If I was on the fence already, THESE TWO PAGES FUCKIN SOLD ME ON THIS DOOFY COMIC!
Hesse’s use of crayon drawings, the character’s goofy-ass expressions, Knuckles’ gullible nature played for laughs in an affective way...the Sonic: Mega Drive comic really helped the franchise as a whole grow into something really fun!

The Yellow Devil fight, once again with feeling! This whole issue pretty much covers the entirety of the final stretch of the game, so that means back-to-back boss battles, but with the added character growth Mega Man's gotten since the start. It's pretty epic!

This issue serves as a good introduction to every important character from the first game, as well as give us an idea on the semi-futuristic world of 200X. We saw Mega Man earlier but here we see how he was before becoming the main hero!
Rock/Mega Man is just a simple robot kid, his sister Roll is the fussy but caring assistant-type, Dr. Light is the caring father figure to them both, and Dr. Wily... well, he steals the show in every panel he's in. Spaziante really made sure to make him look ominous at every opportunity. xD

Just 'cause this is a comic book about a Super Fighting Robot invading castles and blowing up tougher robots doesn't mean this comic ain't gonna be philosophical. I'm gonna save my praises fpr later but Flynn does a brilliant job complimenting the game's premise while also adding the morality on robotics and the problems it can cause. It doesn't go into detail in it now but this first issue does brush against it.
Also neat, the Robot Masters are positioned like in a Mega Man level select screen. And Dr. Light and Wily had built the Sniper Joe enemies in this continuity!

One of my FAVOURITE things about Archie Mega Man is the nuanced and fleshed out relationship between Doctors Light and Wily. Their already expanded personalities in this comic allow us to see just how these two got along before and how things will soon go pear-shaped for everyone involved.
Dr. Light is super positive and trusting, Dr. Wily is a revenge-driven dude who feels overshadowed by his former lab partner, and these two are gonna have a lot of insightful back and forth as the comic goes on!
And its not like we're meant to see Wily in that a tragic a light. I mean, look at him in these panels. xD

I love this whole "converting Rock into a combat robot" montage, its prolly one of my fave parts of the whole comic! From Dr. Light's monologue, testing out Mega Man's features, to the awesome art and spark effects done by Spaziante, It all comes together to make a grand 1st issue!
Didn't think you could fit the whole introduction of Mega Man in one issue, huh? xD Well, the first game's story was just that simple, though the narrative here takes a lot of inspiration from the Mega Man: Powered Up remake, right down to the Wily evil plan announcement. This comic's full of homages to moments from the games and remakes!

Funnily enough, the start of this issue begins with a focus on a couple human soldiers in the middle of this Robot Master rampage. It goes on for a little long and interferes with Dr. Light's relaying information, but I like that it makes the hectic Mega Man world feel more grounded.

This dude has no chill!
The day is saved, the Robot Masters have returned to their original helpful programming, and Dr. Wily has been dragged out of his castle and ready to presumably be arrested! All in all, a good end to the first of many battles in Mega Man's new life of heroism.

Update & Archie Mega Man!
Hey yall! Things have been pretty quiet on my Tumblr huh?
Tbh there are a couple of reasons for that. My job's been demanding a lotta time out of me to the point I only really log in to see what others reblog, I've not been in the best place mental health-wise and that's been affecting my video-making too, and I've been big into FFXIV as of late! I've not even had the chance to catch up on the comics or new games yet, which when not depressed is the first thing I ever think about doing! o4o I've slowly but surely gotten out of my funk and started drawing and making Sonic videos again. I dun even care if people are bored of my content at this point, I just do it for me xD
In a further attempt to get back in the groove, I'm announcing my weekly reviews on my Tumblr will continue, starting on the 4th! I got done with Archie Sonic and am currently looking at fan works you guys suggested, but this weekend I'll be getting into Archie Mega Man!
Tumblr media
I'll be sadly nostalgic reading through this comic. It's been over a decade since it started publication and I'm still salty over Archie Comics deciding to can it for Riverdale and whatever. But I won't let my salt get in the way of my reviewing style.
I hope you guys look forward to that. ^.^ RobotnikHolmes is back, baybee.

I think Mega Man #1 is one of the best first issues I've read in a while. Starting off with a flash forward, we see the blue bomber doing what he does best and fighting towards a skull-shaped castle. The sense of scale is very nice, with one whole page establishing the setting and then a two-page spread throwing us right into the action before we return to the present-day! It's very affective in how it eases in new fans who might be familiar with Mega Man iconography (or just played in Super Smash Bros lol) while also giving fans of the games a taste of the awesome things to come. It's great!
Man, what a glorious opener...
They simply had to use the Mega Man 2 design for the castle, and I totally understand it. Not only is it pretty much the most iconic design throughout the series, but also the original castle apparently just looked like this.

I can see why they used the skull decour now. xD

Metal Sonic is beaten to a pulp after a climactic fight. An Ancient Gear power-up is no match for the might of friendship, it seems! Hesse’s panel are so fricking cool, I love the composition of the fights and Metal Sonic’s eyes going all glitchy from the damage dealt to him.
And of course, how could I not refer to this moment following Amy’s rescue. She may have been a damsel in distress a few pages ago but, she’s gonna milk it for what it's worth if it means being held, bridal style. xD
