Brown Bear Freed After 20 Years of Being Caged at a Restaurant
After more than two decades in a cage at an Albanian restaurant for diners to look at, brown bear Mark is heading towards a better life in an Austrian sanctuary.
Until now, he has spent his life entertaining visitors to the Sofra e Ariut (Bear's Table) restaurant in Tirana along with his sister Liza.
But on Wednesday, under heavy anaesthetic, he started his journey to the Aberbasch shelter in northern Austria, thanks to the Four Paws animal welfare group.
Their rescue operation came too late for his sister however. She died two years ago.
Both bears were brought to the restaurant as cubs two decades ago after their mother was shot dead, according to its then owners.
There, they lived in the cage of some 100 square metres (1,075 square feet), with concrete floor, in poor conditions and on an inadequate diet, said Sajmir Shehu, the Four Paws project coordinator in Albania.
Left out in the open and at the mercy of extreme weather the bears were never allowed to hibernate, said Four Paws.
Now Mark, at 250 kilos (550 pounds) is overweight and has difficulties moving. Due to boredom and stress he has developed anxiety disorders, becoming aggressive and growling at the slightest noise.
And his condition only worsened in 2020 when Liza died.
"Mark couldn't stop crying for two or three months," Hiqmet Murati, the bears' keeper for 20 years, told AFP.
Their owners even let the pair mate, but none of the cubs survived because their stressed-out parents bit them to death, he added.
- Wider problem in Albania -
As a result of his ill-treatment, the bear needs emergency care to survive, said Shehu.
His poor diet and 20 years in a cage means he suffers from joint, muscle, eye and vital organs problems, said the Four Paws experts.
Once in the sanctuary, Mark will get the veterinary care and proper food he needs "so he can recover quickly and enjoy a life worthy of a bear", said Shehu.
But this bear's plight is not the only case that Four Paws has had to deal with, said Shehu, who is a biodiversity expert.
This the 34th wild animal the organisation with help of its peers has moved out of Albania, he said.
"Urgent action is also needed against the growing illegal wildlife trade in the country," said Four Paws coordinator Magdalena Scherk-Trettin.
The authorities in Albania say they are considering opening a sanctuary for confiscated wild animals.
Four Paws says Mark is the last of Albania's so-called "restaurant bears".
But it added in a statement: "While Mark's rescue is a significant milestone, bears in Albania are still in danger of being abused as pets or tourist attractions in the future without a change in legislation."
Big cats too were being traded illegally and suffering from poor treatment from private owners, it added.
The restaurant meanwhile will be removing the cage that held them the bears - but it will keep its name.

