hold on | J.Hughes
Tumblr media
summary; just when Jack wants to give in, you tell him to hold on just a little longer
warnings; suicide, talks of death, ambulances, hospitals and substance abuse.
I took a more soft approach than I intended
Read at your own discretion
-
Jack should feel so blessed.
He has a great family; his two brothers and parents doted on him from day one, he had his dream job that he’d worked on for years and his friends were the very best friends he could’ve ever asked for.
So why did he feel this way?
Why was he allowing a girl to break his heart and make him feel useless.
Jack Hughes. Useless.
Layla had told him over text that she had slept with her roommate while he was away on a road trip to California. Jake. Fucking Jake.
Jack knew he wasn’t gay, like Layla had told him so many times when he brought up their flirting.
Jack didn’t want to tell anyone what happened, not on the road. He didn’t want the pity stares and the second guessing of his game.
So he kept quiet throughout the roadie. His game tanked in San Jose, he heard the comments in the media;
fraud
fake
not good enough
There was a break in games when the devils returned home, leaving Jack to sit with his own thoughts. Layla had attempted to visit but he wouldn’t let her in.
He let the media consume him, the news articles and TikTok videos. All calling him out for not being good enough, he was a bust.
His feelings started almost subconsciously. When he was out at the store he would pick up bottles of painkillers as if he’d not bought bottles the day prior.
He began ‘forgetting’ to call and text his family and friends. His way of preparing them to never hear from him again.
People began to get concerned for him, he wasn’t himself.
A week into his depressive episode Jack tried to get back out there. He ventured to Raya.
He started talking to a model, she seemed nice and they organized a date only for him to show up and she couldn’t stop talking about followers and social media, how being with someone famous like Jack would do good for her.
Jack paid the bill and he left.
Just another girl who saw him as nothing more than just another pretty boy.
The bottles lined up on his bathroom counter, caps off as he stared at himself in the mirror. His eyes were red and bloodshot and his palms were sure to have cuts from his grip on the marble countertop.
He took them, all of them.
The empty plastic bottles clattered against the floor once he’d tossed them, his chest heaving while they slipped down his windpipe.
He was sobbing and he wasn’t sure why. It felt right. To cry and mourn the life he was taking away.
It didn’t happen all at once. Jack expected it to happen faster but he felt fine.
He found his phone, texting ‘i love you’ to his friends and family. A few replied with similar
Others, his brother Quinn questioned him
what do you mean? what’s wrong?
Quinn called him. He declined.
Quinn called again. He declined again.
Quinn text. And again. And again.
When Jack declined Quinn’s call for a third time, he called 911.
“Hi yes my brother, he’s acting weird and I think — I think he could be hurting himself”
Jack sat on the bathroom floor as the pills slowly worked their way into his body, his fingers began getting numb and he became drowsy.
He didn’t know what was happening but he heard a lot of yelling and the door of the bathroom flew open.
On the other side of the door was you, chest heaving as you stared down at him
“My god, dude your doors are heavy!”
You dropped to your knees next to him, pulling out liquids and needles while you simultaneously turned jack towards the toilet bowl.
“Who?” Jack slurred.
“It’s okay sweetheart, I’m here to help. My names y/n, I’m a paramedic. I hear you’ve got an awfully concerned big brother” you explained, using the time he was distracted to slip the needle into his arm while held the liquids he was about to need.
“I Just, Go! I want to die!” He demanded, shoving you as much as he could.
You shook your head “I can’t let that happen Jack, You have so much to live for”
“No” he cries “I hate you, stop!”
You turn him towards the toilet bowl once more and you say “You’re about to hate me so much more”
And before he can question you, you shove two of your fingers into his mouth and hit the back of his throat. He gags and tries to pull your hands out but you grab the back of his head and stop him
“I’m sorry Jack, I hope you’ll forgive me at some point”
He’s puking all over your hand and although he’s in no position to, he feels embarrassed.
Once he has vomited a sufficient amount your second paramedic has arrived with the gurney.
“C’mon bud let’s go to the hospital” you mumble, helping him up. He holds onto you, his hands are shaking and you can hear him softly sobbing.
Your heart breaks for him as you watch him, confused, sit on the gurney and be strapped down.
When he’s loaded in, he’s looking around as if he’s looking for someone. You smile as you go to grab the keys from your partner when Jack reaches out and grabs your hand
“Please don’t leave me”
You nod, jumping in the back with him.
You sit in silence for a while, filling out forms and checking his meds until Jack breaks the silence
“You’re not gonna ask why I did it?”
You hum “It’s not my place to question you”
“You’re not curious?” He presses.
You sigh, putting down your clipboard
“Do you want me to ask? Do you want me to question why you, Jack, hate your life so much to want to end it? What, because you’re a hotshot hockey player you think mental health can’t touch you?” You reply.
Jack physically gulps “how did-“
“Jack, you’re worth so much in this world. More than hockey! You’re gonna be a dad one day and get married? You’ll take trips across the world with your friends and you’ll do loads of exciting shit!” You exclaim, the smile on your face put one on Jack’s
He looked down at his hands and you huffed before standing to adjust his saline bag
“It was a girl” he mumbled and you frowned
“Huh?”
“It was a girl that I was getting to depressed over”
You tut and sit back down on the bench
“She doesn’t know what she’s missing! You seem like a great guy Jack and you have a caring family, your brother was really worried about you is what dispatch said”
Jack’s lips created a thin line and he hummed before he said
“Do You do this a lot? You were really calm today”
You chuckled softly “You are the first suicide attempt I’ve ever been to and I am actually having a major panic attack internally right now”
“Oh” Jack’s mouth creates an O shape “Sorry about that”
You brush it off with a soft smile.
