Less-than-epic customer support at Epic Pass
It takes genuine talent and creativity for a company to surprise me with novel customer-experience failures in three different channels.
An attempt to trim the cost of a couple of days of local skiing by paying in advance wound up inflicting me with time and annoyance charges, and now I’ve learned some things about how a company can trip over itself at customer support–online, over the phone and in its app. This all started after last winter, when an overdue resumption of downhill skiing led me to buy new skis and boots, what I…

Uncovering the unreleased Far Cry 5 in-game Encyclopedia
The almost complete but unused in-game encyclopedia, reconstructed thanks to the oasisstrings file.
Please note that it’s still cut content, so some information might not be relevant anymore.
You can read the oasisstrings file here. Pictures from this encyclopedia were also extracted and posted by @xbaebsae here.
Part 4: Locations - Henbane River
Tanami Residence
Some idiot drove a dredge into Roy Tanami's property, damaging his bunker beyond repair. Out of options, Tanami swallowed his pride and joined the Whitetail Militia up north.
Vasquez Residence
Home of Mr. Vasquez, former employee of Nolan's Fly Shop.
Hollyhock Saloon
One of the first businesses to fall to Eden’s Gate when they banned alcohol in the county. No one knows if the owners moved or were taken.
Can of Worms Fishing Store
Rods and tackle a-plenty. Owned by Sherri Woodhouse, who does salvage runs for sunken treasure in her spare time.
Deep North Water Treatment Plant
Built in 2002 to treat the toxic water from decades of mining practices. Today, Eden’s Gate uses it to disperse Bliss into the water.
Misty River Gas
A local gas station by the water, owned by Mr. McDevitt.
McCoy Cabin
Home of Darby McCoy who joined the cult against his will. This cabin is both close to the water and the Misty River Gas, an ideal spot for the cult to run operations.
Peaches Taxidermy
Mable's a rough-edged taxidermist. She lives here with her pet cougar.
Barlow Residence
Residence of Dr. Phil Barlow. He was a pharmacist who joined Eden’s Gate.
McClean Residence
Residence of Travis McClean. He was a former Air Force veteran turned prepper. Like so many others, he and his husband are on the run from Eden's Gate.
Eden’s Gate Outreach Center
This was once a place to learn more about Eden’s Gate and the Father’s message. Nothing out of the ordinary, until it became what it is today.
The Pillars of Eden
An outdoor amphitheater and a place of worship for Eden's Gate.
Drubman Marina
The Drubman Marina began in 1992 as an oil sands prospecting venture. Hurk Drubman Sr. became rich, but ost the property in a divorce to his wife Adelaide. She has big dreams for the place.
Silver Lake Campgrounds
A place to camp with a nice view of the mountains, the water, and the Whitetail Mountain Rail Bridge.
Silver Lake Summer Camp
An old summer camp. It was forced out of business by Eden’s Gate about 8 years ago. The cult used this place to stockpile their goods while their bunkers were being built.
Howling Cave
A well-known wolf habitat. The cult frequently takes animals from here and sends them north to Jacob.
Taft Lookout Tower
An old firewatch tower built in 1945. The cult uses it as a checkpoint and surveillance location. As expected, it is heavily guarded at all times.
Raptor Peak
A mountain peak that's a favorite nesting spot for birds of prey.
Camp Cougars
The Resistance has set up a camp to use as a base of operations for attacks against the cult and rescue missions for those on the pilgrimage path.
Dire Wolf Basin
A smoking basin that Eden's Gate has claimed as their own. Also a place of worship for the cult.
Sabre-Tooth Springs
These hot springs and the nearby cave used to be a tourist destination. It's right next to a road, meaning this location spent little in advertising. Today, it only attracts the cult.
Eden’s Convent
The very first building set up by the Project at Eden’s Gate in Hope County. People came here for spiritual retreats and to learn the Word of Joseph. When they left, if they did, it was with a permanent smile on their faces.
Sacred Skies Youth Camp
Formerly a Christian youth camp that was shut down fifteen years ago when the population dwindled. Eden’s Gate quietly bought it ten years ago. They use the land for growing Bliss flowers while living on-site.
Joseph’s Word
A statue of Joseph Seed that was constructed almost overnight. It commemorates the Father bringing his Word to the world. It also houses a rare, one-of-a-kind manuscript that is sacred to Eden's Gate.
Purpletop Antenna
Eden's Gate controls the radio towers. There's no signal but Joseph's Word out here.
Dead Man’s Mill
A water mill left over from the gold rush heyday. Everyone in Hope County has a different version of how it got its name, but the most popular story is a man's suicide after the closure of the mines.
Mastodon Geothermal Park
A tourist attraction established in 1836. People used to come here to admire the unique geological landscape. Now Eden's Gate uses it as an execution site.
Chan Residence
Back in the day, the owner of the Sacred Skies Youth Camp lived here. The cabin now belongs to Jasmine Chan, a big game hunter who was recruited into Eden's Gate against her will.
Counselor’s Cabin
This used to be the counselor's cabin when the Sacred Skies Youth Camp was in operation.
Nature Cabin
It once belonged to the Sacred Skies Youth Camp. Kids would come here to learn about animals, or rest after hurting themselves on the nearby zip line.
Throne of Mercy Church
A gold rush era church run by Jerrod Wilson, a preacher and rival of Emmet Reaves in the late 1800s. The church survived until about ten years ago when the cult closed it down.
Administrator’s Cabin
This used to be the administrator's cabin when the Sacred Skies Youth Camp was in operation.
Boshaw Manor
The humble dwelling of Charlemagne Victor Boshaw IV, gentleman fire enthusiast.
King’s Hot Springs Hotel
Once a spot for the posh to "take the waters," a landslide triggered by an earthquake in 1917 closed it temporarily and made it a ghost hunter's gem. It reopened, only to close again in 1994. Eden's Gate has put it to good use.
Moonflower Trailer Park
