People tend to praise Eggman from Unleashed alot, but tbh he's... dare I say... "widely inconsistant" in that game.
I wouldn't use that term, since his characterization is fine, but his usage in Unleashed is definitely a mixed bag.
The intro cutscene is fantastic for both Eggman and Sonic. As is the Werehog's fight with the Egg Dragoon, on top of Eggmanland as a whole. But on the other hand, he sits out much of the middle portion of the game, SA-55's snark is more overtly mocking than Orbot's and thus can easily paint the doctor as a bumbling fool, and Dark Gaia fulfilled its obligatory role of literally swatting him away. Sonic also shrugs off being tricked by the doctor very quickly.

Not exactly a headcannon, but I wanted to talk about my thoughts on the 'Eggman doesn't plan ahead' view that's been going around because of idw. I feel like one of my personal favourite Eggman moments in the entire series, the sonic unleashed opening, kinda disproves it. Eggman was clearly surprised that Sonic had the emeralds, and if he had known sonic had them he wouldn't have attacked him as directly as he did. Despite this, he still had a machine on standby capable of defeating Super Sonic! By strategically fleeing to it he essentially turned the battle's tide in seconds, and would have literally have killed sonic if the almost powerless emeralds hadn't gotten him through atmosphere re-entry. It's a brilliant display of cunning, and I believe it soundly proves that he is capable of backup plans.
Also, gotta love how casually he tries to kill sonic. He makes a joke about his new werehog look, and it's out the airlock with him. Ruthless.
Yeah I don't think people remember that Eggman was genuinely expecting Sonic to die from that fall,
(Also gotta mention that I love how this is just another of the million examples that Eggman does actually really want to kill Sonic, won't be sad when he dies, and will just continue with his plan lol)
The capsule exploding in space in SA2 would especially guarantee his death and would be more satisfying but in the spur of the moment, he expected that simply tossing him out would work too. Plus, Sonic was indeed saved when his fall was stunted by the aura of light from the emeralds around him and Eggman had no way of knowing it could happen. They say that tossing the emeralds out was an oversight and SA-55 sasses him for it but I gotta defend him because I just don't know what else he could've done. Try to grab the emeralds with Sonic still there? Sure, they fell with him when it would've been better to keep them but at least he wouldn't be a hassle, if he'd died as he hoped.
I feel Eggman did expect Sonic to have the emeralds on him though, he looked surprised when he used them maybe because he didn't expect him to use them right there and then or to make it seem believable and not like he had a trick up his sleeve. But it was all part of the clever trick to lure him in with an epic space battle to the place where he'd extract the emerald energy from Super Sonic and use it to break apart the planet and release Dark Gaia. I love that sly bastard moment, it's also something else that really proves he can have a solid step by step plan but it's overlooked because of the emeralds and last minute Dark Gaia betrayal.
But even so, Eggman wasn't just sitting around for no reason during the in between of those moments that get criticism, unlike in the Metal Virus arc where Eggman was just like "eh I'll figure something out later" and didn't even seem to care. In Unleashed, he was still trying to get to temples before the emeralds could be restored, was also building Eggmanland- on top of the last one which makes it even harder, and had multiple robots sent out and used by him to stop Sonic, and he was specifically waiting for Dark Gaia's pieces to come to him. The last thing he was doing was giving up and doing nothing. And all that counts for him being able to smartly plan ahead too.
Eggman is overconfident, can be a bit reckless, and can make oversights but he knows how to learn from it and improve and he isn't careless and lazy if he notices an issue that can result in his plan falling apart. He knows when to wait and when to act, he's smart and quick thinking, he always fights as hard as he can until the end and will have an idea of his plan step by step that's often with research and preparation, often has backups and extra tricks in store, is ready to adapt to sudden changes of plan when it's not pre-planned, and remains determined to succeed. It's a big part of what's so admirable about him. He does all that just for people to say he never has a solid plan!
So yeah, there was really no truth to how he was handled in the Metal Virus arc, it's not accurate to how he is in the games. Literally every example I've seen people try to give from the games doesn't prove their misconceptions, in fact in every single game they mention, there's actually stuff that blatantly disproves and shows otherwise that they fail to acknowledge or mention. It boils down to them misinterpreting/ignoring/forgetting parts of canon, making stuff up, or expecting him to always 100% accurately predict everything in situations where it literally couldn't have gone any differently because he's a genius but he's not a psychic lmfao
And yeah gotta love how casual he was about it too, just "so long, friend!" And then tried to kill his ass lol

what a humongous jerk
yeah basically he Is the Egg-Dragoon, or just Auto-Dragoon now. Similar to the idea I had with Bomber Barabara, Eggman Mechs in Hangin Out have personalities, but are essentially always on a leash with a pilot involved.
Orbot was made as a heavily restricted on-board AI for the mech you see Eggman using in the opening to Sonic Unleashed, which I headcanon as having been upgraded to the Egg Dragoon later on.
Orbot later streamlined the design, and got it to something much less clunky and over-designed. This was both for his own aesthetic tastes, and also so I dont have to Die drawing the Dragoon with all of those goddamn details and headlights like seriously why does it have so many headlights it’s Obnoxious!! you dont NEED all those!! wtf
anyway. he does like the intimidation-factor, so made sure to keep the spikes, and design the new addition of the head as something.. adequate. The wings are optional. Kind of nonsensical to have them out at all times given the energy needed to keep so much metal in the air. Still split on giving it the tail it has in Generations, though
In any case, he totally swears he doesn’t just want to be Big, and that the manhours spent building this thing was “to make an excellent tool for construction and demolition”. Which it is, but. yknow.

i love that guy! He appeared in Sonic Unleashed and then was presumably dismantled and his AI was turned into Orbot and Cubot’s... or at least that’s my headcanon.
He’s more robotic, sassy as hell, and probably listens to Hatsune Miku (me too tf?)

Drawing Sonic british book characters part 3.4: Zone Rangers. WE'RE FINALLY DONE!....... with the second book....
Whew! Finally the final set for Zone Rangers with R0-55, aka. Ross, and their little parasite of a companion.
Now, Ross was one of the whole reasons why I chose an Unleashed setting specifically to put Zone Rangers in. Their name is just perfect to go along with SA-55, so I made them a Cubot precursor. Put them in a little spinning chair both to give the illusion of tallness and to contrast SA-55's stillness to its control panel (that is, until the end of Unleashed). In the original, R0-55 was made by Kintobor before the whole Chaos disaster, but I think in this setting Eggman just forgets their existence and Ross goes full E-123 Omega and simply dgaf anymore
The gremlin that lives inside their chest just exists to make their and Sonic and Tails' life worse.

Imagine Sonic Unleashed, but Eggman's plan fails and he never gets Eggmanland built because he brushed off SA-55's report on the construction difficulties and slacked off, and he brushed off SA-55's report on the construction difficulties and slacked off with the justification that things were "KIND OF going according to plan"?
IDW's stupidity with Eggman has made me slightly appreciate his otherwise upstaged portrayals more than previously, for at least not utterly breaking the character himself apart.
Emphasis on slightly though. I'm still not letting SA2, Unleashed, etc completely off the hook for endorsing the trend of being usurped by less interesting villains and monsters in the first place. ;P
