for mature audiences only. All characters are over 18. NSFW under the cut.
Peridot really wanted to build a bathroom. She kind of missed the bathroom back at Steven's house. It was strangely comforting in its own bathroom way. So she decided to build one. It wasn’t hard, and easy once she used Greg's credit card for supplies. She had no idea what Greg was so mad about.
Once it was finished, there was only one thing left to do. Show Lapis around!
"And this is the soil removal unit, or a bath as the humans say."
"What’s this thing?" Lapis had picked up a toothbrush.
“That my friend is a toothbrush. Humans use it to brush their teeth.”
“Why?”
“Well, you know how humans need to consume smaller, weaker organics for energy?” Lapis nodded. “Well some of that organic matter gets stuck in their teeth and needs to be brushed out. Observe.” Peridot put some toothpaste on the brush. “This is toothpaste. It’s not actually paste. I know, I was disappointed too.” Peridot began brushing her teeth, the paste foaming at her mouth. Lapis watched in fascination.
“Could I try?”
Peridot nodded then spit in the sink. Putting more toothpaste on the toothbrush, she put it in Lapis’ mouth. She gently brushed her barn mates teeth. As they stared into each other’s eyes did the gems realize just how intimate the situation was. As Peridot continued brushing, blushes appeared on both their faces.
“Now, you ah, spit in the sink.”
The blue gem did as she was told. There was still an awkward feeling in the air. Hoping to break the tension she said, “Can it do anything else?”
Peridot was eager to change the subject. But in her haste she was far too honest. “The vibrating mechanism is great for masturbation!” She phased out of her onesie, leaving her naked, save her glasses. She turned the toothbrush on, and shoved the handle up her pussy. It’s only now that Peridot made the situation so much more sexual than early. “So that’s that.” She went to remove the toothbrush but Lapis stopped her.
“No, let me see you finish.”
As Peridot continued to masturbate, Lapis got a nice look at her naked form. The inner lips of her pussy were a dark green to contrast her lime green skin. Her breasts were moderate with nipples a dark shade of nipples. Near her pussy she had given herself a small tuft of blonde pubic hair.
Lapis watched as Perry's face twitched as the toothbrush vibrated around inside her. Her expression was surprisingly cute.
"Oh stars!" Peridot came, her walls clenching around the device as she sprayed her juices all down her thighs and the toilet seat. She was still blushing was she pulled the brush out of her sex.
Before she had a chance to explain herself she saw Lapis turning around and bending over. "I want to do it too."
Peridot gulped. 'Ohstarsohstarsohstars.' Lapis' clothing wasn't a big onesie, so she didn't need to phase everything off like Peridot. The green gem lifted up Lapis' flowing dress, revealing her blue ass. Peridot could feel herself sweating. She could see Lapis' cute pussy visible just underneath. Her inner walls were a darker shade of blue. Lapis was plenty wet already after watching Peridot get off, so the handle slid in nice and easy. The vibrations affected her right away.
"Fuck stars!" Lapis' whole ass quivered as the toothbrush shook her to her core. Lapis looked back at her, her hair all tousled and face flustered. Perry couldn't take it, despite just having gotten off herself. She ran over to her roommate and kissed her deeply and passionately. Her tongue pushed into the other gem's mouth and met her tongue. Lapis kissed back, her tongue rolled over Peridot's.
Soon the blue gem's body surrendered and came. Her walls spasming until the toothbrush fell to the floor.
Breathing heavily, the two gems looked at each other. Lapis said, "I think I like toothbrushes."

My Steven Universe criticisms
Hello, Steven Universe fans/mutuals! Today i’m making a post bringing up some issues i have with Steven Universe series in general that i have noticed while watching the show. Much like any fan any of the show, we all have some things we don’t like about it and think they could have been executed in a better way. A thing that is common to see in any other fandom. Probably some of you may agree with these criticisms or have seen it somewhere else before. Others points may be less common.
I’m going to cover both the original series (Steven Universe) and Steven Universe Future in this post. So you have an overall idea of what you are going to read.
Let’s start:
1) Some episodes from the show would have been better if they were longer/were specials
This is a point i have rarely seen fans and people outside the fandom bring up. There are some episodes from the show that are very lore heavy or important for the characters that would have worked better if they have lasted 13-15 minutes or were half hour specials instead of the typical 11 minutes.
Tumblr media
One example i can think of is the episode ¨Now We’re Only Falling Apart¨. The episode itself is pretty good but i think it is something that could have worked better if it was a 22 special instead of only being 11 minutes long. This is supposed to be an episode that explains tons of things that are crucial for the show, such as Pearl and Rose’s backstories, what made Pink decide to ¨become¨ Rose Quartz, what inspired the rebellion, etc.  You would expect for an episode like this to be longer but sadly it was limited in time much like other episodes.
