Me: *gives rats piles of fuzzy fabric*

Rats: *pull floor-lining paper up three floors to shred it, leaving nice soft fabric around the nesting box like a soft cotton-poly moat*

Me: *cannot sleep because the boys are dragging crinkly paper all over the cage and shredding it all gosh-darned night*

Thomas Oliver Gosnoll came into the world in a hurry. He wasn't due for a few more weeks according to the doctor, but after they'd said farewell to their neighbors the family had readied for bed. As Lena was getting into bed, her water suddenly broke and Gordon rushed her to the hospital. The baby was breech and the doctor's advised that they'd need to perform a caesarian section to save both their lives. Gordon informed them to do whatever they needed to do to save both of them. Minutes stretched into hours, but a nurse finally came out. "You have a son, Mr. Gosnoll. Mom and baby are both doing fine."

Gordon strode behind the nurse as she led him towards Lena's room. Lena looked weak and pale beneath all the white sheets on the bed, but she radiated a tired happiness as she cradled their newest son. "What should we call him?" Gordon's eyes crinkled as he smiled down at his wife and child, and he pecked the top of her head with his lips.

"I liked Thomas Oliver when you mentioned it some weeks ago."

"But which spelling, Thomas or Tomasz?" Gordon considered that for a moment. "I think we should go with Thomas," Lena stated before he'd had a chance to respond.

"Whatever makes you happy sweetheart. I'm just glad that Oliver wasn't up for debate. I do love that story."

"I like Oliver Twist as well, and isn't it just wonderful that it matches so well with my father's name." She scrinched up her nose as she giggled at her comment.

Gordon thought about that exchange as he stood at home with his wailing son. Lena was resting. The doctors had been adamant that she be allowed to rest and recover, which is why it was just Gordon and all his boys this evening. None of the children were happy. Frank didn't understand why Thomas looked different and Norman was just unhappy at sharing or maybe it was because Thomas had a healthy set of lungs and he wanted God himself to know it. Gordon smiled at his new son as he set about trying to soothe him.
