TROS TRAILER BREAKDOWN
Here’s a collection of thoughts/things I noticed in the Rise of Skywalker trailer.
Tumblr media
We open with Rey ‘Jedi’ training, with the helmet and droid thingo which is a callback to Luke’s training with Obi-Wan: “Stretch out with your feelings!”. But since she’s dropped the helmet, looks like she’s surpassed what Obi-Wan taught Luke, or the training droid has gone crazy.
Tumblr media
This visually parallels the Force cracking the ground between Kylo and Rey on Starkiller Base at the end of TFA. Also Rey has the ‘red string of fate’ tied around her right-hand (which we also saw in the teaser, see below), so this is likely the same sequence of ‘Jedi’ training with Leia in the forest. ALSO related to the ‘string of fate’, there’s a damn rope there in shot running across the valley.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cool shot, it brings to mind when we were first introduced to Rey, scavenging a Star Destroyer on Jakku in TFA. I’m certain this is the Death Star ruins, because she does have her bag on her, which we know she brings with her to the ruins from the teaser footage (see below), and that also explains why she’s wet!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Those last 2 shots are from the first teaser trailer] Note: Rey, Poe and Finn all have bags, and Poe has an injured his arm and has wrapped his scarf around the wound.
Tumblr media
Poe is making a speech to the Resistance, and note he has his left arm injury properly bandaged now (the wrappings are white).
Tumblr media
Here’s a shot of the Resistance in a ship or hanger, and they look under attack as blaster fire shoots in the background. Most Resistance folks are running away, but (Dominic Monaghan), Connix, and Rose aren’t retreating but looking on at something horrible unfolding. Rose keeps moving towards what’s upsetting her (probs Finn being hurt less be honest), and it kind of looks like Dominic is calling “Rose” to get her attention and convince her to retreat to safety like everyone else. Also note that the orbaks riders are already there with the Resistance.
Tumblr media
Here’s Finn, Poe, and Chewy and it looks like they’re in the same forest that Rey’s training in, so this is probably the Resistance’s new “headquarters/base”. Note that Poe has his injured arm wrapped up in his neck scarf he wore on Pasaana, so he hasn’t given his Resistance speech yet, and both Poe and Finn have their saddle bags.
Tumblr media
She is one angry bean! Also, note no bag.
Tumblr media
Kylo/Ben’s Darcy moment. #imdead
Tumblr media
He looks SO sad and serious approaching her.
Tumblr media
He flips his lightsaber up and over slowly, so that the ‘blade’ is facing away from Rey, which to me looks like a “I don’t want to fight you” move.
Tumblr media
I have no idea what this iceberg floating in space is, but its visually EPIC. Note there’s some kind of ‘factory’ on the top left hand part, that is producing steam from lots of pipes. And there’s also some form of ~buildings~ underneath it too with steam also, but on the underside of the berg the structures are made up of cube forms. Is this perhaps where Palpatine’s headquarters is, secretly hidden in the Outer Rim?
Tumblr media
Here is Palpatine’s throne, which has the newly created ‘Sith’ symbol on the back of the chair. Also note that there is blue flashing lightning happening in the background of this scene.
Tumblr media
Here are an Imperial Star Destroyer powering up and rising from the icy cold water. Is this on the ice-berg?? This explains where the Imperial fleet came from that we saw in the teaser trailer. There is also blue flashing lightning happening in the background of this too.
Tumblr media
I don’t read/view any other SW materials besides the films, so I don’t recognise any these ships except the Falcon but this is obviously the Resistance’s fleet ready and assembled to fight Palpatine’s Imperial Fleet/The First Order.
Tumblr media
This is Rey in her bloat/ship going on solo to the Death Star ruins.
Tumblr media
Note Rey’s look of concern/disbelief in the background, at what Babu Frik is doing to C-3PO’s memories/system.
Tumblr media
That looks like a droid or person in shiny armour on the right, that captures BB-8′s and Dio’s attention in Babu Frik’s workshop.
Tumblr media
So the gang is in Babu Frik’s workshop all wearing big ass jackets, and Zorii Bliss is there so this obviously take’s place on Kijimi. And Poe is still wearing his scarf, which likely means that they haven’t visited Pasaana yet and he hasn’t been injured yet.
