Reviews and thoughts under the cut
Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor (8/10)
It's been a while since I read a male main character, and Lazlo is a really strong one to start with. The characters are really the strong part of this book. I loved both Lazlo and Sarai; they're easy to empathize with and genuinely good people. Their romance is also well-written and quite passionate, probably my favorite part. The plot isn't amazing, but it's still good; I like that there's this history of war and gods and monsters but the main conflict forgoes that in favor of the very human conflict of hate and prejudice. However, I did find a lot of a the middle of this book dragged quite a bit. It was good I enjoyed the romance as much as I did because it was most of what kept me going.
Immortal Longings by Chloe Gong (6/10)
I've read all of Chloe Gong's previous novels and loved them, but I don't think her foray into adult fantasy turned out all that well. This book is very info-dumpy, and as a result I am only loosely attached to the characters. A lot of this story is based on things that happened before it actually starts, and instead of getting flashbacks or characters confiding in each other, they just kind of say what happened in the narration. There were some good twists in here, enough to make me want to read the next book when it comes out, but especially compared to her other books this one is lacking.
Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (10/10)
This book was so batshit insane and astonishingly wonderful. As is par for the course for The Locked Tomb, it was incredibly confusing but also stunningly executed. The work with POV in this book is great, using third, second, and first person in a way that hints at some situations revealed towards the end, and also making Harrow an unreliable narrator, making the reader doubt even the things that would usually be taken as fact. The mysteries of Lyctorhood are far from revealed, and the revelations in the latter third of this book completely blew me away. Looking back, a good majority of this new information is foreshadowed, and it's just so well-written. If I hadn't promised myself I'd be alternating between this and The Poppy War trilogy, I'd be picking up Nona the Ninth right now.
Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim (7/10)
This was certainly a fun read, and it helps that it's based on one of my favorite fairy tales. I think Shiori has good growth throughout the book, and I liked that the villain was not all she seemed. Although the reasoning was a little stretched, she was given a lot more depth than I initially thought she would. The romance was sweet but not nearly as developed as I would like (and I was kind of rooting for the other option). Unfortunately, this book feels very rushed; each scene felt a little too quick, and it didn't make the emotional beats hit as hard as they should. I'm undecided as to whether I'll read the sequel.
Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick (4/10)
I went into this book knowing it would be trash, but I was not prepared for just how horrendously written it would be. Not only is this book an almost identical copy of Twilight (just replace 'vampire' with 'fallen angel') it is also just aggravating to read. There was genuine potential in the creepier parts of this book, especially with Nora being dismissed by everyone and coming to doubt her own memory and sanity, but the incessant focus on the romance over all else just ruined the tone. Everyone in this book acts like a total creep and yet Nora just brushes it all aside, instead preferring to focus on the love interest's dark eyes and windswept hair than the very obvious red flags he is vigorously waving. The absolute worst part of this book was Vee, Nora's 'friend' who is inappropriate at best and a victim-blamer at worst after she waves off someone literally physically assaulting her best friend with excuses of...he wasn't feeling well? Anyway, this book wasn't even enjoyable as a lighter, trashy romance read.
Island of Fire by Lisa McMann (9/10)
I think these books get better and better as they go along. Entering the third book of this series, there is a noticeable complexity that doesn't really appear much in middle grade. Our main character, Alex, is dealing with quite a bit in this book, from grief to his newfound authority in Artime, and there's a lot of nuance. Not to mention some complicated feelings concerning the romantic plotlines, which are usually quite straightforward in middle grade. The worldbuilding is also getting more and more interesting, especially concerning the ending of this book. My one major issue is that although this series jumps from perspective to perspective quite often, Aaron's POV kind of dropped off the face of the earth about halfway through, and for such a major character (who's going through a rather intense breakdown), I wish we'd gotten to see him more.
Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater (9/10)
It is truly remarkable that despite the characters beings older and with a mostly new cast how similar the tone and writing is in this book to The Raven Cycle. It's really interesting to read a Ronan-focused story since even though he was a major character in TRC, this provides so much more insight into him. I really like Jordan, she's probably my favorite new character, my opinion of Declan has improved exponentially, and I'm hesitant about Hennessey. I'm not as enthralled as I was with TRC, but I'm definitely interested.
Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint Vol. 1 by Sing Shong (10/10)
This book took me almost a year to read, and it was worth it. It seems like a typical fantasy webnovel with a completely overpowered protagonist, but there is so much more to this story. Kim Dokja has to be one of the most unreliable narrators I've ever read. He goes to extreme lengths to hide his plans and feelings, not just from the other characters but also the reader. There are so many strong themes throughout this book, and the side characters are extremely well characterized. I find Dokja's relationship with his mother particularly interesting. Then, of course, there's him and Yoo Joonghyuk, who are supposedly platonic, but they're "companions in life and death" and ridiculously in tune with one another and guess who kills Dokja (don't worry, he dies on the regular) when he's supposed to be killed by the person he loves most. I'm kind of obsessed with them.

