Judge orders New York to dole out nearly half a million in legal fees to NRA after Supreme Court victory
Tumblr media
New York Ordered to Pay NRA Almost Half a Million Dollars in Legal Fees In a landmark decision, a New York judge has ruled that the state must pay the National Rifle Association (NRA) nearly $447,700.82 in legal fees. This comes in the wake of a major case in which the NRA emerged victorious at the Supreme Court. Last summer, the Supreme Court deemed New York's public carry licensing law unconstitutional, affirming the right to carry a pistol in public as a constitutional privilege under the Second Amendment. The NRA played a significant role in this case, known as the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen. "The NRA regards the $447K award in the NYSRPA V. Bruen case as a pivotal victory, a symbol that justice is definitively on our side," noted Michael Jean, the NRA’s director of the Office of Litigation Counsel. Jean further emphasized, "This triumph in Bruen has fortified the Second Amendment in an unprecedented manner, and we continue our unrelenting fight to uphold our rights and challenge those who endeavor to infringe upon them." However, it's worth noting that this award only covers a third of the NRA's legal expenses. Jean expressed gratitude to the dedicated NRA members who helped shoulder the financial burden for the case, as New York has refused to provide full compensation. Before the Supreme Court's intervention, New York's licensing requirement mandated that applicants demonstrate a "proper cause" for seeking a license, allowing officials to use their discretion in evaluating whether someone had a justifiable reason for carrying a firearm. Simply wishing to protect oneself or their property didn't meet the standard. In a pivotal opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote, "Because the State of New York issues public-carry licenses only when an applicant demonstrates a special need for self-defense, we conclude that the State’s licensing regime violates the Constitution." Following this court decision, New York legislators swiftly passed the Concealed Carry Improvement Act. This law prohibits carrying firearms in "sensitive areas" like stadiums, houses of worship, museums, parks, and other public places. It also imposes revised record-keeping and new safety requirements on retailers and mandates background checks for ammunition purchases. In summary, the NRA's legal victory has not only impacted New York but also stirred a significant debate about the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms in the United States. INDY Daily: How the Triangle is Commemorating Juneteenth
It’s Wednesday, June 16
Thank you to our sponsor, EnoFest, the annual festival of the Eno River Association. We're excited to announce that Enofest will return July 3 and 4 with an immersive in-person experience with live music, a juried craft show, food and fun on the river. As a special bonus, we will kick off the weekend with a free virtual event streamed on Friday, July 2.
Good morning, readers.
We have a new paper out on stands today and it highlights the many ways Triangle residents are recognizing and celebrating Juneteenth, America's oldest holiday that commemorates the end of slavery. And since many Juneteenth events kick off today, I thought I'd highlight a few here.
Several of our local municipalities are planning inaugural Juneteenth events.
In Raleigh, the Inaugural Capital City Juneteenth Celebration begins today with an online presentation from the North Carolina Museum of History that examines the history of Juneteenth and connects it to the present day. Other events include a colorful visual celebration of the legacy of Juneteenth at the State Capitol on Saturday and a free, culminating event at Dorothea Dix Park featuring speakers, musical performances, food, and other entertainment.
On Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m., the N.C. Central University James. E. Shapard Memorial Library presents Juneteenth: Looking Back While Moving Forward, a panel discussion that includes presentations on the history of Juneteenth and discussions around criminal justice reform, economic wealth, African American women leadership, and the role of the Black church in the community.
Both the Town of Cary and the Towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro are also hosting Juneteenth events.
Cary's events begin today and include a combination of virtual and in-person events, such as scheduled performances at the Sertoma Amphitheater at Bond Park on Saturday from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Chapel Hill-Carrborro's events begin on Friday and run through the weekend and include a kickoff celebration, a book talk with author Annette Gordon-Reed, motorcade, music series, and much more.
Probably the Triangle's largest Juneteenth event happens this Friday at the Hayti Heritage Center in Durham from 3 to 9 p.m. The celebration will feature a Black Futures photo booth, Capoeira workshops, karaoke, a Haitian dance workshop with live drumming, the Hillside High School drumline, two African dance ensembles, live jazz, and a tribute to Erzulie, the Haitian Mother Mary and Goddess of Love whose veve (a religious symbol) has adorned the steeple of the Heritage Center (formerly the church) for 130 years. Read all about it here.
Have a great Wednesday.