“You’ve got so much to live for Jack, I promise”
Once you’re at the hospital and he’s being pulled out of the ambulance he grabs your wrist once more, bringing your attention to him
“What do i have to live for? Tell me”
You give him a smile and hold his hand
“It’ll happen Jack, just hold on”
“C’mon baby, just hold on a couple more-“
“He’s here!”
You throw your head back and cry out “Jack! What does he-“
“He’s so perfect baby, he’s fucking beautiful” he cries, kissing your head repeatedly.
That night, the rooms quiet and jack is sitting in the chair next to you while your son sleeps soundly on the other side of the room.
You look over to Jack and give a sleepy smile
He smiles back and said “was this it?”
“Was this what?”
“Me holding on. Was this what I was holding on for?”
Your face drops remembering that day
“Was It worth it? What I described?”
“It Was everything and more, thank you for saving my life in more ways than one”

Ok so usually these things about fic stats give me a mild depression because my stuff is very niche, but I'll do it anyway because I'm still in my writer's block and I would love to do a self rec of what I wrote in the past.
Tagged by the always lovely @bambirex : Rules: give us the links to your wonderful words with the Most hits/Most kudos/Most comments/Most bookmarks /Most words/Least words
Ok, the fic with "most" everything is Down in the Dungeons, followed by There's a Cottage in the Woods (Witches AU) so I'll list the 3rd in position to have some variety:
Most hits: (752)
1977, Queen are touring in America for their new album News of the World. Everything is going right, but Deaky feels homesick and misses his family a lot. Based on some pics of NOTW John holding Robert, that episode when he cut his arm and some interviews where he says he loves to bring his family on tour. MY FIRST FIC 🤣💕💕💕 Please, I wrote much better things later 🙏🏻 go read those and not this.
Most Kudos: (58)
Veronica has a date with her boyfriend, but she has to pick him up at the recording studio. This is the perfect occasion to finally meet his bandmates! Written for the first Johnica week! 🥰💕
Most bookmarks (10, and it's actually the 2nd after DitD):
1985, while Queen are working on their new album A Kind of Magic in London, John can spend some time at home with his family. One night Veronica wakes up after a nightmare with a high fever and John decides to take care of her instead of going to the studio. Everything is very fluffy and they love each other a lot, that's it. Ahh this was my 2nd fic! 🥺🥺🥺
Most Words (11,345) and most comment threads (25):
It's the summer of 1971, John Deacon has joined a band called Queen in early March and at the end of the same month he also found another dear friend in Veronica, who he secretly love much more than just a friend. The band is now touring in Cornwall with girlfriends and a bunch of roadies, and John finds himself face to face with his new friends, their new audience and the girl he likes. His life is changing, and it's all up to him to make it a great experience. Written for the 50 Years of Queen event, multiple prompts included.
Least words (691):
KING!AU: It's almost Joan's birthday and Veronica wants to make her a special gift, one that will (hopefully) last forever. (Ahhh the tattoo ehheh)
Numbers for comparison:
Down in the Dungeons: Words: 153,094 - Hits: 8,515 - Kudos: 302 - Comment Threads: 171 - Bookmarks: 32
There's a cottage in the woods (Witches x Monsters AU): Words: 13,444 - Hits: 1,560 - Kudos: 74 - Comment Threads: 42 - Bookmarks: 8
Thanks for tagging me Bambi! I tag @beydeaks @freddie-mercury-rising and @john-paul-george-ring0 💕💕💕

✨💫💌 for the recent writer ask?
✨What's a fic you've posted you wish you could breathe life into again and have people talking about it? (or simply a fic you wish got more credit) Two come to mind: 1. I posted One Wave at a Time really quickly, and I feel like fics suffer for that--not enough build up time between chapters. Like binging versus releasing episodes weekly. 2. The other that jumps to mind is me and Roadie's Big Bang: Missives From the Planetary Capital of New Daxam, Home of the Great Queen Rhea, Gracious and Benevolent Imperial Majesty of the Empire of Daxam, Long May She Reign. BEST TITLE EVER, first of all. And second, Big Bang's are amazing cause all of this completed work is dropped at once, but I know there still lots of Sanvers fans who haven't read it. So if you're looking for a literal dystopian novel featuring some of the Supergirl cast, look no further!!
💫what is your favorite kind of comment/feedback? When they quote the fic back to me!!!! LITERAL GOD TIER.
💌share something with us about an up-and-coming work (WIP) that has you excited! Well I have five things in progress at the moment, which is TOO MANY: 1. Finishing Splice World! My draft is done, now just need to revise it and start updating the old chapters with the edited versions! 2. Next chapter of the Bar Across the Street, which tbh I have not started yet 3. Continuing to rewrite Revelations for the literal 5th time from scratch (this is IT though!!) 4. Revising and finalizing my 4th book, Alice, and sending that out to publishers YAY 5. Continuing to draft my 5th book, which is a pure musical theater nerdery indulgence project, which is at about 40k.

AMA Character Edition ~ Answers Part 1
Here are the first few questions! You can still ask your own :)
Q1: What are everyone’s favorite comfort meals?
A1: This one is weirdly the same for all of them: beef casserole.
