My Artist’s Year in Review

Unfortunately, I haven’t put out much art this year. So I’m using my favourite sketch pages from this year instead of pieces. I’ve had a lot of struggles w/ my mental health and personal real-life problems, so doing full pieces seemed a daunting task. But hopefully in this new year, I’ll be able to do more full pieces!

This was a difficult time for me motivation-wise, and this was the only full page I made at that point, as most of my (now-lost) art was digital then! My favourite sketch here is the Grant Cohen in blue at the bottom.

My bestie (@harmonyblossom19 btw, hey girl) had said that MatPat gave off Fred ScoobyDoo vibes, so I drew their fusion—dubbing him “FredPat” shortly thereafter. It was the best of February’s doodles, though I’m still not proud of it. This was around the time I moved here from my old blog!

This is all of the OCs I’ve stuck together for various universes. Lilith and Star are from a D&D-inspired universe called Spires of Heavenly Light and Shadow, and of course, Lyra and Sol are from TQFTAD. I’m so in love with the Star doodle here.

January - Iri Intro!

From a somewhat short-lived thing I wanted to try out: Doing sketches of OCs just to serve as an introduction reguardless of quality. The good thing is, because quality's not a factor I can do these whenever in whatever format or polish. I just prefered doing larger pics this year

From a comics class I took spring this year. The only prompt was "conversation"... well, heated debate in this case.

Another one from that Comics class and goddamn I think the panel featured here alone is one of the hardest things I drew that semester. That's pen and ink with minimal digital edits and damn hoping one day I could somehow make a longer comic with a similar style bc it was really fun to ink honestly.

Ok but for the real context, this was an April fools project I had in the works since 2021. I turned all my active art accounts at the time into an OC Fishing irony page and sent Jade, Iri, Risa, Jpeg, and both Prisma's on a fishing trip. Not sure how I'll top that in the future... I'm not revealing until April >:)

May was when I redesigned & revealed Io to the public! They got a bunch of art this month, but the CN challenge art is my favorite of all of them.

Huh. Suprised I didn't immediately burn out because that semester was extreme in terms of work. I guess wanting to draw Io was that strong.

A pre-Artfight 2022 pic: I was Team Wither! I like doing splash pics for my own page for Artfight and this stayed my main banner for just about most of the year.

Though tbh if I do want to do more art for said project I might go tra-digital or use a grittier style. During crit I was told this looked "middle-grade"... when the world is "older-YA/Adult"... still like the pic, but damn.

*Sigh* Always wanted to go to one of these! But alas, me and my irls are all busy these days. This is based off a different project I'm working on.

I ended up debuting some different designs for my OCs for said project (notably; Iri, Risa, and Human!Midi) but separate pics for them will have to come next year. In terms of digital lineart, this was the most intense I did this year (traditional lineart comes easier to me than digital).

So... 2022. Jesus Christ

This year was rough for me on things personal, and things non-personal. I mean jesus christ every other week something came out that was hostile to artists one way or another on top of some rough patches in my life. I don't want to jinx 2023 or leave things on this note though...

I think my biggest takeaway from this year is I need to rethink a lot of things. How I want to do art, where I want to go, or even my 'digital wellbeing'. This year, I realized keeping art a Hobby or staying "part-time" (as in small gigs & private comms only) might be healthier for me in the long run. I've already had my doubts with a lot of "professional" practices when I was shooting for it (a tl:dr it felt like "no fun allowed" half the time). But realizing how horribly i've treated myself and my art with this chase? That was another thing.

I think i've done a lot of strong pics compared to past years. Especially in terms of backgrounds and not being afraid to draw them (though I could always use more practice, lol). But I've also come to terms with I've been affected by social media without realizing it and how it hurt how I do art. Basically, for the past two years I've been working under the fear of being boxed into doing one thing. Be it fanart, genres, etc. To the point I stopped doing things to force a "brand". Specifically, I stopped doing fanart unless it's oc-centric. I hid straight-up fanart, and started getting irrationally upset over the metrics fanart gets over my original works.

