LISTENING TO THE SAME DRUMMERS DIFFERENTLY AT SMALL’S JAZZ CLUB COUCH TOUR
ARI HOENIG with Nitai Hershkovits and Matt Penman, 12 DECEMBER 2022

I am particularly fond of these two idiosyncratic and very different drummers, ARI HOENIG all sorts of tics, multi-rhythms, and melodies and BILLY MINTZ almost Zen like in his subtlety and quiet. Both write a fine tune too. So they occupy a different part of the soundscape from Johnathan Blake, Al Foster, or Billy Drummond, say, but, as I say, absolutely fascinating. But here was Hoenig with a different trio, an iteration of an earlier one more standards based and Mintz, previously heard only with trios with pianists Alan Broadbent or Roberta Piket to whom he is married.
Ear opening which is why this music always delights.
I have regularly looked forward to HOENIG with Gadi Lehavi and Ben Tiberio working through a book centered around the leader’s compostions and thought that’s who I’d see. Hoenig and Nitai Hershkovits recorded an album with Or Beraket in 2019 (which has some of the originals he plays with Lehavi and Tiberio too and to be fair) that includes a typically fractalized All The Things You Are (which I heard Monday), Prelude to a Kiss, All of You, In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning. And, some of those (not the Ellington) were part of this set, though Let’s Cool One and Take the Coltrane were there. That is, by fractalized, I mean, I heard snatches of things that were familiar, but I couldn’t quite place (too rarely can I). Not quite as frantic as when Hoenig is worth Jean-Michel Pilc and Francois Moutin or for that matter when he’s with Lehavi/Tiberio, but still a level of abstraction that nonetheless was grounded in the Great American Song Book. I’d heard Hershkovits before but he rises in my estimation for his association with this favored drummer who has smart opinions about tunes and leads from that basis.
MINTZ put his composer/arranger chops on full display and was more forceful in pushing around this band. For starters Piket just has a bigger, brasher piano sound than the elegant Broadbent and she was by turns boppish, modal, hard boppish, and building on a riff but also gentle then florid in the ballad. The opening tune was surprising out there as the horns conversed and soloed rather freely at the same time. Scott Robinson, often subtle with a wonderful dry tone, was even a bit squawky and certainly adventurous. Joe Mangarelli was more contained but on point. I know, because Piket sang it, one tune was Mintz’s Looking Down on the Stars, but I have to imagine they were reading his charts and the range was quite striking. He was just as subtle as always but more sticks and just bigger.
I sat down expecting very different shows than what I got, but what I got was wonderful, including knowing more sides to some favorite players.

Nitai Hershkovitsのトリオによる最新アルバムです。誤解を恐れずに言えば、結構変な作品です。基本的にはピアノ・トリオにシンセの組み合わせなのですが、まず旋律がスカッとしない。ゴニョゴニョしている。カタルシスがない。静かに蠢いている感。予想通りに動かない。決してダナミックな演奏をしない。うちうちへと入っていく感じ。幽玄といえばいえない事もない、妙な非日常感。最初さっぱりわからなかったけど、これがしたかったのかと思えば氷解。これは面白い。
