55 years ago... Apollo 7 Apollo 7 commander, US Navy Captain NASA astronaut Walter "Wally" Schirra became the only astronaut to have flown on Mercury, Gemini and Apollo spaceflight missions, totalling 12 days 7 hours in space! Wristwatch-wise Schirra was the first to wear an Omega Speedmaster during a spaceflight as he wore his personal CK2998 during the 1962 Mercury “Sigma 7″ flight. But he always enjoyed Rolex, as between missions he was often pictured wearing his GMT-master 1675 Pepsi. This 1968 photo shows Walter Schirra posing with a Hasselblad camera for the upcoming Apollo 7 mission. Rolex magazine and Niccoloy found out Schirra wore his personal Rolex Daytona 6240 chronograph, look closely at the screw down pushers in the cut-out! (Photo: NASA)

Rolex watches during the Apollo program January 31, 1971 Apollo 14 launch day suitup shows Edgar Mitchell putting on two extra personal Rolex watches underneath the fireproof underwear of his A7LB space suit, one on each wrist, besides the NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster  chronograph already strapped over his left forearm. Photos showing Mitchell taking a break before putting on the Apollo fishbowl helmet of the A7LB spacesuit, show he tugged each personal wristwatch nicely underneath the fireproof underwear. Apollo 14 footage shows Edgar Mitchell wore the GMT-master continuously, also onboard Lunar Lander "Antares". In July 1966, during Gemini X, astronaut Michael Collins was the first astronaut to wear a wristwatch underneath the spacesuit. Rolex has the most different space-flown wrist watch versions, as at least 8 were worn in space (GMT-master, GMT-master II, Datejust, Daytona 6263, Submariner, Sea Dweller, Yachtmaster and Oysterquartz). February 13, 1923 – 2023 Remembering record-setting USAF test pilot Charles “Chuck” Yeager on what would have been his 100th birthday. On October 14, 1947, World War pilot Ace Lt Yeager broke the sound barrier with the Bell X-1 and followed the X-project up to the hypersonic X-15, which he never flew. Yeager, who never attended college, was never selected as an astronaut but was awarded numerous decorations. Between 1947 and 2020, Charles Yeager always wore Rolex pilot watches spanning a period of almost 75 years. In this 1962 Edwards AFB photo he wore a Rolex GMT-master with pointed crown guards. Although retired since 1975, Brig General Yeager remained a USAF consulting  testpilot and always broke the sound barrier on October 14, be it in modern day jets, as he will aways be remembered as the first pilot to fly supersonic and greatest pilot of all times! 76 years ago... X-1 broke the sound barrier On October 14, 1947 the experimental Bell X-1 aircraft was dropped from a B-29 bomber and 24 years young test pilot Yeager fired all four chambers of the X1 engine in rapid sequence in order to accelerate towards that "Old Demon" that lived in the Sky! The demon lived at Mach 1 on the meter, 750 miles an hour, where the air could no longer move out of the way... but Chuck Yeager blew a hole in the sky breaking the Sound Barrier ! Charles Yeager had named the rocket engine-powered X-1 "Glamorous Glennis" after his beloved wife. Although he retired in 1975, Yeager remained a USAF consulting testpilot and always broke the sound barrier on October 14, be it in modern day jets. Yeager the first pilot to fly supersonic ! Charles Yeager was a watchlover with a keen interest in Rolex pilot watches, which he wore since the 1940s... 75 years with a preference for the Rolex GMT-master true pilot watches! Charles Yeager passed away on December 7, 2020. He surely was the greatest pilot we ever saw... RIP ! (Photo: USAF/AP)

60 years ago, NASA astronaut John Glenn Japan goodwill tour Between May 19 and June 1, 1963 NASA astronaut John Glenn toured the island of Japan and had his vacation in the land of the rising Sun. Glenn had completed communication support for the MA-9 Faith-7 mission onboard the tracking ship “ Coastal Sentry “. Mercury astronaut John Glenn’s goodwill tour  was meet with great enthusiasm. This event did not go unnoticed to Rolex, as the company wanted to release a watch in tribute to the spacefarers as Rolex had commemorated legendary explorations to the summit of Mount Everest and the Arctic. In response to the Japanese fascination with astronauts and spaceflight related science fiction, Rolex launched a small production run of the “Space Dweller”, which was a modified version of their Explorer model. However, this model remained a Japan-only special edition as it was not released into Rolex’s complete world market. Glenn continued to wear the Rolex GMT-master 1675 during his political campaign to become Senator for the state of Ohio. (Photo: NASA)

1968, December 24 ... Christmas with Apollo 8 Five NASA astronauts man the CapCom - Capsule Communicator console in the MOCR - Mission Operations Control Room at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston Texas. Astronauts Michael Collins, Kenneth Mattingly, Harrison Schmitt, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin look on as Collins was CapCom at that moment. Vance Brand, Gerald Carr and Fred Haise later also acted as Apollo 8 CapCom. On December 21, Apollo 8  had entered Lunar orbit and after circling the Moon 10 times on Christmas Eve, it was time to come home. On Christmas morning, NASA awaited confirmation that Apollo 8's engine burn to leave Lunar orbit had worked successfully. Note, during that important moment, Michael Collins was still wearing his personal Rolex Turn-O-Graph pilot watch on steel Oyster bracelet. (Photo: NASA)