And I hate it. I hate how I let myself judge the value of my work over "numbers and engagement". I hate how I boxed myself in trying to avoid being boxed, because of chasing this corporate measurement of worth. And most importantly, I hate that I nearly forgot that I enjoyed making fanart, because of some dumb culture caused by social media numbers and algorithms. I'm exhausted. So for 2023, I think I want my main resolution to do better with my online life & how I treat myself and my art. I want to pull away from social media a bit more (ironic considered i just came back here heh), spend more time on the slower web & offline if possible, and break that cycle of letting numbers judge my self-worth. And maybe help others do the same. It's much easier said than done, but I don't want to do nothing about this toxic hellscape that is how art is treated online, I want to do something even if the only person I directly help is myself.

And for what it's worth, focusing on my site so far has been cathartic. It's somewhere I can set up my art, projects, weird shit, etc. on my own terms, how I like it. It's quieter over there. And I'm glad I kept working on it beyond just a "portfolio site".

But I guess I have all of 2023 (and what's left of 2022) to process that. For now, I could use some extra time to pretty-up my website some more and take a few more naps before the year ends.

Celebrating Trafalgar, Simcoe-Style

England expects that every man will do his duty- there is no quote more emblematic of today than Horatio Nelson's famous signals before going into battle on 21 October 1805. As a naval history nerd, it almost feels like a duty to commemorate the day accordingly, though I have to admit I am not a particular Nelson fan or can offer anything particularly original- there are far more eloquent people who have given very good overviews over the Trafalgar action or indeed made posts about Nelson's last words, which prompted me to approach the topic from a different angle: How were news of the Battle of Trafalgar received in Britain? And more precisely, are there sources on how some of the people I enjoy researching celebrated it? There are: a memoir compiled in the 1850s by a former servant to the Simcoe-family sheds light on the lavish celebrations- and how Simcoe almost caused a mass panic by accidentally making the local townspeople believe Napoleon had landed... Simcoe's connection to the battle starts with his middle name; his godfather Samuel Graves, then a captain, took part in the Battle of Quiberon Bay, one of the landmark British military victories that led to the year 1759 being dubbed an annus mirabilis- a "year of wonders". When the name "Victory" was chosen for a new warship that was being constructed in Chatham in October 1760, her name was intended to reflect the glory of the eponymous military successes of the previous year. In a way, through his middle name and the godfather he adored, Simcoe's personal history was intertwined with that of HMS Victory. In 1805, Simcoe was in charge of putting up defence mechanisms in the Western District to combat a dreaded French invasion, and by all accounts, this was something he was rather good at, drilling volunteers and putting watch and warning systems in place. Morale appears to have been high, as people trusted Simcoe's characteristic zeal and capability. Luckily for the inhabitants of the Western District, an invasion never occurred as Horatio Nelson defeated the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar.

Naturally, despite mourning the loss of a national hero, people also wanted to celebrate the victory over Napoleon- and if someone knew how to party, it was John Graves Simcoe who, contrary to his portrayal in a certain TV series, was a genial character who enjoyed entertaining, hosting and partying. Rather excitingly, we have the account of John Bailey, an eye-witness to Simcoe's Trafalgar-party preparations. In 1805, he was a teen and had been a servant at Wolford Lodge for some three years- he would remain there almost his entire life except for a few years he spent going to sea. Later, he became the favourite companion of Elizabeth Simcoe during her widowhood, whom he idolised. When she died in 1850, he left Wolford for good the day after her funeral. Sometime later, he decided to write an account of his time with the Simcoe family, which naturally included an account of the splendid festivities put on at Wolford celebrating Britain's decisive naval victory:

John Graves Simcoe didn't really like Nelson, who had visited Wolford Lodge once, as is evidenced in a letter dated a few years prior to Trafalgar, he wrote about Nelson to Henry Addington:

Both men were very different in terms of their personality, and I have the suspicion that the phrase "whatever may be his foibles" is a jab at Nelson's relationship with Emma Hamilton and separation from his wife Frances- an arrangement the extremely uxorious Simcoe, who wrote gushing poetry about his wife and his "wedded thoughts, most honour'd, most belov'd" after more than a decade of marriage may have found objectionable.

