On this day, 16 February 1936, elections were held in Republican Spain and the left-wing Popular Front emerged victorious. But despite the Republic having been in place for five years, Morocco was still not freed from colonial domination. The Republic would eventually pay for this, when the nationalists made use of Moorish troops to defeat them in the civil war. Trinidadian communist George Padmore wrote at the time in response to left-wingers internationally decrying Moroccan soldiers often in racist terms: "It is not the politically backward Moors who should be blamed for being used by the forces of reaction against the Spanish workers and peasants, but the leaders of the Popular Front, who, in attempting to continue the policy of Spanish Imperialism, made it possible for Franco to exploit the natives in the service of Fascism… "Had the Popular Front Government, immediately it assumed office, issued decrees granting the colonial peoples economic and political reforms as a gesture towards self-government and appealed for their support against France, it would have been assured… For the Moors have no particular ideological interest in Fascism. They, like most colonial peoples, are not concerned with the conflicting political conflicts going on in Europe. To them all whites are alike – a feeling which can hardly be otherwise when Labour and Popular Front Governments oppress and exploit them in the same way as Tory and other reactionary Capitalists… Not until the European workers’ movements, especially in countries with great empires like Britain and France show more solidarity in deeds and not words will this distrust and suspicion be removed." Papa Bois [Trinidadian folklore]
The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is home to several large forests and deep woods. According to local folktales, an enigmatic being dwells in these woodlands and protects the beasts that live there. He is called Papa Bois (pronounced Papa Bow-ah), and he is the guardian of the forests.
He has a human-like body, although it is entirely covered with fur (compared with the fur of a donkey) and he is shorter than regular humans. A pair of horns adorn his head.
Papa Bois has a hoof for his left foot, but despite that he can run incredibly fast. If you see him, you must never stare at his hoof, for it is considered incredibly rude.
He sometimes transforms into a deer to lure hunters into the heart of the forest. He then appears before them in his true form to scare them and give them a warning, before disappearing. Generally speaking, you don’t need to be afraid when encountering Papa Bois.
Source: “Information about Local Folk Characters” from The Heritage Library, I did not find the author but the text is archived here.  https://chloemaraj68104874.wordpress.com/home-3/page-1/men-in-folklore/men-is-folklore-history/ None of those are particularly good sources, but the story was ‘confirmed’ to me by a native Trinidadian. Still, I hope to back it up with a written source one of these days. (image source: Fabien Kong)

TRINIDAD: IËRE, LAND OF THE HUMMING BIRD By Allister Macmillan Those who eat the cascadura will, the native legend says, Wheresoever they may wander, end in Trinidad their days. And this lovely fragrant island, with its forest hills sublime, Well might be the smiling Eden pictured in the Book divine. Cocoa woods with scarlet glory of the stately Immortelles, Waterfalls and fertile valleys, precipices, fairy dells, Rills and rivers, green savannahs, fruits and flowers and odours rich, Waving sugar cane plantations and the wondrous lake of pitch. Oh! the Bocas at the daybreak – how can one describe that scene! Or the little emerald islands with the sapphire sea between! Matchless country of Iere, fairer none could ever wish. Can you wonder at the legend of the cascadura fish ?
------------
I need you all to know that this poem about a key part of Trinidadian folklore, how we all return to the island’s shores to die if we’ve partaken of the mystical cascadura fish, is referring to the most prehistoric ass motherfucking animal

FAS3003 - Artist research - Althea McNish
Althea McNish – an introduction · V&A (vam.ac.uk)
I have decided to look at Trinidadian textile designer Althea McNish. McNish has made designs for furniture and fashion design that consists of movement, expression and contrasting colours. Her inspiration comes from the tropical flowers and plants of her native country Trinidad and incorporating them into Britain's nature landscapes. This has allowed McNish to form abstract, energetic and complex surface patterns.

How I found out my dear Trinidadian friend Robert, life of the party and one lived life to the fullest was gone
My dear friend Robert Solomon, who warmly welcomed me into his home and took me under his care when I’d moved to Trinidad and Tobago from my native Barbados in 2000. I didn’t post the birthday greeting on Robert’s page over the past week because Facebook notified me it was his birthday — I did so because I remembered his birthday. (In fact, I remember all of my friends’ birthdays.) I never…

SOCI 308 Blog Prompt #6
Tumblr media
(Above is my favorite Puerto Rican dish)
Being Hispanic/ Native American is one of the most prominent components of my identity. My mother is Puerto Rican and Trinidadian (Trini), while my dad is welsh, making me a melting pot. This significantly affects what I eat. Staple foods in Puerto Rico include Empanadillas, Rellenos de papa, Pasteles, Arroz con Gandules, Mofongo, and the list goes on (Raposo). Just about all these dishes include an ingredient called sofrito, which is a mix of peppers, onions, cilantro, garlic, and celery, and it's a staple in my household. I use sofrito in just about everything I cook. It's not the only Puerto Rican ingredient I use, there are a few others, but many dishes we make in my house have a Puerto Rican influence. We also don't have traditional American dishes for holidays. For example, we don't eat turkey for thanksgiving; we have duck, ham, or pork shoulder, all seasoned with a heavily Puerto Rican influence.
Raposo, J. (2022, September 12). 8 Puerto Rican dishes you shouldn't miss. Lunch Rush. Retrieved January 12, 2023, from https://www.ezcater.com/lunchrush/office/primer-puerto-rican-dishes-cuisine-try-ever-right-now/