Once the fanciest trailer park in Montana run by the Boshaws. When the economy dried up and the Boshaws did nothing to retain their tenants, people relocated to the Silver Lake trailer park in the Holland Valley.
Sinclair Residence
Frankie Sinclair dreamed of being a world class French chef. Only problem? He couldn't speak a lick of French. He worked at the King's Hot Springs Hotel until it closed in 1994.
Horned Serpent Cave
A sulfur cave that's part of the volcanically active landscape of the region. It was once an industrial site, but the cult has turned it into a mass grave for Angels who can serve the project no more.
Henbane River Station
Copperhead Rail was created in the late 1800s by Emmet Reaves. It was shut down in the early 70s after the last of the local mining industries dried up. This station has been abandoned ever since.
Grimalkin Radon Mine
Once a part of a radon spa chain, it shut down in the 60s. Guy Marvel fell in love with the aesthetic and figured it’d be the perfect place for his next movie masterpiece.
Lydia’s Cave
In 1912, some loggers saw a girl eating a goat with wolves. She was captured in this cave and brought to a doctor who named her Lydia. She escaped and was last seen deep in the wilds suckling two wolf cubs.
Whistling Beaver Brewery
This brewery and pub opened in the late 1880s. It closed in 1916-1918 for Prohibition and reopened in the 30s. Pushed out of the national market by artisanal beer, the brewery was struggling and quietly sold to Eden's Gate.
The Misery
A dredge that belonged to the Catamount Mining Company. When the mines dried up, they tried to get gold from the riverbeds, but failed and abandoned it. The Resistance tells horror stories about what goes on there now.
Faith’s Gate
A bunker under Faith's guardianship. It is shrouded in Bliss, ensuring that those who are sheltered here will not be frightened when the Collapse comes.
Feeney Residence
Home of Dwight Feeney, a prepper and chemistry aficionado who joined Eden’s Gate when they promised him an important role in the creation of Bliss.
Eden’s Altar
A place of worship for Eden’s Gate. The faithful gather to hear sermons about Joseph’s visions and plans.
Gethsemane Greenhouse
A building used to precisely control the growing conditions of plants. Whatever these plants were before, they are now Bliss flowers.
Lorna’s Truck Stop
Lorna Rawlings used her BINGO winnings to create the best place for hard-working truckers like her husband to refresh and refuel. The cult came to take the place. She said no. She hasn’t been seen since.
Henbane River Chalets
A tourist trap that was shut down by the cult. The lake view was also sought after as a filming location.
Aubrey’s Diner
One of the first places to close when the cult took over. Their grilled cheese was no good.
O’Hara’s Haunted House
A professional clown named Edward O'Hara bought a barn and turned it into a haunted house that was a Halloween tradition in Hope County. Edward himself disappeared, and people disagree on whether or not the cult got him.
Ghost Cat Mine
The old mine has been closed for decades but the headframe warehouse is still there, used by the cult to store their containers of Bliss.
The Last Best Resting Place
An old, overgrown graveyard left from the gold rush era.
Jones Residence
Home of Kanti Jones, a Blackfoot woman and ranger who used to work in Whitetail Park. She was forced into retirement when the park closed. She fought against Eden’s Gate, dying in a shootout in her home.
Nelson Residence
Home of Coyote Nelson. He tried to lay low and enjoy fishing and painting but his peaceful pastimes didn't save him.
8-Bit Pizza Bar
The presence of pizza and an arcade made this the most exciting spot for teens within a hundred miles.
Pepper Residence
Holly Pepper and her girlfriend Charlie were among the first locals to join Eden's Gate. They abandoned this house and were never heard from again. The cult turned the property into a grow op.
Hope County Jail
20 years ago, a riot caused a jail break and a bus full of escaped prisoners ran off the road somewhere in Holland Valley. Later on, the prison closed due to budget cuts. Today, the Cougar resistance takes shelter here.
Nolan’s Fly Shop
Nolan Pettis ran his fly shop and gave fishing tours happily for years, although he was never a famous outdoorsman like local celebrity Skylar Kohrs. The money for his shop dried up and he joined Eden’s Gate.
Johnson Residence
Bob and Penny Johnson struck it rich in cattle futures, then they lost everything. After such a fall from grace, Joseph’s cult seemed welcoming. They handed everything over. No one knows where they are now.
Bright Warden Radon Spa
A health spa shut down in the 60s. Eden’s Gate has been spotted going in and out of this mine, using it as a storage facility.
Prosperity
Founded by rail and lumber baron Emmett Reaves. As the industry dried up, the town died and people moved west to Fall’s End. What remains of the ghost town is now used by junkies and the homeless.
Abercrombie Residence
Home of Melvin Adams Abercrombie. He robbed a bank in the 1940s and got away with it. He used his money to build this property and to prepare for the total collapse of the global financial system.
McCallough’s Garage
Once owned by Steve McCallough. He tried to warn everyone about Eden’s Gate, and even had a getaway car and some supplies ready. One day, his shop got boarded up and Steve was nowhere to be found.
Jessop Conservatory
Dr. Rachel Jessop created this place to protect and research at-risk flora and fauna. After budget cuts gutted her funding, Eden's Gate bought her out and devoted the facilities to developing potent strains of Bliss flowers.
Harrison Lookout Tower
One of the towers built in the 1940s to spot forest fires. It was abandoned ten years ago when funding ran out and the cult bought the property. It overlooks the site of one of Clutch Nixon's legendary stunts.
Seeley’s Cabin
Residence of Dwight Seeley. He worked in the local mines and then got kicked out of his place when the cult took over.
Deer Tiger Mine
Established in 1912, this mine was closed down in the 70s. Eden’s Gate appears to use it for storage.
Puma Mine
Another relic of a bygone gold rush, the Puma Mine has been abandoned for decades.
Ancient Bison Tunnel
A closed-off tunnel. No one gets in. No one gets out.

