May 8, Happy Birthday to Sir David Attenborough... turning 97 today ! Congratulations to British author, explorer & zoologist/biologist Sir David Attenborough on his 97th birthday. Last year he was so kind autographing a few 1962 photographs showing him wearing his Rolex Explorer 1016 wrist watch. It is my absolute pleasure to invite you to my next solo exhibition titled UNCONSCIOUS at @jdmalatgallery NEW YORK. It will take place from September 9 trough October 1st at 507 W 27th Street in Chelsea. I developed a painting technique trough an active meditation that’s practiced in front of the canvas with the brush in my hands. The objective is of course to make a painting using only my unconscious brain. In this meditation I relax myself actively, emptying all ideas related to painting and relying entirely on the idea that my unconscious is capable of making the painting. Excluding conscious decisions what is left are organic forms. It is not me, Santiago Parra the individual that has come to be trough 36 years in this planet but rather it is the organ that constitutes my brain that makes the painting. More cameraless exposures of fireflies. A few months ago, we were fortunate to spend time together instead of remotely. We capped it off by returning to one of our early collaborative projects, started in the mid-90's. A firefly was gently collected and taken into a darkroom. 'Blinky' was placed into a cigar box that had a piece of 4x5 sheet film inside. It did its thing by pulsing bioluminescent light directly onto the film emulsion. You can even see its legs. Basically a photogram; no lens was used. When we felt it did enough, the film was removed.