The reason it’s the same is because it was Beverley’s speciality (and not *always* beef), and she’d make it for her favourite family members. So if Gran made you casserole, or you came over to find there was casserole for dinner/tea, you knew she was pleased with you, or you were in favour somehow. It was also mind-bendingly delicious.
Carrie has casserole when she goes over for tea, and that’s her first proper home-cooked hot meal in months. She later learns how to cook it, and the others then get it from her on request, so it is then un-weaponised as a meal and becomes one with positive associations, that they can just have whenever they want it. Since they all know the context of the original meal, which is unspoken between them but just a Thing they understand from their family dynamic, it’s The Meal that they sort of re-appropriate/reclaim for their own.
Tumblr media
Q2: Give me a fact about ricky that you’ve always wanted to give me but haven’t told me yet? feed me specifically
A2: Originally – and I don’t know if this is canon or not – Ricky actually lost his virginity to Sasha Shaw who collected all the cousins born in 1990 (same year as she was). They were 15, he was wasted and doesn’t really remember. It lasted less than 2mins. It happened the day he caught Wes and Layla at Aunty Em’s house, and was probably in response to that on some level, and a total waste of time for him, which is another reason why he doesn’t ever think about it or have any feelings about it whatsoever.
Tumblr media
Q3a: Tell us about songs that various characters would not listen to most of the time except for when they are feeling a certain kind of masochistic.
A3a: Carrie wouldn’t listen to Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell unless she was feeling like she really needed to cry.
Ricky wouldn’t put the radio on at all unless he was exceptionally lonely and needed some sound.
Wes only listens to angry emo rock when he’s incredibly pissed off/certain kind of depressed and needs to sike himself up for something: then it’s usually Fall Out Boy, MCR etc.
Katy is pretty easy about what she listens to, but she hates Summertime Sadness and Boys of Summer equally, and wouldn’t listen to them unless she wanted to torture her soul.
Q3b: If they could, what instruments would everyone play?
A3b: Carrie would play piano (always wanted to, never learned, but the house had a music room with a piano forte, and it remembers). Ricky – not sure. He whistles bird calls canonically so maybe the flute, but I think he’d like to play something with strings that requires dexterity, maybe the violin. Wes – electric guitar. Katy: drums.
Q3c: And to keep running with the music theme, if everyone were to be in a band, who would do what and what would the band name be?
A3c: Something along the lines of Gods & Monsters, or Young Gods & Old Monsters?? It would be alt/emo/glam rock, ironically for Wes in canon. Something like that. Maybe a cross between The Struts and My Chemical Romance.
In this AU, Wes would be the frontman, lead singer/guitarist. Katy on drums, Ricky would be versatile and be the band member who can pick up any instrument and play it really well. If he’s musical in this AU, then instruments would be his hyperfixation. I think Carrie would actually be a roadie, a PA, or part of the team in a backstage way, and that’s how she and Ricky would meet and get together. They may have another band member, but unsure!
This would be a very “Rock Star Romance” type narrative but potentially told through interviews and memoir extracts, with the band on tour promoting a new album, with episodic dramas like Carrie rescuing Ricky from various self-destructive behaviours and situations, keeping Wes from going totally off the rails, and making sure Katy doesn’t get arrested and attends her anger management therapy sessions. She would definitely have slept with Wes multiple times in this AU but it wouldn’t be anything serious – FWB I think – but her and Ricky would be the solid partnership by the end.
The AU novel would be the same name as their band, I’m leaning to YGOM, and I think it would read a lot like a rock star autobiography or a bio compiled by a superfan in the industry/someone writing about their father and his life for Reasons. Ricky would still be ace, but I think would feel a lot of pressure to “overcome” his sex aversion which would lead to him being very self-destructive until he learned to be comfortable in himself, and possibly with a kid he didn’t know he had until later. I think, though, it would turn out to be Wes’s kid, not his, and that would be a fairly dramatic but typical episode that underlines the narrative arc peppered with a lot of sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. Everything, ironically, that Ricky says he doesn’t do in THE CROWS.
Gerald’s place in the narrative would be taken by his guitar, which would be a character in the story. I think that Ricky writes the songs, and Wes has a lot of input, but Ricky’s got that creative spark and is a gifted lyricist in particular. Some of his scenes alone with his guitar would have a Ricky/Gerald dynamic, I think, in terms of it being a mask to his deep loneliness and dissatisfaction with the lifestyle he’s got, but he doesn’t know how to change it.
I’m not sure what Fairwood would be in this narrative, but leaning towards the guitar merging Gerald/Fairwood for narrative purposes, but it would be more metaphorical. I think Ricky would definitely have a “dream home” he wants to buy and live in with Carrie, and that’s a ruined manor in the countryside that he wants to do up and have as his project outside of the studio life.

Play It Cool - Tyson Jost (35/n)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Tyson Jost x OFC (AJ)
Warnings: Language? It's 3am I can't remember honestly. Nothing graphic, but mentions of Damar Hamlin's injury.
Word Count: 2,929
Need to back up to Chapter 34? https://brainrattlers.tumblr.com/post/705091282371018752/play-it-cool-tyson-jost-34n
Start from the beginning at https://at.tumblr.com/brainrattlers/play-it-cool-tyson-jost-1n/p7no8u1hzuza
Author's Notes: AJ is feeling a little trapped in the extended stay hotel, and is taking a step toward finding a more permanent place for she and Tyson in Buffalo. Tyson's on a roadie, so while she's missing him, she's also enjoying a few things she doesn't get to when he's around. Short chapter this time around, especially after the really long one last week. I'm thinking I'll probably write a "What We Didn't See the First Time" extra to make up for this one's length.
