Fullmetal Alchemist Timeline

@scienceoftheidiot​ and I have been talking a lot about FMA in the last couple of weeks and I realized the timeline can get really confusing at times. Being the visual person I am, I decided to do write down the timeline for the sake of my sanity. 

Notes: The dates are taken from the 2009 anime and the manga. Some dates I took from the Wiki as well as the 2003 anime. Those dates will be noted as non-canon. My personal notes and remarks will be marked with a “*”.

[FMAB] The quieter moments

One of the biggest “I love you”s in Fullmetal Alchemist are all the ways people respect each other’s bodily autonomy. There are two scenes that carry this theme to its fullest potential, and I love them so, so much.

The first one is quite iconic: Riza’s throat was slit and Roy has a chance to save her - by dooming their country and committing human transmutation. And Roy would do it. He would throw it all away just to save her, even though he knows that human transmutation is an unforgivable sin. But she looks at him and signals him to Not Do It. And he doesn’t. He wants to, but he doesn’t do it. Because only minutes earlier, he hurt her again by dooming himself (and potentially the country) with his fury.  And if there is one thing Roy Mustang doesn’t want to do, it’s hurt Riza Hawkeye any more than he already has. Even if that means watching her die. Even if that means letting her go.

He respects her and their goals enough to say no.

He loves her enough to let her die.

The second one is just as heart-wrenching: after Al sacrificed himself, basically dying in the process, Ed tries to think of a way to save him. Both Hohenheim and Ling offer him a Philosopher’s Stone to bring Al back - and Ed says No. Even though he wants nothing more in life than to save his little brother. Even though there is nothing he wants more desperately than the safety of Al. He says no for many reasons - Hohenheim is his father after all, Ling needs the stone to become Emperor - but mostly he says no because he and Al promised to never use a Stone for themselves. And he respects that. He puts Al’s wish above his own desire to see his little brother again. He respects Al’s decision (his own conviction) enough to break the rules of the world to find another way.

Because he loves Al - he loves him enough not to break the fundamentals of their principles. He loves him enough to respect the integrity of their believes.

And the narrative rewards both Roy and Edward for their choice to respect the agency and bodily autonomy of their loved ones - they survive, are saved, are brought back… and neither Ed nor Roy had to force their own desire for them to live on clearly stated last wishes.

So often we see media portray the disregard for bodily autonomy (especially in medical contexts) as a sign of love, the breaking of patient-doctor confidentiality as a sign of care, the violation of a living will as a sign of family - I like to think that Fullmetal Alchemist shows us that there’s strength in respecting it instead.

It’s like when Adam said “I’m your hands and your eyes. What do you think I’ll see if he dies?” And also when Ronan said “No. Do you hear me, Cabeswater? You promised to keep me safe. Who are we to you? Nothing? If you let him die, that is not keeping me safe. Do you understand? If they die, I die, too.”

They just. It’s like. They’re such similar statements and functionally show the same love for their friend but mean such different things from Adam to Ronan. It’s like. There’s kind of two ways to take what Adam’s saying. The first is like. Gansey’s death would be so upsetting, so tragic, would hurt so much that he would be useless to Cabeswater. The second is more like. If you let Gansey die he’ll never help Cabeswater again, voluntarily. Like despite everything before he figuring out how to hear and help Cabeswater, he would refuse to help. Despite the things he saw and heard and felt and the genuine distress it put him through, if Cabeswater kills Gansey, he’ll endure that for presumably the rest of his life so long as he never helps the thing that killed his friend.

And then you have Ronan. Which is an entirely different statement with a similar sentiment but where Adam is saying I’ll suffer to spite you because you did this, Ronan is saying without Gansey I won’t be here. End sentence. He’s saying protecting me is keeping Gansey alive. That is the most important thing Cabeswater can do to protect Ronan. Is keep Gansey alive. And then there’s also sort of two ways to take this. The first being that without Gansey there to be Ronan’s self control because albeit, he has none on his own, his own bad choice, impulses, whatever, will kill him. Simple as that. The second one requires you to think back to pre-trb Ronan. The Ronan who lost more than half his family in one fell swoop. Who went from being the favorite of his father, from having a loving, caring mother, two brothers he (mostly) got along with to a dead dad, a mom he couldn’t ever see again, a brother who he no longer gets on with and is now his guardian, and a baby brother he dreamt. Pre-trb Ronan already went through so much emotional turmoil and grief and self-hatred that he barely made it out alive. He hated himself so much that his dreams tried to kill him frequently, and almost did, multiple times. The second way to take Ronan’s statement is, if Gansey dies, Ronan can’t take that grief. It’s saying that if Gansey dies, the grief will be all consuming, and he won’t make it back from that.

and lastly a v simple recolor of my wendy redesign bc i always hated the colors

natsu and lucy sparring post-war at the guild gym and they kinda gather an audience cause of how long they’ve been fighting. lucy’s hair is out of her ponytail and natsu’s bangs are in his eyes. they’ve gotten to the point where they’re playing dirty. consistently taunting each other and absolute foul play. at some point lucy pins natsu on his back with his hands above his head and natsu fuckin headbutts her to get outta it. there are faint scales around natsu’s eyes, the room feels like it’s 90 degrees. everytime lucy changes stardress its nearly blinding and it seems like there’s bits of stardust clinging to her.

the tension is fucking palpable. everyone feels it. people are wolf whistling whenever one of them pins the other down. natsu gets lucy in a headlock and whispers something in her ear and erza feels downright scandalized. she considers covering wendy’s poor eyes.

Ya know, everyone talks shit about Fairytail because it does rely heavily on “the power of friendship” and I get if that’s not your thing or feels too childish for you but

Can we acknowledge how dark it all is? Loke/Leo is suicidal in the beginning, Lucy comes from an abusive father and dead mother, Gray is an orphan And his step in mother figure died to save him after he made a bad choice, Erza was an orphan and a Literal Slave as a child with a bunch of other children and her childhood love got possessed and continued her abuser’s work. We all know the shit with Natsu and the dragon slayers.

That’s not even going into the Mirajane/Elfman/Lisanna backstory, or the story of any other characters like Juvia and Happy and Charla and Zeref and such. Like holy shit? This show is so so dark and everyone looks over all the trauma and dark themes because there’s the whole power of friendship thing, which was weaved into the show to actually mean something and not just there for shits and giggles.

All this to say, you can dislike the show, hate it even, but don’t just judge it for the light hearted outer shell it has, because inside is dark and dense and Meaningful