First post on this god given account woop woop
Tbh, I was thinking of how the deputy gets the entirety of Hope County liberated in what seems to be a week/month. Imagine if each region took a different season.
Imagine trekking through the Whitetail Mountains in the winter. Imagine the blood that gives the white landscapes just a hint of color as its scattered on the peaks and hills. Judges, with their white fur, blend in near perfectly.
Imagine how GORGEOUS the Henbane would look in the autumn. The red and orange hues of the trees giving a near surreal and dream-like feel to add on to how the Bliss flowers fuck with you. You're unsure if you hear the crisp autumn breeze blowing through the leaves or if that's Faith's singing and taunting.
Holland Valley in the summer is an almost unreal shade of green. Its half nostalgic seeing the planes whisk through the bright blue skies as you travel through the small hills and across the farm fields. It would also make a perfect premise for the Testicle Festival!
And finally confronting Joseph in his compound come springtime. How ironic, that the season that promises new beginnings and the Earth blooming is the same time that the nukes hit. One moment, the trees are finally regaining their leaves and the icy cold ground is returning to its soft fresh blades of grass and budding wildflowers, and then the next it's all ashen and flames.
I dunno. Its fun to think about

OC Tattoo Tag!
i wasn't tagged by anyone but wanted to bring this back and see some tattoo shit!!! yall know i love that ink, sending some tags tooooo @dumbassdep @socially-awkward-skeleton @the-silver-chronicles @inafieldofdaisies @voidika @cassietrn @simonxriley @strangefable @pierrotguru @deputyash and anyone else who'd like to do it!
Tumblr media
Does your OC have any tattoos? If not, do they want any?
he does! ro has 3 tattoos at the moment, he's big on having meaning behind his ink so he doesn't have any prospective ideas at the moment, just is content with what he's got.
If the answer to both questions above is ‘no’, does your OC enjoy the aesthetic of tattoos? If not, is there a reason why?
n/a
How does your OC act while they’re getting a tattoo? Do they grit their teeth and deal with the pain, do they need something to hold onto while getting inked, ect.?
roman is a typical tough guy so he grins and bears the pain no matter how it affects him. and he doesn't take breaks either, he wouldn't allow himself that.
Would your OC ever get a face or hand tattoo?
honestly yes to both! he doesn't have either at the moment, but wouldn't be opposed as long as it was important him.
List any of their tattoos/prospective tattoos below! Feel free to add any meaning they may have!:
roman has a chest piece of a gladiator fighting off a lion, similar to the pic below! this to him signifies his life and how it's been an uphill battle, sometimes seemingly to a higher power's amusement. but he will make something of himself no matter what. shortly after joining eden's gate, ro got a brand of the cross on his left shoulder blade. moving to montana was a big change for him and a commitment to making a better life for himself, this is to represent that. and finally he has a pair of boxing gloves tatted on his right inner arm! this is to honor the time he spent as a semi-professional boxer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Does your OC have any tattoos? If not, do they want any?
ronnie has 4 tattoos at the moment, and definitely wants more! she believes her body is a canvas to be painted with whatever she likes
If the answer to both questions above is ‘no’, does your OC enjoy the aesthetic of tattoos? If not, is there a reason why?
n/a
How does your OC act while they’re getting a tattoo? Do they grit their teeth and deal with the pain, do they need something to hold onto while getting inked, ect.?
loooots of deep breaths lmao, veru also prefers to have a friend alongside to hold her hand so she can squeeze through the pain lol
Would your OC ever get a face or hand tattoo?
hand tattoo definitely, she already has one! face tattoo, probably not!
List any of their tattoos/prospective tattoos below! Feel free to add any meaning they may have!:
v's first official tattoo would be the outline of the whitetail mountains on her left forearm! it just felt right, like the mountains were towering above to protect her and she wanted to memorialize that. she has a little bushel of lilacs on her ankle, it reminds her of her grandmother's garden. on ronnie's middle finger she has a stick and poke she did herself at 14 of devil horns, perfect to flip the world off when you're an angry teenager lol and finally a tattoo that veronica got on her 21st birthday, she was out with joey and a few other friends and after some barhopping she decided it was tattoo time! one of the artists there had a sheet of drawings they'd made and were offering, and this duck with a ski mask made her laugh so hard she peed a little. so she got it on her thigh!

I was at my parents this weekend and there were signs of autumn’s coming arrival everywhere!
The acorns are growing large this year. The leaves are already starting to change vibrant colors. The antlers on the whitetail deer are coming in big. The skies are over cast. The weather is calling for flannel…
and it’s time for gray sweatpants!
I’m ready for autumn!

@coachsandybatten and I were able to squeeze in one last, final kayak at Wolf Lake this morning before coming home. And what an eventful journey! Gorgeous cloudy skies broken up by blazing beams of sunshine were perfect 🥰 We started with a big Dock Spider 🕷 running from underneath one of our boats! Yes I jumped! It's almost a big as my hand! In a quiet bay, we found a Painted Turtle stunning itself on a stump but then the craziness began! We spotted something that I thought was a log at first .. then I noticed ears and right it was a dog. Either way, it was too far from shore! Sandy and I paddled over and discovered it was a Whitetail fawn, only a 3-4 months old at best. We shadowed it from a safe distance to make sure it didn't drown and guided it towards shore, where it popped out of the water, shook itself dry and then bounced up and away into the woods. When we turned around, a Common Loon was right there floating around. One last picture on the dock and then we were packing and loading. Check my story for how we really felt about leaving! #wildlifephotos #swimmingdeer #landscapephotography #landscapephotos #hdrphotography #wolflake #apsley #northkawartha #ontario #outdoors #perceptionkayak #onthewater #vacationlife #cottagelife #thisisthelife #idontwannagohome (at Wolf Lake, Kawarthas, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfunSfZJWG_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

