Hi! I was wondering (silly question)... does Nadeem Naaman's beard historically make sense for Raoul? I vaguely remember a time in 19th century when men were on for elegant beards but I can't recall what part of the 19th century was and if it was an all-European fashion trend. Anyway, he looks great.
Nadim Naaman has aged like the finest of wines. It's SO weird to see photos of baby-Nadim in his first West End run now. It's not just the current Raoul beard adding to the look, but the whole attitude and features.
Would beard for Raoul be historicall accurate or plausible? Definitely. And not a silly question at all. It's easier to find depictions of elder men with beard in 1870-1890s Europe, but it was really worn by most ages and most layers of society. Same with the US. Some super random examples:

Middle: Unidentified man, c. 1880, Northampton USA
Right: Self portrait, Hans Heyerdahl, 1890
Compare to Nadim Naaman's current Raoul look in Greece:

The Norwegians Land in Iceland, Year 872 (1877), by Oscar Wergeland.
The landnám (“land-taking”) in Iceland began in the year 874, when Ingólfr Arnarson founded Reykjavík with his wife and brother.  He was the first person to sail to Iceland with the specific intention of settling the land, but archaeological finds suggest that others may have settled there before him.
Iceland was uninhabited except for a few Celtic monks, who had sailed there to find solitude.  According to Ari Þorgilsson, they left because they did not want to live among the Norse pagans.
The landnám continued until around the year 930, with the establishment of the Alþingi, Iceland's national parliament. However, settlers continued to arrive throughout the 10th century.
Iceland's settlers were predominantly Norse, with a number of Celts (mostly women) among them.  Small-scale chieftains also travelled to Iceland, where they became goðar, or priest-chieftains.  Some of them, according to medieval Icelandic sources, may have left Norway because they had difficulties with the centralization of royal power.

Jacobine Camilla Collett (née Wergeland; 23 January 1813 – 6 March 1895) was a Norwegian writer, often referred to as the first Norwegian feminist. She was also the younger sister of Norwegian poet Henrik Wergeland, and is recognized as being one of the first contributors to realism in Norwegian literature. Her younger brother was Major General Joseph Frantz Oscar Wergeland. She became an honorary member of the Norwegian Association for Women's Rights when the association was founded in 1884.

Gratulerer med dagen, Norge! 🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴 Happy 17 May, happy constitution day, happy National day, Norway! 👇 👇 👉 "Scream" by Edvard Munch may be the most known artwork in Norway, but “Eidsvoll 1814” by Oscar Wergeland from 1885 (above) is by far the most important one. It represents the  historic meeting of the 112 Constitution Committee members spring 1814, who met in Eidsvoll in Norway to agree on the first Norwegian Constitution. The meeting marked the foundation of the Norwegian parlament (=Stortinget), and put ground for the modern democracy, starting Norway’s journey to its independence from the union with Sweden that finally happened in 1905. 🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴 This majestic painting is undoubtedly considered one of if not the most important painting in Norway.. It was made for and is currently located in the center of the main parlament hall in Stortinget in Norway. The year 1814 was a major year in the Norwegian history, the year when Norway took its first steps towards independence from its Scandinavian neighbours, and the year when Norwegian constitution was written and agreed on May 17, 1814. 🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴 Photo crefit @the_art_trotter #oscarwergeland #stortinget #eidsvoll1814 #norwegianart #norskkunst  #norway #norge #nordics #norwegianartist #oslo #arthistory #art #kunst #konst #painting #arttrotter#followme #arthistory #fineart #instaart #artlover #artnet #artoftheday #instaartdaily #artwatchers_united #luxury #искусство #художник #норвегия #luxurytravel #thearttrotter #fineart (at Oslo, Norway) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxjWOjpA7x5/?igshid=1045egmldg05v