He didn't let his personal feelings come in the way of a good party (or rather, series of parties) though- after all, Trafalgar was first and foremost a decisive British victory against the continous threat presented by Napoleonic France.

Tragically, Simcoe would only outlive Nelson by a year and five days, dying on 26 October 1806, but his memory, and that of his Trafalgar celebrations lived on- thanks to John Bailey.

So, perhaps next year, we might take some inspiration from Simcoe on how to mark the occasion- though please don't ruin anybody's front lawn with your friends' parking cars, don't alarm your neighbours with unauthorised salutes and bonfires and take a tape measure to your living-room first to ascertain if you can fit a sixty foot dinner table inside...

Investigating the Torah’s Composition: Stages of Development

Up until the second millennium, the mainstream opinion concerning the authorship of the Torah was that it was written by Moses. By the eleventh century, however, enough observations had been made that seemed to be evidence against this idea that the mainstream conception began to shift. Between 1200 and 1688, three distinct stages in the development of scholarly opinion concerning the authorship of the Torah can be discerned. A sketch of this development is given below.

Stage One: An Appended Mosaic Composition

Whereas earlier commentators from Origen (3rd century) to the Rashi (11th century) came up with elaborate explanations for apparent contradictions and impossibilities in the Biblical text, things began to change in the generation immediately after the Rashi. Starting in the Islamic world, Jewish and Christian scholars began to make observations about the chronology and language of the Torah. Isaac ibn Yashush, writing from 11th century Spain, claimed that the kings of Edom written in Genesis 36 lived long after Moses, and so that section was written by someone after Moses. This observation resulted in him being scorned by his contemporaries. Yet the man who called him “Isaac the Blunderer,” Abraham ibn Ezra, also noted the oddity of Moses’s use of third person narrative and language that reflected the monarchical period of Israel’s history. Whereas ibn Ezra was cryptic in the implications of his observations, the Spanish-Jewish scholar Bonfils brought these conclusions to light in 14th century Damascus. Using ibn Ezra’s comments as evidence, Bonfils claimed that these verses were written by “one of the later prophets,” denying full Mosaic authorship while still asserting the inspiration of the Scriptures. Tostatus, a fifteenth century Bishop of Avila, popularized an older tradition which stated that Moses’s death and the final verses of Deuteronomy were written by Joshua (as opposed to one in which Moses cries as he obediently writes about his own death). This in itself opened up more issues, though, as Protestant scholar Andreas Carlstadt noted that the style of these final verses matched the style of the passages that preceded it.

Stage Two: A Heavily Edited Mosaic Composition

By the sixteenth century, a trio of Catholic scholars posited a different stance. Fr. Andreas van Maes, a humanist and scholar of Syriac, alongside Jesuit scholars Benedict Pereira and Jacques Bonfrere, suggested that the Torah was based on a Mosaic composition. Later inspired authors would elaborate upon the more simplistic Mosaic narrative. Such elaborations would have included adding details to a more simplistic narrative, adjusting phrasing to make it less awkward to contemporary readers, and changing the names of the locales in order to make them more readily recognizable. Their work was condemned by the Church. Despite this early condemnation, by the seventeenth century, French Protestant-turned-Catholic priest Fr. Ricard Simon actually took this position when criticizing Spinoza (see next stage, below). He argued in 1685 that the modern Torah was a heavily edited Mosaic work, and that the arrangements and elaborations of the text were themselves made by inspired scribes and prophets, making the edited work itself a product of Divine Inspiration. Though it was meant to protect the tradition of Mosaic authorship against the new position that rejected any input from Moses, more conservative elements in the Church condemned Fr. Simon and expelled him from the Oratorian order.