Another example other of this is ¨Alone at the Sea¨. This episode could have worked better if Lapis and Jasper had a longer conversation about their toxic relationship when they were Malachite and thus addressing in more depth in what they both failed at and what they did wrong (even if Jasper didn’t realize it yet by that point). Since it was a very important episode for both characters, i feel like it could have lasted 13-15 minutes to explore their past toxic relationship better instead of making their scene rather rushed and confusing for the audience.
I think that this issue explains general pacing problems and some things not getting a deeper explanation oustide of a quick scene. It is what causes other problems in the show, because most episodes had to be 11 minutes long. With longer episodes, there are things that could have been explored better and given a better conclusion overall.
2) Lapis Lazuli’s character arc is rather messy
Tumblr media
I really love Lapis Lazuli as a character and how she overcomes her trauma over the course of the show. She is an interesting morally grey character with multiple sides to her. I like how she isn’t exactly a ¨bad¨ person but she isn’t exactly ¨good¨ neither.
However, i have two issues is how her arc is handled in the series:
Firstly, she doesn’t seem to have an arc built the same way other main/recurrent characters do, as in the sense of ¨mini arcs¨ that explore and evolve an specific character from the show. Peridot has her ¨mini arc¨ in Season 2 with around 8-9 episodes. Amethyst has hers in Season 3 while Jasper is a main antagonist. Garnet has one near the end of Season 5 about how she feels about herself and looking up to Rose Quartz. Lapis, on the other hand, has three episodes at the start of Season 3 ( Same Old World, Barn Mates and Hit the Diamond) but after that she seems to have her own episode every 7-10 episodes. It’s a bit weird how it is paced out in the rest of the series. I think her arc needed to have few more episodes or more screen time for her flaws and issues to get better addressed. For example: There is a comic issue about Lapis being constanly scared of what could happen in the future, which is related to her trauma. She later has a talk with Garnet that helps her with calming down. This is something that could have been an episode for the show.
The second issue that i have with her arc, which ties a bit with the first problem, is how often Lapis Lazuli’s toxic traits were given a ¨pass¨ unlike other characters from the show. It feels like she didn’t always had to face the consequences of her actions and/or weren’t properly brought up, which kinda felt like she was given special treatment by the narrative. I think this in part comes from how Lapis was usually seen from Steven’s perspective and him having a certain bias. Steven buried his feelings when it came to bringing up her flaws and struggled being honest with her. Peridot took Steven’s example, explaning why she struggled with being honest with Lapis Lazuli too, leading to having an unbalanced-rather codependent relationship with her.
Tumblr media
This problem seemed to have been fixed a bit in SU Future in ¨Why So Blue?¨,  where Steven is less biased towards Lapis and is better at bringing her issues up. He seems to be more firm to her while being proud of her making an effort to change at the same time. This episode in general is pretty good for Lapis because it gives a more realistic take on her character, in how she can be nice but she has tons of issues she has to work in, she still can lash out to others and lose control.
I believe that SU Future could have had an episode involving Lapis and Jasper having a conversation about their relationship and both talking about went wrong to give a better conclusion to their conflict. While maybe Jasper still didn’t realize how toxic it was, Lapis could have given her thoughts on it looking back at how bad that was and maybe offering Jasper help if she needed something.
Speaking about Jasper...
3) Jasper didn’t get proper exploration to her issues
This is something that many Jasper fans out there have talked about. About how Jasper needed more screen time and how we didn’t get to see her issues explored properly in the show.
Tumblr media
Jasper herself is a very interesting character that shares tons of parallels to Steven in both the original series and in Future. In Future they are a foil of each other and their characters arcs are linked together.
Honestly, i do not mind if Jasper wasn’t helped by Steven in SU Future like Peridot and Lapis Lazuli were helped in the original series. Steven by that point was too mentally tired from having to help everyone and wasn’t in the best place mentally to help her. (Forcing her to accept his help, being condescending and over stepping boundaries). Jasper was also too stubborn to get help, thinking it would made her weak and she didn’t deserve it. All this is understandable giving the characters and the context in SU Future. The issue is that we never got to see how Jasper feels about the whole Pink being Rose reveal, the gem that she hated most of her life; how she feels about being from the Beta Kindergarten and her feeling that she is defective deep down; how she feels about her previous relationship with Lapis after the timeskip, etc.
