Andromeda in Southern Skies: Looking north from southern New Zealand, the Andromeda Galaxy never gets more than about five degrees above the horizon. As spring comes to the southern hemisphere, in late September Andromeda is highest in the sky around midnight though. In a single 30 second exposure this telephoto image tracked the stars to capture the closest large spiral galaxy from Mount John Observatory as it climbed just over the rugged peaks of the south island's Southern Alps. In the foreground, stars are reflected in the still waters of Lake Alexandrina. Also known as M31, the Andromeda Galaxy is one of the brightest objects in the Messier catalog, usually visible to the unaided eye as a small, faint, fuzzy patch. But this clear, dark sky and long exposure reveal the galaxy's greater extent in planet Earth's night, spanning nearly 6 full moons.

"Forget about enlightenment. Sit down wherever you are and listen to the wind that is singing in your veins. Feel the love, the longing, and the fear in your bones. Open your heart to who you are, right now, not who you would like to be. Not the saint you’re striving to become. But the being right here before you, inside you, around you. All of you is holy. You’re already more and less than whatever you can know. Breathe out, look in, let go."

Episode 117: The Sighting
Coming at you from the earliest parts of the 21st century comes this poem of the time the clouds hung low in the skies over my place of business and the Good Year Blimp waddles past on its way from one sporting event to another. As I say in the episode, it's one of my oldest poems that has stood the test of time - meaning I feel comfortable sharing it on the podcast and am not too terribly embarrassed by its continued existence in the world. Thus we have, "The Sighting."
You know the drill:
I want to hear what you think of the podcast, whether it's a specific poem or the format, or whatever's on your mind! Leave a review or a comment in your podcast app, or catch me on Twitter @Lefthandrob.
After listening to the podcast (or while listening), visit one of these sites and donate for the cause, because All Black Lives Matter and my fellow white (and cis) people we need to get in the game:
Donate to Black Lives Matter
Donate to the Souther Poverty Law Center
Donate to the Equal Justice Initiative
Transgender Law Center
The poems will continue to flow, but so must the Justice.

