Position of Paper & Pulp Industry in India

Indian economy started promoting for paper less economy since Mr. Narender Modi took reign of PM. The entire system was processed towards digitalisation as the government also started sending notices and challans over email Id or at different digital platforms instead of sending paper document via speed posts. In fact, people have also shifted their accounting and book – keeping process on different software systems such as Tally Prime, Tally ERP, Busy etc. Resulting the fact, that the demand of paper became less in the market, due to which the paper mills of India started losing businesses.

According to CK PAPER MART, the twisting fact is that, the demand of prime Kraft paper has been decreased as now the people are no more using paper for writing purposes but the demand of brown kraft paper has been increased into packaging business. There are other types of paper such as White bleach kraft paper, SBS etc. are also one of the prominent part of packaging industry. The kraft paper is demanded for manufacturing of carry bags, corrugated boxes, honeycomb manufacturing for packaging etc. India is having two different segment of packaging papers, firstly, India is having more than 900 paper mills, which are into manufacturing of kraft paper or packaging paper. Secondly, a large segment of packaging kraft paper is also imported from USA and Europe, which is better in strength and quality as compared to Indian kraft. During last two years, i.e., 2021 and 2022, the export of kraft paper was too high due to which hundreds of new paper mills were started but now, most of them are hit by global recession and are almost at the urge of shut down. The paper mill owners of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are agreeing that, due to low demand, global recession and rising inflation level, they have to take harsh decision of closure of the production processes and the during the first quarter of 2023, more than 20 mills have been completely shut down affecting the livelihood of more than 26000 people in India.

The managing director of prominent paper mill stated that they have closed down the production related activity during April and May 2023 because of lower demand. Other than paper mills of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, paper mills of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan were also closed down as the global crisis and steep inflation rate impacted the consumption process of kraft paper. The President of ‘The Indian Recovered Paper Traders Association (IRPTA) mentioned that the entire situation of mill shut down arose because the kraft mills are making huge losses as they were working only on gap of INR 8 to INR 9 per kg against waste paper and finish paper. In simple terms, the prime paper produced by Indian mill manufacturers were selling just say the price of Rs. 15, which is of good quality then the stocklot paper imported from overseas have been sold at the price of Rs. 7, despite the fact that quality of stocklot paper is equivalent to waste paper.

At the time duration of closure of the Kraft paper mill, the waste of Kraft paper was actually being sold at INR 17000 per metric tonnes which was of 18 BF and 100 GSM whereas the prime Kraft Paper was being sold at INR 25000 per metric tonnes which was also of 18 BF and 100 GSM and this nominal gap was not enough to match with growing losses. The prominent paper mill from Uttarakhand mentioned that the demand of kraft paper is quite short throughout the globe whereas the inflation rate is also higher. Earlier, India was exporting lot of packaging products such as corrugated boxes and Paper Carry Bags. But now, due to low overseas demand, the corrugated box manufacturers were also not operating at full capacities. Although, the mill owners are hopeful that the global market might pick up within next two quarters as the shutdown of mills would correct the prices of kraft paper.

Kraft paper is basically a kind of recycled paper and it is no longer remained monopoly of Indian and Chinese mills because the paper mills of developed countries have also installed the recycling plants and they are also offering good quality kraft paper at the prices lower of Indian mills due to which the Indian paper mills are not been able to compete with international paper mills. The paper mills of Russia and Malaysia are offering the kraft paper at prices lower than 20% as compared to the prices offered by Indian paper mills. The fact cannot be denied that, during year 2022 the paper import was 2802.38 USD Million and same was just 742.45 USD Million in year 2021, indicating that the people of India themselves are also preferring to use imported kraft paper instead of Indian kraft because of prices and quality. In last two years, the production capacity of kraft paper has been expanded by 40% in proportion of the demand whereas the actual expansion required was just between 18% to 20%. In order to match with demanded capacity, the paper mill association have been agreed to shut down their production process for five days every month in order to equalise demand and supply.

In 2023, the paper mills of India have suffered huge losses, due to which the paper mill association of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan have formed cartel and have decided to follow the business pattern of Paper mills of Foreign countries. The paper mills operating in northern areas are also planning to shut down the operating for five days in month as like paper mills of South and Western India.

