Saturnino Efrén de Jesús Herrán Guinchard, known as Saturnino Herrán , was a prominent Mexican painter of the early 20th century . His work is framed within pictorial modernism and is considered the initiator of Mexican muralism . His paintings are recognized for addressing pre-Hispanic myths as well as scenes of popular and indigenous classes. Although he only lived 31 years, he created some of the most recognized works of Mexican art, such as The legend of the volcanoes , Tehuana , La criolla del mantón (below), El cofrade de San Miguel , Our gods , among others. Since 1988 his work has been considered an artistic Monument in Mexico.

Mexican artist Saturnino Herrán (1887-1918) was a painter, draftsman, teacher, illustrator, who also revived the art of the mural in Mexico. In his short life he was a pioneer, and an innovator, in the way he fused modern Mexican art with Classical European aesthetics.

there is something so special about falling in love with artists and creators who are dead, their work is done, there’s nothing new, their oeuvre can be examined as a crystallized whole, but you can still learn more about them as people and then revisit their work and see it differently. and if they died too young or too suddenly there’s also that bittersweet feeling of knowing that their life was cut short but here you are, so many years later, still connecting with them and being influenced by them in real time. idk i just think it’s such a lovely part of being human y’know

‘Portrait of the Blind’ as painted in 1914 by Mexican painter Saturnino Heran (1887-1918) who also illustrated books and designed stained glass windows. Presumably he died in the world influenza epidemic.