The "Wolves" of Teen Wolf
Let's talk about wolves. No, not werewolves, much as I love to talk about them, but wolves. More under the cut, because this is going to be a long post.
Teen Wolf is no stranger to using real wolves for filming. In this 2013 article by Hypable (unfortunately the super-helpful videos within about this subject are no longer available), the author describes a video of how animal handler and trainer Chris Edrington (his IMDb page), previously working with Paws for Effect and now Working Wildlife, brought two wolves, Shadow and Frankie, to the set of Teen Wolf for shots of Shadow baring his teeth in the "This Might Hurt" Season 3a promo. The video within the article, which would be really cool to watch if it was still available, allegedly features Edrington describing how Shadow was trained to bare his teeth for TV.
Tumblr media
(Image: The trained wolf Shadow bares his teeth. Image courtesy of MTV's season 3a "This Might Hurt" promo, linked in the above paragraph.)
Why use real wolves for TV instead of CGI? Well, back in ye olden times, or 2013, it cost a lot less to hire a real wolf for a day than to CGI one. Nowadays, CGI animals are a dime a dozen (mostly because CGI artists aren't unionized the way set artists and animal handlers in Hollywood are, as touched upon by this Guardian article). This Wall Street Journal article about filming with real wolves for HBO's True Blood asserts that, "The cost of live wolves varies, but they typically rent for under $500 a day, plus the cost of trainers." But also: "Since the animals prefer to travel in packs, six or seven additional wolves may accompany a wolf actor, but producers don't have to pay for the rest of the entourage."
Tumblr media
(Image: Trainers working with stunt wolves on the set of HBO's True Blood. Image courtesy of Wall Street Journal article linked in paragraph above.)
Of course, having real wolves on set poses a problem: wolves are not dogs. And wolves do not act like dogs. They're very cute and fluffy, but try to pet one, and they may just take your arm off. The WSJ article linked above also describes some of Steve Martin's (owner of Working Wildlife) usual suspects for TV wolves, and how they differ greatly in personality and are better suited to different filming locations and different types of scenes. It also describes times on set where actors were stopped from eating food before the wolves were due for filming, because of the safety hazard to both actor and handler.
So what do real wolves act like? Well, citing my experience working at an animal shelter (2 years handling dogs/cats, coordinating/working events, facilitating adoptions) and my experience volunteering at a wolfdog sanctuary (1 year working with mostly mid-content and few high-content wolfdogs, after extensive training about safe handling), wolves are like large Spitz breeds (Huskies, Malamutes, Akitas, etc., the Pomeranian and some other small, fluffy dogs also fall within that category), but on steroids.
I am choosing not to mention the locations or names of places I have worked, in the interest of internet privacy. If you would like to know more about my experience working with wolfdogs, feel free to send an ask! Or, visit the page for one of the following wolfdog sanctuaries/rescues: Yamnuska, Wild Spirit, Texas Wolfdog Project, Shy Wolf
You may know people describing their Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes as many things -- beautiful, majestic, energetic, intelligent, mischievous, and often, destructive. The AKC page for Siberian Huskies actually specifies that owners should never let their Husky off-lead, because of their strong desire to run at any given opportunity, but they are animals that can be friendly and good with children if well-socialized.
Wolves do not do that. They are not friendly with people, and they are certainly not safe around children. Many people keep wolf/dog hybrids (and many keep them poorly, but that's a different subject), most of them rescues from irresponsible breeders or people who thought they were getting a regular domestic dog. While some wolfdogs are incredibly well-trained, able to go on pleasant off-leash walks, and attend educational events about wolfdogs, most require an outdoor habitat with extremely specific fencing, a lot of space, and diligent attention to their mental and physical exercise needs, and may never be affectionate with their handlers.
As the WSJ article describes, Working Wildlife also keeps wolfdogs on retainer, usually high content (a high percentage of wolf DNA compared to dogs, in the 75%+ range), for scenes where wolves may not be able to tolerate actors and their movements. However, even hybrids can be unpredictable and snappy. The article also describes a time when Brit Morgan (who plays werewolf Debbie Pelt on True Blood), shot a scene with two wolfdogs, and one got too excited and snapped at her (the actress was fine, and says it's one of her favorite scenes).
From my own personal experience, wolves and wolfdogs are very skittish, generally afraid of humans, and like to communicate with your teeth. If you've ever tried to take something out of a large dog's mouth (which is incorrect, instead offer something else to pick up and redirect the dog's attention so you keep all of your fingers), well, imagine doing that but the dog is 150lbs (about 68kg) and the something is your arm. If you don't keep your mouth closed, it will quickly be investigated by a wolfdog's tongue, and the only time you should have food near anything even part wolf is when you are carefully feeding it large chunks of raw meat, which, to a wolfdog waiting impatiently for dinner, is not terribly different from the hand that's holding it.