( @kenneld ) in the driver’s seat, ashley sits—one hand gripping the steering wheel, white-knuckled, as the other wrestles a crumpled pack of cigarettes from his breast pocket. this here’s whitetail territory—different than the desert skies, yet his state of mind’s no different. this, to ashley, was not about the faith, nor the resistance of the people. this was about men in power giving orders—this was about his sainthood and the worship it demanded; the sacrifice. cherry glow. puff of smoke.   “ all the good angels are mobbin’ us with warnings. ”

Exploration of the now-offline Far Cry 5 official websites
Part 6: The Resistance
Recovered content
The Resistance was introduced as follows on the American website on or before July 13th, 2017:
Tumblr media
THE RESISTANCE HOPE COUNTY RESISTANCE Throughout the hills, valleys, and townships of Hope County, civilians of all walks have joined forces to resist against the cult, and rid their land of its chaos once and for all.
And, like for the cult, a more detailed description was available further down on the page:
Tumblr media
HOPE COUNTY RESISTANCE THE RESISTANCE Comprised of everyday townsfolk from Holland Valley to the more self-sufficient reisdents spread throughout the Whitetail Mountains, every member of The Resistance has one thing in common: They want Hope County back. And they'll use every tool at their disposal to ensure Joseph Seed is giving his next sermon from the grave.
When the appearance of the website was modified, on or before February 9th, 2018, the description of the Resistance slightly was as well (and the typo was corrected):
Tumblr media
THE RESISTANCE From the everyday townspeople of Holland Valley to the more self-sufficient residents spread throughout the Whitetail Mountains, every member of The Resistance has one thing in common: They want Hope County back. And they’ll use every tool at their disposal to ensure Joseph Seed is giving his next sermon from the grave.
The information box previously titled Hope County Resistance became Holland Valley Resistance, and the description written in the box was the same as the general, introductory one above.
Tumblr media
HOLLAND VALLEY RESISTANCE THE RESISTANCE From the everyday townspeople of Holland Valley to the more self-sufficient residents spread throughout the Whitetail Mountains, every member of The Resistance has one thing in common: They want Hope County back. And they’ll use every tool at their disposal to ensure Joseph Seed is giving his next sermon from the grave.
In the same section, there was also a general description of the Guns for Hire:
Tumblr media
GUNS FOR HIRE GUNS FOR HIRE Your posse comes in all shapes, sizes, and species. To help aid in your campaign against The Project at Eden's Gate, call upon other Resistance fighters from the towns to the forests to the blue skies of Hope County. Some of these fighters even have fangs.
Then, each Gun and Fang for Hire had their own information box, which I will talk about in the next posts.
The page disappeared on or after February 7th, 2020.
Commentary
Those descriptions didn’t go through a lot of significant modifications, and the title of the information box changing from Hope County Resistance to Holland Valley Resistance can simply be explained by the fact the only allies present in the picture and on the website (aside from the Guns and Fangs for Hire) were Mary May and Jerome. What the texts say still seems accurate to me.
Under the cut are all the available source files, saved directly from the website, of the images you see in the screenshots:

