Town Gossip Ghost Edition #2

Not much, just that I enjoy seeing ghosts of old heirs and the founder. In one of those days, I catch Fendi at the graveyard mourning for both himself and Roxie, before haunting Prada's grave. I guess, he was always a mama's boy.

Later, Danzig meets grandma Roxie for the first time and she bullies him because:

Roxie: Do you have any idea of how long has it been since my last grilled cheese sandwich? EONS!

Danzig: ... How's that my problem?

Danzig should be content that he didn't have to be raised by her.

Here's some various panels and doodles from my scrapped comic! I started it peak pandemic and really quickly it became stressful to work on, and I really tried but I do not enjoy drawing digitally. The flow of the pages was really bad, everything felt stiff and uncomfortable. I want to redo this comic traditionally but colored digitally to give it another shot! I made the characters and plot for this story ages ago and I really want to bring it to life in a way that I actually enjoy :)

Rogue/Thief Character Arcs

As promised, the character arcs of different classes.

Once again, my use of the classpect system is mainly for storytelling purposes. This means, analysing characters to understand their motivations and choosing classpects for characters that would reflect the way they will be written in a story.

Now, onto Rogue/Thief character arcs.

Central Concern

Each of the character arcs have a general concern. That's the guiding question for this class, and how they'll interact with their aspect as well as the central theme of the story.

For Rogues and Thieves, this question is, "Who am I?"

Rogues and Thieves live in a world that is oppressive and controlling for them personally, or for people like them. Sometimes, the world is blatantly cruel and uncaring of them.

Rogues may feel that they are at one with the world and can navigate it by keeping their head down, but this world is actually stifling them in some way.

Internal Conflict

For Rogues and Thieves, the internal conflict is the central one, especially if they are the protagonist. Their arc revolves around emotionally breaking free from the world they are currently living in, and finding their own way of life.

External Conflict

Each story still needs an external conflict that brings internal anguish onto the material realm. For Rogues and Thieves, their internal struggle manifests as something that will change or limit the life of the character. It is almost always personal in nature, rarely presented as something that would affect everyone.

(But of course, we can always extrapolate the individual to ourselves or others in the same group. These conflicts often feel low-stakes, but nothing could be higher stakes than someone finding the truth of their own soul.)

Usually the external conflict is easily resolved once the internal conflict is taken care of.

The Rogue

The Rogue answers the central concern with mostly indifference. They will often say, "I don't know who I am, and it doesn't matter." They can survive just fine by keeping their head down, and why not take the path of least resistance?

The Rogue is a passive class, and easily falls into the "damsel in distress" archetype.

Rogue Examples

Roxy Lalonde lived under the oppressive rule of Her Imperial Condescension. She stole food for the people and lived harmoniously in the world with no plans to change either her own or others' living situation. When she meets up with the rest of her session's players, she stays out of interpersonal conflicts and doesn't step in even if she is personally uncomfortable.

Truman Burbank from The Truman Show lives in a fake world designed to quash his desires to explore and be free. At the beginning of the film, he acquiesces to the life chosen for him, not taking any steps to free himself.

End Goal

The goal of a Rogue (whether they know it or not) is to become who they want to be. They often need to be inspired by others in order to do so, but their ultimate goal will be to save themselves.

In my above example, Truman leaves his world to find freedom and truth for himself, no matter how painful. He didn't need to be saved, he needed to be free.

The Thief

Thieves answer the central concern in a more proactive way, being an active class. They answer, "I know who I am already, and I'll do anything to keep it that way."

They are prone to aggressive action, and will use all the meagre tools at their disposal to continue living the life they want. These characters often fall into the "vixen" archetype (which may be why the fandom as a collective seem to hate Thief players. They are underhanded, and manipulative--because that's all the tools that they have.)

Examples

Vriska Serket is a prime example of a Thief gone seriously off the rails of their self-discovery journey. She cycles through different interpretations of who she thinks she is and who she wants to be. Each time manipulating whoever she could to play out her fantasies. But none of these are authentically her. She doesn't know who she is, and Hell will freeze over before she admits that.