Wolves are fascinating creatures, and generally poorly understood by both TV and by the general population. Dr. David Mech, author of the study that started the theory of "alpha wolves" and eventually was adapted into the "alpha male", has renounced that research (and begged the publisher to stop printing his outdated 1968 book), rejecting the idea of "alpha" wolves in favor of the "adult male" and "adult female", because wolves in the wild actually group into packs by family, not by some constantly fighting hierarchy of pure male dominance. You can read more about his research on his website.
Tumblr media
(Image: Dr. Mech studying arctic wolves on Ellesmere Island, where wolves have little interaction with humans and can be more safely studied up close. Image is public domain, found on the USGS website.)
So Teen Wolf doesn't have a very accurate impression of the social hierarchy of wolves. Ok, it was an MTV show that started airing in 2011, what do you expect, but! Let's bring together Hollywood wolves and Dr. Mech's research to further discuss the "wolves" of Teen Wolf.
Why do I keep putting "wolves" in quotations? Well, because the black "wolf" we start seeing in season 4, Derek's "evolved wolf form" (and is the same canine actor in season 5 when we see Theo's wolf form, and also Talia Hale in 3x08 "Visionary"), is most certainly not a wolf. It looks to me like an all-black German Shepherd or similar breed (GSDs have a good profile for playing a wolf, but the coloring tends to give them away, which is why a lot of "wolves" on TV are solid black or white -- similarly, many horses on the screen are black or white, because it's easier to paint over markings and match colors than with chestnuts or bays, which are astronomically more common colors). However, I was unable to find any information about the doggy actor, and no handler or organization was listed in Teen Wolf's credits for the appropriate episodes, so the actual stats of the dog in question are unknown. If you do have any information, please feel free to share!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Images: (top left) Wolf!Derek jumps down from a rocky ledge, showing his size in comparison to Araya Calavera. (top right) Wolf!Derek, with glowing blue eyes, runs towards Kate Argent. The dog is considerably less than waist height. (bottom left) Wolf!Theo chases Mason and Liam through the high school. We can see that the dog is of medium-large size, maybe 50lbs (22.5kg). (bottom right) A closer view of Wolf!Theo shows the same white markings that Wolf!Derek also has. Images are all screencaps from Teen Wolf: 4x12 "Smoke and Mirrors" and 5x02 "Parasomnia".)
Why not use a real wolf for these scenes, when Teen Wolf hired real wolves for the season 3a promo? Well, for the behavioral reasons listed above, it wouldn't be possible for a real wolf or a wolfdog to safely tackle Jill Wagner in 4x12 when the cue is that Derek, in wolf form, leaps up and attacks her, which is why a doggy actor is used, and Jill Wagner does a convincing job of pretending she's not playing with a well-trained dog. Again, CGI was still expensive, so sizing it up or CGI-ing the entire "wolf" would have been a lot of work, when most audiences wouldn't be able to immediately tell a large dog from a wolf.
But most audiences are not me. And I can tell the difference between a wolf and a wolfdog and a dog pretty well, mostly from my experience working with wolfdogs, and coordinating with shelters who believed they had been handed a wolfdog and couldn't adopt it out to the public. For reference, here's a wolf (Romeo, beloved local wolf of Juneau, Alaska, known 2003-2009, est. at least 8yo at time of death) next to a large dog (left), medium dog (center), and several dogs (right). You can learn more about him in this NatGeo article.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Images: (left) Romeo, a black wolf, touches noses with a large black dog, who is much smaller than him. (center) Romeo stands next to a sitting medium herding-type dog, which is dwarfed in comparison. (right) Romeo stands with the large black dog, the medium dog, and another medium herding-type dog, all of whom are much smaller than him. Center photograph by Jos Bakker, left and right source unknown.)
So how big would real wolves have been? Well, setting aside anything about Theo, because he's a chimera and who knows whether he's supposed to have a wolf form or a coyote form or a coywolf form, here's my rendition of a size chart containing a real wolf, the "wolf" on Teen Wolf, and Jill Wagner.
Tumblr media
(Image: A size comparison of the Teen Wolf "wolf", a grey wolf, and Jill Wagner. Jill Wagner is 5'8", the wolf is 2'8" at the shoulder, and the Teen Wolf "wolf" is scaled to be 2" at the shoulder. In cm, Jill Wagner is 172cm, the wolf is 81cm, and the Teen Wolf "wolf" is 61cm. The Teen Wolf "wolf" is quite a bit shorter than waist-height, while the real wolf's ears are at belt height. The wolf is from Smithsonian Magazine. The picture of Jill Wagner is one I pulled from Google. The Teen Wolf "wolf" is Talia Hale from 3x08. The poses were difficult to match because Jill Wagner tends to be bipedal and canines tend to walk on four legs.)
In summary:
There's no such thing as "alpha wolves".
Wolves are big. Very big. Much, much bigger than you think they are.
The "wolves" on Teen Wolf are only a little more than half the size of real wolves. They are very small.
Some other trivia for Teen Wolf viewers: The correct amount of whiskey to pour is 2oz (59mL) or about 1/5 to 1/4 of an average scotch glass.

