Het gebruik van walstroom voor zeeschepen kan bijdragen aan schonere lucht rond de Schiedamse zeehavens. Het voorkomt ook dat grote zeeschepen hun generatoren continu moeten laten draaien. Dit betekent minder geluidsoverlast voor de omgeving. Maar waar walstroom voor binnenvaartschepen steeds gebruikelijker wordt, gelden voor zeeschepen nog de nodige uitdagingen. Over deze uitdagingen spraken Europarlementariër Caroline Nagtegaal en Jeannette Baljeu, gedeputeerde van de provincie Zuid-Holland, met Damen Shiprepair en Huisman. Op initiatief van de Schiedamse wethouder Antoinette Laan bezochten zij op donderdag 23 maart de Wiltonhaven. Jeannette Baljeu over het belang van walstroom: “De provincie Zuid-Holland werkt aan zero-emissie in haven en industrie. We hebben daarbij niet alleen oog voor grote havens zoals de Rotterdamse haven. Ook kleinere havens zijn van belang. In de Wiltonhaven kijken we, onder andere met Huisman, wat er allemaal kan. In het bijzonder op het gebied van walstroom. Met walstroom kunnen we een belangrijke stap zetten in de energietransitie. Door het gebruik ervan reduceren we niet alleen CO2, maar ook stikstof, fijnstof en nestgeluid. Daarmee dragen we bij aan verschillende opgaven van de provincie.” Negatieve businesscase De Europese Fit for 55 regelgeving (55% CO2-reductie per 2030) maakt walstroom per 2030 verplicht voor containerschepen en cruiseschepen. Tegelijkertijd is de businesscase voor stroom voor zeeschepen nog niet positief. Overheden stimuleren het gebruik van walstroom, maar rijkssubsidies zijn niet toereikend. Daarom besloot de provincie Zuid-Holland onlangs om een walstroominstallatie voor de ferry’s van DFDS te subsidiëren. De provincie ziet ook kansen in de Wiltonhaven. De Wiltonhaven kent een extra obstakel. Anders dan bij DFDS, waar steeds dezelfde schepen terugkeren, is in de Wiltonhaven niet bekend welke schepen gaan aanleggen. Gegevens over het benodigde vermogen en de laadtijd zijn voor de Wiltonhaven niet te voorspellen, omdat elk schip weer anders is. Daar komt bij dat de kadebezetting sterk wisselt. Als er geen schip aan de kade ligt, dan staan er geen inkomsten tegenover de hoge kosten van de walstroom-infrastructuur. Ook steun uit Europa voor walstroom Het grote vermogen voor de schepen in de Wiltonhaven, het ontbreken van een wettelijke plicht voor walstroom en het ontbreken van een bekende, terugkerende afnemer, in combinatie met een lage kadebezetting, maakt walstroom in de Wiltonhaven een uitdaging waar op Europees niveau oog voor is. Europarlementariër Caroline Nagtegaal zet zich in voor duurzaam transport. Ze spreekt haar steun uit voor stroom in de Wiltonhaven: “Schepen die hiervoor wel al geschikt zijn kunnen bij deze aanlegplek nog niet aan de stekker. Walstroom is daarom hard nodig in offshore havens zoals de Wiltonhaven. Als overheid moeten we dat stimuleren. Dit is een maatschappelijke opgave, waarbij regelgeving niet belemmerend moet werken en de kosten niet alleen bij het bedrijfsleven terecht mogen komen.” Offshore haven De Wiltonhaven is een offshore haven. Het is een belangrijke schakel voor vaartuigen die betrokken zijn bij het installeren van windmolens op zee. Met scheepsreparatie en vooral hijskranen, kranen die op zee een windmolen van 200 meter hoog op een fundering kunnen tillen. De kranen zijn vaak geïnstalleerd op een jack-up vessel dat zich kan vastzetten op de zeebodem. De MegaWatts die nodig zijn voor zeeschepen, werkeilanden en kranen vragen een enorme laadinfrastructuur.