Tumblr media
They cut to this shot, bit this is not Babu Frik’s workshop, this is likely at the Resistance base as you can see the Resistance members in the background are in their beige uniforms, and those rebels/resistance green map/screens are visible too.
Tumblr media
Same with this shot, it’s not the same scene as the workshop. Poe isn’t wearing his scarf and jacket.
Tumblr media
Finn, Poe and Chewie are on board a First Order ship. Note the lighting panels look very similar to the ones in the Empire magazine photo of Kylo in the FO hanger (see below). Poe does not have an injured arm, and both him and Poe have their saddle bags on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Pasaana, during the speeder chase, BB-8 cuts into a cylinder of something that leaks yellow dangerous stuff. Also I think Chewie is in the background, so BB-8 is on his speeder.
Tumblr media
Rey is then seen throwing it at the following Storm Troopers that are trailing her on another speeder, and the two Jet Troopers in the air.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile on the other speeder, Finn C-3PO and Poe seem to be having a successful time against the Troopers. Note Poe is wearing his scarf, Finn has his saddle bag on, and C-3PO seems okay he’s cheering like Finn.
Tumblr media
This ship that is shooting at the First Order X-Wings and Star Destroyer looks very much like the Resistance Y-Wing seen in the lego that has the characters of Poe and Zorii, so one of them could be piloting this.
Tumblr media
Here we see an epic shot of BB-8, Finn, and Jannah leading her people on their orbaks on the side of ... a Star Destroyer?? Note the blue lightning happening in the background and the Imperial Fleet in the sky behind them.
Tumblr media
This is the Emperor’s throne room in the Death Star ruins, so this happens likely before their watery fight outside. Rey still looks pretty angry, with her saber lit, but Kylo/Ben is giving super patient vibes with no saber lit. HE WANTS TO SORT THIS SHIT OUT.
Tumblr media
Here’s Finn, with Jannah behind him on the similar Death Star ruins we’ve seen Rey and Kylo fighting on. Looks like Finn is yelling “REY!!!!”, maybe he’s watching their fight ensue. Or maybe she’s being captured again, mirroring TFA. He’s still got his bag on.
Tumblr media
Here’s Rey and Kylo destroying (on purpose or accident?) the stand that holds the charred Vader mask. Note Rey has a dagger in her left hand, and it looks to me like Kylo is reaching out with the force for the Vader mask with his left hand. Are the fighting over it, or both wanting to destroy it?
Tumblr media
Here Finn and Poe and C-3PO all look very serious, Poe has his gun out. We can assume this is Pasaana because of he’s wearing his scarf, and the cave’s colour/texture looks very much like the rocky formations of Pasaana (see below). The blue light cast over Finn on the left is likely coming from Rey’s lightsaber. This looks to be from the same scene as the image that was shown at D23 (see below). Also Rey, Finn, and Poe all have their bags on them!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here we get a true sense of how big this epic last star “war” really is. Again there’s more blue lightning in the background. (I don’t understand the science behind how the resistance members are breathing right now, maybe the ships are very low and still within a planet’s atmosphere?) Also I’m not a ship guru, but are they riding on a FO ship? What ever ship it is, it seems to be an ally ship, as not in the same formation as Palps’ Imperial fleet.
Tumblr media
Cue more trademark Palpatine blue lightning flashes. Ben looks SO cut up. He’s also very dirty which reminds me of this D23 photo of him (see below) where he also looks pretty miserable. He definitely looks like he’s stepping up to face something epic (probably Palpatine or Dark Rey) to help save Rey/the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we get Rey facing Palpatine, and he seems to be in an apparatus that is keeping him alive/helping him hover/stand/whatever he’s doing while he’s intimidating her. She looks so smol. There’s some runes carved on the floor. Also, there’s more blue lightning happening.
Tumblr media
Then lastly, we get this shot of Rey, with more blue lightning action. This shot is a little eerie, with the lightsaber reflecting in her iris making her look almost like an AI robot. But then faintly she smiles and it seems genuine.