After 20 years in a cage, freedom for Albania brown bear
Agence France-Presse / 8 December 2022

TIRANA — After more than two decades in a cage at an Albanian restaurant for diners to look at, brown bear Mark is heading towards a better life in an Austrian sanctuary.

for  a  protective  starter . ((Because gunnie hasn’t been protective in a while lol))
@dxncingxqueen
Gundham wasn't a fool, like most might believe, he knew at their very core that animals were animals. Some in his circles hated him, said that what he did was detrimental for wildlife because he 'accustomed them to humans', and while partically correct, they always miss one vital piece: they are only calm around humans when he is there. He gains their trust, eases their frights, and keeps them calm enough that other people can safely interact with minimal issue. If another person gains their trust, they might do the same, but there weren't many people willing to face down something so large as a bear to gain it's friendship.
Every so often, these people that have condemed him for his work try to 'help' an animal of his by 'freeing it'. Never once has it ended well.
The sort of fool that releases a near full grown bear on the grounds of a school, he unfortunately has had the pleasure of meeting. Oh how they taunted him when he had returned to his animal sanctuary to find the lock broken and quite a few of his animals 'saved'. he had shown up rather quickly, simply by luck alone allowing him to stumble in on the intruder as they opened a cage of domesticared pigeons, ones that would have no hope of surving out on their own. Near all of his animals were still within the shed, some in their very enclosures, not seeing a need to flee like this person goaded them to.
Only one was truly missing, and of course it had to be the bear.
It was one of Grizner's cubs from a pervious year, it now grown enough to head out on it's own. It was to be tagged and then transported to a national park somewhere in the states where the native bear population had suffered due to lack of food and a harsh winter, all in the hopes of replenishing and rebalancing the delicate ecosystem. But no one ever asked questions, they simply saw a bear that was 'trapped'...in an open pen with food, water and toys galore....where it could have left anytime it wanted to, really. He wasn't worried about it, it wasn't like he didn't know where to look for the growing cub, and it was far enough away from the school ground proper that it was very unlikely to head in that direction, with the noise and large amount of people, as opposed to the woods just a few yards off.
Unless, of course, it grows upset after being poked and prodded by those wishing to 'help' and it runs off in any direction in order to get away.
It hadn't gotten far, Gundham could see it when he had run out of his sanctuary in a panic, and while it hadn't gotten too close to school grounds, it had gotten too close to Naya, whom he had just parted ways with after breaking for lunch.
He didn't even think, simply taking off in their direction just in time to put himself between an agitated adolescent bear and his tiny girlfriend. She was pulled close to his chest, his back having taken the full force of a swatted paw that raked from shoulder to near his hip. He fell with the blow, the breeder doing his best to keep from crushing Naya as he shouted in pain.
After the initial chaos, the bear seemed to recognize Gundham despite its ire, it lowering back to the ground with a roar as he spoke to it as calmly as he could. He couldn't get up from the ground with how his body screamed in pain, the breeder calming the bear where he sat on his knees until it lost interest and simply...wandered back into the pen it had been 'saved' from.
On his hands and knees now, Gundham was given a moment to breathe, despite each breath sending a searing pain through his entire torso. "Are you unharmed?" Rough, strained, it was the first thing he had said that wasn't to the bear.

Introducing Santana! Oklahoma Bobcat Rescue
Although she spent most of her time in a domestic situation, and small outdoor enclosure, the second Santana stepped out onto her big, grassy habitat she wagged her tail in excitement. Santana is quite social compared to other bobcats, but also prefers her alone time away from people.
Species: Bobcat (Lynx rufus)
DOB: May 10, 2010
Sex: Female
Arrival Date: September 15, 2022
Rescue Story: On Thursday, September 15, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge traveled over 500 miles round trip to rescue a 12-year-old bobcat, Santana, in Geuda Springs, Kansas. In her role as Rescue Chair for the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance, Tanya Smith, President and Co-Founder of Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, received a call for help about a possible lynx that needed a home.
The man who owned the cat was killed in a tragic accident and the spouse was unable to continue to care for the animal. On arrival at the home in Geuda Springs, it was immediately obvious that this was a very large bobcat (Lynx rufus) and not a lynx.
Santana was originally purchased in Montana. She has been spayed and had her front paws declawed. She was given an exam and rabies vaccination by a local veterinarian before making the long trip back to Eureka Springs. She has a very sweet disposition and, while a little surprised to see...