Even though it is still a part of the USA, Alaska doesn’t feel like it. Subarctic atmospheres, tidal coastlines, active volcanoes, vast wildlands, glaciers, and more than three million lakes all conspire to make it as different as a new planet from the rest of the US. Altogether, Alaska offers tourists a lot of natural beauty and personal time. BookOnBoard is bringing you the top 10 visiting places in Alaska in this article.
What do you need to know about Alaska?
Alaska is the 49th state in the USA and the largest by sheer land volume. It is 663,286 square miles of land, lakes, rivers, volcanoes, forests, and other stuff packed in a freezer. It is a rather secluded place, with only seven hundred thousand people living in the whole state. The clock here is set to 9 hours previous GMT. Located at the far north of the North American continent, it is disconnected from the rest of the USA by Canada in between them.
The capital of Alaska is Juneau. The interesting thing is, the US government bought this state from the Russian Empire. Alaska has lots of fishing industries since it has a longer coastline than the rest of the USA put together. Other than fish, you can get a lot of oil and natural gas here.
Activities in Alaska
Known mostly for its diverse open terrain and geographical features, Alaska offers an abundance of nature tourism activities. Wildlife watching, hiking, biking, kayaking, climbing, etc are the most sought after activities here. Other than that, in the more populated areas (mostly at Anchorage or souther), you can find fine dining and shopping opportunities, as well as natural and native history museums. The seas offer lots of fishing and whale watching opportunities.
Top 10 Alaska Visiting Places
Most of the places to see in Alaska are natural tourist spots, with a few man-made stuff. Your best bets will be:
Denali
Glacier Bay
Inside Passage
Mendenhall Glacier
White Pass & Yukon Railroad
Lake Clerk
Alyeska Resort
Icy Strait
Wildlife Conservation Center
Anchorage Museum
Denali
The tallest peak in North America, Denali offers tons of climbing and trekking opportunities. The surrounding area is the Denali National Park & Preserve, which offers mixed landscapes and lots of wildlife.
The highest mountain in America, Denali is located near Petersville. Your best bet to visit Denali would be to take one of the daily tourist trains from Anchorage.
Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve
Glacier Bay is a very special place in Alaska. It is a designated wilderness and biosphere reserve, and a UNESCO world heritage site. It is home to over a thousand glaciers, the most notable of which is the Grand Pacific Glacier.
A prime spot for whale watching, you can find a lot of marine mammals here. Also, if you want to watch the Northern Lights (aurora borealis), you can scarcely find a better location. Besides that, you can go hiking or kayaking here. You can, for leisure, also hang out in Gustavus.
Inside Passage
Weaving through the countless islands on the Pacific north-west coast of Alaska, the Inside Passage is a coastal route for ships. Glaciers and fjords shape up this awesome coastline with unmatched natural beauty. It is also home to many isolated wildlife communities.
Luxury and simple boat/ship cruises are the most commonly sought after activities here. You can also take on adventure and eco-tour activities like biking, bear-viewing, birding, cultural and history tours, etc. The region is a photographers’ heaven. This makes it one of the best Alaska Visiting Places.
Mendenhall Glacier
Only 12 miles south of Juneau, the Mendenhall Glacier is a protected area and a designated recreation zone. There are lots of package tours for this area, offering tons of hiking and kayaking opportunities and guided tours by coach, four-wheelers, and helicopters. The most adventurous among you should consider taking the rather dangerous hiking tours on the glacier itself.
White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad
This dainty narrow-gauge railroad links Skagway port to Whitehorse, Yukon. It is classified as a heritage railway and has vintage cars. You will go back in time, as you chug on up 3000 feet in 20 miles. Going through the breathtaking landscape and hugging hair-raising cliffhanger rail lines. There are several route options available, one of which uses an actual vintage steam locomotive.
Lake Clerk National Park & Preserve
One of the most serene places to visit in Alaska, the Lake Clerk Preserve area actually incorporates lots of lakes and streams. It is one of the best options for camping in Alaska. With its spectacular wildlands and fauna, you can also go bear watching, hiking through jungle trails, kayaking, and canoeing, fishing, biking, hunting, powerboating, birdwatching, etc. One of the nicest Alaska visiting places is the lakes and jungles here.
Alyeska Resort & Hotel Alyeska
Nestled among the beautiful Chugach mountains, the Alyeska Resort is a full-service luxury hotel, resort, and spa with exceptional dining. Few hotels around the USA offers such picture-perfect natural beauty right from your bedroom window. What’s more, it is a hub of arranging an endless variety of recreational activities. This includes glacier hiking, rafting, dog sledding, skiing, etc. One of the Alaska visiting places, this hotel also offers a tramway tour to the top of the mountain. That offers unforgettable panoramic views of the surroundings.
Icy Strait
Dividing the Alaskan mainland and Chichagof island, it is a 64 km long water passage offering spectacular marine wildlife viewing opportunities. If you take the 2.5-hour cruise through the Icy Straight, you are bound to see orcas, sea otters, seals, porpoises, and at least one majestic humpback whale. Plenty of bears, deer, bald eagles and more are found in the coastal forests as well. The Hoonah city offers cultural and brewery tours as well.
Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
Dedicated to conservation, research, education, animal care, and preserving Alaska’s wildlife. The AWCC is about 700 acres wide and offers sanctuary and comfy homes to hurt, captive-born, or exiled animals. There are many guided tours and rides through the area, on trains, coaches, safari vehicles and aircraft. You choose from any of the excursions tailor-made for each seasonal activities.
Anchorage Museum
Drink your fill of Alaskan art, history, ethnography, ecology, and science in the very heart of the most populated city in Alaska, Anchorage. Exciting exhibits adorn wall to wall in this respected building, attracting visitors throughout the year. This is one of your best options. If you want to study in-depth the land and the people of this strange and beautiful country. It is a very interesting vacation place to see in Alaska.
Tourism being one of the biggest industries in the land, Alaska has a plethora of guided tours to choose from. The most popular of them are train rides, boat cruises, and bus tours.