It was an eventful journey back to Buffalo from Edmonton, but thankfully Tyson and AJ made it safely.  Let’s just say there were a lot of phone calls and trying to find connecting flights that would eventually find their way to Buffalo once the airport there finally opened. (And yes, the two cooked dinner AND did the dishes together that first night home!)
The next morning, Tyson made it to practice with the rest of the team. Thankfully everyone had made it back safely. Those that were still without power were staying in hotels downtown. With the travel ban lifted, it was announced that the game against Detroit was not only on, but was welcoming fans if they could safely make it out.
The city had been through a lot in the last week - this was a glimmer of normalcy that was needed.
AJ decided to go to the game, as there wasn’t a whole lot to do at the hotel by herself. Donning her new hoodie she got for Christmas from Tyson, she found herself at KeyBank Center up against the glass for warmups, holding a simple piece of paper emblazoned with a symbol and a handful of letters.
TYSON   ❤
With a wink and a tap of his recently kissed fingers of his glove against the glass, Tyson skated by, picking up a puck to shoot at Luukkonen. The lack of individual attention didn’t even bother AJ - it needed to be a good night, and she didn’t want to cause Tyson to lose focus. The team as a whole was putting in the work - they’d been off a week due to the storm - and needed to keep their eyes on the prize to get the W that night.
The Sabres were on their A-game the first two periods, scoring five, including an assist from Tyson. (And caught AJ’s glance, giving her a nod before joining the team at the bench to celebrate.) But the third period was a bit stressful with the Red Wings scoring three in a row. Thankfully an empty-netter by Okposo (and subsequent hat trick) solidified the Sabres win.
AJ made it back to the hotel first, shedding the clothes she wore out in favor of some soft sweatpants and tee, throwing the hoodie back on for warmth. Turning on Hulu, she turned on the new season of Letterkenny, catching a couple episodes before Tyson made it back home. Something in the intro of episode three made her absolutely squeal in delight.
The intro was a comedic play on NHLers’ names, fitting in with the new menu at the fictional MoD3an’s bar. Big names were thrown around, historic and current. Nate was in there, not unexpectedly. But right in the middle of it, Tyson’s name was mentioned in reference to something being served with Tyson Toast. AJ absolutely cackled and replayed the intro a few times, proud that her fiance had made his name known enough to make it into their skit. She was absolutely ecstatic to get to play it for Tyson when he did get home.
After the episode ended, Tyson dragged AJ to bed, knowing she’d probably try to stay up to watch the remaining few episodes, and all he wanted was a celebratory kiss and snuggles that night. He too was still decompressing from the trip to Edmonton and was lacking sleep. With the team leaving again the next day for the start of a three-game roadie, AJ was more than happy to curl up to Tyson’s back, draping her arm over his torso as the big spoon. She felt his body loosen up as he drifted off to sleep.
Not wanting to miss time with AJ, Tyson woke up early before practice, waking her up as well to make breakfast together. Nothing fancy, some oatmeal and fruit was shared between the two. A good night’s sleep followed up with a warm breakfast and a conversation about what was going to happen in the next few days for each of them left Tyson feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on the next few days.
“Big plans for while I’m on the road?” Tyson was genuinely curious as he knew AJ was getting a little stir-crazy around the hotel.
“If it’s okay with you, I’ve got a couple apartments and townhome viewings I’m hoping to set up.”
The smile on Tyson’s face was huge. He knew how difficult it was for AJ to feel okay putting roots down somewhere, considering all the upheaval for her the past couple of years. This was a big step for her. He nodded in excited approval.
The pair talked about what they were wanting in a new place, where the last place was weak, and budgets.
“Speaking of that, I’m thinking I might start advertising some freelance IT work again, see if I get any nibbles. It’s time I start contributing again.” AJ wasn’t feeling comfortable with how Tyson was just taking care of everything, and she was running out of her own money too. “I know you said you wanted to be able to just take care of me, but… you know I don’t work that way.”
Tyson felt a little down about it, because he really did mean it. He wanted to give the world to AJ so that she was free to do whatever she wanted. To him, her helping around the home as well as getting the old place packed and hauling stuff - that was more than enough contribution. He was going to have to accept the fact that she WANTED to contribute, that she felt useless just flitting about. She needed to have purpose in her own mind.
Tyson looked deep in thought, quiet, as he took in her words, finally letting it sink in that maybe her independent streak was a blessing in disguise somehow. It looked like he was staring at his empty oatmeal bowl. AJ reached across the table and touched his hand, bringing him to the present from wherever his mind was. His eyes met hers, nodding.
Trying to get the mood lighter again, Tyson shifted the conversations back to the new home hunt.
“Send me pics? Maybe some video? I wish I could go with you… stupid roadie.” Tyson was a little frustrated, but also knew that the roadie was part of his job.
“Of course, I want you to help make the decision too! Also it’s not like I’m going to just choose one on the spot and make you move in without seeing it in person first! I’m just going to get some ideas, and if I find one I like, we’ll go see it when you’re back.”
The corners of Tyson’s mouth were starting to crack into a smile.
Looking at the time, it was the point of the morning when Tyson was going to have to depart to practice, and then would head to the airport after. It was getting easier again for AJ, especially knowing she had things to do to fill the time, rather than watching TV and playing Fortnite aimlessly.
