PIONEER MINI-OVERVIEW: "Pioneer Chicken (or Pioneer Take Out, as it is officially named), was a Southern California fried chicken chain once heavily endorsed by O.J. Simpson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, that boasted hundreds of locations in their heyday. Founded in Echo Park, Los Angeles in 1961 by H.R. Kaufman, he grew Pioneer Chicken with heavy franchising, though their signature recipes probably did most of the heavy lifting, all with their mascot, Pioneer Pete, driving the chow wagon high above each location. Imitation caviar invented in the 1930s could provide the solution to plastic pollution, claims Pierre Paslier, CEO of London-based packaging company Notpla. He discovered the cheap food alternative, invented by Unilever and made using seaweed, after quitting his job as a packaging engineer at L’Oréal.
With cofounder and co-CEO Rodrigo García González, Paslier and Notpla have extended the idea, taking a protein made from seaweed and creating packaging for soft drinks, fast food, laundry detergent, and cosmetics, among other things. They’re also branching out into cutlery and paper.
“Seaweed grows quickly and needs no fresh water, land, or fertilizer,” Paslier explains. “It captures carbon and makes the surrounding waters less acidic. Some species of seaweed can grow up to a meter a day.” Best of all, he says, packaging made from seaweed is completely biodegradable because it’s entirely nature-based.
Paslier noted an amazing coincidence—Alexander Parkes invented the first plastic in Hackney Wick, the same part of East London that, 100 years later, Notpla calls home. Since Parkes’ first invention, waste plastic—especially tiny particles known as microplastics, which take hundreds or thousands of years to break down into harmless molecules—has been wreaking havoc in ecosystems across the world.
Plastic pollution is proving especially damaging in the marine environment, where tiny beads of plastic are deadly to the vital microorganisms that make up plankton and which sequester 30 percent of our carbon emissions, “without us having to build any new fancy technologies,” Paslier says.
Notpla’s plans to replace plastic began with a drink container for marathons. This is, in effect, a very large piece of fake caviar—a small pouch that contains juice or water that athletes can pop in their mouths and swallow when they need rehydration. “We wanted to create something that would feel more like fruit; packaging that you could feel comes more from picking something from a tree than off a production line,” he says.
Paslier showed pictures of two postrace streets—one where refueling came in plastic containers and one where it came in edible Notpla. The first was littered with plastic bottles; the second completely waste-free.
The next step was takeout food containers. Even containers we think are cardboard contain plastic, he says, as grease from food would make plain cardboard too soggy. Working with delivery company Just Eat, Notpla has pioneered a replacement for the per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS), the so-called “forever chemical” plastics that currently line cardboard takeout containers. It has even found a way to retrofit its solution into the old PFAS plant, so there was no need to build new factories.
The company is developing soluble sachets for detergent pods, ice-cream scoops, and even paper packing for cosmetics. And there’s plenty of seaweed to experiment with, Paslier points out. “You don’t realize it’s already available massively at scale,” he says. “It’s in our toothpaste, it’s in our beer, it’s in our reduced-fat products—so there’s an existing infrastructure that we can work with without having to build any additional processes.”

Black restaurants always feel a bit apprehensive, there’s a strong sense of tradition and shortcuts that only bewilders the newcomers, but their foods are rarely bad, and this is no exception. This is probably the other good BBQ place in Seattle.
Hole in The Wall - Pioneer Square, Weekday Lunch Only
I forgot to put this place, but it was only open for three and a half hours on weekdays, so… the meat offerings are great, not the best on the list, but still respectable. They say the meat was cheap, but honestly the price feels the same as any other place here.