Tumblr media
This could have been fixed with having a few more episodes about Jasper. Maybe Fragments being a two part episode or more episodes about Steven training with her. Steven could have spent more days with her and thus growing closer to her and learning about her. This is why is not that rare to see fans writing fanfics or comics that take place after the events of ¨ I Am My Monster ¨ and before "The Future", when Jasper is starting to live on Little Homeworld and getting the help she needs. Because, unlike other recurrent characters, her issues weren’t explored with the same depth, despite her being a complex interesting character.
I would love if in some near future we get an special about her character getting developed better and diving into her psyche. If not, some spin-off comics about her being on Little Homeworld. That would fix this issue i have of her arc feeling ¨incomplete¨.
4) Season 4′s pacing is kind of awkward
I’m not sure how to explain this but there is something about Season 4 (also know previously as Season 3 A) that feels like the first half is awkwardly paced. The episodes of this half aren’t exactly bad, in fact, most of them are good and they follow up certain plot lines and character arcs. The issue to me is that it takes around eleven episodes until the the space adventure arc happens ( From ¨Steven’s Dream¨ to ¨That Will Be All), so, it takes a while for the the elements to come to play. Maybe if the space adventure arc took place a bit earlier, like, episode 6-7, this would be less of an issue and making the season more easy to digest.
It could have also helped if in ¨Gem Harvest¨ Lapis had a bigger role in the episode and she even could have had a conversation with Andy about how it’s hard to let things from your past go.
Maybe this is more of a personal issue of mine and other people don’t mind about it that much. I just think that this half of Season 4 could have been paced better.
5) Bluebird as episode feels unnecessary
Tumblr media
I don’t hate this episode but it feels like it is repeating a lesson that the show teaches in other occasions in a more nuanced way with other characters (People aren’t always going to change their mind or don’t think they need help). The series already did this with Jasper, Eyeball and a bit with Bismuth in Season 3 with Steven failing in helping them in the context and blaming himself later for that. Also, with Aquamarine in ¨Stuck Together¨ and with Kevin’s character.
This episode gives this same lesson that you can find in almost every other animated series delivered in the most cartoonish way possible using the same characters to give the same message again. Instead of wasting time with these characters, we could have had an episode exploring Jasper or Lapis, or being about anything else. This episode feels like most obvious in your face lesson in SU Future.
I can give an episode like ¨A Very Special Episode¨ more of a pass because the lesson is more related to Steven’s arc in Future and how he can be self-destructive when it comes to helping people. In addition to this, we get to see more of Rainbow 2.0 and Sunstone’s personalities that we couldn’t in ¨Change Your Mind¨.
I would be less harsh with ¨Bluebird¨ if the episode have had a proper follow up in which we see Aquamarine and Eyeball prefering to hang out together instead of seeking revenge on Steven. It would have nice to see this as an example of Steven not befriending a gem but they are still able to change for the better.
6) Rose Quartz’s character could have been left in a better position
Tumblr media
One issue i have with Rose Quartz’s arc is the opinion the characters have on her the last time we see her being brought up. She is potrayed as terrible and a bad person. Which in part it is true, she wasn’t a good person and hurt people who considered her a close friend.
However, Rose Quartz was also someone who started the Gem rebellion and saved Earth from being hollowed. She protected humanity and gave place to gems that were considered defective in the eyes of Homeworld’s system. She sacrificed her position as Diamond to be able to protect Earth among other things.
The point is that she was someone who was trying to change and battled the toxic upbringing she had with the other Diamonds, who were abusive towards her. In her path into trying to be a better person she made a lot of mistakes and her self hatred made her do self-destructive things like hiding things and keeping secrets from everyone.
I think it would have been more nuanced for the last scene that she is mentioned that she was a gem who wasn’t good but she wasn’t exactly a monster neither. She was as flawed as any other gem and she should be seen as such. She did some good thing and she did some bad things. The episode ¨Volleyball¨ ends up giving more or less this idea about Rose Quartz’s character with both Pink Peark and Pearl having a more completed idea of what kind of gem Rose was, which is pretty good. I think it could have been nice for Steven as character to have this a moment reflecting on this in a later episode, even if he still feels very mixed about Rose. It would have been a better conclusion for her character in the show.
-----------
So, there you have it. Here are some of my main issues with the show. The ones that bother me the most are the first three points (Some episodes should have lasted longer, Lapis’ and specially Jasper’s arc could have been better handled). Note that there are other things like the animation but i think it’s something that has been brought up so many times by others that i would be beating a dead horse. Plus, other animated shows i have seen from CN and Disney TVA don’t have stellar animation neither, they just happen to be better directed or a bit more consistent. (Disney TVA shows have been having better animation lately though).