The Eternals cast made an appearance at D23, with concept art of their costumes, and it was officially confirmed that Gemma Chan is joining the cast as Sersi and KIT HARINGTON is officially joining as BLACK KNIGHT / Dane Whitman🤩💫💫
The Eternals are an immortal alien race created by the Celestials who are sent to Earth to protect humanity from their evil counterparts, the Deviants.✨
In the comics, Dane Whitman inherited a mystical sword that carried a family curse - he took the Black Knight name to help restore honor to their family legacy & was a long time member of the Avengers in the comics (very on brand for you Kit). Sersi is a member of the Eternals, & had a romantic relationship with Dane Whitman / Black Knight in the comics.🖤

FROZEN 2❄️
We finally have some more details on FROZEN 2!❄️ At the panel at D23, it’s said that Frozen 2 centres on an important question - why does Elsa have powers? Additionally, the producers said that Frozen 1 and Frozen 2 come together to form one complete story. Here are the final bits of news from yesterday’s Walt Disney Studios panel at D23!
BLACK PANTHER 2🐾 No official title yet but the release date is set for May 6, 2022, with Ryan Coogler set to return as writer & director.
BLACK WIDOW🕸D23 attendees were shown a teaser trailer for BLACK WIDOW twice so far during D23. A 4-second clip leaked but Disney is taking it down. We also know Black Widow takes place following the events of Captain America: Civil War, as she finds herself on her own & forced to deal with “some of the red in her ledger”. It stars David Harbour stars as Red Guardian (a Russian super-soldier), Florence Pugh plays Yelena (a sister-figure to Natasha), and Rachel Weisz plays a Red Room spy. The movie is currently filming & is scheduled to be released May 2020!
JUNGLE CRUISE🍃D23 attendees were shown footage/a trailer for Jungle Cruise, an upcoming Disney live action film based on the popular Disney Parks attraction of the same name. There are apparently lots of references to the ride that it’s based on. The film is set during the early 20th century, where a riverboat captain named Frank takes a scientist and her brother on a mission into a jungle to find the Tree of Life which is believed to possess healing powers. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Jack Whitehall, Paul Giamatti, Edgar Ramirez, and Jesse Plemons. Jungle Cruise is set to hit theaters July 2020.
MULAN⚔️The live action adaptation of Mulan was discussed at the panel today, showing attendees clips that include the matchmaking scene & the recruitment of the Emperor’s army. Apparently lots of the animated film’s shots are recreated and the film feels like a Chinese epic. It only has instrumental music from the animated film, and Mushu and Li Shang will not be in it. Mulan is set to hit cinemas March 27, 2020.🏮

The Rise of Skywalker Teaser Trailer Analysis
First, I’d like to pat myself on the back for correctly guessing how the panel was going to go down, heh heh.  Just as a note, the “villains” didn’t appear at SWCA in 2015.  They were introduced at SDCC 2015 instead.  I think this could mean that we’ll see the “baddies” of TROS at a later con like SDCC 2019 or (more likely) D23 in August:  Adam Driver, Domnhall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, and Keri Russell, who I swear to God is playing a bounty hunter.
That “dorm room” poster and the character key leak from a few weeks ago were as I suspected 100% legit.
I had no idea though what to expect from the trailer itself.  I was and still am SHOOK.  OH MY GOD.  Of all the teaser trailers I’ve seen from Star Wars over the past 42 years, that one was the best.  I was shocked, I was surprised, and I freakin’ can’t wait.
Nobody got the title correct, aside from a rumor that said it was going to be called “Skywalkers,” like a silly 1980s spinoff sitcom.  Close but no cigar.  But really it’s perfect.
I’m going to tell my Reylos right now don’t listen to the C-students.  You know who the A-students are, the ones who have gotten everything right since 2016.  Right now the internet is awash with the usual super nerd dude crowd, the antis, the ReySkys and so forth with their lame or convoluted theories.  Teaser trailers often aren’t literally as they appear but too many people haven’t figured that out.
On a side note, Clayton Sandell, ABC news reporter and Star Wars fan, posted on his Twitter about an interview the cast that had appeared at SWCC did with Paula Faris that will air on Good Morning America this Monday.  1) Daisy said she had relayed to Abrams her thoughts on Reylo and it’s explored in “MUCH greater depth” and 2) while Abrams isn’t going to change the parentage reveal in TLJ, there is “more to the story.”  I suspected as much but fear not, I do NOT think this means Rey is Kylo’s sister or cousin.
The rest of this is observation from the trailer itself and speculation.  I do NOT know the plot.