In addition to volunteering, there are also other ways to help furry friends in need, such as making monetary donations or donating gently used items to animal shelters or rescue organizations. Furry Friends in Washington has an account with Divine Consign, a consignment store, where you can donate items to be sold and the proceeds will go towards supporting the organization. Your tax-deductible donation will help fight cruelty and make a life-changing difference for animals across America. - Humane Society of the United States: Whether by sharing your time, money, or even your birthday, there are many ways to donate to help animals through the Humane Society of the United States. Monthly giving is an option, and just $20 a month (or whatever you can afford) will make an impact in the ongoing fight to protect all animals. - Best Friends Animal Society: You can donate to honour someone for their birthday, sponsor an animal, and more. Your gift will help homeless pets needing a second chance at life and will help reach animals around the country as well as loved ones near and far. - Animal Charity Evaluators: An independent watchdog group specifically for animal-related organizations, Animal Charity Evaluators has declared Animal Equality one of the top animal protection organizations in the world every year since 2014. - Petco Love: In partnership with animal welfare organizations and 1,500 Petco stores across the country, Petco Love helps bring pets together with loving families every day. If you have a favourite dog breed, find a breed-specific rescue group in need of donations. - CharityWatch: CharityWatch is one of three organizations that rate charities based on their effectiveness and transparency. Visitors can make a donation for full access to their reports or view a list of their top-rated charities. Understanding the Impact of Your Donations Donating to pet charities can make a direct impact on both animals and people in need . Pet Adoption and Rescue
Pet adoption and rescue are crucial for ensuring that animals find loving homes and are saved from mistreatment or euthanasia. Fortunately, there are numerous organizations and resources available for those interested in adopting a pet or supporting animal rescue efforts. One of the most popular resources for pet adoption is Petfinder . This website allows users to search for adoptable pets from a network of over 11,500 shelters and rescues. Users can search for dogs, cats, and other animals, and can filter results based on location, age, and other criteria. Petfinder also offers a checklist for new adopters to help make the transition as smooth as possible. Another resource for pet adoption and animal rescue is Rescue Me . This organization helps dogs, cats, horses, birds, and other animals find homes through its online database of adoptable pets. Users can search by animal type, breed, location, and other criteria. Rescue Me also has a presence on Facebook, with pages dedicated to dog rescue, cat rescue, and animal rescue in general. Read the full article

The toad very literally drops from the sky and delivers information about a wildlife sanctuary where they’ll all be safe. I’m disappointed by the turn, but will allow this one deus ex amphibia. DON’T LET ME DOWN SHOW
They all decide to go, but the prey animals rather rightly point out their trust issues. Badger has them all evoke this oath by raising their right paw/wing/claw, etc., and I feel it important to note the snake has none of this, so I’m prepared for that loophole.
Looks like we may well be heading toward idea, then, of instinct and base drives versus personal will and communal good, which is a pretty meaty thing to make the core of a show for children, and I’m into it. A little warily, now they’ve backtracked on Toad, but it’s only episode 1 out of 14, so there’s tons of time left for the story to show some weight.

WE ARE BURNING!
Tumblr media
Does not cool. The animals are trapped, desperate. They are on the way, static, in shock, without reaction, exhausted in the search for water, a refuge in their own refuge, disfigured. The paws burn from trying so hard to escape from the embers. Muscles, tendons and bones exposed.
Where the flames pass, the green turns gray and the black powder indicates the trail of the fire, the destruction. Every three steps, a stop to compose yourself. It is difficult to breathe, it burns, the heart cries and tries to measure what the eyes reach: a sanctuary dressed in hell, and the devil is called negligence.
I drew the pain in the Pantanal in my mind, based on reports from fellow journalists who are there in these days of new environmental tragedies. It is happening now. There, we're burning like never before. The police are investigating those responsible for the fires, there are already five open investigations. That green imagery, of exuberant fauna, is now an illusion. It doesn't fit in books or postcards. No, we are not the nation that preserves the most.
The drought at this time, added to the lack of commitment to the collective, puts the region at risk every year, and in each of them the chance to invest more in prevention and care systems is lost. According to Ibama, more than 90% of the fires in the Pantanal are caused. In the largest wildlife refuge in the Americas, there are no fixed brigade members. There is no plan for our preservation. We are burning there.