As for the Diamonds, i think they could have had more episodes in the original show but i do understand that the crew was given 5-6 episodes by the network to wrap up the entire main storyline. Although i wished their arc could have been longer, the writers tried giving them a conclusion the best way they could, with all the pacing issues that comes with it. I care more about Lapis and Jasper’ arcs were handled since they were from the start of the show and were more recurrent characters. That’s all.

Day in Fandom History: May 26…
Peridot gained a new roommate in Lapis, however Lapis’ history with Peridot seems rather conflicted. So Steven decided to help both Peridot and Lapis resolve their differences so they can get along at the barn. “Barn Mates” premiered on this day, 6 Years Ago.

I’m getting to a point where I genuinely do not trust people who blindly defend Steven Universe Future’s portrayal of mental health, particularly PTSD, barring the fact that a person I knew who did so ended up being a raging ableist about PTSD triggers.
Outside of SU:F itself, a lot of the characters in the show with PTSD were just... raging assholes for no reason? And I think the only time they did this right was with Pearl. Pearl was deeply insecure, traumatized, and angry, and she ended up taking it out on Amethyst throughout season 1. For starters, the buildup to her and Amethyst actually fighting isn’t sprung about in a single episode (cough cough Lapis and Peridot, but I’ll get to them later), and Pearl actually apologizes! She comforts Amethyst and apologizes for hurting her, and begins to treat her better, and I really like that. It portrays how PTSD may induce behavioral issues without excusing those behavioral issues or refusing to acknowledge them.
And then the crewniverse completely fucking forgot this by season 2.
I love most of seasons 1-3 of SU but good god they did not handle Lapis well in season 2, at all. Lapis is similar to Pearl in some ways -- insecure, angry. Except Lapis doesn’t have anything where she apologizes and tries to do better. She just saves Peridot for a reason that... isn’t really explained. We don’t see her have some sort of realization about how Peridot is really trying and that maybe she should be a little nicer or something like that, she just. Does. And then they act like best buds after that. I think they end up having a cute dynamic and all, but the set up to it is extremely confusing and half-baked. You can’t even make the “oh it had to be rushed” argument like for season 5 and Future either, this was season 2.
You could make the argument that Lapis didn’t trust Peridot because of her time spent on the ship, which would be fair... if we actually saw how Peridot treated Lapis. Peridot was not the one threatening and manipulating Lapis. Jasper was. Alllll throughout Barn Mates, Peridot was doing nothing but trying to make Lapis feel welcome, and Lapis responded with nothing but scorn beyond a level that was reasonable. And Peridot gets no apology or explanation for this whatsoever.
Additionally, when it’s revealed that Lapis was also abusive/toxic in the Malachite fusion, there’s this very, very heavy bias towards her that doesn’t sit right with me. I’m not saying Jasper WASN’T abusive, she was, but it feels like Jasper wasn’t even given a chance to get better or to have possible healthier relationships expanded upon. Was it because she’s more butch than Lapis..? I dunno. It really doesn’t sit right with me, but I’ll avoid rambling about it for too long. TL;DR, Lapis just kinda did what Pearl did but worse. Moving on.
Steven. Good fucking christ on a pike Steven. Where to begin. I’m gonna preface this by saying that I have PTSD, and violent ideations, and anger issues, and all that. On some fronts, I can understand and relate to Steven. What I hate is how he was written. You seriously expect me to believe that the staunch pacifist and diplomat, would attempt to murder his father, White Diamond, and Jasper? The same Steven that tried to talk things out with genocidal dictators? THAT Steven? If the only reason you have is “oh he’s traumatized”, then that’s a fucking disgusting and ableist sentiment that is derived solely from mental health stigma. I GET having homicidal ideations. I GET having low impulse control. But when you set up a character as being nothing but compassionate and diplomatic throughout an entire 5 seasons and a movie, and then you suddenly have him become a murderer because “oh he’s mentally ill now”, you can see why that might rub some people the wrong way! People don’t just become murderers due to mental illness! It’s usually a combination of factors, such as environment and personality and social influence. If you think being mentally ill makes someone automatically become violent and dangerous, you are actively contributing to negative stigma about mental health. And the fact that Steven’s actual recovery is skipped over like it isn’t important is not helping.
Look, I know the show had to be rushed towards the end due to CN cancelling it, but there’s quite a line between “we couldn’t tie up all the loose ends”, and “let’s make our pacifistic protag out to be a literal fucking monster just because he’s mentally ill now!”
I know hating on SU is/was this ~edgy thing~ or whatever, but I genuinely loved the show throughout its main run even with all the writing flaws. But this awful portrayal of mental illness just makes me feel genuinely upset, especially with the amount of people defending it or otherwise acting like there’s absolutely no issues with how the show handles mental health at all.