UNC police arrested a man found sleeping in a vehicle loaded with firearms in the Campus Health Parking lot yesterday morning. The man,  Joseph John Radomski III, who was in a possession of two rifles, a shotgun, a machete, and ammunition, was charged with felony possession of weapons on school property.
Dr. Deborah Strohman, a leadership professor at UNC, writes about "the ongoing mental and physical gyrations while trying to survive as a Black faculty member at my alma mater," and shares thoughts from other Black women on the university's faculty.
UNC Health reached a milestone of admitting zero COVID-19 patients to its hospitals in a 36-hour span for the first time in more than a year.
UNC Children's Hospital was named among the nation's best children's hospitals by the U.S. News & World Report for the 13th straight year.
Durham County
Juneteenth at Hayti Heritage Center in Durham will celebrate freedom while focusing on the revitalization of the storied historically Black neighborhood.
Voices columnist Aya Shabu explains how commemorating Juneteenth in Durham, a city where spaces for Black people are shrinking, is an occasion for the transfer of Black power to future generations.
Employees of Durham's chronically understaffed 911 center say a toxic work environment, where workers are overworked and never get breaks, is to blame for the staffing shortages. Workers have more calls than they can handle, responders say, which has resulted in callers being placed on hold, redirected to non-emergency lines, and call responses being dispatched through Wake County.

At their city council meeting yesterday, Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin and Council member David Cox addressed the vote taken in closed session that resulted in the council's asking the state legislature to move municipal elections from October of this year to November of 2022 due to delays in receiving census data.
Tenants of an affordable housing complex on Garner Road in southeast Raleigh are worried about losing their homes.
Claire Curzan, a 16-year-old swimmer from Cary, has qualified for the U.S. Olympic team for the summer games in Tokyo.
Elsewhere
Here's more on Sen. Thom Tillis's unnecessary, base-stoking decision to co-sponsor a bill that bans teaching of The 1619 Project  in U.S. public schools.
Online spaces designed to build community and bolster mental health for LGBTQ youth in North Carolina and beyond that were created during the pandemic lockdown are here to stay.
An executive order from Gov. Roy Cooper sets new targets for offshore wind generation.
We created a historical timeline for Juneteenth, the oldest national holiday that commemorates the end of slavery.
Surprise! North Carolina will collect $6.5 billion more in tax revenues over the next two years than expected. That's enough money, Gov. Cooper says, for Republicans to do all the tax cuts they want while paying for all of the priorities he wants to fund in his proposed budget.
Statewide COVID-19 by the numbers: Tuesday, June 15
272 New lab-confirmed cases (1,009,198 total; seven-day average trending down)

A Very Early Form 1
If you’re an American gun owner you will be familiar with the National Firearms Act of 1934. Those withing to own a short barrelled weapon a suppressor or an automatic weapon must file a ‘Form 1′ to apply for a tax stamp to own the weapon legally. Back then, just as today, the NFA tax stamp cost $200, if we adjust that for inflation it would be somewhere near $3,900 today.
Our friends at the Cody Firearms Museum recently discovered the original Form 1 for a rifle in their collection - a  Winchester Model 94, chambered in 30-30, with a 15 inch barrel.
Tumblr media
The rifle was owned by R.F. Chatfield-Taylor, who worked at Tuscon airport at the time. His rifle had a 15in barrel and a rear peep sight. In November 1935 he applied for and was granted a tax stamp, just 5 months after the NFA became US law, for the rifle he purchased in 1933. His Form 1 may be one of the oldest surviving physical NFA Form 1s.
I did some research and wrote up the story for TFB, check it out here.