Lacey: 😳 Merlot: ...And then you kissed... right? Coraleye: [Sighs] No. I wish! That'd be too dangerous. I just looked him in the eyes, batted my eyes and said "Careful for those balconies, that's a pretty steep fall." And then we went our separate ways for the night. Lacey: This is quite the love story you got going on here. I just worry it'll end in death. Merlot: I can explain. When things are going really well in our stories, it usually ends in-

Coraleye: No, I get it. I mean I certainly don't want him to die, but the way this legacy works... we could bring him back and we could all live happily ever after. I just don't want him to die tonight. By the hands of Tatiana. Or any other vampire for that matter. Heh.

if they had a kid meme for Mollie and Diego?????
Ooo, a fun paring! Mollie and Diego both had sucky childhoods so I think they would be hesitant to have children in the beginning of their relationship. This would probably be in a hypothetical situation where they've settled down and gotten past their own traumas.
Name: Elizabeth Hope Hargreeves
Mollie's middle name is Lisbeth, so their daughter's first name is sort of a play on that. Her middle name "Hope" is a reminder to both of them that there is hope for a happy ending because that's exactly what she is to both of them.
Gender: Female
General Appearance: She definitely takes after Diego appearance-wise. She's got brown hair and brown eyes, and her facial structure is pretty similar to his. She's also pretty tall, which she gets from him. Her hair does have a reddish undertone to it when she's out in the sun though, which she probably gets from Mollie.
Personality: She's got a rebellious streak to her and she has a tendency to get snappy or respond sarcastically when her patience has worn thin. She's got a dark humor and she can sometimes be a bit too brutally honest. She's a good kid at heart though, she just doesn't know how to express herself in the most productive ways sometimes.
Special Talents: Much to Mollie's surprise, Liz actually inherited her talent for the arts. She's not as much of a painter as Mollie is, but she's exceptionally good at sculpting and she's taken a lot of classes to hone that talent.
Who they like better: She doesn't necessarily like either one of her parents better than the other, but I guess she tends to get along better with Mollie. They bond over art a lot and they love working on projects together. Mollie is also super sarcastic, although maybe less abrasive, so they like swapping quips with each other.
Who they take after more: Liz is a lot like Diego personality-wise as well. They're both stubborn and a little rough around the edges. They have a tendency to speak without really thinking about the consequences and are harsher than they maybe intended to be. That's why they sometimes butt heads, because they're so similar.
Personal Head canon: Diego is secretly really good with kids and goes all mushy around them, so he's a thousand times worse when he has his own. He's always buying Liz little things he sees in shop windows or picking up pretty pebbles he thinks she'll like. She has an entire wooden chest full of the different knickknacks he's bought her.

