Today is #NavajoCodeTalkersDay. It is a day to remember the once top-secret group, the Navajo Code Talkers. In turn, we also celebrate all #IndigenousLanguages.

Navajo Code Talkers Day was established by a proclamation made by President Ronald Reagan in 1982.

The heart of a nation reborn. ⠀ ⠀ Kiamana is a proud member of the Navajo Tribe and resides in Shonto, Arizona. When we first saw him we noticed that the newspaper wasn’t in English, it was in a language unknown to us, and we wanted to learn more. ⠀ ⠀ Historically the Navajo language was purely verbal, with no known written language. When colonizers came to Navajo Nation, the tribe members were forced to learn English and assimilate to White culture. The government even went as far as making it illegal to publicly speak in any Native American language. ⠀ ⠀ In the 1940s when WWII broke out, everything changed. The US government used bilingual Navajo speakers specially recruited to serve in communications. This required that they make a written version of Navajo to used. No one outside of the government knew that a written version of Navajo was created until the 1980s when documents became public. ⠀ ⠀ In 1968 the Bilingual Education Act was passed, and allowed schools to teach/be taught in different languages, including Navajo. When it became legal to speak and teach the Navajo language, they were faced with a new problem: not many people knew how to read in Navajo. However, due to revitalization and the resilient nature of the Navajo people many can now again read and speak their ancestral language.