With a suit jacket over his hoodie and his backpack on his shoulders, AJ latched onto Tyson for a long hug. He rested his forehead on the bridge of her nose, knowing this was one of her favorite feelings. A soft kiss on the lips and the tip of her nose was the signal he had to get going. Whispers of “I love you” were shared before the heavy sigh from the two increasing the distance between them.
As Tyson walked out the door, AJ followed to the doorway, watching him head toward the elevator. He blew a kiss before turning the corner, smiling as AJ “caught” it and put it in her pocket for later.
Hearing the elevator doors close, AJ headed back inside, shutting the door. With a deep inhale, she picked up the dishes that were left on the counter and washed them out before the oatmeal became concrete at the bottom of the bowls. Looking around at the studio, she remembered just why she was going to contact property management companies to see some rentals. Pulling out her laptop, she started browsing what was available in a few areas of the city that the two had talked about moving to. Emails and phone calls were made, setting up a few appointments.
At nearly the same time, AJ’s stomach was alerting her to it being lunch time, and her phone buzzed alerting her that Tyson was finishing up with practice, heading to the airport.
Tyson: Wish you were coming to Boston. We could get some baked beans!
AJ: Don’t fahget to pahk the cah on Havahd Yahd. lol
Grabbing some lunch on the way to the first apartment appointment, AJ looked at the listing again, unsure if it was really what she would have been looking for, let alone Tyson. But she was going to keep an open mind. Touring the location with the management rep, she snapped a few photos and sent them to Tyson.
AJ: Location 1. <3 attachments>
Tyson: Hmm. You’re not saying much.
AJ: I didn’t want to sway you one way or the other.
Tyson: I think your lack of saying anything tells me a lot. I’m not feeling this one though. Getting ready to take off. If you look at any others, send pics still. I’ll see them when we land. ILY
AJ: (heart emoji)
One more location to look at that afternoon, and AJ was liking that one more than the first already. She even took some video and sent everything to Tyson’s phone, knowing he’d be landing soon - Buffalo to Boston is a short trip.
Tyson: This one is nice, and I think you like it because you sent video this time. Add it to the “check out together” list. On the ground, call you tonight babe.
While looking at places to live, AJ kept an eye open to businesses in the area to see what was there. Is it mainly retail? Food? Actual offices? Ideas were brewing in her head, but for now, just finding a place to call home that wasn’t an extended stay hotel was the priority. Before heading back to the hotel, AJ snagged some groceries, things that Tyson wouldn’t (or shouldn’t) eat. Getting to have ravioli with Alfredo sauce for dinner was a small reminder of why Tyson going on roadies wasn’t all bad.
Tyson called a bit later via facetime after coming back from dinner with a few guys on the team. He found AJ was on the sofa, buried in a fleece blanket, and could see her bowl propped on her knee.
“I see you’re eating likely something you wouldn’t eat in front of me, am I right?”
“Maaaybe. How’s Boston?”
The two chatted for a good hour before Tyson had to call it a night, needing to get to sleep early as the game was an early start due to it being New Year’s Eve. He could see AJ was struggling with something.
“You’re making that face babe, what’s wrong?”
It hit AJ hard that she wasn’t going to be able to kiss Tyson at midnight. The whole tradition of midnight kisses with the one you’ll spend the next year with was about to be broken.
“Going to miss kissing you at the stroke of 12… If I could get to Ottawa, I would.”
“You want me to get you a ticket to Ottawa?” Tyson was being serious, but knew she would turn it down anyway, especially knowing she had a few other rentals to look at. “How about… when I get home, we set a clock to 11:59, and have our own countdown?”
Leave it to Tyson to come up with something so simple, but effective, to make AJ feel better. With a nod and smile, he knew that things would be alright.
Wishes for sweet dreams and good sleep were shared, and the call closed out. Tyson laid in his hotel bed, staring at the ceiling, trying to figure out a way to make their faux New Years Eve perfect. Thoughts swirled around in his head, until he couldn’t stay awake any longer. He luckily had a couple days to think about it.
AJ couldn’t sleep for some reason that night, but got up early as rest was eluding her still. Hitting the gym, she pumped herself up to look at another apartment Saturday morning, getting her back to the hotel in time to watch the game. Photos of that location were sent to Tyson, but she knew she wouldn’t hear back until afterward, when the team would be packing it up and heading to Ottawa. (Don’t tell Tyson, but she might have slept through the game, honestly. She didn’t miss much, at least, other than an OT win. In fact, her watch vibrating against her wrist woke her up.)
Tyson: On the plane, heading to north. Hmm. This place looks okay, but I’ll let you decide if it is one I need to see in person.
AJ: I think I need to look at a couple more first, it might go in the maybe pile. Get some sleep!
And with that, AJ needed to figure out what she was going to do for her New Years’ Eve in. Queuing up a movie on Netflix, AJ ordered a pizza and settled in for the night. Falling asleep on the sofa again during the second movie she had playing, that damn watch woke her up again. Grabbing her phone, she found it was 11:58PM, and Tyson was trying to Facetime again.
“Couldn’t NOT see my babe at midnight!” Tyson’s eyes were blurry with sleep, as he set an alarm to wake himself up in time. He had opted to stay at the hotel rather than go out with some of the others on the team. “You ready to count it down?”
AJ laughed. Not her ideal midnight, but it was better than nothing.
And with the clock counting down 5 4 3 2 1, AJ could hear the fireworks going off outside of the hotel as the clock hit midnight. She leaned in and kissed the lens of her phone camera, and could hear Tyson chuckling a bit, following suit and kissing his screen too.
