8th Annual Cristal Connors Film Awards: BEST COSTUME DESIGN
WINNER-
Suspiria- Giulia Piersanti
Stark, angular winter wear that cloaks and obscures in muted earth tones that give way to bursts of blood red. Each character has a distinct point of view and each of them is chic, compelling and editorial, ripped from the pages of Sartori era Italian Vogue.
NOMINEES-
The Favourite- Sandy Powell
Pristine, striking garments that are characterized by contrasting blacks and whites and are driven primarily by utility- Sarah’s shooting outfit, or her impromptu lace face bandage, or Anne’s leather riding suit pictured above. Fitting that a lesbian costume drama would find a way to feature so many memorable pants moments.
Happy as Lazzaro- Loredana Buscemi
An inspired, meticulously curated mish-mash of periods that give an intentionally cloudy idea of when its film is taking place, marrying the tattered, dirtied knits of mid-century impoverished sharecroppers with the bold graphics of the 80s and 90s, paying close attention to class disparity.
If Beale Street Could Talk- Caroline Eselin
Warm, lush confections that shine light into a dark world, all carefully sourced vintage pieces that carry with them a lived-in authenticity and the spirit of their former owners, creating a slew of dazzling wardrobes that that are humbly functional.
Zama- Julio Suárez
Dynamic, colorful period work that draws a definitive line between the buttoned up colonialist aristocrats and the exploited indigenous population-- elaborate corsets and crisp coats pop against the the patterned, often revealing attire of the subjugated, clearly contrasting the haves and the have nots.
HONORABLE MENTIONS: Ruth E. Carter- Black Panther, Renee Ehrlich Kalfus- A Simple Favor, Stacey Berman- The Miseducation of Cameron Post, Deirdra Elizabeth Govan- Sorry to Bother You, Andrea Flesch- Colette