There are different types of Kraft paper manufactured by Paper Mills, such as Virgin Kraft, Bleach Kraft, Poly Craft, Absorbent Kraft Paper, etc. and these kraft paper are used for different purposes. The paper mill from Punjab has also been shut down in order to manage their existing stock as the paper mill was going to through difficult time. The corrugated box manufacturers have received 20% lesser orders as compared to previous year. Although, the chances of demand could be possible from Indian market as the demand of corrugated boxes from Himachal Pradesh rises during May and June because of seasonal aspect as the boxes for Apple packaging were in high demand. But the existing corrugated box manufacturers were not prepared for this and could not determine the size of boxes and were not been able to fulfil the orders.

While the export of Kraft paper from India has been concerned then the packaging paper are also being exported as during 2020, the floating medium and test liner export was approximately 2 lakh tones each month and it remained continued till several months. Although, the export processes started declining in 2023 because of certain issues such as bad odour from Indian kraft, improper logistics, run ability and sub – standard quality. It is recommending to kraft manufacturing mills, that, if these issues can be curbed then it will act as huge opportunity for packaging industry. India was exporting kraft paper into Far East, Middle East, Latin America and African countries. The export could have been possible in 2020 and 2021 because of compulsion and necessities, not because of choice.

NAB UNVEILS DETAILS OF NAWAZ SHAREEF'S ASSETS

Former premier has eight bank accounts; shares in four companies.

ISLAMABAD:

The country’s prime graft buster – the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) – has submitted a report to an accountability court, providing complete details of the movable and immovable assets of convicted former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Islamabad Accountability Court-II judge Azam Khan on September 10 declared Nawaz Sharif a proclaimed offender in a gift repository – Toshakhana – case after the PML-N supreme leader failed to appear before the court despite repeated summonses.

The court had also initiated the process to confiscate Nawaz’s properties and directed NAB to make his arrest through Interpol. Nawaz has been in London since November 2019 when the government gave him a rare permission to fly abroad to get medical treatment for debilitating health conditions.

On Friday, NAB investigating officer Raheel Azam submitted the report for which details had been sought from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

According to the SECP, Nawaz Sharif owns 467,950 shares in Muhammad Bakskh Textile Mill, 343,425 shares in Hudabiya Paper Mills, 22,213 shares in Hudabiya Engineering Company and 48,606 shares in Ittefaq Textile Mills.

He has eight accounts in various private banks, including three foreign currency accounts. He has Rs612,000 in five bank accounts and in his foreign currency accounts, Nawaz has €566, $698 and £498 respectively.

The Lahore Development Authority (LDC), The Galiyat Development Authority (GDA), additional-deputy commissioners of Lahore and Sheikhupura and assistant-commissioner of Murree also reported that Nawaz and his dependents have properties in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Murree and Abbottabad.

According to the report, Nawaz owns a bungalow in Murree, a 15 kanal house in Gali, Abbottabad and property in Upper Mall Lahore.

He and his dependents own more than 1,752 kanals of agriculture land which includes 936 kanal in Mouza Manak in Lahore, 299 kanal in Mouza Baduksani, 103 kanal in Mouza Mall Raiwind in Lahore, 312 kanal in Mouza Sultan, 14 kanal in Sheikhupura district and 88 kanal in Mouza Ferozwatan.

NAB reveals stunning details of Shahbaz Sharif assets and gifts to and from sons

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has revealed more details about the shady transactions by former Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif.

According to the Anti-Graft body the PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif gave more than Rs. 24 crores 22 lakh as gifts to his wife and children while Shahbaz Sharif received Rs. 42,680,678 as gifts from his sons.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has released details of flats bought in London by Leader of the Opposition and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif during his exile.

According to a document released by the NAB, Shahbaz Sharif bought four flats worth more than one million pounds in the UK during his exile.

As per NAB, PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif took loans from various businessmen, Barclays Bank, Asma Dar, and others.

NAB revealed that a flat was bought in London in 2005 by Shahbaz Sharif worth more than 235,000 pounds.