COVID-19 crisis affected animals in Thailand.
Since 2019, Covid-19 virus has hit Thailand. This has affected many aspects of the country and one of them is animals. During the pandemic, Thailand’s animals including both wild and domestic are affected differently. For wild animals, there is a change in behavior and some of them can be seen more frequently. However, for stray dogs, and stray cats, the pandemic causes them a negative impact.
Tumblr media

It can be seen that many factors contribute to those stray animals since the COVID-19 pandemic which leads to a slow economy, especially the tourism industry. In addition, as per the government guidelines were to maintain social distancing. Therefore, the restaurants need to be closed as they are not profitable due to the limited number of customers. Hence, street dogs/cats were not regularly getting fed like the one that owned but this situation made things become worse.
“Governments around the world have no option but to call for and then extend lockdowns to protect people. However, what this has meant for millions of animals living on the streets is a sudden lack of their regular food and water supply from local communities, and this can quickly lead to animals starving,” said Keren Nazareth from Humane Society International (HSI) – a global animal welfare organization that saves and protects cats and dogs in different parts of the world.
Tumblr media
Moreover, cats and dogs in animal shelters also have been impacted. Soi Dog Foundation is one of the facilities facing cancellations from regular donors. Its operation director McElroy said the situation has proved “very difficult” particularly for NGO that do not get government financing.
“We can only hope that the downturn doesn’t last too long. We are continually looking at innovative ways to raise funds but they are also difficult during this period,” he told CNA, adding the pandemic has also produced “a severe knock-on effect” on the shelter’s population.

The current situation is a bane to animal sanctuaries. Before the pandemic, Bang Saphan, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province had a relatively high number of neglected stray animals which were adopted by local animal sanctuaries. But now, the situation is getting worse because of the increasing number of stray animals, making the procurement of food more difficult.
“The intake of animals abandoned at shelters is also increasing day by day, either with the mistaken belief that animals can pass on COVID-19, or that the virus has left owners unable to care for them, ”said  FOUR PAWS international.
In contrast, wild animals thrive in this occurrence. straitstimes had reported that many marine national parks officials had reported the sighting of multiple herds of manatee, dolphins, reef sharks, and primates in various ages in places they usually cannot be seen.

On Wednesday (April 22) alone, a rare herd of 31 manatees was spotted in the Ju Hoi cape in the southern province of Trang.
Leatherback turtles laid at least 11 nests since November in the country, the highest in two decades.

“The situation is getting better, animals are thriving all over the place,” the park’s chief Narin Pinsakul said. “We have seen elephants, serows, hornbills, and even tigers. Nature has been healing considerably over the past months.”