In the opening shot, it might appear that Krazy Kylo is trying to run over our poor heroine with his Silencer.  But as many Reylos believe, I don’t think this is the case.  Notice you DON’T see Kylo’s/Ben’s face.  Rey shows no fear, but anticipation and determination.  Either Daddy is training Rey or she’s hitching a ride to go with him and kick some “a.”
The shot of Kylo punching someone in the gut while holding a lightsaber (typical) and NOT using his helmet indicates to me that perhaps this is a point where he has switched sides with a FO faction that has broken away.  The guy Kylo knocks down is coming at him.  It’s a defensive move, not the kind of kill-the-villagers or Rebels-where-they-stand stuff he’d been doing before.  Hmm.
Yes, that’s the remains of the Death Star our friends are looking at.  Is it Death Star one and it’s Yavin or is this the remains of Death Star II on Endor?  Will there be Ewoks???
I think those are Leia’s hands touching the medal she gave Han.  It’s interesting that Abrams said that they wrote scenes around the footage of her that they had.  It’s interesting how they managed to have Rey in her new outfit hug Leia like that; now that’s some movie magic.  I am a little concerned about Rey being teary-eyed, but Rey would cry at a YouTube video of cute kittens and puppies.
As for Luke’s monologue, this may or may not end up in the film as is and I suspect a snippet was actually cribbed from TLJ.  But I think 1) Luke is not just addressing Rey.  He is likely talking to Ben OR to both Ben and Rey, like a little pep talk and 2) I think we will see Luke doing this pep talk WITH OTHER FORCE GHOSTS.  That’s right, Anakin, Obi-Wan, Yoda, and maybe Qui-Gon.  You never know, we might even see the muggles in the Skywalker family tree (Padme?  Han???).  It might come down to just Ben and Rey to save the galaxy with their friends, but Luke is reassuring them they will not be alone in spirit.
Now for the line cribbed from TLJ...yes, he’s talking about Ben BUT it also implicates the trailer’s SHOCKING ending.  I knew that laugh the second I heard it.
Sheev’s.  Back.  And if you didn’t get it, Ian McDiarmid himself came out onstage at Celebration afterward.
Remember, if Shmi Skywalker is the matriarch of this clan, Darth Sidious was implicated in ROTS as the one who may have manipulated the midichlorians to conceive Anakin in the first place.  And it’s possible he may have done it to OTHER people and (hold on) Rey might be descended from one of his other guinea pigs.  And it’s possible that in some shape or way, Palpatine used that magic power to “cheat death” and has been causing #@$! all of these years.  He may have trained Snoke and ordered him to start messing with Ben in utero as well as mess with Luke, Leia, etc..  What if Ben and Rey find all of this out and it’s only together they can finally take out the trash, because it’s what the Force wants?  (In my headcanon, the Force can even use Dark Siders like Sidious or Snoke to do its will.)
As for the title Rise of Skywalker, it’s really funny how so many fans forgot KYLO IS A SKYWALKER.  This title screams Redemption without calling the movie “The Redemption Of Leia’s Dumbass Son” (credit The Farce Awakens). Several Reylos noticed that Kylo’s Theme plays as the title comes onscreen and it goes up in key, ending on hopeful notes.  This was confirmed by our resident professional composer Christy Carew.  There’s also this, but I’d take it with a grain of salt since John Williams hasn’t started composing yet.
Not only will he save himself, he will redeem his lineage.  He will, as he said in TFA, finish what Anakin started.  And Rey will be a Skywalker once Ben puts a ring on it and she has his babies.

Star Wars 9 New footage: Darth Vader’s Breath Heard
Star Wars 9 New footage: Darth Vader’s Breath Heard
Yesterday, at the Disney D23 Expo, a Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker sizzle reel screened for a few lucky fans and press. Beside the general commemoration of the series, new footage featured Rey looking very Dark Sidey with a red double-edged lightsaber like Darth Maul. But what was even more shocking was Palpatine’s voiceover, which said: “Now your journey nears its end.” According…

Star Wars 9 Theory: Dark Side Rey Is A Clone (& So Is The Original)
Tumblr media
Dark Rey has been revealed to be part of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in some capacity, and we think she - and the original Rey - could be a clone. Lucasfilm's sequel Star Wars trilogy will end this winter with the release of Star Wars: Episode IX. J.J. Abrams is back in the director's chair after previously helming Star Wars: The Force Awakens. His two installments, along with Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, will be the last three films in the Skywalker Saga. Making one movie in this franchise can be a difficult task on its own, but Abrams is attempting to wrap up a story that has spanned four decades of films and fan's imaginations.