Stage Three: Not A Mosaic Compsition at All

In 1651, English philosopher Thomas Hobbes declared that Moses could not possibly have written the Torah based on linguistic evidence. Especially striking to Hobbes was the use of “to this day” to describe the after effects of Biblical events; to say that something is still the case “to this day” implies a long period of time between the narrated event and the narration itself. Four years later, French Calvinist Isaac de Peyrère provided more textual evidence, including the fact that Moses spoke to the people “across the Jordan” (meaning that whoever was writing was doing so in Israel, a land Moses never entered). De Peyrère’s books were burned, and he recanted his views and converted to Catholicism in order to avoid life imprisonment. Spinoza was probably the most rabid critic of the Torah, denying its Divine inspiration completely and synthesizing much of the evidence given above in order to say that it was “clearer than the sun at noon that the Pentateuch was not written by Moses.” Already excommunicated from his Jewish community, he now came under attack by Catholics and Protestants alike. An attempt was made on his life, and numerous writers (like Fr. Richard Simon, above) wrote refutations of Spinoza’s works. It was this final stage that ultimately proved to be vindicated; by the eighteenth century, a series of authors and amateur historical-critical text analysts had determined that the Torah had at least two primary sources; some believed that the Torah, which seemed to have doublets of stories, contained sources older than Moses, followed by a story Moses rewrote in his own words. This theory fell apart as it became increasingly obvious both sources were written centuries after Moses. This Two-Source hypothesis, even in its later form, was discarded after the discovery of not only doublets, but triplets of similar stories in the Torah. When German scholar W.M.L. de Wette noticed that Deuteronomy was stylistically very different from the other books of the Torah in 1804, these three sources now increased to at least four. To this day, the Four Document Hypothesis remains the strongest theory for the composition of the Torah, though the hypothesis has continually been tweaked in the past 200 years, and much remains unknown about who exactly these authors and the mysterious redactor of the text are. A Sketchy Past : The Art of Peter de Sève Book Review

A Sketchy Past is a huge hardcover art book collecting the illustrations and sketches of the world renowned character designer and illustrator Peter de Sève. With a unique and distinctive art style that is hard to forget once you’ve seen it, this giant 240 page tome showcases hundreds of paintings and drawings by the prolific artist, including never-before-published New Yorker cover roughs, behind-the-scenes animation development artwork ( including character design work for films like Finding Nemo, Ice Age ), personal sketches and more.

I’m not sure what took me so long to finally review this art book, seeing as I’m a huge fan of Peter de Sève’s art work and that the book’s publication date is way back in 2009, but I’m still glad that I’ve finally done it. Anyone who enjoys beautiful illustrations will certainly find this of great appeal. My highest recommendation.

A particularly blustery and rainy day brings a rush of blue creative energy to Bill’s mind. It’s October again, like when Georgie had gone missing. His art has been on the backburner for a while, school started a month ago and stripped him of his time and even his own personal way of thinking. It was all Algebra and Shakespearean sonnets. But now, he’ll really try and get himself back into it.

He ties his red locks back with a gray scrunchie, pulling on a sweatshirt to keep warm against the cold and the way the heater in the house has been failing for several years, it just hasn’t gotten around to being fixed. Space heaters and extra layers have always been enough for Bill and Georgie. They would never dare complain, Sharon and Zach try their best. And now Georgie isn’t there to complain to either, and Bill just goes quieter.

He really has been questioning himself recently. He wears a lot of hoodies and sweatshirts, especially the thick ones that sometimes even go down to his knees. Bev says he’s just going through a phase all girls do, having some body insecurity, it goes away after you try your hardest to like what God has given you.