For the flat, 75,000 pounds was borrowed from a businessman and more than 0.1 million pounds from Barclays Bank.

According to the document, the second flat was bought in London in 2007 for 160,000 pounds. To buy the flat, Shahbaz Sharif borrowed 16075 pounds from a businessman and 143,000 pounds from Barclays Bank.

NAB report reveals Nawaz Sharif’s assets detail

NAB documents stated that the third flat was purchased in 2007 for 650,000 pounds, for which the PML-N President borrowed 40,000 pounds from a businessman and 547114 pounds from Barclays Bank.

Shahbaz Sharif bought the fourth flat in London in 2009 for 286,000 pounds during his exile, for which the businessman lent him 2230,607 pounds.

Islamabad: Pakistani premier’s 20 advisers and special assistants have declared their assets and nationalities. The list of their possessions were published on the official website of Pakistan government’s cabinet division. At least six special advisers stated that they have dual nationalities as others announced self-declaration of their movable and immovable assets worth millions of dollars.

Many Pakistanis hailed the decision saying the declaration demonstrates PM Khan’s commitment towards accountability and has set new standards of transparency by the government. However, the move led to strong criticism by opposition leaders over dual nationalities of the advisers.

Out the 20 aides of Prime Minister Imran Khan, six declared that they are dual nationals. They include:

6. SAPM on Digital Pakistan Tania Aidrus - Canadian citizenship by birth

Earlier, Dr. Moeed Yusuf’s name was also on the list but later it was clarified that he had the US residency and only holds citizenship of Pakistan as per the affidavit submitted to the government. “I have not returned to the US since I took up my current responsibility, have no employment or income in the US nor do I have any millions worth properties abroad” Dr. Yusuf clarified.

Who is the wealthiest of them all?

The wealthiest special assistant to the prime minister (SAPM) is Power Division and Mineral Resources Assistant Shahzad Syed Qasim who has assets worth over Rs4billion followed by SAPM on Petroleum Nadeem Babar with assets worth Rs2.75 billion. Adviser for Overseas Pakistanis Syed Zulfiqar Abbas Bukhari’s net assets are estimated over Rs2 billion.

His three properties in UAE include two villas in Jumeirah Golf Estates and Sienna Lakes, Jumeirah Golf Estates and an apartment at Park Towers, DIFC – all worth Dh20,688,000 (Rs942 million). He also has three cars in the UAE worth Dh400,000. In the US, he has property worth US$865,000 (Rs144 million) while he has Rs4 billion in various local and foreign bank accounts and retirement funds including $2.1 million in US.

Nadeem Babar – Special Assistant on Petroleum Division Nadeem Babar owns assets worth over Rs2.7 billion, including several properties in Pakistan and abroad and stakes in more than 30 local and foreign companies.

Zulfi Bukhari – Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Overseas Pakistanis, Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari, possesses over Rs2 billion. He has four gifted or inherited properties in Pakistan. His properties in the United Kingdom (a flat, furniture and paintings) are worth £5.28million (Rs1 billion). He owns four luxury vehicles in the UK, worth more than £578,000 (Rs121million) and one Toyota Land Cruiser in Pakistan. He also owns around Rs357million in banks and cash and around Rs482m in business capital.

Sardar Yar Muhammad Rind – PM’s Assistant on Ministries of Water Resources, Power and Petroleum in Balochistan, Sardar Rind, has assets worth Rs812 million total. Rind’s properties in UAE’s Spring Residential Villa in Dubai and apartment at International City Dubai are worth Rs75million.

Tania Aidrus – PM’s Assistant on Digital Pakistan Tania Aidrus owns four properties abroad — two in the US and one each in the UK and Singapore — with a value of Rs454million. The properties in Singapore and US are under mortgage. She has no property in Pakistan. Her bank accounts both in Pakistan and abroad are worth Rs25m. She owns a Toyota Fortuner vehicle.

Asim Saleem Bajwa – PM’s Assistant on Information & Broadcasting Lt Gen (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa owns property worth Rs158 million — two in Islamabad, two in Karachi, two in Lahore and one each in Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalpur.