Reflecting on 2020

The strangest thing about 2020 was how familiar much of it felt: Working from home, extended periods of isolation, weeks and months blending together. To a much lesser degree, those are things I experience each year as a freelancer. And while I suspect it will take awhile before the full extent of the trauma we’ve all lived through this year fully sets in, right now I’m mostly focused on gratitude. I’m grateful for the health of my loved ones. Grateful I already had a work-from-home routine to maintain during the pandemic. And grateful that I was able to quarantine with my family for much of the year—which had its challenges but also its rewards too.
In my 2019 year-end post I wrote about feeling like my career was finally on an upward trajectory after several years of plateauing. This year obviously offered some new wrinkles in that regard. I made significantly less money and felt familiar fears about how sustainable this career actually is. But having less work also gave me more time to focus on the actual craft of writing. I feel like I reached a new level in terms of voice, clarity, and the ability to self-edit. I'm the sort of person who constantly (arguably, obsessively) strives to be better, and it’s rewarding to feel like that hard work is finally slowly starting to pay off.
In addition to devoting my quarantine time to mastering a favorite curry recipe, getting really into the Enneagram, finally learning to French braid hair, and rewatching all of New Girl, I also had some really cool opportunities scattered throughout the year. I interviewed John Barrowman about his surprise return to Doctor Who, which felt like a real milestone for me. I also contributed to the Los Angeles Times’ list of TV shows to binge-watch during quarantine, which appeared both online and in print. And thanks to everything going virtual this year, I was able to attend a press panel for the fifth season of This Is Us, which is the sort of thing I’m not usually able to do as a Chicago-based critic. 
My career is always a juggling act between film and TV, and this year made me appreciate how valuable it is to be able to move seamlessly between both worlds. I took on new TV assignments covering the first season of Stargirl and the second season of The Umbrella Academy, both of which were a blast to write about. And while I didn’t watch quite as many films as I did in my insane catch-up year last year, I did fill in some more major blindspots. I also contributed to The A.V. Club’s list of the best films of 2000 and shared my own ballot over on Letterboxd. Oh, and I set up a Letterboxd this year too!
Elsewhere, I made my debut on Bustle and The Takeout, and ended the year with a Polygon article about “Kind Movies” that pretty much sums up my entire ethos on storytelling. I was also named a Top Critic by Rotten Tomatoes, which was a real honor. But the pride and joy of my career remains my rom-com column, When Romance Met Comedy. I devoted a whopping 49,000 words to analyzing 25 different romantic comedies this year. And I’m really pleased with how the column has grown and with the positive feedback I’ve received.
I have to admit, I sometimes worry that year-end highlight reels like this one can make my life seem easy or glamorous in a way that doesn’t reflect what it’s like to actually live through it. I'm tremendously lucky to get to do what I do, but I also struggle a lot—both with the logistics of this career and with bigger questions about what value it brings to the world. My goal is to approach 2021 with a greater sense of intentionality. I want to be more thoughtful in my career choices, more purposeful in how I use social media, and more active in my activism and politics. I’d also like to do 20 push-ups a day everyday for the whole year, but we’ll see how long that resolution actually lasts.
Finally, on a sadder note, one other defining experience of the year was the loss of my dear internet friend Seb Patrick, who I’ve known for years through the Cinematic Universe podcast. Seb created a wonderfully positive nerd space online, and was a big part of my early quarantine experience thanks to the Avengers watchalongs I did with the CU gang in the spring. I’m so grateful for all the fun pop culture chats we got to have throughout the years, several of which are linked below. Seb is tremendously missed, and there’s a fund for his family here.

Sequel to Culture Shock, the Obito/Reader fic, the Fugaku!Tobi one, the KakaReader pining (oh lawd, the pining, i am HERE for it), tarot??, Sasori quarantine?? - mind sharing more for any of these, please? 
Totally! 
So I’m gonna be a smidge tight-lipped about the Culture Shock sequel, because there are at least three major events that occur between where we’re at now and when the sequel is set that I don’t wanna spoil. BUT I will let you know that it’s set approximately two months after the events of the Culture Shock epilogue, which is set about two years after the events of Culture Shock itself. We worked hard for a happy ending, and I intend to be thorough. A detail that I am willing to share is that Mokuba tries to get Despacito played during a wedding, and no one knows how to tell him no.
The Obito/Reader fic! I don’t remember what started that one, but it’s a post-canon fix-it fic where No One Died Okay. The reader is a pioneering graduate student in psychology, trying to get therapy and counseling in general to take off (her scholarship depends on it). So she travels to Konoha bc it’s the largest shinobi nation and makes her way through the high-ranking shinobi there. All of the Uchihas are prisoners of the state, and she tries to negotiate with Rokudaime Kakashi for some facetime with them, and eventually he agrees. BUT! There is a secret in reader’s past that puts her under suspicion, and it is up to Obito to help her out of her pickle while still being locked away. I actually got this one decently planned out, and the first couple of pages written.
The Fugaku is Tobi WIP is. Exactly what it says on the tin. lmao I was inspired when someone made a post about that panel where Tobi says “That’s my boy” when Sasuke kills Danzo, and the caption on the post was something like “man how fucked up would it be if Fugaku was Tobi lol” and a commenter was like “someone please write this”. So I started to. I have some plot holes to work out, but I’ve got about a page into it. I really like this idea, and I actually poke at it in between other projects pretty often.
The KakaReader Pining, I’ve posted some snippets here before when I was writing it. I’m about...4k or so into it? Basic premise is that reader goes on an undercover mission and accidentally gets knocked up by the mark, and bc of Kakashi’s nose he’s the first one to notice when they go on a mission together. It is then, of course, that he realizes that he has feelings for her. There is fake dating, and at one point there is only one bed. He gets her takeout. It’s very sweet.
The two tarot ones - for the Bakura one, he goes down to New Orleans and the reader runs a voodoo shop and does a reading for him, but the reading accidentally ends up being for the Spirit of the Ring, who Does Not Like being called out. The Ready or Not one, is a pre-movie Daniel/Grace where they go on a double-date with Alex and Charity to a carnival and get a three-card-spread.
The Sasori quarantine lmao Okay that one I got the idea for when quarantine started, and the basic premise is that Sasori gets wind of where Orochimaru is hiding after Konoha Crush but before Sasuke Retrieval Arc (when he’s in that body with the short blond hair and he’s pulling his best Shishio impression), and he just. Fucking murders him, because he’s tired of what a nasty bitch he is. They bitch at each other while Kabuto is burying a body in the background. I should really finish this one, it’s just a silly Sasori piece bc I love this grouchy boy a lot.
