Today In History An impresario in the broadest and most creative sense of the word, Quincy Jones’ career has encompassed the roles of composer, record producer, artist, film producer, arranger, conductor, instrumentalist, television producer, record company executive, magazine founder and multi-media entrepreneur. As a master inventor of musical hybrids, he has shuffled pop, soul, hip-hop, jazz, classical, African and Brazilian music into many dazzling fusions, traversing virtually every medium, including records, live performance, movies and television. Quincy Jones was born on March 14, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, and brought up in Seattle, Washington. His musical studies at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, afforded him the opportunity to tour with Lionel Hampton’s band as a trumpeter, arranger and sometime-pianist. He moved to New York in 1951, where his reputation as an arranger grew. By the mid-1950s, he was arranging and recording for such diverse artists as Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Dinah Washington. Celebrating more than fifty years performing and being involved in music, Jones’ creative magic has spanned over six decades, beginning with the music of the post-swing era and continuing through today’s high-technology, international multi-media hybrids. Reposted from @musicsermon 45 years ago [October 24, 1978] The Wiz, Sydney Lumet's Berry Gordy-produced vision for the reimagined version of The Wizard of Oz - now a massive cult classic - opened in theaters... and flopped at the box office.

Gordy had pitched Universal pictures so heavily on the adaptation of the immensely successful Broadway musical that the studio didn't set a budget, and the movie only earned 13M in initial release against 24M in costs. (About 61M box office against an appx 110M budget by today's numbers)

A not small portion of that budget can be seen in the infamous Emerald City sequence, shot at the (then still newish and shiny) World Trade Center

400 dancers and models (including supermodel Iman and the legendary Bethann Hardison).

1200 costumes - 3 changes each.

Designs by Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Mary McFadden, Ralph Lauren, Halston, Norma Kamali, furriers Alixandre and Ben Kahn and others.

1 gold piano-playing Quincy Jones (The Wiz was the beginning of Q and Michael's relationship).

When you wanna talk about something being ahead of its time, we can pull this scene. Lumet wanted the segment to be all about “status and style," Black opulence before we were using the phrase.

It was the most expensive shoot ever at WTC.

O elenco do filme conta com a cantora Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Halle Bailey, Aunjanue Ellis e os cantores H.E.R. e Jon Batiste. A direção fica com Blitz the Ambassador e a equipe de produtores conta com Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders e Quincy Jones.

Tanto o musical da Broadway como o filme são baseados no livro homônimo de Alice Walker, onde a escritora conta a história de dificuldades de famílias afro-americanas na Geórgia durante o século XX. A versão musical estreou em 2005 e foi indicada a 11 prêmios Tony.

Vale ressaltar que A Cor Púrpura já tinha virado filme em 1985, com direção de Spielberg.

Nos EUA, o filme estreia no dia 25 de dezembro, no Brasil a produção ainda não tem data de estreia.
