how were you taught to remember the order of north-east-south-west as a kid, and where are you from? I’m Australian, and I learnt “never eat soggy weetbix”

It's so funny that I learnt the cardinal directions using the "never eat soggy weetbix" mnemonic because when I have weetbix I drown them in milk, microwave them until they're very soft and then stir it around until I have wheat sludge.

It seems I’ve been summoned to explain Australian lore yet again :o. This is Weetbix:
Tumblr media
As you can tell by the slogan, it’s very much an Aussie thing lol. It’s practically like, cereal pounded together into a rectangle? And it’s said you have to eat it very quickly or the texture goes to @€%# !! Hence the mnemonic: Never eat soggy weetbix~. I’ve never had it tho bc my dad hates it. But it’s the partner to another classic Aussie childhood drink made by the same company: Up&Go! (I miss it so much I haven’t had it in years but I still remember the distinctive taste of the vanilla ice flavour, so milky sweet 🥺) And on the topic of Australian foods, it’s also why I can’t take the name Milo seriously because ALL I can think about is the chocolate malted powder that goes with milk smh
Anyway hiii Jay I hope you know ur reblogs helped me score 2 years worth of ad-free tumblr :3. Hope ur doing alright! <3
OH ITS LIKE THE I had to look this up but those big shredded wheat things they don't really sell anymore. Like mini wheats but big and unfrosted
Tumblr media
(mini wheats without the terrifying faces they have now for reference)
I get that tho sjxkd mini-wheats are the same deal if you don't eat them fast they're soggy and squishy and the worst sensory experience ever
Love learning abt food from other places it's always fun ✨✨
Yoo 2 years hot damn you're winning sjxk and you're welcome lol
And I am certainly doing!! The amount of packages suddenly arriving around the same time has been a great boost to my mood sjxkd and more are on the way which says a lot about my spending habits,,
Hope you're doin alright too mwah thanks for dropping in my askbox :D

I’m curious about something: what is the mnemonic device you use to help you remember the directions on a compass?
Because I can’t imagine anyone saying anything other than Never Eat Soggy Weetbix but I realise that other countries must have their own version of it.

@softboybarzal -> makes me laugh, there’s no other way to describe it, always sending me posts on australia and they make me laugh everytime. over the weekend i was send a post on how i remember the compass directions ‘never eat soggy weetbix’ and no joke i literally was having weetbix for breakfast. 😂 or she’s attacking me with nolan posts, which i never complain about, honestly a gem, so incredibly lovely and kind and so funny!
@jamiedrysdales -> well i sent her a voice memo today and she made my day telling me she liked my accent hah, but my criminal minds buddy. so glad we started talking that day about criminal minds and we are so close now. she’s an talented writer and i look forward to all her pieces and posts she makes!! we could literally have a conversation about anything and everything and not get bored. she’s there to listen to me ranting about something that happened or upset me even if it’s something super dumb over what happened in my day. if you’re not friends with ari, you’re missing out and if you have gathered i love her lots.
@honeybearbarzal -> i don’t believe we’ve spoken apart from asks here and there, which i totally should do more often but people scare me lol. but her account is lovely and she seems lovely and another talented writer and always love reading her blurbs and writing like hello whenever she walks about nolan or jake!!
send me a url and i’ll tell you my thoughts/opinion.

My biggest shame is that whenever someone says Western or Eastern Europe I have to go 'never eat soggy weetbix' while picturing a map of Europe before I know where they're talking about

hello ana i just wanted to stop by and say that i very much enjoyed your lil theory about hemmo's new tattoo being for aus due to the western direction symbolism! i also wanted to ask if in your country, you were taught like a catch phrase thing to help you remember the order of directions on a compass? because in Australia we learn it as Never Eat Soggy Weetbix (which is a popular cereal... why yes we are very #cultured thank you haha)
Kara 💜 I have a few more tat thoughts (like how Michael has 2 tats referencing the sun, how it all ties to their calm symbols etc) but i'll keep them to myself for a while longer. 😅 As for the corners of the world, I don't think we had one? I remember that I was doing clockwise motions when talking about them as a kid, but I think it's easier for us to remember sever, istok, zapad and jug in Macedonian because we lie smack dab in the center of the map, we can easily orient ourselves. I know that Americans use one where the Americas are in the middle but to me it messes with the timezones. Dunno what it's like in Australia tho. :))