The Dark Crystal: Division AU-Prologue
Tumblr media
Another world, another time, right?
...
No.
No more waiting for things to change.
This world, this time
We'll fix things.
Things wont be the same... they'll be better.
We will make things better this time.
Thousands of trines ago, this land was whole, and the creatures of Thra lived in harmony. Perhaps not in peace, but the order of the world was in balance. However, an evil presence came from the stars and struck the Crystal of Truth, the heart of Thra, dividing the land and shattering the harmony, throwing the inhabitants of this land into chaos. The most widespread species, the Gelflings, were split into 7 clans and separated. As the evil, which came to be known as 'The Darkening', continued to poison the land, the 7 clans had to evolve to suit their new harsh, ever changing environments.
The Stonewood Clan, suffering from long, terrible winters, grew thick manes and thick fur on their tails. They became one of the most resilient and hardy clans. These Gelflings mastered fire and the art of forging weapons strong enough to fell the savage beasts that became more prominent after the Darkening. They built their home, Stone in the Wood, and stayed there, unsure if they could cross the cracks in the land caused by the Darkening, and unwilling to find out.
The Grottan Clan nearly succumbed to the Darkening, but managed to form a symbiotic relationship with the Arathim, a hive mind of frightening arachnids. The Arathim ruled the caves of Grot, and had done so for centuries. However, the Darkening snuck up on them in the form of a herd of darkened Nurlocs. The enraged beasts attacked the Arathim and managed to destroy many of their nests before the Gelflings arrived. Using their wings and long ranged weapons, the Gelflings, with the aid of the Arathim, drove the darkened Nurloc away, deep into the cave system before closing off all but a few entrances. Through one of the entrances fell the seed of a Great Tree, which, under the care of the Grottans, would go on to become Vliste-Staba, the Sanctuary Tree.
The Vapran Clan was forced into the harsh mountains, and it soon became obvious that those with wings had a significantly higher survival rate. They used their magical knowledge to make potions that would allow the males of their clan to grow wings after a few generation. Over time, their wings, along with the rest of them, became more and more avian, until they sported feathered wings, talons instead of paws, large eyes and a crushing bite. Their Maudra's and elders kept them above the clouds, away from the chaos below, and convinces the next generations that their whole world was the mountain range above the clouds.
Of all the Gelfling clans, the Sifa Clan changed the most. They were forced off of their cliff side homes and backed more and more into Thra's ocean. As a result, they evolved gills and strong, finned tails. They sported bioluminescent markings and vibrant, sturdy fins. In the ocean, they were safe from the Darkening, and were free to travel around the ocean as they pleased. They built an underwater village and tamed some of the aquatic wildlife. They remain there even now, forgotten by history
The Swamp of Sog is where the Drenchen Clan was forced. Initially loosing many to the dangerous terrain, the clan made their way to an enormous tree, and made their home within it, while still keeping it alive and healthy. They developed thick, amphibian tails and natural camouflage in the form of green, brown and gray markings. Their eyes are frog-like and they grew gills and webbed paws. These Gelflings are very strong, and have a knack for trap making and catching aggressive aquatic creatures.
When the Darkening divided Thra, the Spriton Clan lost their connection to the beasts of Thra, and had to fight to tame the savage creatures that roamed the Sun Plains. Physically, they remained mostly the same, the only real change aside from the increase in strength and speed was the development of light brown stripes that helped them camouflage on the plains. They domesticated an equine-like species and learned to ride them, using them to better hunt and plow land.
Finally, the Dousan Clan, the largest and most colourful of the Gelfling clans, retreated into the desert. The Darkening, as it had with the rest of Thra, altered the desert, making the heat of the suns nearly unbearable to childlings. Faced with a high infant mortality rate, the Dousan evolved pouches that they could use to shield their children from the heat of the Three Brothers. Their long legs also keep their vital organs away from the hot sand. They have a deep respect for the balance of life and death, and never kill unless it is necessary. When they do kill, they use every part of the animal, and are sure to honour its life. They treat all of the deserts creatures with the utmost respect, and are the only ones who have risked venturing into Darkening infected areas in search of a way to fix things. Those who tried, however, never returned.
Now, centuries later, during the long Era of Thra's Division, another Great Conjunction is going to occur soon, and those most connected to Thra can feel the land's fear. The fear that this last surge of power will enable the Darkening to consume everything. Thus, it is decided among the 7 Great Trees that heroes must be chosen. Each tree will select a Gelfling to embark on a journey to find the Crystal, which has been wiped from memory, before the land is divided completely, and Thra is lost to the Darkening forever.