World Cup: What happens if India-New Zealand semifinal is washed out?
Tumblr media
Considered flat track bullies, the Indians have so far been tested only once in the ongoing World Cup in England and that was during their opening warm-up game against New Zealand in London on May 25. While the group stage encounter between the two teams got washed off, they are set to clash again and this time it will be the semi-final of the 2019 edition of the showpiece event at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Going into the tournament, the Indians were considered favourites while the Kiwis flew under the radar to start with. But as it has been the case with New Zealand when it comes to any limited-overs tournament, this time too, they have shown their mettle and walked straight into the knockouts at the fourth spot. In fact, at one stage they were leading the pack before a couple of bad games towards the end of the group stages saw them fall down the ladder slightly. But on Tuesday, the Black Caps will have to play out of their guts to challenge the Indian team that has only lost one game so far, against England in Birmingham as they failed to chase down 300-plus. Yet, the question is whether or not it will be a batting paradise. After all, the ICC has refrained from producing belters and like CEO Dave Richardson said during the game between India and England in the group stages, the idea is to bring in balance. Yet, there is forecast of rain starting Tuesday. While it may be passing showers, but then, the New Zealand attack suddenly looks all the more menacing with the likes of Boult, Lockie Ferguson, Tim Souther and Colin de Grandhomme almost looking unplayable. According to a report in the Indian Express, the match will be played the next day in case it is washed out. "If the match is washed out on Tuesday, it will be played on the following day, which is the reserve day. Unlike the group stage fixtures where a point is allotted to both the sides in case of a washout, ICC has a reserve day for both semi-finals and finals," the report said. "Unfortunately, the weather forecast for the reserve day also shows showers along with overcast conditions. If the match is washed out on the reserve day too then India will automatically qualify for the finals courtesy of accumulating the higher number of points in the group stages," the report added. In fact, Ferguson's fitness will hold the key. While the Kiwis are confident that he will last the 50 overs, it will indeed be crucial to see if he remains the force to reckon with on the field of play. Skipper Kane Williamson has made no bones about the fact that he relies on Ferguson when it comes to bowling out the opposition. For Virat Kohli, it will be about wanting to see the clear blue skies like never before. After all, New Zealand is one attack that turns a completely different picture when the conditions are overcast. Unlike the Australians and Englishmen, the Kiwis are hardcore swing bowlers. Another area of concern for the Indian skipper will be the form of the middle-order batsmen. While the team management has shown a brave face, the fact remains that most of the runs have been scored by the top three -- Kohli, Rohit Sharma and K.L. Rahul. With 647 runs from eight innings with five centuries Rohit heads the list and is followed by run-machine and Kohli with 442 runs with five fifties to his name. And third on the list is Rahul with 360 runs that includes a century and two fifties. Interestingly, the next man on the list is none other than 'under scanner' M.S. Dhoni with 223 runs. Clearly, the writing is on the wall and a massacre is waiting to happen, but the Indians feel otherwise. Clearly, even as the Indian bowling attack under Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and the spinners cuts a perfect picture, the batting in the middle needs to stand tall and get counted. While the management stuck with Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja for the last game -- against Sri Lanka -- and dropped Yuzvendra Chahal, it will be interesting to see if they continue to do that or go back to having Chahal in the XI. But a lot will definitely depend on the wicket on offer and the conditions overhead. If the cloud covers comes in, the Indians might want to play just one spinner and cement the batting further by getting someone like Mayank Agarwal into the scheme of things. Read the full article

Forecast Blog: Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019
The week ahead looks to be a rainy one for Starkville and the rest of NE Mississippi. Let’s take an extended look at the upcoming week to see what days will see some rain and what days will be dry here in Mississippi and across the country.
Tumblr media
After a cloudy and wet Saturday night, the first chance to see rain for the next week comes tomorrow afternoon for most parts of Mississippi. Accumulation of between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible in local areas throughout the day.
Parts of West Virginia could see a mix of sleet and freezing rain along the Virginia border, as well as areas in souther Indiana and Ohio. Snow looks to impact places from Montana and the Upper Plains through the upper Midwest with nearly the entire state of Iowa seeing snowfall and major cites like Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis seeing anywhere from a half to an inch to an inch of snow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rain looks to clear out for Monday which also looks to be the best day this week weather-wise. The widespread light rain over the area Sunday will move east into Alabama and Georgia. NE Mississippi will be under mostly sunny skies with high temperatures in the mid-50s. There looks to be some warm air advecting in with winds out of the southwest, helping to make things feel a bit warmer on Tuesday especially in areas where the sun is strong. Other precipitation across the country tomorrow includes rain in the Atlantic and Southeast, and snow in the Northeast and Mountain West.
Tumblr media
Rain returns on Tuesday and will be the start of consecutive days with rain. Far NW Mississippi looks to see the heaviest rain on Tuesday while NE Mississippi and the Golden Triangle look to be under mainly stratiform showers. With this continued rain, the environment will become more unstable throughout Tuesday into Wednesday. Snow for the Great Plains with some possible sleet or freezing rain in Oklahoma.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More rain on Wednesday. Widespread showers throughout the day In Mississippi with some pockets of heavier downpours at times. There is a chance Wednesday for some isolated thunderstorms to develop with this system. Vertical velocity models indicate high readings along a band of showers in NE Mississippi, leading to the better chances of thunderstorms.
With all the rain expected and the increase in rate and amount, there is a chance for flash flooding on Tuesday through Thursday from the Golden Triangle across Northern Mississippi. 3 to 6 inches of rainfall is possible with some localized higher amounts.

