Look, I'm a fan of Pibby, and I'm really looking forward to it in the hopes that it might actually be good.
But it's really really rude and really really out of touch to not only believe that HBO Max's removal of so many cartoons (not just from HBO Max, but all official record of it from the internet) is a marketing strategy to promote Pibby.
Please understand that not a single person who worked on any of these shows were told ahead of time that their creations would be scrubbed from existence, they found out through the internet like the rest of us. They were not afforded any courtesy whatsoever, and now things they've spent years and years to create are being erased with no regard for their time, effort, or basic humanity. Right now, big pieces of their projects run the risk of, if they haven't already become, lost media with a very low likelihood of ever being seen again. That's not a cool thing like seeing an old cartoon bumper discovered after two decades of searching - these are things these creators poured so much work, time, and money into that's being erased right in front of them, and they can barely do anything about it.
Some of these shows likely have been quietly cancelled for years, but their creators aren't even legally allowed to tell the waiting public that their shows would never have been continued anyway. Many of these shows weren't afforded a physical DVD release no matter how much they pleaded to their higher-ups.
This is a destruction of art and of hundreds of people's years, sometimes decades of work. Please do not callously tote a conspiracy theory that this is marketing for someone else's creation at everyone else's expense. Please understand this this is unequivocally a tragedy.

The Vicious Cycle of the Animation Industry
Look, I’m not too confident in myself to cover all the crap going down with HBOMax or the WB Discovery debacle outside of regurgitating what people better versed in the industry than me have covered. A glance at Twitter will speak volumes alone.
What I do intend to discuss is the common theme of animation always getting the shaft either because it’s too costly compared to whatever live action show they pump out (because VFX may as well be paid in pennies by this point) or because they’re deemed acceptable losses by the wider public.
Much as animation over all has garnered a sizable and vocal following, too many executives are high up to care about how a series is very beloved or hated. What they care is how much its raking it for them and what they should be pushing above all else.
Thus Teen Titans Go can be the most loathe show by animation and DC geeks alike but still chug along if the right amount of kids throw money at it (with their parent’s permission). Whereas a show that has thought put into its story, characters and artstyle will be meddled with to fit the mold of TTG or be cast aside if it doesn’t do gangbusters.
Of course, biased marketing departments don’t help. There’s no telling how well a more ambitious cartoon might’ve done if it had been given half the attention other shows settling for the cheap laughs had. Commercials, billboard, even friggin, YouTube ads (for all their infuriating nature) can make or break a show’s success. Yet some seem to get by in spite of the network being ambivalent towards the title.
You can’t even claim that the internet is hard to work with when Social Media managers exist for a reason. If every cartoon got its fair shake at potential success but failed due to a considerable lack of interest on the audience’s part, maybe a cancellation wouldn’t feel as gutting. It’d still hurt but in a, “Dem’s the brakes, kiddo,” sort of way.
As is, The Legend of Korra practically had Nick’s marketing in a tizzy compared to Spongebob when they could’ve tried... something. Where was all that energy they put into greenlighting three seasons at once before Book 2? Why move it to their website and not a service like Netflix where serialized stories (at the time) were thriving?
Of course, it’s hard to deny how the perception of animation from adults overall are very likely shared with the producers who oversee these cartoons. Despite the medium being profitable to not let go of full stop, too much animation with no so insignificant follows get the axe likely because the mainstream perception of animation being a lesser media seeps into the inmates running the asylum.
1.Many adults see cartoons and animation overall as for kids.
2. The public overall internalizes this idea of it being a lesser medium despite some productions crunching their staff big time.
3. Those of the public go on to work for companies like WB and/or Disney where they may help oversee animation production.
4. The aforementioned attitudes lead to animation being seen as expendable in lew of any money problems (often of their own doings).
I mean... you know it’s bad when Disney granted The Owl House something when it came to shortening Season 3 when it could’ve just had King’s Tide be the end of it. Not to give too much credit but I’d take a shorter season for a show getting the boot to end. At the very least they can have the creators and their team make their cases why they shouldn’t just be written off.
So... what now? It’s easy to say “support indie creators” when forgetting how there can be a lot of uncertainty in a lot of unknown media. It’s not just corporations feeding into the “nothing’s original” phenomenon suffice to say. What I can say is that a “NewDeal4Animation” trends for a reason.
Those working in this industry need to unionize and make it clear as goddamn crystal that they are not okay with how things are as of now. If they’re employed to work on a project for a company, they need to be valued and not be neglected or abused. And we fans can help by stepping up whether or not this might be trending.
This is a worker’s rights issue by any other name and needs solving ASA-Now!

Animators: A day in the life.
Animators in the morning remembering thier deadline:
Tumblr media
Animators drawing billions of frames (imagine drawing thousands of pictures a day) on a few month deadline:
Tumblr media
Animators after the first episode is finally done:
Tumblr media
Animators realizing that they still have six more episodes to animate the next morning and that thier boss and thier friends will harass, talk down to them or lie about them online if they speak up about thier constant mistreatment in the workplace:
Tumblr media
In summary:
Animators, lineartists, colorists, shading artists, background artists, etc are not art machines, they deserve for thier mental and physical health to be prioritized like everyone else.
When they speak up, please dont automatically deny thier claims just because some were treated well, because chances are, many were not treated well within said company/studio at all since most end up creating millions of frames in only the span of a few months. Being constantly stressed is not normal, being overworked is not normal, not being able to speak up about workplace abuse without being attacked online or denied help by other staff is not normal.

Who else would pay a metric fuckton of money on a charity stream to see Pendleton Ward DM a oneshot or mini campaign for Alex Hirsch, Matt Braly, Dana Terrace, Rebecca Sugar, Ian Jones-Quartey, and Owen Dennis.

Hey, so, about the whole HBO MAX/DISCOVERY thing - I just checked my YouTube library, and it looks like you can still support a lot of the shows officially if you want to! I’ve still got Mao Mao and Infinity Train there, and I can even buy seasons that were previously only available on HBO MAX! They’re available for purchase from the YouTube library, and I think the iTunes Store too? You don’t have to subscribe to anything - there’s a one-time purchase for each season of each show.
Piracy is of course always an option, and I fully support it! Piracy is an important tool for media preservation and accessibility! But the fact that you can still support and watch these shows officially gives me hope.
Stay mad. Keep pushing. Support if you can, because I think that’s gonna be part of this fight. If you’re an animator, or someone who works on these shows, talk to a lawyer. See if we can’t make this a legal battle, too. Write letters to Warner Bros. Physical letters, you send in the mail, in an envelope - or even just a postcard or something, I don’t know, but PAPER. Flood their mailboxes. Demand they treat their creators better.
This is an important moment. The animation industry (and indeed, the entertainment industry as a whole) has needed better worker’s rights for a very, VERY long time, and I think this is a big enough deal to cause real, systemic change. An abrupt move like the one Warner Brothers just made just flat-out shouldn’t be legal. Peoples jobs are at stake, their hard work disrespected, their creations left in limbo. This should be cause for outrage, because it is genuinely outrageous. I think this is a fight we can win.

Don't get invested in TV shows because if it doesn't last long enough for its conclusion to get absolutely mangled, it'll get cancelled before it even gets one.

Normally I would stay out of this but screw it.
If you’re really that petty enough to abandon an entire movement that is crucial to giving animators fair compensation/better conditions for their work over something that an INDIVIDUAL did 3 YEARS AGO, then you honest to god need to get your priorities in order.
