Night Light Species Headcanon
Since, as I've mentioned in previous posts, I feel like the Nine Realms show gets way more hate then it actually deserves and because I found the main characters dragons to be pretty interesting, I thought I'd provide some headcanons on their species that I'd come up with. Starting with the most obvious choice-The Night Lights.
Most modern Night Lights like Thunder ARE the descendants of Toothless's children but after thousands of years, their genetics have become distinct enough that they're able to breed within their own species without worrying about inbreeding. Originally, if they needed mates, they'd find them among the Light Fury species.
That being said, the Night Lights still have a violently small population in comparison to most other dragons. Knowing their numbers are few, Night Lights tend to gather into herds or groups that are led by a pair of Alphas similar to Toohless and The Light Fury once leading the Hidden world. Thunder being all alone is actually very unusual as most Night Lights are very social and stay together. It's also why he was able to so easily bond with Tom.
Like a zebra, the black and white patterns on a Night Light's body is unique to it. No two have the exact same pattern and it's easy to tell which dragon is which by their spots.
When facing off against larger dragons, the Night Light pack uses their numbers and their unique coloring to their advantage. They fly together at high speeds so that their black and white parts start to blur together and confuse enemy dragons on where to attack.
Night Light dragons aren't just born through Night Furies and Light fries having children or through two Night Lights breeding. When a Night Light breeds with a Light Fury, any dragons that aren't pure white are considered as Night Lights and are welcomed into the pack.
Night Lights and Skrills are natural enemies because the Skrill often attack their groups until the Night Lights retaliate with their electrical abilities and the Skrill can absorb their electricity into their bodies. Skrill attacks are a serious concern for Night Lights as they wear down their already small population.

This is by far the most unfaithful 'redesign' I've done so far. But that being said, I don't call myself a butcher for no reason.
I don't enjoy how TNR brings back dragons from the original series, as it's set far, far into the future the fact that those species still exist and are practically unchanged is well, weird to me. The fact that NIGHTLIGHTS still exist is also extremely odd to me, as they are a hybrid species they should be long gone due to the fact that Nightfuries have been long extinct (Toothless is an outlier).
This redesign is mainly just me having fun tbh. That's what most of my redesigns are. it's less what the og could've done better and more what I would find more interesting as a concept. There's quite a few tidal class dragons in the HTTYD franchise, yet there's not really any that are a 'main rider dragon.' This is one part appreciating Tidal class dragons and one part an ode to the book series.

Starting off the new year with I think the most background heavy piece I've ever made!
I think Rainwings and Nightwings would celebrate their traditional holidays together after the events of The brightest night. So this drawing is meant to show their cultures kind of blending together during a very joyful time.
I remember talking about this concept with someone on tumblr a year ago but when I went back through my posts I couldn't for the life of me find it - so if your reading this, I remember you and this drawing stems from that conversation so thank you!

"One day you will lay in the sun and things won't feel so bad."
Is there a name for 'feel like you're wasting your summer but you know you're really not?' Because I've got a bad case of that.