Much of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker's plot is remaining heavily guarded by Abrams and Lucasfilm. But, one of the big reveals they have made is that Ian McDiarmid is back as Sheev Palpatine aka Darth Sideous aka The Emperor. His laugh was featured at the very end of the first trailer for The Rise of Skywalker, and he was most recently seen looming in the background of the D23 poster. This is establishing that Palpatine will be a big part of this movie in some form. Anything less than a substantial role for him will leave many feeling disappointed.
Related: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker D23 Trailer Breakdown
Well, one more major secret that was revealed was the new appearance of Daisy Ridley at the end of The Rise of Skywalker's D23 footage. She is shown in a black robe and hood with two red lightsaber blades in front of her face. Fans then were able to see a full look at her attire as well as her double-bladed red lightsaber, and it teased that "Dark Rey" is part of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The Star Wars fandom has been buzzing over this moment ever since, with popular assumptions being made that this is a Force vision. But we have a different theory about Dark Rey that ties together Palpatine's involvement - which may recontextualize a sequence from The Last Jedi.
Dark Rey Being A Vision Doesn’t Make Sense
Tumblr media
It's generally believed that Dark Rey is part of a Force vision. The rationale behind this line of thinking is clear, after all. Rey making an actual turn to the dark side would be too last second of a twist to throw into Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker at this point. But she could very easily see a possible future of herself where she's turned evil and embraced the dark side. It would harken back to Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back when Luke Skywalker fights a vision of Darth Vader on Dagobah, which ends with Luke's face being beneath the beheaded mask. As part of Rey's continued training, it wouldn't be the most surprising thing in the world to have her receive a similar warning sign.
If this were the case, though, it would mean that Dark Rey is likely only a minuscule part of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm's decision to reveal it, and how they did so, indicates otherwise. This shot wasn't lumped together in the middle of a montage - no - it was the tag of the footage and meant to drum up excitement. Most audiences will see this and expect Dark Rey to play a crucial part in how the Skywalker Saga ends - not something that will last a few seconds on screen. Subverting expectations can be great, but in this instance, it would be Lucasfilm misrepresenting what the Star Wars film is and putting themselves in position for fans to be disappointed.
So unless that is what Lucasfilm is doing, Dark Rey has to be a pivotal piece to The Rise of Skywalker's story. And for what it's worth, Ridley is teasing that Dark Rey is a legit part of the story, as well. This is where our theory comes into play. If it is true, then it could bring answers to some burning questions aboutStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - e.g., Rey's past and how Palpatine will return - and serve as a way for the Skywalker Saga, on the whole, to be tied up.
Is Rey A Clone Body For Palpatine?
Tumblr media
It's theoretically possible that Rey is one of many clone bodies created as part of an all-powerful army by Palpatine, which he could then use as a host body down the line. The idea of Palpatine using clones to stay alive is something that has been explored in Star Wars before, just not in-canon anymore. In the Expanded Universe, the Dark Horse comic series Dark Empire, by Tom Veitch, introduced the idea of Palpatine living through cloned bodies. He can do this by possessing a body of one of the clones of himself. Even though this story is not canon, it is a fan-favorite comic from the EU that Abrams could've pulled from. One of the recurring themes from various reports and leaks about The Rise of Skywalker is Palpatine's contingency plans, such as having an army in the Unknown Regions. Maybe this army is his second attempt at a clone army, and Rey is one of these clones who has somehow escaped.
Palpatine has used a clone army for his galactic takeover before, too. He helped see the mass production of the clone armies through and then used them to execute Order 66. This not only allowed him complete control over an entire army, but it could've also inspired the next step of his plan. In the time between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope, the Empire began ushering out the clone army in favor of regular Stormtroopers. But maybe that's because he decided to produce a brand-new, more powerful clone army instead. It is conceivable that Palpatine could've created an army of Force-wielders - possibly made up of DNA from himself, Vader, and more - who can do his bidding, but also for him to one day inhabit.