The Easter Uprising and 20,000 Russian Rifles,
During World War I Germany and Irish Republicans were allies as it was in Germany’s best interest to destabilize the British Empire in any way possible, and or course the Irish Rebels needed weapons and supplies. In 1916 the German government offered support for the Easter Uprising, a planned rebellion to take place in Dublin on April 24th. On April 9th, 1916 the SS Libau (disguised as the Norwegian merchant ship SS Aud) disembarked from the port of Lubeck, steaming around Denmark and Norway, sneaking past the British blockade, then looping around the North Atlantic before steaming south and secretly delivering it’s cargo at an Irish port.
Tumblr media
The cargo carried by the SS Libau consisted of 20,000 Russian Mosin Nagant Model 1891 bolt action rifles along with 4 million rounds of ammunition. The rifles had been captured by the German Army on the Eastern Front, and since they did not share common caliber with standard German infantry firearms, was used as a second line rifle, or supplied to Central Power nations and other allies. In addition to the rifles were ten machine guns and explosives.
The SS Libau was able to reach the Irish coast, however it was discovered by three British destroyers who were suspicious of an unexpected visit by a “Norwegian merchant ship”. Once in Cork harbor the crew scuttled the ship, sending it to the bottom of Cork harbor on April 16th, a mere weak before the Easter Rising. A number of Mosin Nagant rifles were salvaged by Royal Navy divers, and today there are dozens of examples on display in museums across Ireland and the UK. The rifles pictured above are on display at the National Museum of Ireland, the rifle pictured below is part of the Royal Collection Trust.

blog post #5: political interest groups- NRA
My interest group of choice is the National Rifle Association, otherwise known as the NRA. The group was founded in 1871 by two US Civil War veterans as a recreational group designed to "promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis" The NRA supported the NFA along with the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA), which together created a system to federally license gun dealers and established restrictions on particular categories and classes of firearms.provided a means to raise millions of dollars to fund gun safety and educational projects of benefit to the general public. Contributions to the Foundation are tax-deductible and benefit a variety of American constituencies including youth, women, hunters, competitive shooters, gun collectors, law enforcement agents and persons with physical disabilities. While widely recognized today as a major political force and as America's foremost defender of Second Amendment rights, the NRA has, since its inception, been the premier firearms education organization in the world. But our successes would not be possible without the tireless efforts and countless hours of service our nearly five million members have given to champion Second Amendment rights and support NRA programs. As former Clinton spokesman George Stephanopoulos (democrat) said, "Let me make one small vote for the NRA. They're good citizens. They call their congressmen. They write. They vote. They contribute. And they get what they want over time." The NRA holds annual meetings, the next major meeting will be held Huston Texas, May 14-16 2021. The NRA offers many volunteering opportunities such as Competitions, Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program, Friends of NRA Events, Institute for Legislative Action, Membership Recruiter Program, NRA Clubs and Associations, NRA Museums, Range Technical Team, Refuse To Be A Victim, Shows & Exhibits, Women's Programs, Youth Hunter Education Challenge, Youth Shooting Programs. I stand strongly with the NRA and with gun rights, however I do believe that people kill people rather than guns kill people. I believe with the proper training and mental checks, then less gun killings will occur. The God, Guns, Life PAC focuses on religious liberty, second amendment, and the right to life. They have raised $52,000. They have spent $30,000 on independent expenditure.

Davy Crockett Museum For about a year after the park opened in 1955, Disneyland had a Davy Crockett Museum in the Davy Crockett Arcade in Frontierland. There was an Alamo exhibit including life-size wax figures of Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen, and a historical firearm display provided by the National Rifle Association. When the museum closed, the wax figures were moved to Fort Wilderness on Tom Sawyer Island, where they remained for several decades. The Davy Crockett Frontier Arcade was a unique mix of a game center and a gift shop. In the center of the room, guests could purchase furs, dishware, clothing, and other collectibles. Along the walls of the arcade, guests could play a series of shooting or adventure games, and Davy Crockett himself made occasional appearances and had meet and greets. #vintagedisneyland #fronterland #disneylandhistory #disneyland #disneylandresort #disneylandcalifornia (at Disneyland - Theme Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/By9K1CngmpI/?igshid=5edmm1fxbccg

Beaches
Known as America’s finest city, San Diego has the best beaches in the US. The nice sunny climate matches well with the long beach shores. Some of the most famous include the La Jolla Cove, Coronado beach, and the Mission beach. They serve as the favorite picnic areas of sun lovers especially during the weekend. The soft sand makes a perfect playground for children. Residents and locals love to surf and get sun tanned from June to September but you might see them even in December for as long as the sun is out. If it is your first time in San Diego, bring you towel, put on your sunscreen and get ready to do beach hopping.