11 - heartbeat for my faves Charlie and John? 👀
Your wish is my command, Mika 💕 And I added the angst and fluff you wanted to see me write. This is just a very self-indulgent piece. It’s one of the first times I mixed both together, so please don’t be too harsh.
Tumblr media
Prompt: Heartbeat
Words: 1.5 k (I know this was only supposed to be a drabble or a head canon! Sorry!)
Warnings: Mentions of violence, possible death, spoilers for future parts of my fics. This is pre-established relationship/domesticated Charlie x John.
Joseph had always told Charlie that one day she would have to choose; that she couldn’t sit on the sidelines as Sadie and the Seeds waged a war against each other. Today was that day.
She had recently released both her cousin and Hudson from John’s bunker, begging the deputies to leave them alone. But neither the Baptist or her cousin could resist the fight.
Watching two of the people she loved the most dogfight over the skies filled her with dread, a sinking feeling that keeps growing in the pit of her stomach.
You have to make a choice. Joseph’s words reverberate through her head as she watches the planes swoop and dive around each other, aimless shots fired every few seconds.
Charlie sighs. She knows what she has to do. Lifting up her rifle, she climbs onto the top of the Jeep she rode in with her chosen to try to stop John from forcing half of Fall’s End to atone.
The bright yellow plane comes into view of her scope. She can’t help the tears that flow down her cheeks, but she pulls the trigger nevertheless; the force of the shot jerking her back.
The plane swan dives to the ground in a fiery blaze; the boom of the impact causing the earth beneath them to shake. It’s almost beautiful Charlie thinks as she watches the flames take hold.
Hopping off of the roof, the brunette jumps in the backseat. “Go, go, go,” she says with a smack to the arm of the driver.
It takes the chosen less than a minute to reach the field where Affirmation had landed. Unfortunately, both the plane and John took hits, the latter lying in the grass just mere inches away.
Charlie and the others run to the bleeding man, immediately trying to assess the seriousness of the situation.
“We need to take him to Jacob.”
Taking John to the Henbane doesn’t seem like the safest option. As much as Charlie hopes Sadie is alive, she knows she’ll head straight to Faith if she is. And she can’t have the two of them in the same place again, no matter how injured they are.
Charlie cradles a barely conscious John to her chest the entire, long ride to the Whitetails. His pulse fluctuates and she tries her best not to panic. “Please don’t leave me,” she leans forward to whisper just for him to hear. The plea comes out more desperate than she would like, her voice cracking with each word, and she hopes he won’t remember this if he lives.
Jacob meets them outside his armory with a team of what looks to be medics. For the first time since she’s known the man he looks proud of her; proud that she would kill her own blood to protect his.
“Didn’t think you had it in ya,” the ginger says with a clap to her shoulder.
Charlie shrugs, she didn’t think she had it in her either and she’s not sure that she likes knowing exactly what she’s capable of.
“I just-please just don’t let him die.”
She waits with Jacob in the hallway outside the med bay until the nurses leave the room. Charlie doesn’t bother to wait for their approval before shoving her way in the room.
The white lights in the room are almost blinding and the sterile scent of the room makes her feel queasy; the feeling intensifies as she sees John hooked up to an assortment of wires and machines.
Charlie lightly crawls into the bed, trying her best not to unhook anything necessary, before resting her head on her lover’s chest. His heartbeat is slow and steady; a stark contrast to the rapid palpitations in her own chest.
The sobs start quietly at first. Guilt and fear consume her as she clings to the cotton t-shirt the nurses changed John into; certain she’s leaving tear stains all over it. She won’t lose two of the people she loves the most. Not today.
The body underneath her shifts a bit causing Charlie to look up, worried that something may be wrong. She can tell from the way his eyelids flutter that John is trying to wake up. Leaning up, she runs her fingers through the tendrils of hair that have come loose since the attack.
Relief washes over her as she notices the way his chest rises and falls; a clear sign he will be staying Earthside for now. Sniffling, Charlie brings her hand to rest against his clammy cheek; surprise overtaking her when she feels a smile against her palm.
“I knew you loved me.” John’s voice is raspy and slurred due to the painkillers Jacob’s medical staff took the liberty of giving him.
Charlie merely hums. Despite the fact that the two of them have been together for awhile now, she still struggles with expressing her feelings.
“Never thought you would cry like that for me.”
She can feel her freckled cheeks flush from the statement and the way John grins at her in response. If there was ever a better time to be open about the way she feels, now is the moment.
Picking up his wrist, Charlie brings her lips to his pulse point. “Ya know, some might even say I’m in love with you.”
“Is that so?,” John says, wincing as he reaches up to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear.
She nods, hiding the way her lips curve into a smile as she plants another light kiss to his wrist.
John sighs as he closes his eyes, clearly enjoying the feeling, but also struggling with the pain currently hitting him. “You know the resistance will come after you now.”
Charlie leans down again, cautiously curving her body to fit against his. “Let them try,” she says, resting her head in the crook of his neck; the tubes for oxygen tickling her face.
She feels John brush his lips against her hair before pulling back to rest his head on top of hers. “Why did you choose me?”
“With you I have a life I’ve always wanted; stability, a family, a child,” she smiles up at him. “Neither of us deserve to lose that,” Charlie says with a shrug, as if it’s the most obvious answer.
A throat clears near the doorway, forcing the pair to turn towards the figure; one more capable than the other.
“The deputy is alive. There was no sign of her or Nick Rye at the scene of the crash.”
Joseph leans casually against the door, as if he didn’t just deal a heavy blow to Charlie with his news. As if this news just didn’t cause her blood pressure to spike yet again.
“But I’m proud of you, Charlene,” the older man says as he steps closer to the bed, ignoring the shocked silence that fills the room. “You really went out of your way to protect our family.”
The Father gently pats her leg as he smiles down at her. The act seems forced and it causes Charlie to eye him warily. She chalks it up to the events of the day causing her to go on a rollercoaster of emotions.
“You should,” she coughs, shifting around uncomfortably, “put out patrols around the Henbane just to make sure they don’t run to Faith.”
A wave of guilt flashes through her at calling out her cousin’s possible hiding spot, but Charlie can’t stomach the hypocrisy of falling in love and wanting to protect one Seed while wanting to kill the others. If she could contain her utter disdain for Jacob, Sadie could, and should, do the same.
Joseph nods at her and for the first time it seems like he’s actually taking her opinion seriously. Turning his attention to his brother then, the man gets up and walks over towards him. “I’m relieved to see you’re doing well, John,” he says as he rests his forehead against his.
John doesn’t respond, just leans into the touch; grateful for the positive attention. “I should let you rest, though.” The Father pulls back from his brother, straightening his posture yet again. “Jacob and I will be sending some of our best chosen to search the county for the deputy. She will be held responsible and punished for this. I will make sure of it, brother.”
Charlie flinches at the promise, the words making her want to curl into herself. The couple watches as Joseph departs the room with a final nod, closing the door behind him.
Laying back down, Charlie rests her head on John’s shoulder. She can feel the calming beats of his heart from this position; the pulsations matching a similar rhythm to her own. Planting a kiss to his smooth skin, she lets out a deep sigh.
“I don’t think this war is going to end anytime soon.”