South Russian Skies Are Filled With Locust Swarms Of Biblical Proportions
Russia is under locust invasion and it is looking very nasty. SpaceX Makes History With 100th Rocket Launch
SpaceX had hoped to launch a pair of Falcon 9 rockets on Sunday, but weather early in the day threatened to scuttle the entire event. However, the skies cleared just in time for SpaceX to make history late in the day. The launch of the SAOCOM 1B satellite was SpaceX’s 100th and its first-ever polar orbit insertion from Florida. In fact, it was the first by anyone in decades.
Early on Sunday (August 30th), SpaceX had to scrap its planned launch of several dozen Starlink satellites. Things were looking grim until just minutes before the scheduled SAOCOM launch, but SpaceX was able to squeak by. So, SpaceX’s 100th launch carried the SAOCOM 1B satellite and a pair of smaller rideshare payload satellites into space. The company’s first launch was in March 2006, and it exploded shortly after liftoff.
SAOCOM 1B is an Earth observation satellite designed to collect radar imagery for first responders, environmental scientists, and more. SpaceX launched both SAOCOM 1A and 1B, delivering the satellites to polar orbits. A polar orbit is one in which a spacecraft orbits passing over the poles rather than nearer to the equator. This is ideal for Earth observatories like SAOCOM because a polar orbit allows the spacecraft to see the entire surface of the planet over time as it rotates.
Falcon 9 first stage lands at Landing Zone 1 to complete this booster’s fourth flight pic.twitter.com/tUtAcKmIFn
— SpaceX (@SpaceX) August 31, 2020
Getting into a polar orbit requires more energy than equatorial, and launch operators rarely attempt that from Florida. SAOCOM 1B was initially supposed to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, but the mission was delayed and ended up at Cape Canaveral. And that’s the second reason this launch was historic. The last time a mission launched from Florida into a polar orbit was 1969 when the ESSA-9 weather satellite rode into space aboard a Delta E1 rocket.
Heading for the souther polar corridor from Florida includes the possibility of flying over land shortly after launch, which is something you want to avoid. In this launch, SpaceX performed a “dog-leg” maneuver to curve around the southern part of Florida. The first stage detached before it encountered any more land, but the second stage did fly over Cuba briefly. The 45th Space Wing noted there was no danger given the second stage’s altitude, and the mission reached the desired orbit without incident. The first stage even landed safely at LZ1 in Florida. All around, a successful 100th flight.

Where to stay in Dubai depends on your budget and there is an eclectic mix of neighborhoods that will appeal to a wide range of tastes and interests.
Whether you want to explore Old Dubai’s historical neighborhoods with their museums and traditional markets; enjoy the beach resorts with their outdoor activities and water sports or window shop in the city’s malls, we have you covered.
The various emirates have long since stopped depending on oil revenues for growth, and have developed the country from a few fishing villages along coastal deserts, to an oasis where both rich and poor come to make or spend their fortune. Despite the perception that Dubai is a playground for the rich, spoilt and bored, it has developed into a forward thinking and technologically savvy city that caters for every budget.
Over the years Dubai’s public transportation has improved and become so advanced that most areas of the city are accessible via metro, tram, public water transport, bus or taxi.
Read more: The Best Time to visit Dubai (a resident’s guide)
BEST AREA TO STAY IN DUBAI
When deciding on where to stay in Dubai many first time visitors opt for the areas close to the airport they are flying into or even at a Dubai airport hotel. The neighborhoods of Old Dubai offer so many opportunities for authentic food and cultural experiences as well as the ability to walk to the nearby traditional souks. The neighborhoods of new Dubai offer a different kind of holiday filled with outdoor and beach activities.

Dubai Creek Deira and view across Bur Dubai
The Dubai Creek divides the old city of Dubai into two sections. Deira is on the northern bank of the Dubai Creek and is home to many communities who have lived here for generations. Deira is an option for budget travellers and is popular for having many of the cheapest hotels in Dubai.
The best areas to stay in Dubai and be within walking distance of the Deira souks are the Al Ras, Naif and Al Rigga neighborhoods. They have green and red line metro and bus access.

This area has enough to keep you busy for a few days with metro access to the Red line as well as adequate coverage by taxis, uber and Careem.
The area along Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Boulevard is pedestrian friendly with wide sidewalks and many cafes. However, the roads behind it still have many construction activities and it is not very pedestrian friendly. JLT is accessible via the Jumeirah Lakes Towers Metro station as well as the Damac Metro Station on the Red line.
There are many retail and dining options in every cluster but not many leisure activities or other entertainment options. The Dubai Marina and it’s leisure options are accessible via the Sheikh Zayed Road overpasses from either the JLT Metro station or the Damac Metro Station.
I lived in Cluster C for three years and the area has had many improvements since then but has also become much more insular in some ways. There is valet parking at the hotels but restricted parking at the residential buildings in the clusters.
Hotels range between 4 and 5 stars with prices starting at US$102 per night for a 4 star to US$218 per night for a 5 star hotel.
DUBAI MARINA and JUMEIRAH BEACH RESIDENCES (JBR)
Dubai Marina view
The Dubai Marina area is located around a man-made marina in the newer area of Dubai. JBR is located in the Dubai Marina neighborhood and is named after the 6 communities along The Walk / Al Mamsha Street. Over the years it has come to refer to the entire area between the JBR communities and the ocean. This area is recommended for a short or long Dubai vacation.
The Dubai Marina has completely transformed from a dusty sandpit with a handful of older beachfront hotels and the Gotham City look created by the JBR towers when I first arrived, to a thriving residential neighborhood.
There are retail, dining, entertainment and leisure activities aplenty along Marina Walk as well as in many of the residential and hotel towers.
The premier hotels in this area include The Address Hotel and Residences adjacent to the Dubai Marina Mall and the Ritz Carlton at the Walk JBR.
Hotels in Dubai Marina range between 3 and 5 stars with prices starting at US$86 per night for a 3 star to US$326 per night for a 5 star hotel.