Shahbaz Gill – PM’s Assistant on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill owns a total of 118 million including more than Rs2.6 million in local banks while more than Rs31 million in JPMorgan Chase in the US and a joint family account in the Busey Bank (US) that has Rs1.6 million.

Dr. Moeed Yusuf – PM’s Assistant on National Security and Strategic Policy Planning Dr. Moeed Yusuf has total assets worth Rs109million. He owns two cars worth Rs8.54m including an Audi A3 – both received as gifts.

Mirza Shahzad Akbar – Accountability Assistant Shahzad Akbar, along with his spouse, has properties worth Rs72 million.

Usman Dar – PM’s Assistant on Youth Affairs Usman Dar owns nearly Rs62 million including Rs35m cash in hand and Rs20m in bank and investment in shares.

Shehzad Arbab – Adviser to PM on Establishment owns assets worth Rs100 million, including houses, plots, and shops.

Nadeem Afzal Gondal - PM’s Assistant on Parliamentary Coordination Nadeem Gondal owns land worth more than Rs7.8 million and residential property worth over Rs9.4 million. His business capital is Rs2.5 million.

Ali Nawaz Awan – PM’s Assistant on Capital Development Authority Affair Ali Awan owns property in Pakistan worth Rs39 million. He has no properties abroad. His business capital amounts to Rs5.6million.

Dr. Zafar Mirza – PM’s Assistant on National Health Services and also Minister of State, Dr. Zafar Mirza owns assets worth Rs50.7 million, including a house worth Rs20 million and two plots worth Rs30 million.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has decided to include Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz in the assets beyond means probe against Captain (retd) Safdar, it emerged on Monday.

The Lahore division of the top anti-graft watchdog made the decision after it "found important leads in the case".

According to the authority, Maryam has been found to be the owner of the benami properties bought by Safdar, her husband.

Maryam, also the daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, has properties of hundreds of acres in her name in Raiwind and other areas of Punjab.

NAB's documents suggest that details have also been sought regarding Safdar's sources of earning.

Sources in the bureau said that its Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa division received reports about him in 2020, saying the cases were moved to Lahore as majority of his properties were found to be in the provincial capital.

Captain (retd) Safdar has been facing the probe for around two years over the possession of assets that are allegedly disproportionate to his known sources income, a crime under the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999.

The executive board of the anti-graft watchdog had given the nod for the probe in 2018 after a complaint was sent to it by a citizen.

According to the complainant, Safdar owned 300 kanals of land, a 30 kanals plot, a one kanal house, a flour mills and other properties in Mansehra.

NAB reveals asset details of Shehbaz Sharif

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has revealed the value of the unnamed assets of Pakistan Muslim League-N President Shehbaz Sharif.

Shahbaz Sharif, according to the NAB report, owns the assets valued Rs 7.58 billion. According to NAB documents, Shehbaz Sharif’s apparent assets are worth Rs 269.31 million. Shehbaz Sharif’s unnamed assets include properties, 3 companies, secret bank accounts, and shares.

According to the report, the assets of Shehbaz Sharif’s unnamed company Unitas and Good Nature are worth Rs 1.88 billion. Nisar Trading, an unnamed company of PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif, is worth Rs. 51.52 million. NAB has found evidence of Rs. 271.339 million in the secret bank accounts by Shahbaz Sharif. According to the document, Shahbaz Sharif’s shares are worth Rs 1.2 billion.

Let it be known that Lahore High Court will hear pre-arrest bail proceedings of opposition leader in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif in assets beyond means and money laundering cases on September 24.

Mian Mohammad Sharif, father of Nawaz Sharif and his six brothers founded Ittefaq foundry in 1939. The House of Ittefaq, the industrial conglomerate of Nawaz Sharif’s family is not unity anymore and 119 offspring’s siblings and spouses of the seven founding brothers are currently battling in courts for the division of the assets of the Ittefaq group.