The final part she wanted to play before Terezi's retcon was to be the hero of her session that defeats Jack Noir. Although Terezi warns her against it, she willfully manipulated and dismissed the concerns of other players to get what she wanted.

Mei-Lin Lee from Turning Red is another example of a Thief. She used others to fulfil her image of herself as a good and dutiful daughter. She works with her friends to purchase tickets for 4*Town, but when her actions did not line up with her image of herself, instead of facing the music, she throws her friends under the bus. She was unable to confront her identity both as a teenage girl, and as a daughter.

End Goal

The end goal of a Thief is to let go of false pretenses and become their authentic selves. Once they do so, there would be no need to manipulate or lie, because everything they do is true to themselves.

At the end of Mei-Lin's journey, she shares her true self with her family and is surprised to learn that they accept her just the way she is.

Conclusion

Although the Rogue and Thief classes hold the least amount of external power, their stories can be the most powerful. It can even be revolutionary to weigh the internal journey over the external conflict. As Rogues and Thieves break free from their world, they may find that the world has also changed around them, to make space for the wonderful and authentic individual they have become.

Chinastuck: the beta kids

tl;dr for the uninitiated: what if all homestuck characters were chinese people

John Egbert: 光勇 (Guang Yong). Lives in Beijing (im sorry /j). Han, Mongolian, and some Korean ancestry.

egbert means "bright edge" and guang means "bright" and also sounds a little like john even if its the surname. john means god is gracious, which is not really a type of name chinese people give their kids so i just went with a common masculine name that sounds good with guang: yong, which means "brave" which i thought was fitting. i think dad egbert definitely calls them by the diminutive yongyong.

June Egbert might choose the name 小玉 (Xiaoyu), meaning "little jade", in reference to her sister.

Rose Lalonde: 刘秀兰 (Liu Xiulan). Lives somewhere in Jiangsu, probably Shanghai. Hmong, Jewish Han, and Kazakh ancestry.

i literally just went with a random common surname that vaguely sounded like lalonde here. xiulan means elegant orchid, so it's a flower name like rose and i think it fits her vibes. she shares the character xiu with roxy's name, tianxiu.

transmasc rose probably steals his name from a book character.

rose is very similar to canon i think, except she lives in a penthouse in central shanghai. i want to say initially she feels her heritage doesn't matter to her but later in life she tries to reconnect with not being "100% han".

Dave Strider: 赵大伟 (Zhao Dawei). Lives in Chongqing. Hmong, Jewish Han, and Kazakh ancestry (same as Rose).

zhao has a similar meaning to strider and was also a surname of the emperors so it has a connection to royalty. this works for both the lotr reference and king david. dawei is... a generic chinese boys name thats the name you give your kid if you want their english name to be david. it means "extraordinary".

david means "beloved" and every single chinese name like that is feminine. Dove Strider takes this as inspiration for the name Xinyan, spelled either 心燕 meaning "beloved swallow" or 心焱 meaning "beloved flame" instead of the more conventional 心妍 meaning "beloved beauty".

dave struggles with their cultural heritage more actively than rose does, and thus leans hard into their sichuanese identity. i headcanon them as making fun of chengdu (chongqing's rival in representing the cultural center of sichuan) in addition to making fun of northern chinese culture. SICHUAN RAHH

Jade Harley: 林玉平 (Lin Yuping). Lives in rural Shaanxi. Han, Mongolian, and some Korean ancestry (same as John).

lin has similar meaning to both harley and halley, meaning grove/forest. yuping means "peaceful jade".

Jude Harley might choose the name 洋 (Yang), meaning "ocean" in the sense of expansive, or he might not feel a need to change his name. swapping names with his sibling is also a possibility.

i think her upbringing just translates to the rural northwest well? also i think its kinda cool she'd grow up near a section of the great wall of china. i could see her engaging in cultural traditions like papercutting and folk singing :> also buddhist jade real and true im not projecting trust

Fairy type happens to be the most recent type added (*kof kof* DLC *kof kof* ?...) But when you come to think about it, it's been already 10 years since X & Y came out and since Fairy was first introduced ! Time flies ! And to this day, I still think that our very first Fairy Type Trainer, Johtonian now Kalosian as well, Valériane, is still on the spotlight.