“I think I’ll still take that real kiss when you get back. Now back to sleep with you! I don’t want you struggling tomorrow night, er, I guess tonight. Kick some Senators butt tonight Jost.”
“Only because you told me to. Happy New Year, babe. Can’t wait to see what this year has in store for US. Sleep well babe.”
AJ did indeed sleep well, waking up almost around noon. Due to the holiday, she wasn’t going to be able to look at any other apartments that day, and instead had a lazy day. She crocheted a few rows on the blanket she was working on, she watched movies, she took a bubble bath. Throwing on a pair of pajama pants and Tyson’s burgundy hoodie, she readied herself for the game that evening. Unfortunately, even though Tyson had a few good chances to score, as did the rest of the team, it just wasn’t in the cards to win, resulting in a 3-1 loss.
Three more properties to look at on Monday, filling up a lot of AJ’s free time that day. She liked two of the three, and sent MORE photos to Tyson. He agreed on the two she liked as well, adding them to the list to check out together.
Speaking of Tyson, the team made it to DC, for the final game of the roadie. After the loss in Ottawa, they were hungry. Afternoon skate was intense, and a lot of weaknesses from the Ottawa game were addressed. It was a long day, and Tyson was happy to just crash for the night. Unfortunately, a bombshell was dropped that another pro athlete from Buffalo had collapsed on the field in Cincinnati, and it wasn’t looking good. It made for a long night as one of their own, even if it were a different sport, was hanging in the balance.
The next day, while the news wasn’t great, it wasn’t terrible either. The outpouring of love for Hamlin was incredible from all over the country, and world. The team had shirts made showing their support, wearing them as they entered the arena that evening. Washington continued the wave of support, offering up a moment of silence to honor Hamlin. The Sabres were playing this game for Damar.
And what a game it was - exciting as it was back and forth (although honestly if you’re playing in that game, it’s gotta be frustrating)... but Tyson tied it up middle of the third, eventually taking it to overtime. Tage scored his third, earning a hat trick and winning it in OT. A hard fought battle, but they were victorious in the end.
Tyson was never so happy to get home though after an emotional couple of days. Their flight wouldn’t be leaving until the next day as the Sabres would not be playing until Saturday against Minnesota (another reason to be emotional but that’s for the next chapter). But as soon as the flight touched down, Tyson was the first out of his seat, and trying to be the first off the plane so he could get to the temporary home and have his real New Years kiss with the woman he wanted to spend the rest of the year with.

I just listened Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend podcast with Bri- I'm sorry Professor Brian Cox. I'm big fan of him and got excited when I saw he's in the new ,episode. One of my favorite TV personality and one of my favorite physicist together again! I was waiting him just talking about his project in CERN and Horizons, of course.
I know he was in some bands from his old interviews and all, but I didn't know he was in the supporting band for Jimmy Page in 1988. And not just that, wait for it! He met George Harrison!
Short story: His old roadie going to the bar for drinks and someone pushed in to him. So his roadie says "Fuck off. My round!" to this person and this person is GEORGE HARRISON!! And George replies to him "I've never been told to fuck off since 1962." and buys all of them drinks. 🤣🤣
I MEAN WHAT?! George's reply couldn't be much more him!!
Also that little moment with Professor Hawking is just precious and hilarious. 😅💕

I'm still in shock... You need to listen the podcast, it's fucking amazing. I love him more and more every day. (Spotify link)

Title: Josie and the Pussy Cats
Seasons: 2
Episodes: 32
Run Time: 30 Mins
Original Air Date: September 12, 1970 - December 23, 1972
Synopsis:
Josie and the Pussycats featured a teenage all-girl pop band that toured the world with their entourage, getting mixed up in strange adventures, spy capers, and mysteries. The group consisted of level-headed lead singer, songwriter and guitarist Josie, intelligent tambourine Valerie, and air-headed blonde drummer Melody. Other characters included their cowardly manager Alexander Cabot III, his conniving sister Alexandra, her cat Sebastian, and muscular roadie Alan.
Each episode found the Pussycats and crew en route to perform a gig or record a song in some exotic location where they became mixed up in an adventure. The Pussycats usually found themselves in possession of plans for an invention, an item of interest to the villains, a secret spy message, etc., and the villains chased them to retrieve it. Eventually, the Pussycats would ruin the villain's plans, resulting in a final chase sequence set to a Pussycats song.
Season 2:
In September 1972, a sequel spin-off series titled Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space debuted on CBS. This version of the series launched the characters into outer space. Every episode centered on the Pussycats encountering a strange new world where they would encounter and often be captured by various aliens before escaping and attempting to return to Earth. A typical ending for an episode is that they meet a wise benevolent person who reprograms the ship's course for Earth, only to have a clumsy action by Alexandra (or occasionally Melody or Alex) set the ship on the wrong trajectory again.
My Rating: 10/10
My Reasoning:
I LOVED this show so much growing up! I still love it. It again has Scooby-Doo vibes, but I think that's a common theme with Hanna Barbera cartoons. They had a format that worked and ran with it in as many ways as possible. Even though some of the characters are a bit one-dimensional at times, I feel like they are still relatable and likable. Even the "mean girl" Alexandra is likable to some extent. At least, in my opinion, she is. Maybe not to everyone else lol.
Also, the second season is an interesting twist on the show. So I like that they were able to continue it and keep it a bit fresh. The songs featured in the show were also good. I honestly believe that most people would enjoy this show. Especially if you like Scooby-Doo.

