The pandemic was a weird time. During that purgatory, I was "sand"wiched between my idols growing up and esteemed seniors in the industry. One of life's mysteries has led me to play colouring book with my Niezam to support my MonsterVerse brethren Drew Edward Johnson in DUNE: The Official Movie Graphic Novel. Adapted to comic format by Lilah Sturges and with Bill Sienkiewicz on the cover, it is indeed quite a reality to experience. You will find my illustration interpreting Paul’s “Ascent” (third/bottom image) in the book.

Books read in 2022 #102 - “Dune: The Official Movie Graphic Novel” by Lilah Sturges, Drew Johnson, & Zid Niezam
I’ve been looking forward to this adaptation since I first heard about the project and it didn’t disappoint.
The script does an excellent job of condensing the complexities of the movie while keeping the narrative flowing (the addition of a couple of nods to the original book that weren’t in the movie is a nice touch.)
The art work captures the look and feel of the movie’s aesthetic well and the character likenesses are all on model. The action is also well staged and paced.
It’s difficult to translate the majesty of this movie onto the printed page and the colorist understandably follows a similar pallet in setting the scenes. Unfortunately at times the color is applied too heavily and almost obscures some of the action, it’s especially noticeable on one double page spread illustrating one of the movie’s most iconic moments.
Overall this is one of the better comics adaptations and is a worthwhile companion to the movie.