This would require Palpatine's spirit to be around still, though. Thankfully, Star Wars canon has explored the idea that spirits can possess artifacts, leading some to believe Palpatine's spirit is possessing Darth Vader's helmet that Kylo Ren has, while others point to the wreckage of the second Death Star as where his spirit may lie. Either way, this spirit jumping ability could be the Sith's way of cheating death, which could tie Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker back to Darth Plagueis. Inhabiting another body is undoubtedly an unnatural way to keep living that prevents someone from actually becoming immortal. Regardless, what we've seen from Rey - a naturally gifted and incredibly powerful Force-wielder - makes her fit the bill as someone who could have been created as Palpatine's ultimate weapon.
Rey Being A Clone Pays Off The Last Jedi
Tumblr media
Rey being a clone wouldn't just tie together several currently unconnected stories in Star Wars, but there is a chance that it would pay off a scene from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Fans were waiting to find out more about Rey's past and lineage heading into the film, which sees Kylo tell Rey that her parents were nobodies. He mentions explicitly they were "filthy drunk traders" who "sold you off for drinking money." This comes after one of the film's most distinct sequences, when Rey enters a cave on Ahch-Toh and tries to figure out who her parents are. When she first touches a dark mirror, though, Rey first sees a nearly endless line of herself.
Even though this may not be what The Last Jedi intended, this scene could retroactively be used as a piece of foreshadowing to reveal that Rey is a clone. That would explain why she saw so many copies of herself. Rey is one of many clones who are all similar. This could even possibly be taken a step further to explain why Rey sees herself on the other side of the mirror when asked to see her family. She reappears because Rey is made from another version of herself. More importantly, this would then be an example of Abrams building off of a seed - unintentional or not - left by Rian Johnson and not undoing The Last Jedi's story, which has been a concern for some.
Star Wars 9 Could See Rey vs. Dark Rey
Tumblr media
So if Rey is a clone, that could mean that Dark Rey is also a clone. The biggest questions this theory raises is why Rey was left on Jakku all those years ago and how Dark Rey came to be. As for the first part, Palpatine creating all-powerful, Force-wielding clones for his new host bodies likely means he didn't stop at two. For all we know, there could be thousands of Reys scattered across the galaxy. Maybe the entire Sith Trooper army is made up of Rey clones. That could be a bit too much for The Rise of Skywalker to get into, but a more straightforward approach could still work. Perhaps Rey was created after Dark Rey, but whoever helped Palpatine clone her turned against him and took Rey somewhere she could be safe. Then, it is possible that Dark Rey has been kept in hiding all these years with knowledge of Palpatine's plan and has been trained to be the most powerful Sith the galaxy has ever seen.
Whatever the case may be, these two different versions of Rey could then be the centerpiece of the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker's final fight. Strictly from an entertainment level, seeing Rey fight a Sith version of herself possessed with the spirit of Palpatine could make for an epic finale. Rey would be fighting against the person responsible for her creation essentially, with Palpatine's contingency plan, then, being used against him. And with Star Wars' themes of destiny, Rey going against her originally intended purpose could be a powerful conclusion to her arc. However, Rey is still learning the ways of the Force and could need some help to defeat Palpatine.
With that in mind, it's impossible to envision a finale to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that doesn't involve Kylo Ren, too. Since Palpatine may be responsible for his turn to the dark side, Kylo could feel spurned by the reveal that Palpatine had Dark Rey waiting in the wings. Could this reveal be what turns Kylo against Palpatine? That could work well enough to give him a redemptive finale where he helps defeat Palpatine, but out of jealousy instead of a more noble reason. Rey being a clone, if done correctly, could be an excellent way for Abrams to wrap up the Skywalker Saga. It could build off prior movies, answer big questions, and even make it so Dark Rey is something beyond a marketing gimmick. But only time will tell.

Skywalker rising: Breaking down the final trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX

Skywalker rising: Breaking down the final trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX
With less than two months to go until the premiere of “Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker,” the level of Star Wars hype in my household is officially off the charts. Even my husband, who isn’t a Star Wars fan, got caught up in my excitement and decided to go to the movie with me. I’ve got tickets for the first IMAX showing of the movie at my local theater in December and I recruited a crew of family members and friends to come along for the ride.