Why is Surreal Estate doing this to Zoeey like she keeps getting in fights with Susan and then it’s resolved! Until the next episode when they do the same thing. And like August was also really nasty with the roadie in so it’s weird only susan had to apologize?
And yet I feel like the show is annoyingly susan centric like I get they seem to focus on Luke and Susan but could we see Zooey and August and Phil’s lives more?
And we had to have Susan leave a place where she dates her boss and then she’s got a crush on her new boss? Gag me

New Beginnings
Working in the creative industries means a job is rarely ever just a job. It’s rarely ever a clock in, do the work, and go home situation. Often, you’re putting a piece of yourself - if not all of yourself - into this idea. You watch it grow. You see it unveiled in quite a spectacular fashion, birthed into the public eye. So when something comes to an abrupt and unexpected end, I’m guessing it feels a lot like a breakup. Though I can’t say for sure. I’ve never been on date.
So in that tradition, on a hot summer night in June, I was sitting on the floor of my new half-unpacked apartment in front of the TV, watching the massacre of the Jedi Order in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, a ridiculously large bowl of ice cream in my hands. I’m not crying. I’m not even sure if I’m sad. Adrift, maybe. Unsure. A little scared. Stubbornly content. Primarily wondering…
What now?
If I were looking at my life like the plot of a movie, I’d find the timing of the upending of my life to be… sensibly timed? It seems to be happening to a lot of my friends on this cusp bridging age twenty-nine to age thirty. Two close friends of mine have been let go from jobs they’ve had since they graduated college. Another two friends are getting married. One is selling her house, quitting her job, and moving across the country with her boyfriend (while everyone else is wondering why they’re not tying the knot before they go). Even I just formally moved out of my parents’ house, narrowly avoiding the dreaded cultural scenario where I’m a thirty year old still living in my childhood bedroom with my Star Wars bedsheets. Not that I really minded. But I’ve been accumulating so much (Star Wars) stuff over the years and I’d hit this groove in my career where things felt steady so… why not?
Then I quit. Was talked into un-quitting. And was then fired over the course of three days. My main gig - the thing that was supposed to pay for this new apartment of mine - was gone.
I typically say I’m not a creative person. No one wants to see my drawings. No one wants to hear me play an instrument. No one wants to see me dance or hear me sing. A few people want to see what I’ve written, but not enough to call myself a writer. I’m a roadie. A tour manager, specifically. I’ve been all across North and South America, dragging dozens of people and millions of dollars worth of equipment with me. Clubs, theaters, arenas, stadiums, I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen most of it with a crew that felt a lot like family, with whom I could sit teetering on the edge of my sanity and bone tired in a Walmart parking lot at 3am dreaming about what’s next.
The reason for my quitting in the first place was typical in a lot of ways. A tale as old as time. A rookie mistake on my part. No paper trail for agreements made on a handshake with someone I trusted. A string of missed payments. Bold attempts at manipulation. A boss who seemed to be living in a different version of reality from everyone else. This crew I’d come together with all had similar complaints. They all said they wanted to quit. But it was just me who was angered enough to actually do it. And that’s just how it is sometimes. Everyone needs to live with their choices.
The good thing about all this is that I’ve been doing what I do for ten years now. I’m confident enough to say I’m good at what I do. But I’ve also seen enough to know that being good doesn’t cut it. So now I’m leveraging my connections for all they’re worth while also rapidly attempting to expand my network, get my hands involved in as many things as possible. There’s some really promising stuff just beyond my reach that would start a whole new adventure for me. That’s how I’m choosing to look at this.
Perhaps my twenties were just a trial run. A very informative chapter of my life, to be sure. But now where there was once a castle is now an empty field where the soil is rich, my hands no longer soft but calloused.
Give me a little sunshine and a little rain.
Get ready because here I come.

The World’s Oldest Roadie
Author’s Note: I was also going to include ‘the world’s fattest roadie’ in the title, but then I remembered that Meat Loaf played a roadie in the movie called...well ‘ROADIE’, so I believe the distinction goes to him.
Who wouldn’t be thrilled to get a call from the band and be told that, unless I can get to the venue by six-thirty that night, the show won’t go on.
Well, maybe its not so dramatic when its just my friend, Joe, who has a ‘band’ (I put band in quotes not because they are bad, but because they haven't actually played for an audiences). Turns out, they needed someone to, basically, hit the record button, while they practice a set of Christmas songs (with me as the only audience member).
Let’s see Meat Loaf make a movie about that (oh, wait...sorry).
Back to the band.
As mentioned, my friend Joe, and two of his friends, jammed (hip music reference) on this particular night in a rented small space in Flemington, New Jersey. The venue is called ‘DIY’ (Do It Yourself), which is where people could rent space for art shows, personal performances, and small (very small) concerts.
Fun fact, at the original ‘DIY’ location (this is its second incarnation) I was in a staged production of ‘The Chinese Restaurant’ episode from Seinfeld. I played Mr. Cohen (‘Mr. Cohen is always here’).
How did I end up in a staged production of a Seinfeld episode in Flemington, New Jersey? Well, that’s what happens when you, off the cuff, mentioned to one of your daughter’s friend (who, at the time, was an aspiring director – now a director), ‘Hey, did you know I was a theater major in college?’
(continue reading after video)
Again, back to the band.
Once everyone arrived at ‘DIY’, we unloaded the equipment (by the way, coldest night of the year).