San Diego Is Showing California How to Use Its Red Flag Law
In a breakroom, an employee allegedly praised the perpetrator of the Las Vegas mass shooting, remarking that he was genuinely impressed by the death toll. The man said that he had toyed with the idea of attempting a similar attack, perhaps at a church or synagogue. The dealership’s employees grew especially anxious when their co-worker, who they knew owned an assault rifle, said he would kill them all if he were ever to be fired. Read more here.
Mass shooting and attacks on innocent people happen because of the easy way to purchase a gun. But with the help of the red flag law, others can petition a state court to order the removal of firearms from a person. The petition can be filed if the owner is seen to present danger to himself and to other people. While the strict implementation of the law has reduced the number of killings in San Diego, the real issue is still the high number of people possessing firearms. In California, the requirements in order to buy forearms are very easy to fulfill. If they can only make the licensing stricter, this will surely reduce the untoward incidents from happening.
USS Midway Museum in San Diego, CA
The USS Midway Museum houses an extensive aircraft collection called the “Midway”, the US longest-serving aircraft carrier. The aircraft is known for its several aviation breakthroughs and humanitarian missions. It is the only carrier that served during the entire Cold War. During the visit, there will be self-guided audio tour about the life and experiences during its operation. You will see the sleeping quarters, engine room, officer’s quarters, and flight simulators. The Midway Museum is also open for private events and other nationally broadcast happenings. One popular attraction is the virtual reality flight simulator ride that has only opened in 2019.

air gun
There are two types of air weapons: the air rifle and the air pistol. As the name says, both use air to propel their projectiles, albeit the air is compressed in different ways depending on the model.
The air pistol was undoubtedly present in some form in the sixteenth century, as evidenced by a surviving example in the Stockholm museum! By the seventeenth century, air weapons had gained enough traction to be used for hunting. These instances were most typically in the form of air rifles, which had progressed to the point that they could pierce one inch deep wood at a range of one hundred paces. Even these days, it's very astonishing!
The pressures on a variety of these guns reached 800 PSI, which was remarkable. However, we are now constrained by low pressure for health, safety, and legal reasons. Actually, air guns are still classified as firearms in some nations, so you wouldn't be able to get one or use one unless you had a licence.
The Air Gun's Power
We now have a variety of air gun options. That is to say, we have a choice in terms of how we power that weapon. It's still essentially powered by air, but the technique by which the air is compressed differs significantly. Let's take a brief look at each of the possibilities to see what benefits and drawbacks they offer.
Air Guns using CO2
These guns, like the Crosman 1077 gun discussed elsewhere, are powered by CO2. The CO2 is kept in either small 12g caplets or storage containers, or larger 88g canisters. They're both attached to the weapon. The smaller caplets last about 50 to 80 shots before needing to be replaced, whilst the more expensive Carbon Dioxide storage container lasts 300 to 400 shots! Clearly, the most important advantage of this strategy is that it keeps the pleasure going! You aren't constantly pausing to re-charge the rifle, which is important if you're hunting small vermin because you won't have time to re-pump and aim at a critter because they'll most likely be quite a distance away by this time! The disadvantage is that you must continue to purchase CO2.
Rifle with a Broken Barrel
As the name suggests, you 'break' the gun barrel at the hinged point so that a steel spring hidden within the weapon may be compressed. One of the advantages of this firearm is that the air is constantly 'free.' To compress the spring, all that is required is a little muscle power. One of the many downsides of air guns is that they require a lot of bodily force to operate. Another downside is the amount of time it takes between shots. If you're just plinking, it's not too bad, but if you're vermin hunting and frighten the thing off with your first missed shot, it's a disaster! Instead of a coiled steel spring, some weapons use a 'gas spring.' Weirauch, Crosman, and Arowsmith are among the brands that employ it.
Rifle with a Pneumatic Component
This is when you fire the pellet with pre-compressed air as the source. Compression is accomplished by priming a lever located someplace on the pistol. There are a few different types of pneumatic rifles. These are some of them:
single stroke - the pump on the pistol only needs to be primed once before it is ready to fire.
multi stroke - to get changeable power, you must prime the pump lever approximately 2 to 10 times.
PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) - where the tank is charged from an air reservoir, such as a diving canister or even a hand pump, rather than from a lever on the rifle.
These, like Carbon Dioxide air guns, have an advantage in situations when continuous fire is desired, as a decent tank may deliver up to 500 shots. The disadvantage is usually a higher buying price due to the higher expense of manufacturing these types of guns. It's also a good idea to invest in a high-quality high-pressure hand pump or a diving canister. However, compared to, say, a carbon dioxide gun, the cost of use will be lower.
That is all there is to it. A brief overview of air rifles, as well as an assessment of their benefits and drawbacks. I hope it aids you in making any decisions you need to make when considering an air rifle or air pistol. For more information on buying an air gun, see our buying guide.