Away in the Night
Tumblr media
Type: Charles Smith; Introspective
Trigger Warning: Mention of Alcohol
A/N: A few days or weeks ago I posted something about wanting to do more fics that center around the character without a reader insert etc. This one is for @fangirl-ramblings who requested one with Charles.
While I’m not sure %100 about his relationship with his father, I do feel as though the relationship was healthy enough before the loss of his mother, so I would feel as though he would have some remorse for leaving, even if its the tiniest amount, though he knows it’s something he has to do.
----------
The room was dimly lit by the moonlight peaking through the cracks in the dulled, yellow curtains. A few pieces of mismatched furniture could just barely be seen; a small bed with a thick, wool blanket, a bedside table with an oil lamp, a large dresser with one door broken on the top hinge, and a second side-table with a bowl of tepid water.
Despite the limited light, Charles was able to move around his bedroom with practiced memory. His eyes, though still adjusting, scanned the room with accuracy as he quickly and quietly grabbed a few odds and ends and stuffed them into his traveler’s pouch. Though there wasn’t much to his name, he still chose to pack light, only taking with him what he deemed essential.
A hunting knife was one of the first items he had chosen. It had been given to him by his father now that he had been deemed ‘of age’ and ready to make the first steps into the strange world of manhood. The hilt had been carved by a family member long since passed. The design was simple, yet elegant; an outline of a whitetail deer head with antlers reaching to an unseen sky.
The second item was a beaded bracelet that had belonged to his mother before she too had passed. His memories of his mother were far and few between, and they became more unclear with each passing year, but it gave him courage whenever he was frightened, so gently into the pouch it went.
The rest of the bag he filled with some food he had stashed away, a sleeping roll, and a change of warm clothes.
Closing the pack, Charles swung the strap over his shoulder and, taking one last look on the space he had come to know as a refuge over the last few years, exited the room.
One of the first things he noticed was the fireplace was out. The only way he knew it had even been lit, was the dull glow of a few embers peaking out from among the ashes. The second thing he noticed was the slumped over form of his father on a wooden chair before the fireplace. An empty bottle of whiskey lay tipped over on the floor and a second one hung loosely from his fingers.
It was an unsurprising sight to the young boy. After his mother had been taken by the army when Charles had been even smaller with no sign of ever returning, his father had begun drowning his sorrows in beer and whiskey at each and every opportunity. This proved to be very difficult for Charles. As he was the only other member of his small family, it became his burden to see to it that they had food on the table and a warm place to stay. While there were times his father tried to sober up and fly right, his grief would only come back with an even stronger hold.
After a few seasons of the same scenario, Charles knew he only had two options; stay and watch his father and his future slowly drift away, or strike out on his own in the hopes of making something of himself. It didn’t take very long for him to realize which seemed to hold more promise.
Approaching his father on silent feet, he eased the bottle from his fingers and set it on the ground, out of reach. Then he removed the hat from his head, and placed a final kiss on his forehead, his lips barely brushing his father’s temple.
Goodbye father, he thought solemnly. May you see better skies.
A moment later and Charles was out the front door, his feet leading him towards the great unknown and his heart leading him to a greater sense of self.

❝  this used to be a challenge.  ❞
watching the arrow strike the straw-stuffed dummy dead centre of its featureless face, the dust had barely settled when another sunk into the target's chest.
what a distant memory it was now, that teenager who had joined their ranks. the one that had become a young man who had pointedly veered away from the weapon he now excelled with.
the ingredients and supplies necessary to manufacture their own ammunition would eventually run out, but so long as the superbloom kept up and the trees kept stretching to the skies, they'd have all they needed to keep fashioning bows and arrows.
leaning over to pull the arrows free from the dummy, linny spun them around between her fingers before dropping them back into askuwheteau's quiver, leaning in to bump her shoulder against his to try and throw off his next shot.

[  shield  ]  sender  steps  between  receiver  and  danger -> Peaches and Cheeseburger! || @maximuses
⚔️ Nonverbal Memes Prompts // ACCEPTING ⚔️
The good thing about being such a smart grizzly bear like Cheeseburger was that he could smell those dastardly Peggies from miles away. No sir, those foul-smelling shotgun-toting cultist wouldn’t get by his radar even on a fishing trip. The bad thing about it was, being able to detect them didn’t necessarily mean he could avoid them. He was big and slow and the cult was still gunning for him, hoping to take advantage of his strength and use him as just another Judge.
So when they came for him, he did the one thing he knew best. He ran. He ran clear of the Whitetail Mountains, tumbling down the hillsides and splashing across the rivers while the snaps and snarls of the Judges grazed his back heels and bullets whizzed past his shaggy fur, narrowly missing him. He called for help, but all that answered were the stomps of deer fleeing from his path, the birds twittering in a panic as they took to the skies. He crossed a gap of water he knew could only be the Henbane River, crawling onto the bank and taking off again despite the burn in his legs and the ache of his lungs in his chest. He smelled people; burgers cooking, cheese melting, Peaches rolling in the warm sun and sending up pollen— Peaches! Where there was Peaches there was people and there was safety. He came barreling into the county jail through the locked door by the gate, whining and crying and seeking comfort from the other Resistance members. Within a moment, there were gunshots and explosions, and Cheeseburger did his best to roar and look intimidating, but the shiver in the Bear’s stance betrayed his fear. And that was when Peaches stepped in front of him.
Right between him and one of the Chosen with a loaded and ready shotgun.
Tumblr media
And something about that sight took the fear out of him. Something about the way she hissed and snarled, how she showed her teeth and bared her claws— how she protected him made his heart soften. And something about the way her threat was answered with a cocking of the gun made his blood boil with a rage most uncharacteristic of the F.A.N.G. Center’s gentle mascot. Without a second thought, he reared up on his back legs, letting out a deafening roar and baring his teeth at the threat before them. The Chosen visibly stuttered, raising his gun and stumbling back with a misfire that caught the bear in the shoulder. Suddenly, the fire in his veins spilled over, and with his good paw he swiped, sending the man flying. As he came down on all fours he snarled again, standing right by Peaches’ side; loud, proud, and tired of having Peggies around.