Personally, I was useless as they set up, so just wandered around and read the fliers on the walls. Once the equipment was tested, I waited for my instructions. Joe set up his phone to record their rehearsal. My assumption was I would start and stop recording before and after each song.
Not exactly.
Once I hit record before the first song, I was done for a long time.
The first three or four songs where good, only a few ‘No, wait, let’s start again…’ during the acoustic set.
After four songs, I hit the button to stop recording (I have a purpose!).
Then, with my ‘to-do’ list already packed, I was given a new task. One of their cellphones had recorded drum tracks; I had to push another button at the exact moment the song started. If I screwed it up, the entire song would be ruined.
By now, I felt like the fifth people Beatle.
After band member Dan switched from acoustic to electric guitar, I was given the ‘go’ sign and started the recorded drum track.
They started to play and, in my humble opinion, they sounded horrible – out of step with the pre-recorded drum track.
Amateurs.
Oh, wait – with my poor eyesight, I played the wrong drum track (hey, you get what you pay for).
Once corrected, the rest of the songs went off without a hitch.
After the last song ended, I proved that I was not a good roadie at all – I left them to collect their equipment, and went home.
I’m sure, when the time comes for them to play in front of an audience, they’ll have someone else push all the right buttons.
Rock On...

LITTLE PINK HOUSES YOUTUBE MOVIE
LITTLE PINK HOUSES YOUTUBE SERIES
He has a high level of curiosity, as he loves discovering and trying new things. The Pink Panther is often seen in episodes as a prankster, as he likes pulling pranks on the janitor whenever he's seen. (Years later, Little would overdub Niven's voice for Trail of the Pink Panther and Curse of the Pink Panther, due to Niven's ill health.) Most of the animated Pink Panther shorts utilized the distinctive jazzy theme music composed by Henry Mancini for the 1963 feature film, with additional scores composed by Walter Greene or William Lava. Rich Little provided Pink's voice in these shorts, modeling it on that of David Niven (who had portrayed Clouseau's jewel thief nemesis in the original live-action film).
LITTLE PINK HOUSES YOUTUBE SERIES
In an earlier series of the Pink Panther animated cartoons, Pink generally remained silent, speaking only in two theatrical shorts, Sink Pink (one line) and Pink Ice (throughout the film). The Pink Phink won the 1964 Academy Award for Animated Short Film, and subsequent shorts in the series, usually featuring the Pink Panther opposite the Little Man, were successful releases. The first entry in the series, 1964's The Pink Phink, featured Pink harassing his foil, a little white-mustachioed man who is actually a caricature of Friz Freleng (this character is officially known as The Little Man), by constantly trying to paint the Little Man's blue house pink. The animated Pink Panther character's initial appearance in the live-action film's title sequence, directed by Friz Freleng, was such a success with audiences and United Artists that the studio signed Freleng and his DePatie–Freleng Enterprises studio to a multi-year contract for a series of Pink Panther theatrical cartoon shorts. 1 DePatie-Freleng/United Artists cartoons.I don’t want a great big house, I’ve got enough of those. And I said, I’ll tell you what, if you find that little, teeny Spanish house.
LITTLE PINK HOUSES YOUTUBE MOVIE
He remembers discussing it with Goff, who was the one to locate the charming property in the first place: “I said, look, there’s a movie called One-Eyed Jacks and, in the movie, Karl Malden lives in this little adobe right on the ocean. you don’t even see that it’s there.”įittingly, it was a 1961 western starring Marlon Brando that inspired Mellencamp’s Montecito home purchase. “I spend a lot of time watching old films. (For example, a modern impressionistic painting by Donna Schuster can be seen above the mantle.) But the defining characteristic of the interior is a projector and screen setup. Some of the musician’s works can be seen on the walls, interspersed with softer pieces of art. Dark details, like hanging steel lights, punctuate the space. Mellencamp is particularly fond of his Montecito living room, which is decorated with brown leather chairs and tattered rugs. “Stuff you don’t see everywhere, Trevor knows what I like.” “They have really odd, old, one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture,” Mellencamp explains. Some of the pieces were sourced from Mellencamp’s three warehouses of furniture in Bloomington, Indiana, while others were purchased from purveyors such as L.A.’s Big Daddy’s Antiques. Here, Goff recreated his signature lived-in interiors: masculine, shabby furnishings with scatterings of industrialized references (for example, the Ridley motorcycle in the living room). I’m very lucky, I’ve lived an artist’s life.”)Īs with his other homes (which include residences in Indiana and New York), Mellencamp collaborated with his friend of 45 years, Trevor Goff. “I’m a singer-songwriter, that’s my real job, but I paint every day. A storage room was reimagined as an art studio for Mellencamp, whose paintings explore Americana through a lens influenced by the German expressionists of the 1900s. Mellencamp recruited his roadies to redo the three-bedroom house in three weeks, repainting the interiors in fresh white (including the brick and the wood beams). it takes a certain kind of colorful person to want to be up there. “You get this thing, particularly at night when the winds blow. Situated on six acres, the retreat is a remote one. Put more specifically, the former ranch is positioned on one of the peaks of Santa Barbara’s Toro Canyon, a perch which yields bracing views all the way out to the Pacific Ocean. “It does have a very romantic feel to it. “Quite honestly, I see it as a place for me to go with an invited guest,” he explains, from his suite at the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles. On his 1983 album, Uh-Huh, John Mellencamp sang, “Little pink houses for you and me, oh yeah, for you and me.” But, in 2022, the iconic musician is humming about a little white house in Montecito, California.