He also really likes the look of his hair tucked up into beanies, a faux pixie cut. He still has to ask Sharon if he can get his hair all trimmed off, he wants it at least up to his ears, it’ll be out of the way then and he won’t have to put it up whenever it gets in his face. It’ll only be beneficial, even if Sharon doesn’t think it’s so cute.

Bill isn’t so sure it’s the same insecurity Bev has been feeling. She’s excited about growing a chest and her hips widening, but Bill can only feel fear for the impending changes of his body. He thinks it’s wrong. It hasn’t been so much of a problem before, but middle school has jump started deep feelings of discomfort with every piece of himself, except maybe his own mind.

He never has his nails groomed, but since he’ll be recording a view of his hands for this video he at least trims his nails off, shaping the squared out edges with a nail file, wincing at the sandpaper-y feel so close to his skin.

He finally does get that done though, washing the dust from his fingers and returning to find a way to set up his tablet for the angle he wants to have for this concept. It’s going to be a draw/sketch with me, hopefully turned paint with me when it comes to the watercolors he got recently. He hasn’t gotten to use them yet.

He gets his phone tilted to the paper, the camera not good enough to pick up on the subtle bumps and grooves in the paper, made for peak paint performance. He starts the camera and picks up his charcoal pencil, the one he picked up at the hobby lobby the other day when he went with Beverly so she could get some thread to embroider a design on her new denim skirt for school. He aunt had brought it for her from Portland when she came down for a week in summer, Bev just hasn’t gotten to customize it quite yet.

He starts the video with a shot of him sharpening the pencil with a small handheld pencil sharpener. “Whatup! It’s m-me bdenbrough back w-with your Saturday entertainment. Today I-I’m taking it a little slower than usual, calming a l-little. We’re d-doing a draw with me, I’m gonna b-be trying to keep a cool color sch-scheme here, and we’re just gonna have a l-little chat,” he says, smiling wistfully even though his face isn’t on camera and they wouldn’t be able to hear it.

He starts drawing out a general shape, small ovals to start out some sort of human, “I th-think I might draw a m-mermaid, get some mythical cr-creatures up in my sketch collection,” he decides out loud, drawing out a few ovals to create a torso shape and then a longer one and triangle for the fins on the bottom of the tail.

Then he starts making lines around the shape, creating smoother curves around everything until it looks almost more like it could be closer to human, sans the tail of course. The last thing he leaves in the sketch is the face. “So d-don’t mind m-my inability to make faces,” he says with a small chuckle.

He draws one eye closer and larger than the other, making sure the perspective of the facial expression matches how he made the angles of the body work. Drawing lips is always fun for him, they never look the same as the last pair of lips. He makes it more symbolic than it is. “All m-my characters lips look different. They all h-have unique things to say, and the words fall fr-from unique mouths.”

He continues adding more life to the eyes, erasing a little shine in the pupils from the side where the lighting is going to come from. He’s been working more on his shading, he’s pretty proud of how far he’s gotten in his art journey. He definitely needs to work more on anatomy, but at least he can blame bad anatomy on his art style.

“I don’t h-have a name for this ch-character yet, but maybe you g-guys can suggest some! D-down in the comments let me know what her name and story sh-should be!” He announces, he just desperately wants for his subscribers to interact more, they’ve been slowing rising and it almost worries him, becoming known would be great to him, but he also doesn’t want this to become more of an actual job to him than it already is.

He pulls out his thin tipped sharpie to line it, trying to be up like one of the big art youtubers with their fancy lineart and good coloring skills. He lines it the best he can, though his hands are often shaky and it makes for difficult art. He plans to fill the empty space with some soft music when he isn’t talking. Just to make sure it’s not too boring.

He doesn’t start talking until he uncaps his blue marker to color in her details. “So I-I’m gonna be coloring this dr-drawing in with mostly cool t-toned colors,” he explains. He gets started on coloring in the darker tones, a colorless blender can be used to remove anything that gets too intense.