FOR HIRE ROSTER
When traveling through Hope County, you encounter many people and animals who wish to join you in the fight against the Peggies.  These characters are categorized as specialists and fighters.  Having one of these companions with you can often mean the difference between life and death.
Specialists appear on the map with a radio message when your cursor hovers over their location.  They are typically tied to story missions or to liberating a certain location.  Specialists come with two abilities that are extremely powerful and unique to that individual and to the specific situation.  Recruit them based on your preferred playtype and your current needs.  There are three specialists in each region of the map, for a total of nine.
Fighters are found all over Hope County by liberating outposts, being freed from captors, or just patrolling through the wilderness.  Fighters also have two random abilities that unlock by killing enemies; these can be quite strong if you invest the time with them.  You can recruit up to three fighters at any one time and summon whichever one is most useful or if one of your other guns for hire is resting.  At the beginning of the game, you are only able to recruit fighters to help you with your fight against the Peggies.
In combat, specialists and fighters following you engage any enemies you are already fighting.  However, you can direct them to attack specific targets or move to specific areas to override their normal behavior.  If one of your followers is defeated in combat, they are not permanently dead.  They simply need time to heal and cannot be summoned again until their cooldown timer is up.  Putting points into the Leader perk tree can reduce this cooldown, and allow you to summon another follower in your squad.  In addition, your follower can revive you if the enemy strikes you down, making them essential companions.
GUNS FOR HIRE

Characteristic:  The Sharpshooting Hero
Class:  Sniper
Location:  Holland Valley - Lamb of God Church