Fast Firing Weapons that are older than the 2nd Amendment
This will kill the lefts argument!
The Tribunist writes
As the debate about firearms and the Second Amendment heats up, you will likely hear this line repeated frequently: “The authors of the Second Amendment were writing about muskets, not assault rifles.” Muskets are single-shot guns. They aren’t fast. They certainly aren’t repeaters, or machine guns. This point becomes the central argument for abolishing the Second Amendment.
The argument is completely wrong, on so many levels. When the Second Amendment was written, it guaranteed that civilians could own the same weapons as armies. The amendment was put in place, at least in part, to ensure that any totalitarian government would not win an arms race with American civilians.
By this logic, we should have unfettered access to the same weaponry used by the United States military. We don’t. We haven’t for well over a century.
But there are other problems with the “musket” rational. The most obvious is that there were many rifles in use at the time. While armies relied on smooth-bore muskets, American gunsmiths were making exquisite rifles.
The second is that there were repeating guns. To say that the authors of the Second Amendment couldn’t see the path of firearms development seems somewhat reductive. They would have been aware of significant advances.
Check out the Cookson Repeater. “Dating to about the 1750s,” Guns.com writes, “the Cookson Volitional repeating flintlock shown above from the collection of the National Firearms Museum was crafted by London gunsmith John Shaw. This particular breechloader has a two-chambered magazine that holds a dozen .55 caliber lead balls in one part and a dozen 60-grain powder charges in the second, with each coming together when the crank is worked by the user.”
Repeaters were cutting edge in the 16th Century. The Kalthoffs, a family of Danish gunsmiths, had a repeater that was rumored to fire up to 30 shots before it needed to be reloaded.
Italian gunsmith Michele Lorenzoni made a successful 7-shot repeating pistol around the same time.
The term machine gun was in use as…

The PIAT at Ismailia
This still from a British Pathe newsreel about the battle for the Ismailia Governorate building and Egyptian Police barracks (Bureau Sanitaire) in January 1952, during an escalation of the tensions due to the British occupation of the Suez Canal Zone. This footage represents one of the last operational uses of the Projector, Infantry, Anti-Tank (PIAT). At the time it was beginning to be replaced by the US M20 3.5in ‘Super Bazooka’.
The British Army had garrisoned the Suez Canal Zone since the end of the Second World War and were subject to regular low level attacks. With increasing pressure from the Egyptian government to withdraw from the zone tensions rose further when the 1936 Anglo-Egyptian defence treaty was repealed. The British called on Egyptian police stationed in Ismailia, whom were allegedly responsible for some of the attacks on British troops, to surrender their weapons on 25th January 1952. The police refused and fighting around the police barracks broke out.

The rest of the platoon are armed with a mix of Rifle No.4s and Sten MkVs (source)
Men of the 1st battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, along with elements of the 4th battalion, Royal Tank Regiment, surrounded the police barracks - with 800 police inside. In the still above men of the Lancashire Fusiliers await orders. There leaning against the wall is a platoon’s PIAT. It’s unclear if the PIAT was used during the fighting around the barracks, one of the weapon’s secondary roles was ‘house breaking’ essentially breaching holes in walls, but with armoured cars and Centurion tanks of the Royal Tank Regiment it is unclear if it would have been needed.
The barracks were bombarded and attacked by the Lancashire Fusiliers suffering three killed and 13 casualties during an assault. Following another bombardment the Egyptian police suffered 41 killed, 73 wounded, and a further 886 surrendered. In 1955 the British army began pulling out of the Canal Zone but would soon return. The PIAT was officially declared obsolete in the summer of 1956, just as the Suez Crisis loomed.