“It is the height of the Jazz Age, and social revolution is afoot. Furthermore, this is the age of Prohibition—and of bootleggers and gangsters. Fashion, music, technology, and morals are all changing at a lightning pace. Club owner Felix Fontano, the son of successful bootlegger and crime boss Frank Fontano—and a successful businessman himself—is throwing this private party for a group of select friends at a jazz club in 1920s New York City. It is a night of revelry like many other nights of revelry enjoyed by this group of sophisticates, artists and hoodlums . . . until things go horribly wrong.”
This mystery is divided into two segments. During the first portion of the evening (Act One), the guests will arrive and mingle in their costumes and in character. Dinner will be served. And there will be dancing.
Act Two will begin with the grisly discovery of Felix Fontano’s bloody body. In the area around the body, there are signs of the struggle that occurred prior to Felix’s death. It will now be up to the guests to figure out what happened. (All characters can participate, they just need to dress accordingly. The assigned roles are just to spread the clues for the mystery.)
All players who have been assigned a role will make a post or a page on their blog until 8pm EST with all the information you need to figure out who is the murderer.
Assigned roles are:
Edgar Fitzpatrick - Aaron Tveit Raymond Reynolds - Jack Lowden Jessica Mitchell - Lizzie Olsen Roselyn Webster - Gigi Gaunt Duke Carillo - Zac Efron Poppy Gebhardt - Tom Holland Coretta Carpenter - Lily Collins Edith Fontano - Gal Gdot June Palmetto - Saoirse Ronan Judy Jordan - Bella Hadid Claudia Mitchell - Vanessa Hudgens Gloria Call - Ariana Grande Eleanor Nash  - Dianna Agron Win Wallace - Natalia Dyer
Once you think you’ve figured it out you can vote here until Saturday 6pm EST. We will announce the name of the murderer tomorrow. Now have fun! Go on a scavenger hunt, post the costumes for your characters, start threads during the party and let your characters figure it out together IC, there are no limits.
(Please note: This is an optional event, you or your characters don’t have to participate if you’re uncomfortable with the theme chosen or the event itself.)

→ a girl he could have married
Tumblr media
Maureen Fitzpatrick was the sweetest girl of all at St. Paul’s and one of the few reasons Steve looked forward to Mass growing up. She was the youngest of eight girls and the same age as Steve, just a month younger. Being so close in age, they’d grown up together and played together at church functions and get togethers in their community. Her parents had come to America just a few years before his own and she understood what it was like to be first generation, her parents coming from the same area as his own. As the youngest, it was easy for her to disappear and she found comfort with the quiet, artsy Steve who didn’t think it weird to play with a girl. He also didn’t find her odd as they were, what she considered, two peas in a pod. Both asthmatic and Maureen born with one leg just slightly shorter than the other, they were misfits but he never saw her that way. As they grew up, they became closer despite the fact that Steve went to the public school and Maureen went to the all girls school like her sisters. But they always had Mass and the events. By the time Steve was fourteen, he knew he had a crush on her and she’d often joke that they were just waiting to turn eighteen so they could get married and their families wouldn’t have to worry. That never happened though. Shortly after her seventeenth birthday, Maureen passed away from complications with her asthma. Steve was devastated but he still finds time to bring her favorite flower, a poppy, to her grave on her birthday.