Hotels in JBR range between 4 and 5 stars with prices starting at US$118 per night for a 4 star to US$287 per night for a 5 star hotel. Two bedroom holiday apartments range from US$200 to $817 per night.
THE BEST PLACE TO STAY IN DUBAI
The best places to stay in Dubai are those resorts, hotels and apartments that have a good balance between location, amenities, proximity to beaches, Dubai landmarks or the top attractions in Dubai. The prices may vary wildly over peak festival periods and New Year’s Eve and you are advised to book early and avoid disappointment and high prices. Many Dubai hotels have compulsory booking for their New Year’s Eve ball and this should be taken into account when deciding where to stay in Dubai.
In preparation for writing this detailed post I stayed in many types of accommodation in numerous areas between Old and New Dubai. This allowed me to experience the guest rooms, dining, amenities and customer service at different types of accommodation providers; from boutique hotels and independent operators to popular local and international chains. My stay cations were self paid, with any additional benefits or upgrades available to all other hotel guests and loyalty club members.
My requirements included:
Ground floor accommodation or an elevator to access the upper floors.
3 to 5 star hotel price per night including breakfast (because who rents a room and doesn’t give you breakfast).
Free cancellation
On site restaurants or within walking distance of eateries.
All hotels and apartments have a 24 hour front desk, and guest rooms have private bathrooms, flat screen tv’s and a desk as well as a kettle or coffee maker with refreshments.

Where to stay in Dubai – Hotels in Deira Dubai
This is the place where bargain hunters come for shopping in the souks and to experience Old Dubai at it’s grittiest. The abra stations along both sides of the Dubai creek make it easy for visitors to move between the Deira and Bur Dubai if they want to visit the historical areas.
This area is busy. Certain roads will have slow moving traffic at peak hours and the areas around the souks are especially chaotic now that there is very little street parking on the roads closer to the creek and construction sites.
Affordable: Hyatt Place Dubai / Wasl District
Hyatt Place Dubai / Wasl District is located on the main road between the Naif and Al Rigga neighborhoods, near the Fish roundabout. The closest metro is Salah al Din on the Green line.
It consists of a 202 room hotel and apartments with free internet access for guests.
The interiors and decor are modern with clean lines and there is a gym, pool and sun terrace.
There is also an on site restaurant and bar if the surrounding neighborhood eateries are not to your taste.

Deluxe: Radisson Blu Deira Dubai Creek
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
This was the first 5 star hotel in Dubai inaugurated in 1975 and is located on Baniyas Road in Deira.
The low rise building is not as flashy on the outside as the newer towers but the interiors and 288 guest rooms and suites are newly renovated and modern.
It is located on a busy road that sees high traffic volumes during peak hours but is also 400 meters away from the Union square metro station and interchange, on the Red Line, if you want to use public transport.
I had originally requested to check in between 2-3pm but when I arrived after 3:30 pm the creek view room was still not ready. The duty manager overheard the guest relations staff telling me that I would have to wait but that she didn’t know long it would be until the room would be ready. He took over my check-in and promptly upgraded my room to a Junior suite as one was available. There was no charge for the upgrade.
The suite was enormous with a king size bed, sitting area and balcony as well as a separate dressing room area adjacent to the king size bathroom. There were balconies leading from the bedroom and the bathroom (this one had a better view of the creek).
When I went down for dinner in the evening I approached the restaurant reservations desk (there are 9 restaurants in the hotel and annex). I couldn’t decide where I wanted to go for dinner and the restaurant staffer Ben, who assisted me asked if I would be interested in the hotel’s Eid dinner promotion. Over the 4 day holiday they were offered a buffet dinner that showcased all the best dishes from all of the restaurants and it sounded like a bargain I could not refuse.
When it came time to pay the server informed me that Ben was actually their manager and that he had told them to give me a 50% discount on the dinner rate.
The restaurant staff are lovely and helpful and ensured that all guest needs were attended to, including the families who had young children with dietary restrictions.
My only disappointment was with Housekeeping and the fact that the hallway to the guest rooms on the 5th floor smelled like a stale locker room. There was some kind of air blowing device apparently to help the carpets dry but that only caused the nasty smell to permeate into the guest rooms.
There is no pillow menu and the pillows on the bed were the worst I have ever slept on. A request for non-feather firm pillows brought a sullen bored looking housekeeper to my door who brought even worse ones, that I declined. I would recommend placing a request for your pillow preference at the time of booking.
The boarding area for many of the dhow cruises is across the road from the hotel. During the cooler months it will be lovely to stroll along the creek side or even down to the souks.