The House of Ittefaq claims to have lost an industrial unit in East Pakistan, besides losing Ittefaq foundry to Bhutto’s nationalization. In the aftermath of nationalization Mian Mohammad Sharif tried luck in UAE where he set up a steel re-rolling mills. He is reported to have told his family that while leaving for UAE that he would not return till the mill was ready. The factory was therefore, completed on time but proved too taxing for aging Mian Sharif in an unfamiliar enviroment and therefore, he returned after operating it for about a year or two.

Lady luck smiled on the Sharif family when in late 1970′s General Zia ul Haq returned them Ittefaq foundry and Nawaz Sharif was appointed finance minister in the Punjab cabinet. By that time the House of Ittefaq comprised of following five enterprises:

Jawaid-Pervaiz Enterprise

Ittefaq Brothers (Pvt) Ltd

Khalid Siraj Industries (Pvt) Ltd

New industrial units were set up with electrifying speed in the 1980′s while Nawaz Sharif was the finance minister and later chief minister of Punjab.

Ittefaq Sugar Mills was set up in 1982, Brothers steel in 1983, Brother’s Textile Mills in 1986, Ittefaq Textile units in 2-3 in 1987, Khalid Siraj Textile Mills in 1988.

During Benazir’s first tenure, when Nawaz Sharif was the uncrowned King of the Punjab, the group started work on Brothers Sugar Mills and Ramzan Sugar Mills which turned out to be the last project set up under the banner of Ittefaq.

British court issues orders to unfreeze Shahbaz Sharif, son's bank accounts

In a major relief for PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif, a British court has ordered the unfreezing of the Opposition leader's bank accounts and those belonging to his son, Suleman Sharif Monday.

The decision was taken by the court after the UK's top anti-corruption body, the National Crime Agency (NCA) concluded there was no evidence of money laundering, fraud and criminal conduct against the two, according to evidence seen by The News exclusively.

The Westminster Magistrates Court’s Judge Nicholas Rimmer set aside the two accounts freezing orders (AFO) against Shahbaz Sharif and his son related to a December 2019 case filed by the NCA at the Pakistani government's request.

The UK's top anti-corruption agency filed a unilateral application before Judge Rimmer to declare that its two-year high-profile investigation in the jurisdictions of Pakistan, UK and Dubai found no evidence of money laundering and criminal conduct on part of the two Sharifs who were investigated.

Documents obtained by The News reveal that the bank accounts of Suleman Sharif were frozen and Shahbaz Sharif’s accounts were probed through a December 17, 2019 court order and both were subjected to high-profile criminal forensic investigation under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 (POCA), conducted by the NCA’s Investigations Command at the International Corruption Unit.

Their accounts were frozen after the Pakistan government asked the UK to “assist in the recovery of criminal assets to the state of Pakistan”, triggering a wide-ranging investigation.

NCA probes Shahbaz. Suleman's accounts After the Westminster Magistrates Court allowed the accounts to be freezed and issued a probe consent to the NCA on December 19, 2019, Suleman Sharif’s declared Barclays account, Shahbaz Sharif’s HBL UK and Barclays account were immediately probed, seized and monies frozen.

This correspondent has seen court evidence which shows that the NCA’s investigators sought consent from Shahbaz Sharif to have access to his closed Barclays account as well or else the account will be accessed through a production order. Shahbaz Sharif agreed to the consent on the advice of his lawyers.

Usually, anti-money laundering investigations go back only six years, but in this case, the NCA used its excessive powers and investigated Shahbaz Sharif and his son's transactions dating back to around 20 years. NCA's investigators started the probe from the first flat that Shahbaz Sharif bought in 2004 on Edgware Road when he was in exile and asked him to produce evidence of the clean origin of the money, including mortgage payments, sources of proceeds in his accounts, salaries and dividends, and full proceeds of the property purchase in the UK, bought during exile.

The NCA investigated Suleman Sharif’s Barclays account declared in Pakistan with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and looked into all transfers which were made from Pakistan after the State Bank of Pakistan’s approval. The NCA went through each receipt of transfers from the official money exchangers.

The court documents obtained by this correspondent from credible sources show that the NCA received a letter from the ARU on December 11, 2019, in which it levelled allegations of criminal conduct against Shahbaz Sharif and Suleman Sharif.