He drags the tip around in thick, long, and even strokes, covering her tail evenly with the deep blue, to contrast how bright blue he’ll color in the ocean. He fills her hair in with some strokes of violet among some lilac.

The completed drawing comes out nice, not the best he could do, but he did have the pressure of filming as he did it. “Okay so sh-she seems to be completed,” he says, tilting the camera up to show his smile, “So th-that concludes our Saturday video. I-it was kinda short and quiet b-but I had fun filming it!” he finally presses the camera off, letting out a sigh of relief.

As Harry begins to properly wake more of his senses return, although his sight is slightly blurry as a consequence of heavy late night drinking, which explains the branches of blood vessels sketched across the white of his eyes.

Dragging his arms behind for support, Harry pushes himself up off the bed and his eyes immediately land on the bare back of a beautiful young woman. “Happy four years, Kiddo!” She had exclaimed, placing a light kiss on Harry’s cheek before handing him a box. “It’s a bit of a simple present but I spent a shit tonne on it so you’d better like it.”

Harry remembers how he couldn’t keep the toothy grin from surfacing after he slipped on the red beauty and how Y/N’s face lit up at his reaction.

He glances over at the girl on his bed and feels the metal burn his skin, a reminder of the dirty, unspeakable surfaces his hands have caressed since Y/N left. Guilt gnaws Harry’s throat, but then again that could just be last night’s vodka and cigarette ash resurfacing.

Wiping a hand across the surface of the kitchen island, (careful not to use his ruby hand as he didn’t want to soil the ring anymore) Harry uses his skinny arms for support and leans against the solid oak surface. The thunder at his temples had begun to dim a little since water trickled down his throat and he’s surprised because for the first time in days, Harry’s raised something else other than rancid drugs and drinks to his lips.

A cough depletes his weak lungs at even the thought of tobacco.

“Hazza, you’ll have smokers lungs before you reach 25.” Y/N laughed, before stealing the cigar from his hands. “Now we can’t have precious little Styles dying young, can we?” She giggled and patted his brown curls before taking a sharp drag herself and winking at Harry. Neither of them had been real smokers, just socially taking a puff here and there if the mood was right. Honestly, Y/N never really liked the thought of smoking, but Harry’s persuasive charms and dreamy eyes managed to crack her tough exterior a couple of times, influencing her to join him on the rare occasion.

Harry blinks back to reality, and makes a grab for the packet of cigarettes above the fridge before stumbling to an overflowing bin and binning the cancerous box.  Y/N never would have approved.

Squinting outside, he realises the roar of New York is quieter than usual and he predicts the hours are early in the morning. Perhaps it would be smart to kick out the petite naked girl in his bed before the life and paparazzi of New York awakened.

Tipping the remains of water in his glass down his throat, Harry trudges back to the bedroom and collapses on his side of the bed. Jacob was a stable guy, earning a stable wage and paid a stable rent where he lived in a stable apartment and had a pretty, well… stable life. Harry would never admit it, but deep down it awe’s him how much of an ordinary guy Jacob was and how perhaps Y/N needed a column of stability in their relationship - maybe she just needed to come home to Harry and a nice hot dinner, not an empty bed and pictures of him at a club.

Shaking the bad feeling off, Harry scrolls all the way back up to Jacobs Insta, prepared to tap off his page when something catches his eye. He brings his phone closer and taps the top left picture on his feed, ready for his suspicions to be proved wrong but for such an unstable kid himself, Harry should’ve predicted the unexpected.

Really, his heart breaks as he stares at the love of his life smile lovingly at some stable prick wearing his favourite shirt and now through all the tears, Harry sees red.

How dare she! How could she ever dare leave Harry in pieces how she did? And then to give Harry’s top to some dickhead who Harry knew he was right in hating?  The top doesn’t even suit Jacob!