Where to stay in Dubai – Hotels in Bur Dubai
This is the place to stay if you want to immerse yourself in the cultural heritage and history of Dubai. Many hotels are within walking distance of the Al Fahidi historical neighborhood, museums and cultural landmarks of Bur Dubai.
Affordable: Queen Elizabeth 2 hotel on a cruise ship
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
This 13 deck floating hotel is located in the refurbished and renovated Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise liner that is permanently docked in Port Rashid. I booked a stay here for my birthday because I wanted to experience something different.
There is valet parking and self-parking available on site but it is a distance from the main road so an airport transfer, taxi or uber is recommended if you are not self-driving.
The hotel check-in area and reception is in a new custom built land based structure and has a lobby lounge and retail area.
There is a full duty free section in the ship where guests can purchase chocolates, nuts, gifts as well as jewelry and other luxury goods.
A porter will assist with carrying the luggage to the guest room and also explains how to navigate around the ship. A few of the recreation areas and eateries were closed during the summer but will re-open for the peak season in the cooler months.
The internal construction on the lower levels of the ship was still underway during my visit but did not cause any noise or disturbance.
My Deluxe guest room with sea view was very spacious and the AC inaudible, although the room was always fresh smelling and the perfect temperature to be comfortable during summer.
There are narrow elevators as well as stairs to all the decks. Certain elevators don’t go to all the levels as I found when I wanted to go back to my room from the duty free section.
I enjoyed the marina and ocean view at breakfast and dinner in the all day dining restaurant as well as at afternoon tea in the Yacht Club.
There are historic heritage tours held on the ship at various times during the day and are free for hotel guests. All you have to do to take the tour is go to the meeting point 10 minutes before the start.
If you have ever yearned to take a sea or river cruise then this is a good way to try out whether you are able to handle the sense of confinement. I didn’t realize how much of a landlubber I was until I imagined myself unable to move from the boat onto dry land for any amount of time.

Deluxe: Al Seef Heritage Hotel
Al Seef is a newly redeveloped lifestyle destination featuring a hotel, 90 dining and 350 retail options on the same side of the Dubai Creek and lying just east of the Al Fahidi district.
The Al Seef Heritage Hotel has a unique decentralized hotel design and is in the style of an old Arabian village with houses, retail areas, squares and outside entertainment. The development is walk-able and the hotel also offers rides on their golf carts to and from the restaurants, cafes and bars.
190 guest rooms of the Al Seef Heritage hotel are grouped across the development in 22 low rise multi-story bayts or traditional the Arabian villas, and each guest room has it’s own entrance around a common courtyard or hallway. A security guard is stationed at the ground level reception area of each bayt to ensure that only registered guests access the upper floors.
The guest rooms are not enormous but they have comfortable beds and the attention to detail in the furniture and fittings is something else. The Souk View rooms don’t have much of a view so a Creek View room is recommended.
There is no gym or swimming pool but guests receive free tickets to the Laguna Water Park at La Mer.
My favorite dinner here was at Kim’s Singapore Seafood restaurant in phase 3 of the development, where the off-menu Seafood laksa recommended by the manager was so good I wanted to lick the bowl.

Deluxe: Vida Downtown
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
This hotel is located in the Old Town district of Downtown a few blocks away from Dubai Mall and is part of the local Emaar hotels brand. It was previously known as the Qamardeen hotel before re-branding as a family friendly urban business hotel.
It is within walking distance to Dubai Mall and there are numerous eateries along that strip of road. Regrettably at the time of my stay in summer they did not offer any complimentary shuttles to Dubai Mall and the Heritage tram was not operational.
The design of this urban boutique hotel is reminiscent of an Arabian palace with an entrance that is light and airy and feels very welcoming.
Ultra-modern guest rooms range from Deluxe suites to two bedroom Boulevard Suites and there is a swimming pool and fitness center for guest use.
I stayed in a Junior suite and it was enormous but still homey, with Nespresso coffee maker as well as flat screen tv’s in the living room and bedroom.
There is a courtyard where the outdoor swimming pool and covered cabanas are located.
The hotel has the 3in1 on site restaurant on the ground floor, the Stage2 lobby lounge and bar as well as the La Serre French bistro and boulangerie that are attached and accessible from the veranda.
There is also a mosque located behind the hotel and adequate sound insulation to keep out any street noise.
This may not be the most expensive hotel in Dubai or the most flashy but it was the one that I enjoyed staying in the most. I love the atmosphere and ambiance of the hotel’s modern interiors, well lit public spaces and guest rooms and find the subdued muted colors very calming.

Dubai Marina Hotels
The Dubai Marina is the place to be for entertainment, outdoor living and leisure activities in New Dubai. I lived in this area when I first moved to Dubai and at that time the only buildings were a few of the older hotels on the beach front and a few towers on Al Marsa Street (Dubai Marina Road). There was no public transport to the area except for Dubai taxis. Now there are two metro links, a tram line as well as bus services throughout the Marina.
Affordable: Marina Byblos Hotel
The Marina Byblos hotel is located near to the JLT metro station access and a tram station in Dubai Marina. It is within walking distance to Marina Walk and JBR.
There are 184 guest rooms and suites that are decorated in a beachy modern style and have city or marina views.