The government of Pakistan had requested the UK government to seize all assets and funds of Shahbaz Sharif and his family, and asked them to return the same to Pakistan and extradite Suleman Shehbaz with his family.

The Home Office was in the loop and a separate letter was sent to the Home Office requesting Suleman's extradition, as well as asking Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) ministry to probe Suleman.

Court papers show that two AFOs were issued by the Westminster Magistrates Court on December 17 for 12 months in case numbers 011902628734 and 011902628947.

A year later, on December 8, 2020, the NCA went to the court again, applying to extend both AFOs for six months, arguing that investigations were continuing in the UK, Dubai and Pakistan. According to court papers, Suleman Shehbaz agreed to the extension of the AFOs by the court on three applications filed by the NCA.

No evidence of money laundering or fraud On September 10, 2021, the NCA submitted a unilateral application to the court informing that its investigations had been completed and the NCA crime investigators had found no evidence of money-laundering, fraud or wrongdoings in any of the transactions made either from Pakistan to the UK or from the UK to Pakistan in Suleman and Shahbaz Sharif's accounts.

District Judge Nicholas Rimmer signed the final order setting aside the AFOs, releasing and returning the accounts and monies to Suleman Shehbaz and his father.

According to a chronological order of the sensitive investigation - kept under tight wraps by the Sharifs, the NCA and the Pakistan government - a senior director of the NCA’s International Corruption Unit met Shehzad Saleem, Director General of NAB Lahore, in London on December 9, 2019 to discuss the formal investigation against Shahbaz and Suleman Sharif.

According to court papers, Shehzad Saleem explained to the NCA that Shehbaz Sharif’s wealth began to accumulate when he and his brother Nawaz Sharif gained prominence in the 1980s. The implication being that they were receiving bribes and other kickbacks because of their influential position.

The NAB Lahore official told the NCA official during their Central London meeting that Sharifs’ used the hawala system to transfer monies to make them clean and to legalise such transactions. He told the NCA that NAB’s investigation had identified a large number of remittances to bank accounts of the family, allegedly from Pakistanis living abroad.

It is therefore the NAB’s case, he told the NCA, and that the remittances are the laundering of illicit funds by, or on behalf of, Shahbaz Sharif and family, according to court papers.

The ARU's letter This correspondent has reviewed the letter of December 11, 2019 from the ARU to the NCA explaining why Shahbaz and Suleman Sharif should be investigated and what action should be taken. The ARU told the NCA that Shehbaz was wanted in Pakistan, under investigation, on bail, and a person of interest for misuse of authority during his tenure as chief minister Punjab, namely in his involvement in the Ashiana Housing scheme case and Hamza Sugar Mills case.

The Assets Recovery Unit (ARU) said in the same letter that Suleman was the “principal accused and beneficiary of the fake international remittances and money laundering through front and paper companies”. The Pakistani government's letter to the UK’s anti-corruption agency alleged that its investigation revealed that Shahbaz Sharif and Suleman “patronised a local network of front companies in the name of their low paid employees to launder their proceeds of corruption to show as legitimate money” and that both had “used informal money transfers (hawala) to shift and conceal their money abroad”.

The Pakistan government further told the NCA that the Panamagate investigations had “already culminated in sentences to Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz Sharif and others from the accountability court and these cases are presently pending with the Islamabad High Court in the appellate's jurisdiction.

It mentioned that investigations by NAB are presently underway for “corruption and organised money laundering” in relation to various members of the Sharif family, including Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Hamza Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar, Nusrat Shahbaz, Suleman Sharif and mainly family members of Shahbaz Sharif for “money laundering “through companies owned by Shahbaz’s family members.

This correspondent has seen the full file which the NCA placed before the Westminster Magistrates Court in order to get the freezing orders (AFOs) issued against Shahbaz Sharif and Suleman. The NCA bundle went into detail to describe Shahbaz and his son as being allegedly involved in criminal conduct through misuse of authority and associated money laundering.

Attached in the bundle was also an article by David Rose for the Daily Mail which had been published on July 13, 2019 in which the paper alleged that Shahbaz had stolen the UK government funds.