I didn’t need an additional trailer to convince me to go see this movie — the trailers released at Star Wars Celebration and D23 earlier this year were more than enough. But since I’m dying for any scrap of content related to this movie (and any additional clues regarding what the plot will be), of course I was excited for the final trailer that dropped last Monday.
I love the three trailers they’ve given us because they’ve provided a taste of what this movie will be like but still leave a sense of mystery. Although I have guesses now about what will happen in the film, I think there’s a lot of stuff they’re still hiding from us (we haven’t seen much of General Hux and the Knights of Ren yet).
Anyway, I’ve had a week to mull over this trailer now, and here are my thoughts. I’ve tried to stay away from leaks, and this post contains speculation only, no spoilers. But if you like going into a film with as few preconceptions as possible, this may not be the post you’re looking for!
The saga will end…
If I had to distill this final trailer down to two words, I would pick “magical” and “epic.” I loved how dark and challenging “The Last Jedi” was as a film, but I believe Episode IX will end the saga perfectly, on an emotional and uplifting note.
The new trailer opens with Rey running on a jungle planet (possibly Batuu?), with a super cool voice-over from Finn about the mysteries of the force. Since meeting her in “The Force Awakens,” Rey has become one of my all-time favorite Star Wars characters. I’m looking forward to seeing her grow into a full-fledged Jedi Knight, preserving some of the traditions of the past while also forging a new path. I’m super curious to see what this movie has to say about the Force and the concept of “balance” as a whole.
Aside from the planet I’m assuming is Batuu, we get several intriguing new planets, including this eerie ocean world that kinda reminds me of the ocean planet in “Interstellar.” Rey and Kylo meet on what appears to be the wreckage of the Death Star, and we hear Rey’s voiceover of, “People keep telling me they know me. No one does.” And then Kylo emerges from the mist and rain with his flickering red lightsaber and says, “But I do.”
I maybe definitely screamed during this part the first time I was watching the trailer. (It was actually a fairly pathetic-sounding scream, since I’m still getting over a cold and my excited scream ended up sounding rather garbled/strangled. Thankfully my husband didn’t come running into the room to check if I was dying.)
Rey and Kylo’s super-complicated dynamic is my favorite part of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and I’m so excited to see where their relationship goes in Episode IX. I also just love the idea of a lightsaber duel between these two on the ruins of the Death Star.
And, I’m dying to know what’s going on with them in that short clip in the white room where they’re destroying some sort of dark side shrine?
By this point I’m 99% sure that Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is getting redeemed in “The Rise of Skywalker” (I also believe he’s the Skywalker the title is referring to). “Bendemption” is my one “must” for Episode IX, and I’m pretty confident I’ll get it, but there’s always that little bit of doubt/worry!
The story lives forever…
I’m really curious to see what Palpatine’s role in all of this is (the trailer does give us a really cool shot of what appears to be his creepy throne). At first I wasn’t sure that I was in love with the idea of Palpatine returning for this film, but I’m 100% in now, and I think it will be a great way to tie this nine-part saga together.
There are so many randomly awesome shots in this trailer: a Star Destroyer busting out of the snow/ice and/or water; a bazillion Resistance ships all coming together for what appears to be a truly epic space battle to end all space battles; plus space horses(!) presumably running across the deck of a Star Destroyer. Basically I’m either going to be screaming in excitement or crying throughout this entire movie.
Speaking of crying, the most heartbreaking moment of the trailer belonged to C-3PO. C-3PO has never been one of my favorite Star Wars characters, but the clip from the trailer where everyone is looking at him solemnly and he says he’s “taking one last look at my friends” definitely got me teary-eyed.
My theory is that C-3PO is getting his memory erased in this scene for some reason (perhaps to restore his prequel-era memories?). R2 and 3PO have definitely been through a lot throughout this saga, and losing either one of them would be a tough blow for fans.
As always, it’s lovely to see Carrie Fisher, and it’s still heartbreaking that she wasn’t able to act in this film. However, I’m confident that J.J. Abrams will give her a fitting tribute using previously-shot footage.
When I look at all the trailers/footage/images we’ve seen for “The Rise of Skywalker” so far, I’m still not sure what the plot will be, and to me that’s great. I’m pretty certain that the film will center on the themes of redemption and legacy, but as for all the adventures the plot will take us on? I’m looking forward to heading into the theater in December to find out!