Abilities:  Friend Sight / her laser sight is easier to distinguish.
Grace Armstrong is an excellent sniper with a powerful rifle that can one-shot most cultists.  Use her for taking out especially hard-to-reach enemies, like snipers or cultists with RPGs.  Note that her attacks come slowly, so she is vulnerable to melee cultists and predators.
Grace is found at the Lamb of God Church in Holland Valley.  Approaching the church and clearing out the cultists surrounding it begins the mission, Grace Under Fire.  Once you climb atop the church, you are required to help Grace protect three mausoleums from cultist attacks.  After you defeat the cultists and ensure at least one mausoleum remains intact, Grace joins your team as a gun for hire.
Nick Rye
Characteristic:  The King of the Skies
Class:  Pilot
Location:  Holland Valley - Rye & Sons Aviation
Abilities: Bomb’s Away / you want a bomb? He’ll drop it.
Abilities:  Light ‘Em Up / you want a strafing run? Look out.
Nick Rye supports you from the sky in his plane Carmina and is only useful in open areas.  His strafing attacks and bombs are devastating, especially to vehicles, but have a significant delay after each attack as he circles back around.  Nick is weakest against Chosen fighter planes and mounted weaponry.  Do not summon him when your fight takes you into heavily wooded or indoor locations.
Nick Rye’s missions begin when you go to Rye & Sons Aviation and defeat the cultists attacking his home.  He asks you to head to Seed Ranch and retrieve his plans.  After you clear John Seed’s Ranch in Holland Valley and get into the yellow plane located inside the hanger, Nick asks you to use it to destroy some of the cultists’ property before landing the plane at Rye & Sons.  Once you secure his house and his hanger from the cultists, Nick joins your team as a gun for hire.
Hurk Drubman Jr.
Characteristic: Just dangerously stupid
Class:  RPG
Location:  Whitetail Mountains - Fort Drubman
Abilities:  Heat Seeker / RPGs will track air and land vehicles.
Abilities:  Junk It / RPGs on vehicles are more destructive.
Hurk Drubman Jr. carries an RPG and is perfect for helping you take down armored convoys and aircraft.  Any vehicles he destroys explode with greater force, inflicting carnage in a wider area around the vehicle.  However, he can be a liability if you are trying to capture vehicles, rescue civilians, or fight in tight quarters.
Visit Fort Drubman n Whitetail Mountains and speak to Hurk Drubman Sr.  This starts The Prodigal Son mission, which requires you to help Hurk retrieve his father’s truck.  Ride with him to Haskell Lookout Tower and clear out the cultists entrenched there.  Climb the tower to spot your next objective below to the southwest.  Follow Hurk down the zip lines and head to the cabin on the pond’s southwest side.  Defeat the cultists guarding the truck and drive back to Fort Drubman with Hurk in the rescued vehicle, defeating any cultists impeding your path.  Finally, finish the mission by speaking to Hurk Drubman Sr., who begs you to take Hurk with you, making him a gun for hire.
Adelaide Drubman
Characteristic:  The Chopper Queen
Class:  Pilot
Location:  Henbane River - Drubman Marina
Abilities:  Call a Chopper / when called on, will deliver a helicopter.
Abilities:  Less Reload / gun + big magazine = more shooting.
Adelaide Drubman brings support to your squad when she is summoned by arriving in a helicopter.  This ability alone makes her invaluable.  However, even on the ground she can maintain a longer sustained fire against enemies before needing to reload.  Adelaid is neither particularly strong nor weak against any foe, making her a dependable companion in almost all circumstances.
Adelaide Drubman’s mission begins are you liberate the Drubman Marina in the Henbane River region.  When you speak to Adelaide, she asks you to hunt down her prized helicopter Tulip, which was stolen from her.  Additionally, she’d like you to eliminate her traitorous pilot friends while searching for Tulip.  Once you have recovered the helicopter from the cultists and returned it to the marina, you must defeat the cultists assaulting it.  After using Tulips superior firepower to make short work of the enemies, land it at the marina’s helipad and speak with Adelaide.  She joins your team as a gun for hire.
Jess Black
Characteristic:  The Master Huntress
Class: Hunter
Location: Whitetail Mountains - Baron Lumber Mill
Abilities: Concealment / enemies will have a harder time detecting her.
Abilities: Feral Friendly / wild animals see her as one of their own.
Jess Black is a master of her environment and is nearly impossible to detect when in stealth.  This makes her perfect for helping you silently disarm cult outposts alarms.  In addition, she can kill any hard-to-reach cultists with her bow without alerting nearby enemies.  Jess can be easily overwhelmed when facing large waves of fast-moving enemies, such as Angels or armored units and vehicles.
Jess Black’s mission begins after you liberate the Baron Lumber Mill in Whitetail Mountains.  When you speak to Jess at the lumber mill, she asks you to help her track down a cultist named “the Cook.”  Follow Jess to the Cook’s camp, eliminating any cultists in your path.  Once you arrive in the camp, free the captives and eliminate their cultist tormentors.  Follow Jess to the nearby quarry, where you must rescue more hostages.  Finally, you have the Cook’s location - a place called the Pit.  Follow Jess to the Pit and defeat the Cook and his cultist guards; then speak with Jess to have her join your team as a gun for hire.
Sharky Boshaw
Characteristic: The Pyrotechnics Phenom
Class:  Heavy Flamer
Location: Henbane River - Moonflower Trailer Park
Abilities: Fire It Up / attacks will have an extra spark to it.
Abilities: Shatterproof / resistant to most explosions and impacts.
Sharky is a powerhouse when fighting enemies that like to get in close.  His preferred weapons are the flamethower and incendiary ammo for his shotgun.  Sharky does come with one major drawback: All that use of fire tends to catch the terrain on fire, which could burn you alive.
Sharky’s mission begins once you speak to him at Moonflower Trailer Park in the Henbane River region.  He wants your help in defeating the Angels that always come when he plays his music.  After killing the first wave of Angels, Sharky asks you to shut the music off by switching off the four speakers around the trailer park.  Once you finish that and secure the area, Sharky joins your team as a gun for hire.
FANGS FOR HIRE
Boomer
Characteristic: The Good Boy
Class: Scout
Location: Holland Valley - Rae Rae’s Pumpkin Farm
Abilities: Pointer / will tag all enemies nearby.
Abilities: Retriever / will sometimes fetch a weapon after an attack.
Boomer is great for scouting cultist outposts.  He reveals nearby enemies to you without alerting suspicion, and in a pinch, he can retrieve weapons for you from fallen enemies, and even has a small chance to steal weapons from enemies who are still alive.  Boomer can defeat regular cultists but is not a great fighter.  He is ineffective against most predators and higher-ranking cultists.  However, there is a small chance a predator will flee when Boomer engages them.
Boomer is found at Rae Rae’s Pumpkin Farm in Holland Valley.  Approaching this farm begins the mission, Man’s Best Friend.  Once you free Boomer from his cage and defeat his captors, he joins you as a fang for hire.
Cheeseburger
Characteristic: The Fearsome Grizzly
Class: Heavy
Location: Whitetail Mountains - Linero Building Supplies
Abilities: Bear Arms / will exercise his right to attack.
Abilities: Cross to Bear / will draw focus during combat.
Cheeseburger is a murder machine.  His melee attacks are devastating to all but the most heavily armored cultists.  Additionally, his imposing presence draws enemies to him.  Cheeseburger is most helpful when fighting Angels and other melee  focused cultists.  His only known weakness is, ironically, cheeseburgers.
Cheeseburger’s mission begins after you clear the F.A.N.G. Center outpost in Whitetail Mountains and you speak to Wade.  The first thing you must do to win Cheeseburger’s favor is catch his favorite fish; feed it to him once you find him.  The stream just north of Landsdowne Airstrip has what you need.  Then head to Linero Building Supplies and feed Cheeseburger the fish you caught.  Shortly afterward, defend Cheeseburger against a horde of cultists attempting to capture him.  Once you have defeated the cultists, Cheeseburger joins your team as a fang for hire.
Peaches
Characteristic: The Feline Power house
Class: Stealth
Location: Henbane River - Peaches Taxidermy
Abilities: Pounce / will silently take down an enemy.
Abilities: Stalk. / will stay hidden when moving through tall grass.
Peaches can silently dispatch most cultists, makng her a perfect companion when choosing to stealthily liberate an outpost or ambush a Peggie patrol.  In the wild, sh remains hidden from all foes when in tall grass until she chooses to strike a target, or she attacks a target of your choice.  However, once Peaches is spotted, gunfire can quickly take her down, making her especially vulnerable to heavy-weapon-wielding cultists.
Peaches’ mission begins once you speak to Miss Mable at Peaches Taxidermy in the Henbane River region.  She asks you to track down Peaches, who has run off to hunt down the cultists.  Get some of Peaches’ special treats on a table near her cage.  Next, travel to the nearby camp to search for her.  Eliminate the cultists and equip Peaches’ treats.  Throw treats on the ground and lead Peaches back to Miss Mable.   Once you near Peaches Taxidermy, you and Peaches must defeat the cultists assaulting the area.  Lure Peaches near the enemy for added support.  After you defeat all the cultists, lure Peaches back into her pen and then talk to Miss Mable.  She releases Peaches to your care and she becomes a fang for hire.
RESISTANCE FIGHTERS
All resistance fighters are different.  Experiment with each until you find one that matches your play style.  The following table lists all abilities that a recruited fighter can potentially have.  The first ability is unlocked once a fighter kills [5] enemies, and the second is unlocked at [12] kills.  These abilities never change, so if a fighter doesn’t possess the skills you need, feel free to hire and use another.  Once your three available recruitment slots are full, it is possible to dismiss a recruited fighter to make room for a new recruit; feel free to experiment on your travels.
Veterinarian / will revive fangs for hire.
Back Up / will revive themselves when downed.
Quick Recovery / will take less time to recover health.
Field Surgeon / will fully revive your health when downed.
Mechanic / will repair the vehicle you drive.
Hoarder / will allow you to carry more ammo.

Herbalist / will grab plant life when not in combat.
Vulture / will find extra stuff when looting a body.
Intimidator / will lay down fire that scares the enemy.
Power Hitter / melee attacks might send enemies flying.
Hot Buckshot / shotgun blasts might start a fire.
Spotter / will tag enemies at the start of combat.
Thick Skin / will be more resilient to damage.
No Tracks / will make you untrackable in tall grass.
Sharpshooter / will snipe less often but be deadlier.
Recycles / will hand over recovered ammo after some kills.
