60 years ago, Ian Fleming December 17, 1963, London Heathrow airport, British author of the James Bond novels Ian Fleming (1908-1964) checking out an early copie of his latest book “On Her Majesty Secret Service”. Fleming was on his way to “Golden Eye” , his winter retreat bungalow in Oracabessa at the North coast of Jamaica. Unfortunately, it proved to be the last winter vacation enjoying the Caribbean Sea but a stay during which Fleming meet American ornithologist James Bond (1900-1989) author of “Birds of the West Indies”. Fleming was a keen bird watches and owned a 1947 copie of the book, using the author’s Anglo-Saxon name for the hero of his successful spy novels. Fleming offered the ornithologist a copie of “You Only Live Twice”, writing on cover page "To the real James Bond from the thief of his identity. Ian Fleming, Feb 5, 1964 (a great day)." 1963 had been a busy year for Fleming, as the novels became movies he had visited the “From Russia With Love” film set in Istanbul and enjoyed the premiere of this 2nd Bond movie in October 1963. Back in England by spring 1964, Fleming spent his last days enjoying golf & the country side in Kent. Note Fleming wore his Rolex Explorer 1016 wrist watch on a 7206 steel bracelet. The Rolex Explorer was the watch Fleming described in the James Bond novels and after his death, the watch resurfaced in 1981. Military (Field) Saatler

Military saatlere karşı gittikçe artan bir ilgim var. Yalınlık, kolay okunurluk ve sağlamlık gibi özelliklerinin yanı sıra şimdiye kadar hiçbir saatimde kullanmadığım kronograf özelliklerinin olmaması da bu saatlere olan ilgimi artırıyor. Karmaşık, fonksiyonlarla dolu, iri saatlerin modasının geçmekte olduğunu belirtmeliyim.

Military saatlerin bireysel kol saati tarihinde çok büyük bir önemi ve yeri var. Günümüz dünyasının pek çok unsurunu şekillendirmiş olan II. Dünya Savaşı kol saatleri kültürünün de oluşup yaygınlaşmasında büyük pay sahibi olmuş. Dönemin askerleri için üretilen saatler "Military Watch" kavramını ortaya çıkarmış. Kadranları son derece yalın ve indisleri de genelde fosforlu olan bu "tool watch" kategorisine bu nedenle askeri saat deniyor. Buradaki önemli detaylardan biri de genelde saat rakamlarının da bu kadranlarda kullanılıyor olması. Muhtemelen kulağa militarist gelen bu tanım zamanla "Field Watch" olarak güncelleniyor.

Bu konuda daha sonra "Nato Kayışlar" ile ilgili de yazacağım. Öncesinde kategoriyi temsil etmesini arzu ettiğim, görseldeki saatten bahsetmek isterim. Gördüğünüz model 2022 yılında revize edilip piyasaya sürülen yeni Tudor Ranger 39 mm. Rolex'in kardeş şirketi olan Tudor, Rolex gibi Hans Wilsdorf Foundation'a ait. Tudor bazı modellerinde Rolex parçaları kullanmasıyla da biliniyor. Ancak bu model safkan bir in-house model yani makinesi de Tudor tarafından üretilmiş.

Hem metal bilezik hem de deri hem de Nato kayış seçenekleri olan bu saat bence kategorinin en pahalı modellerinden biri olan Rolex Explorer'dan daha çekici ve özgün bir model.

Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical - Bu modeli güzel kılan kompakt olması ve elle kurulur bir model olması. Bu da saate farklı bir deneyim

Hamilton Khaki Field Murph - Nolan'ın Interstellar filminde babanın kızına Mors alfabesiyle hayatın anlamını (!) yolladığı bozuk saat. Hiçbir bozuk saat Murph kadar ünlü olmamıştır sanırım.

IWC Spitfire - İri saatleri ve pilot dünyasına olan yakınlığıyla öne çıkan IWC'nin tasarım ve ölçüleriyle çok ideal bir modeli.

Seiko Prospex Alpinist (SPB121) - Japon dağcıların Alpler'de yapacakları tırmanışlar için üretilmiş ama saat meraklıları tarafından çok beğenilmiş bir model.

Timex Expedition Scout - Quartz, ekonomik ve rahat. Pahalı military saatinizi takamayacağınız her yere rahatça takabileceğiniz, ucuz ama yakışıklı saat.

Bulova Hack - Markanın ne yaptığı, neye dönüştüğü biraz kafa karıştırsa da tasarımındaki sadeliği ve military köklere bağlılığıyla beğendiğim bir saat.

Longines Heritage Military - Günümüzde Longines'in ultra geniş saat koleksiyonunu "heritage" adında ısıtıp ısıtıp önümüze yeniden getirmesi biraz sıkmaya başlasa da, vintage kültürünün büyüdüğü bir ortamda bu modele kayıtsız kalamadım.

Omega Railmaster - Cephe değil sahada savaşan demiryolları personeli için üretilmiş bir model. Bence oldukça iyi bir field watch.

Vintage Rolex Explorer on Hodinkee

May 1962... Adventurous explorers of the extremes meet up. 70 years ago, May 29 - 1953, two members of the British Himalaya expedition, New Zealand mountaineer.beekeeper Edmund Hillary and Nepali-Indian sherpa Tenzing Norgay conquered Mount Everest / Chomolungma (8,8 Km high). 63 years ago, January 23 - 1960, Swiss oceanographer/engineer Jacques Piccard and US Navy officer Don Walsh reached the deepest point in Earth’s ocean, Challenger Deep in Western Pacific Ocean (10,9 Km deep). Outside the bathyscaphe submersible “Trieste”, a Rolex Submariner diving wrist watch survived the extreme pressure at the Ocean floor. Moreover, Jacques Piccard often wore two Rolex watches, one on each wrist. Between 1933 & 1953, Himalaya expeditions had been sponsored by Rolex, so Rolex 6098 watches were worn to the top of Mount Everest, but British-made Smiths A409 wrist watches were worn on the top of Mount Everest. However, already on January 26 - 1953, Rolex had patented the name “Explorer” for their upcoming line of time only watches.