from the moment finley bauer was born , animals have been at the epicentre of her life . you see , finley bauer was born on march 25th 2000 in durban , south africa to charlotte and ragnar bauer . both of who have dedicated their lives to researching , rehabilitating & preserving the wildlife of africa . charlotte bauer worked for a rehabilitation centre for turtles & ragnar bauer worked as a ranger in kruger national park . so it was no surprise that finley followed in both of their footsteps when it came to their love of animals . animals to finley , no matter how big or small , were ( and still are ) the most special and precious creatures in the world and should be looked after no matter what . it was the first thing she ever really understood and the first thing her parents taught her .
throughout her childhood , finley lived a life many may have envied for one reason or another . for the most part , she had lived with her mother in st lucia where she spent the majority of her free time with her mother at the turtle sanctuary she worked at learning and helping in any way she could . but once the school holidays rolled around … finley traveled the 5 hour journey up to kruger national park to spend the weeks with her father . those , if she was being honest , were her favourite moments of all time . she was only quite young but her father allowed her to not only go on tour after tour with him but she was even allowed to witness some of the most heart warming scenes of the rehabilitation of many animals that had been injured by poachers . it was moments like that , that really cemented in her from an early age about what she wanted to do in life . all she wanted was to be able to help animals in the way her parents did and there was nothing that was going to stop her and becoming a wildlife vet was exactly how she was going to do it .
but at the age of twelve , finley’s life was moved half way across the world due to her mother getting a new job — one in her home town of coston , north carolina . if finley had it her way , she would have stayed with her dad . moving from sous africa , her home , was the last thing she wanted to do but both her parents agreed that kruger national park wasn’t the best place to raise a child so finley swapped her life in south africa for one in coston , north carolina in the united states .
it was an adjustment to say the least . moving to a new town was hard enough to begin with but throw in a small town where everybody knows everybody & a slightly odd pre-teen with a different accent and it makes it even harder . but finley tried to make the best out of a not so great situation , after all if there was one thing that finley bauer was it was adaptable . her parents always thought she was one of the most laidback energetic kids they’d ever known . she had that seemed to last for hours on end and was open to just about anything in the world — something of which they said was a blessing and a curse because adaptable may be something finley is but trouble would have to be the word that describes her perfectly . no matter what , trouble seemed to find her and she seemed to find trouble . which may have been one reason why it wasn’t all that long before finley fell in step with the pogues like she’d been there from the beginning . south africa may always be home to finley but coston quickly became one of her favourite places in the world once she started to settle in .
not much changed throughout her teen years . she was still getting up to mischief , still exploring the world around her and most importantly , still working towards becoming a wildlife vet . not once did the promise she made to her father when she was only 6 years old waiver . it was just about the only thing she took deadly serious in her life . between studying and signing herself up for beach cleans , volunteering for N.E.S.T every year when it came to laying and hatching season , advocating for not only animal rights but human rights as well , it was any wonder that she did find time to be dragged into pogue shenanigans . but somehow she did because the pogues quickly became like a second family to her . she would do anything for any one of them .
which was why once college came around finley found it so hard to leave . she’d thought leaving south africa was hard , but leaving coston and the pogues behind for college ? she had never remembered crying so hard . all she could do was remind herself that this was what she wanted . she wanted to go to college . she wanted to study zoology so she could get into veterinary school . because without it , her dream of helping save wildlife would never come true . plus , it wasn’t like she’d never see them again . she’d only applied for a college on the main land that had an outstanding reputation in science fields , which meant her friends and mum were only a ferry ride away from her if she ever got homesick . it was almost like she’d never left .
PERSONALITY & EXTRAS
a pogue but could also cross over into kook territory if she REALLY wanted to , but this just in : she doesn’t want to . she , her mum and her mum’s boyfriend who’s been living with them for the past 6 years all live on the outskirts of town in a nice little comfortable 2 story home . the bauer family is nowhere near struggling but they’re nowhere near able to live in figure 8 .
a literal ball of energy . has a hard time keeping still . you’ll catch her leg bouncing if she sits for longer than 5 minutes but it’s fine !! give her a little prod and she’ll give you a lil sheepish smile before quitting it …… until about 3 seconds later
v bubbly v friendly . will talk to just about anyone if they don’t give off dodgy vibes . basically just a lil ray of sunshine .
one of the most laidback people you’ll meet . planning isn’t really her thing , she’s a go with the flow kinda gal !! has been caught saying , it’ll be right far too many times in her life even when things have in fact not been right in the end .
will give just about anything a go . believes that an oops is better than a what if . which is exactly why she’s gotten in trouble more times than anyone can count .
loyal to a fault !! will have the back of anyone she loves till she dies . once you have finley on your side , there’s no getting rid of her . she’d kill for the people she loved .
i say she’d kill for the people she loved …. but she really is more on the pacifistic side of things . but at the end of the day , she would fight someone if that was the only thing left to do . she’s kind up to a point . she’s friendly up to a point . she’s helpful up to a point . she’s no doormat that people can walk over .
not that one may ever think that finley bauer was a doormat . because she ? she can be loud ! she can make her opinion heard ! if she doesn’t like something , she’ll say it outright . she can have a real mouth on her .
you’d think she’d be vegan but …. no . the only thing she doesn’t eat is red meat but everything else ? she calls it her personal downfall . but she does try to keep her meat intake down to a minimum . she just has a weakness for seafood okay , no one is more sorry than her . she’ll only eat it if it’s sustainably sourced though so that’s 1 thing

judges people on how they treat animals and how animals react to them . she will immediately distrust you if you don’t like animals .
has an australian shepherd called rafi aka rafiki  ( originally was named scout but she wasn’t having that ) when he was only 2 and she 15
wants to eventually specialise in big cats ( lions , cheetahs , etc. ) or elephants but she has MANY years to figure that out
will watch every nature / wildlife documentary in the world even though she knows they’ll make her cry like a little baby