The article carried the same allegations of money laundering that the ARU later on submitted before the NCA, asking the UK to rely on the article for its investigations.

The NCA gained AFOs and probe consent order for violations contrary to sections 327, 328 and 329 of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, involving criminal offending contrary to conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office and conspiracy to cheat the public revenue; concealing criminal property; acquisition of criminal property; use and possessions of criminal property; and fraud by false representation and fraud by abuse of position.

No case for 'recoverable property', says NCA The NCA lawyers, requesting freezing orders for 12 months, added: "This will ultimately allow us to prove or disprove if these funds in whole or part, constitute recoverable property in that they are derived from criminal conduct or intended for use in unlawful conduct."

The NCA application, quoting the allegations made by the ARU, said that it needed 12 months because it will conduct enquiries internationally.

Credible legal sources here shared that the grounds of suspicion on which the NCA filed its application in the Westminster Magistrates Court to secure freezing orders were not proven as the investigations in multiple jurisdictions couldn’t establish evidence to prove money-laundering and criminal conduct.

That is the sole reason, according to sources, why the NCA gave it in writing to the Westminster Magistrates Court that its investigations had established that there was no case for the “recoverable property”, hence the unfreezing of assets and closure of the case file.

Reports of Shahbaz being acquirred incorrect, says Shahzad Akbar Meanwhile, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Accountability Shahzad Akbar said that reports of Shahbaz Sharif being acquitted by the British court were incorrect, clarifying that neither had the ARU nor NAB requested the UK government to initiate a probe against the PML-N leader.

He said the inquiry had been initiated over a "suspicious transaction" that a bank had reported to the NCA, adding that these consisted of certain funds transferred by Suleman Shahbaz from Pakistan to the UK in 2019.

"[These transactions] were declared as a suspicious transaction by the UK authorities and the NCA secured an asset freezing order(AFO) from the court against these funds," he tweeted. "However, recently the NCA decided to stop investigating these funds and therefore agreed for the release of these funds through the court.

"It is clarified that such a release order is not an acknowledgement that funds are from a legitimate source," he added. The prime minister'a aide said that Shahbaz and Suleman have not been acquitted since they had not been tried to begin with.

"The funds were frozen by the NCA and the NCA has decided to not investigate these funds anymore," he added. "Suleman Shahbaz remains a fugitive in a money laundering case against him and his father before the AC Lahore," he added.

PMLN Secretary Information Marriyum Aurangzeb said the UK court decision has unequivocally exonerated Shehbaz Sharif and his family of all malicious and vexatious claims of corruption and money laundering.

Responding to Shahzad Akbar’s tweet, she said the NCA UK conducted a 21-month global investigation spanning 20 years whilst overcoming unprecedented jurisdictional challenges.

She said never in the history of Pakistan has a public office holder ever been subjected to global scrutiny and multi-jurisdictional probing as Shahbaz Sharif had been.

Marriyum said the government's false corruption narrative was exposed, adding that it was telling a hundred more lies to cover up thousands that it had already told.

She said the government will fall on the weight of its own deceit and lies.

The CM directed to prepare working papers for solutions to farmers' problems along with steps for the local manufacturing of vaccine for foot and mouth disease. Adhoc recruitment has been decided in principle to fulfil the shortage of essential human resource in an agriculture department and the CM directed timely completion of desilting. The scope of Kisan Card for subsidy for agri-inputs will be extended to the whole of the province, concluded the CM.

According to a document released by the NAB, Shahbaz Sharif bought four flats worth more than one million pounds in the UK during his exile.

As per NAB, PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif took loans from various businessmen, Barclays Bank, Asma Dar, and others.

NAB revealed that a flat was bought in London in 2005 by Shahbaz Sharif worth more than 235,000 pounds.

For the flat, 75,000 pounds was borrowed from a businessman and more than 0.1 million pounds from Barclays Bank.

The Lahore division of the top anti-graft watchdog made the decision after it "found important leads in the case".

According to the authority, Maryam has been found to be the owner of the benami properties bought by Safdar, her husband.

Maryam, also the daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, has properties of hundreds of acres in her name in Raiwind and other areas of Punjab.