Murder At The Cat’s Meow
Welcome, everyone, and thank you for attending Murder At The Cat’s Meow. As all of you know, this is a murder mystery party. During the party, you will be playing the roles of staff, entertainers, and guests at a private party held at a jazz club in 1920s New York City. Each of you has a character sheet that details special knowledge that your character has, along with certain instructions for ways that your character should respond to specific situations. Aside from these instructions and the general role-playing tips on your character sheets, there is no particular script that you need to follow; simply do your best to act as you believe your character would act.
During the course of the evening, I will be playing the part of the Narrator; I will not be taking on a particular role but will rather be explaining what is happening as the night unfolds.
Let me describe the scene for you. It is the height of the Jazz Age, and social revolution is afoot. Furthermore, this is the age of Prohibition—and of bootleggers and gangsters. Fashion, music, technology, and morals are all changing at a lightning pace. Club owner Felix Fontano, the son of successful bootlegger and crime boss Frank Fontano—and a successful businessman himself—is throwing this private party for a group of select friends. It is a night of revelry like many other nights of revelry enjoyed by this group of sophisticates, artists and hoodlums . . . until things go horribly wrong.
Before we begin, we’ll give each of you a couple of minutes to read over your character sheet and handout and make sure you understand everything. Remember not to show your character sheet to anyone else and to be careful what information you end up sharing with other players. Some of you have secret information listed on your sheet that your character wouldn’t want disclosed to just anyone.
You are now free to mingle with each other (post and reply to starters relating to this event).
Tumblr media
Below are the list of guests in attendance at the party, including the host & staff at The Cat’s Meow:
IRI || Poppy Gebhardt--manager of the club
TRAVIS || Felix Fontano--club owner
ZOE || Edith Fontano--wife of Felix Fontano
THE CUCKOOS || Roger Webster
ALEX || Edgar Fitzpatrick--broadway producer
EVERETT || Duke Carillo--track owner
LORNA || June Palmetto--actress
THE CUCKOOS || Judy Jordan--flapper girl
PIETRO || Calvin Carpenter--bartender at the club
JULIAN || Jefferson Mitchell--stockbroker
WANDA || Claudia Mitchell--well-regarded author & women’s rights activist
Below is a description of the setting and things to interact with for the duration of the event:
The Murder Mystery Party is taking place inside the Institute ballroom.
Music of the age will be playing in the background throughout. Guests are welcome to enjoy it through dance or however they so choose.
Virgin cocktails/mocktails (Shirley Temples, Peach Bellinis, & Sparkling Mint-Lime Iced Tea) as well as sparkling cider, water, and fruit juices will be served throughout the party.
Finger foods (franks in a blanket, vegetable trays, fruit trays, popcorn, potato chips, tortilla chips & salsa) will also be served throughout the party.

🔀 for Luna Moore??? Look i love crossovers.
Ooo, this is an interesting one since I don't actually have any Sherlock OCs on this blog.
I feel like Mollie might work well with her. If I'm remembering correctly, Luna is into photography, which Mollie would definitely find interesting. She's an artist and she loves talking with other artists. I think she might also relate to the whole idea of having a secret side to yourself or your family. For Mollie, it's the fact that she's got these odd powers, and for Luna it's the whole secret agent family thing.
Tumblr media
I feel like maybe Alana Montague too, although I'm not one hundred percent sure why. There's just some something about their vibes that seems to work in my mind. They're both sophisticated, maybe a little unsuspecting on the outside. But they've got they're secrets and a bit of a secret edge to them.

The Woodworkers Barn is the second stage of Fabric Architecture’s renovation to a family home in Toukley, on the NSW Central Coast.
The main house on the site had undergone a major renovation in the previous year, but after living in the home, the client decided more room was needed, so the idea of a multi-purpose backyard space was born.
‘After meeting with clients to discuss their stage two, we designed on a steep, pitched ‘barn’ with feature timber doors making use of the client’s skill [as the owner of Loughlin Furniture],’ says Fabric Architecture director, Brent Fitzpatrick. The project showcases Loughlin Furniture’s skills and craftsmanship, from the Tasmanian oak barn doors and awning, to the American oak staircase and bulkhead feature ‘
The reasons for this barn aesthetic were twofold: to complement the architecture of the nearby main house, and incorporate high ceilings able to make the most of the structure’s small footprint. ‘The challenge was how to make a small footprint feel large and airy,’ says Brent. ‘This was achieved through the steep, pitched roof, allowing plenty of internal height. The loft is also stopped short of the front wall to create a large void and emphasise the volume. Velux skylights were also key to flood the interiors with natural light.’ The design also takes cues from classic Australian cottages that once lined this coastal peninsula. ‘Our Woodworkers Barn makes reference to the humble qualities of the cottage, while highlighting these details through exquisite craftsmanship,’ Brent says.
This backyard space is now used in myriad ways: a gym; a place for the kids to have movie nights with neighbours, and as an extension of the home’s outdoor entertaining area. ‘They just open the big barn doors and the guests spread from the barn to the back deck, as it is all in close proximity and visible,’ explains Brent.
‘It’s not often the end result is better than what we anticipate, but this was one of those projects. We must say it’s all credit to the clients passion, craftsmanship and style.’