The Address Dubai Marina hotel and Dubai Marina Mall are part of the Emaar brand and has special offers and seasonal discounts throughout the year.
The hotel is adjacent to the Mall and the construction of the hotel, residences and mall kick-started the development of the Dubai Marina neighborhood 14 years ago.
There are 200 guest rooms and suites as well as 442 serviced residences all decorated in calming neutrals.
There is a spa and fitness center as well as an outdoor swimming pool.
The hotel is very popular with couples and families and on weekends has themed brunches for children in the Mazina all day dining restaurant. There are two further restaurants, a lobby lounge and a poolside bar and restaurant.
There is direct access to the Dubai Marina Mall from the hotel with many more dining options and an array of cuisines. The Marina Walk is accessible from the hotel and there are also numerous food trucks and entertainment activities for children.
This hotel is located near to the Dubai Marina pick up points for many dhow cruises, the Dubai water taxi and other waterborne excursions.
Those wanting an urban zipline experience can walk over to the mall to buy tickets and enjoy the experience zipping between the towers and across the marina.
The hotel is within walking distance to JBR and The Beach Mall but if you don’t feel like walking there is also a tram station right opposite the mall main entrance.
The Constellation Ballroom offers one of the best iftars during Ramadan and it is one we often go to for work functions and team building. It was also my late mother’s favorite Dubai iftar.
I had reserved a Deluxe Marina View King room but when I checked in at 3:30 pm it was not yet ready. Without skipping a beat the lovely guest relations associate assigned a Grand Room Marina View that had a separate living area with flat screen tv and a small balcony with table and chairs.

Best Beach hotels in Dubai
Affordable: Park Regis Boutique Hotel
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
This independent boutique hotel is a stone’s throw from the Umm Suqeim Public Beach and opposite the beach park, and really is a bargain of a lifetime.
There are only 21 guest rooms over 3 levels and the decor is neutral with pops of color.
There is no pool or gym although it is a short walk to the beach as well as Wild Wadi Water park.
The hotel has an on-site urban Balkan restaurant where guests can take their breakfast and offers many Balkan and Eastern European specialities. I must confess that I was very surprised at the quality and spread of the breakfast because it was generous and very delicious despite being a set menu.
I will recommend the 21 Grams restaurant for breakfast, lunch or dinner even if you are just having a day out at the beach. For a detailed review and more independent breakfast restaurants in Dubai please check out the Favorite Breakfast spots in Dubai from my fellow expats Nancy and Namrata at She Said, She Said.
I waited a few minutes at check-in for them to confirm that the guest room was actually ready and was presented with a glass of sparkling fruit juice to refresh and revitalise.
To make up for the wait, I was moved to a higher floor and a guest room with a big terrace with table and chairs. The average size rooms are very modern and airy with a beachy feel to the interiors and decor.
The mini-bar with complimentary juices, nuts, potato crisps and date cookies were a nice touch and much appreciated, especially since this is a small independent hotel.

Luxury: Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort and Spa:

The Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort and Spa is located on the outer frond of the Palm Jumeirah and is an expansive resort consisting of a hotel and hotel apartments.
The resort has a Polynesian theme and feels like a tropical paradise from the moment you enter the grounds. All guests have access to the hotel’s private beach.
The front access security officer Apollonia, the porters and other service staff welcomed me with such enthusiastic and sincere greetings that I could not help but smile.
My Luxury Room with King Bed was spacious and comfortable and had a very big bathroom / toilet and shower area.
The guest rooms range from Classic rooms with king beds to Two Bedroom Opera Suites and come with a mini-bar and bose station in addition to the flat-screen tv and refreshment station.
I would recommend rooms with resort or Palm views because the sea view rooms overlook the main road and unless you are on high floor you won’t actually have any sea view.
There are 16 dining establishments including a steakhouse, two all day dining restaurants, as well as French, Italian and Asian options. In addition, there are also outdoor bars and eateries near the beach. The three pools and children’s play areas are also in close proximity.
There is an onsite So Spa with twenty eight treatment rooms, a  high tech So Fit gym as well as tennis courts.
There were two things that I loved at this hotel aside from the family friendly ambiance and wonderful tropical resort feel inside and out. The first was the fact that they exhibit the works of local artists and the art is for sale. The second was the incredible living green wall with 170 types of plants.

