Saab 99 Turbo:昔日性能渦輪機,飛入尋常百姓家 . 不若保時捷(Porsche)911 Turbo,所謂「神車」般的高貴稀有,史上第一批真正走入尋常百姓生活的渦輪增壓家庭房車,首推西元 1978 年問市的「戰機」,瑞典紳寶(Saab)99 Turbo…透過Saab引以為傲的本業,也就是航空機製造為意象主軸,品牌設計總監Sixten Sason(1912–1967)在辭世前留下的基本款草圖中,不論是Saab 99的外觀或是座艙,均大量融入了戰鬥機的侵略性表徵思維,訴求著非「制服車」的個性化與顯明形象,且針對冬季常有低溫或暴風雪襲擊的中北歐與北美東岸市場,強調其車身結構的高安全性與耐寒性。 . 『賦予飛機擁有了四個輪子的味道!』,在英國專業試車手的高度肯定評論下,到了西元二十世紀七零年代中葉,研發團隊決定將原本引擎缸體的排氣量從1,709c.c.擴大到1,985c.c.,還首次增加了一組小口徑,由Garrett AiResearch製造的 T3 型渦輪增壓器,讓Saab 99全新上市的「Turbo」型號能夠輸出145匹馬力(5000 轉)和24.08公斤米扭力(3000 轉),並在搭載四速手排變速箱之下,可於9.2秒內完成0至100公里/小時的加速,最高安全極速更來到了200公里/小時的整數大關。 . 帳面數字今日看來似乎不甚起眼,但當時不只較一般Saab 99自然進氣款高出約 23%的動力,高速行駛(110公里/小時)的油耗表現居然還比自然進氣要節省約8%左右,尤其在汽車雜誌的道路試乘過程中,從市區穩健的時速60公里,到高速巡航時的160公里,Saab 99 Turbo的渦輪增壓器幾無動力衰竭之處,也讓駕駛人更加放膽地踩下油門,在turbo風扇深不可測的實力下,一探瑞典工藝精隨之奧祕!更可謂完美解答了過往車商追求卓越性能與燃油效率之間的矛盾。 . 有著「雷式」戰鬥機「Saab 37 Viggen」的研製背景,Saab 99 Turbo的風阻係數值(Cd)為0.37,相較於同期登場的Ford Mustang 風阻值0.44、Nissan Fairlady 280ZX的0.385,就可以清楚明白Saab在空力造型上的優勢與能耐。當時坐在高度類戰機艙的多功能儀表板前,聽著渦輪增壓引擎馬力全開的聲浪,不禁讓人脫口而出:「The plane is going to take off!」 . 副駕駛座乘客:『Tea or Coffee?』 (不好意思,可以寄杯嗎?) . 好的!我知道這梗很冷,實在不好笑。但厲害的不僅於此,西元1979年2月,Saab原廠以99 Turbo Rally型號,稍微調整引擎輸出等設定後,投入了世界越野拉力錦標賽的行列,更在瑞典分站賽時,藉由傳奇車手Lennart Blomqvist與Björn Cederberg的黃金搭檔,技壓群雄,以總賽道長度 630 公里費時 6 小時 34 分 49 秒的佳績,順利抱回了冠軍獎盃,更成為世界上首部贏得拉力賽錦標的渦輪增壓型賽車。 . 還算平易近人,在北美市場僅9,998美金的入手價(同樣是渦輪車,Porsche 911 Turbo在美國的建議售價為36,700 元美金),以及比同級對手強而有力的性能表現(當年德國BMW 320i的馬力值,歐規是125 匹、美規因排汙限制調降成110匹),加上專業媒體紛紛給予高度肯定之下,只有四個完整生產年的Saab 99 Turbo,憑藉著約9,641台的總生產量,正式確立了其在市售渦輪車領域不朽的歷史地位,美國的《Popular Mechanics》更將Saab 99 Turbo列名「史上最偉大渦輪增壓汽車十傑」的亞軍!當然,剛剛好僅次於西元1976年披掛上陣的Porsche 911 Turbo,嗯哼,人家是「神車」嘛! . #瑞典 #歷史 #汽車 #Saab #car #turbo #sweden #history #99 #engine #great #love #photography #awesome @saab https://www.instagram.com/p/B-E4KATHeoN/?igshid=1mgrrvkeb7xcu

What have they done to that poor SAAB.......
I'm going to be frank, that car is probably only good for whatever is not cut up and salvageable with the rest going to scrap unfortunately.
Old SAABs are really cool, especially 900 Turbos. For those who are not in the know, SAAB was originally an airplane company and well that is the part of the company that survives today, with the car portion haven been shutdown in 2011, I think a Chinese auto manufacture (Geely??? I think they also own Lotus and Volvo now) picked up the rights to the name but I don't think they have done anything with it.
Anyways, 900s are weird and in a way I really like. The cars are front wheel drive but the engine is longitudinal in the engine bay like a rear wheel drive car (most fwd cars are transverse mounted) they are also leaned way over to the passenger side like 45 degrees.

The output of the engine is at the front as opposed to the rear unlike pretty much every other car ever, this also means the drive belts for the timing and accessories like AC, the water pump and alternator are shoved up against the firewall. The transmission is also directly under the engine and forms a portion of the engines' oilpan. How do they get the engines power from the front of the engine to the transmission below it? its connected with a chain and sprocket of course! All of this weirdness gives the 900 equal length driveshafts which mean no torque-steer! (a problem on a lot of powerful FWD cars) The 900 itself was just an evolution of the SAAB 99 which was introduced in the late 60s. Oh yeah you can also get it turbo! SAAB was arguably the first manufacturer to produce a mass market turbo car that wasnt incredibly finicky thanks to a computer control unit for the turbo so it didnt just explode if you put the wrong grade of gas in. Pretty much everything about this car is incredibly weird, like the ignition was also between the seats as well.
Anyways SAAB got bought by General Motors in the 90s which didn't end well for SAAB. GM is most well known for being penny pinchers, and this clashed with what was going on at SAAB who pretty much always blew past their engineering budget, so when the recession happened it was pretty much writing on the wall for them.
So TLDR, old SAABs are very weird and neat, I'm sad that someone hacked this one up into that...