Anacortes
The rains came in just enough to rid us of our pollen problem and left just in time to give sunny skies all day today. We left Anacortes and headed out into the San Juan islands for quite an adventure. We headed down Rosario strait briefly before tucking into Burrows bay where we found a feeding gray whale. The whales markings did not match any markings we have seen before and so we could tell this gray whale was one of our newcomers for the 2019 feeding season. After many great looks we continued south toward Deception pass. As we cruised we saw a few harbor seals and porpoise before we got to tuck into the pass and cruise under Deception pass bridge. We found a few bald eagles fishing in the pass as we went through and then headed down into Saratoga pass where we joined up with the T65’s at Onamac point. They had just finished 2nd or 3rd lunch and it had a few of the members very energetic. While we were on scene with these giants of the deep we got a few spy hops and a number of breaches from the younger whales in the pod!!! It was an “out of this world” show and the weather conditions only helped to amplify the beauty and majesty of our orca friends. Sadly time ran out and we had to wave goodbye to these active orca whales and return to the north. We passed a large log raft being pulled by a tug boat on our way home and the logs were covered in harbors seals taking a free ride to La Conner. We then cruised up under Deception pass bridge once again taking in the beauty of the area and being blown away by the insane currents pushing through the pass. We took a wide swing into souther Rosario strait to see if any other whales were stirring in the area before finishing our perfect trip in Anacortes!!!

Totaled other driver's car. My rear end is completely crumpled, but still drivable. I haven't got it checked yet, waiting for the police to contact me in a couple days. Will Hillary's Plans to End the War and Create an Affordable Health Plan Work?
Hilary thinks things through. She's pragmatic and capable of modifying things to work in an evolving world. She understands the give and take of a complex economy and her goal is to restore peace and prosperity; unity and pride. Whenever I hear an Obama supporter claim Obama will end the war or deliver a health insurance plan that works I think -- Don't bet on it. Obama tries to copy Hillary, but doesn't understand the complexities at the level she does, not does he seem consistent about anything. He's also more in the pocket of Special interests than Hillary -- though he denies that all the time -- not good. I have utmost confidence that Hillary is brilliant and dedicated and knows how to create solutions that work. The things she talks about, are what she will deliver, you can see that by observing her voting record. Hillary does what she says she will do, that's why I trust Hillary. Hillary '08""
What to do when switching car insurance?
I am planning on switching car insurance providers b/c: 1.) My car got stolen 01/25/2013 and I only had liability coverage (car was a 1996 Nissan Maxima) 2.) I was hit in October 2012 and it was not my fault and received settlement money b/c my car was deemed a total loss 3.) With that money I put a down payment on a used car this past weekend b/c now I truly had no car 4.) I now need full coverage to my current policy and replace the old car with the newer one but the 6-month premium is too high. While shopping around for car insurance, I found an auto quote that was A LOT more affordable than if I were to stick with my current insurance. With that being said, I had a lot of questions. I got into a car accident in May 2012 and it was my fault. No one was hurt and no air bags deployed. My insurance paid the damages. Now, if I cancel my policy with them, does that mean that I have to pay the insurance company back the money for the damages they covered to the other car? My other question is how much information do I disclose when applying for a new auto policy? I have of course included the at-fault accident in May and I also included the accident that was not my fault. Before these 2 accidents, I had one just one that was in a parking lot. The other driver and I were deemed both at fault, 50/50. Damage to his car was around $700. That was 3 years ago. The insurance company I was looking into said online to include accidents that were at least 51% your fault and accidents that weren't your fault too. Do I include this accident too even tho it was 50/50? My last question is about speeding and points. I my first speeding ticket in June 2012. I got a reduced fine and went to traffic school so it wouldn't show up and get a point. Once again, while looking at auto quotes, they asked if I had a moving violation which includes speeding. Because I went to traffic school and everything, do I tell them about that too? Despite the bad luck I've had this past year with my driving record, I only have one point. The 50/50 accident will be off because it's the 3rd year. I live in CA and got this info from the DMV website: The length of time depends on the severity of the offense. Most points (illegal turn, not making a complete stop, driving over the speed limit, etc.) and/or accidents will stay on your driver record for 36 months (3 years). I've included the link: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/teenweb/more_btn6/points/points.htm Any advice and suggestions is greatly appreciated! Thanks!""

Is it true that if you buy a brand new car the car insurance will be much more than a second hand car?
Why?? I'm going to buy the very first car for me (a mazda 3 hatchpack 2006 or 2008..) and I want it to be new cause I can afford any price. But my dad keeps telling me not to buy a new car cause i won't be having good bennefits from it..such as the car insurance. It will be higher than a second hand car's...around 1000 euros every year. Why do most people try to scare young drivers with large insurance costs?
I am a responsible teen. Why do some people try to tell me I'm not? I hate generalization.

How much will the Insurance cost me for A 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse ?
I am 17, and I was thinking about my first car, and I've been doing some research and I love the Mitsubishi Eclipse and I can afford to buy one since $1000-9000 is in my price range, I found a perfect 1999 Black Mitsubishi Eclipse is great condition for $6,999, but since I'm a new driver insurance will not be easy but I don't want to take full coverage I just want PiP. Anyone that works at an insurance company that could help or anyone who knows how insurance works answer my question.
