Here's To You Mrs Robinson
Paul Fitzpatrick: April 2024 Colin and I were recently invited to contribute to the TURNTABLE TALK section on Dave Ruch’s blog, ‘A Sound Day.‘, a great site to visit and satisfy your musical curiosity on all genres of music. Dave’s brief was to write about one of our favourite female artists to celebrate International Women’s Day. My thoughts turned immediately towards the likes of, Joni…

Kamala/ James Arthur Harris
Tumblr media
James Arthur “Kamala” Harris was a professional wrestler best known for his professional wrestling persona, Kamala, a fictional Ugandan giant. Harris was born on May 28, 1950, to Jessie Harris and Betsy Mosely in Senatobia, Mississippi. He had four sisters as well. Harris grew up in Coldwater, Mississippi where his family owned a furniture store. When he was four years old, his father was murdered after a dice game. Growing up, he worked as a sharecropper to help provide for the family. Harris dropout out of high school in the ninth grade and became a burglar.
In 1967, on the advice of police, Harris left Mississippi and moved to Florida where he worked a truck driver and fruit picker. He next moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan where he met a professional wrestler Bobo Brazil who became his trainer. In 1978, Harris made his professional wrestling debut as “Sugar Bear” Harris. One year later, in 1979 he won his first professional wrestling championship in the National Wrestling Association (NWA) Tri-State Tag Team competition with wrestler Oki Shikina. In 1980 he joined Southeastern Championship Wrestling as “Bad News” Harris and later that year won its championship. In 1982, Harris joined the Continental Wrestling Association (CWA) after being offer by a job by promoter Jerry O’Neal “The King” Lawler.
While wrestling for CWA, Lawler and another wrestling promoter, Jerry Winston Jarret, created a new wrestling character for Harris. This character, named Kamala, was a stereotypical Ugandan headhunter with face and body painting who was supposed to be the bodyguard of former President of Uganda Idi Amin. Harris then joined Mid-South Wrestling owned by promoter William Harris and remained with the organization until 1986.
Harris wrestled with other wrestling organizations during his career including World Class Championship Wrestling and the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment, WWE), and World Championship Wrestling before retiring in 2010 at the age of 60.
Despite his long successful wrestling career, Harris had numerous personal and health related issues. In 2011, had his left leg amputated below the knee due to complications from high blood pressure and diabetes. A year later, his right leg was also amputated below the knee. As a result of the amputations, a charity fund was set up to help with his financial needs.
In 2016, Harris was part of a class action lawsuit filed against World Wrestling Entertainment claiming that wrestlers received traumatic brain injuries during their time with WWE. Unfortunately for Harris and other wrestlers, the lawsuit was dismissed by Judge Vanessa Lynne Bryant in 2018.
Harris was married twice during his lifetime, first to Clara Freeman. That marriage ended in divorce. He later married Emmer Jean Bradley and that marriage lasted until his death. He was also father six children, five daughters and one son.
In 2017, Harris underwent lifesaving emergency surgery to clear fluid from around his heart and lungs. His health problems continued. He was hospitalized on August 5, 2020, after testing positive from COVID-19 during the pandemic in Mississippi. Four days later, on August 9, Harris died from complications from diabetes and COVID-19 in Oxford, Mississippi. He was 70.

Difference in their coming of age
So if you see my place at the top I have started with boomers, I find all the generational gaps fascinating and how we can like show different ways of being with different generations and what their Generations before them had taught them so we start with the boomers, and what they were raised like so they would have been raised by the Silent generation I believe or the greatest generation I forget between the two so there were two ways of being at this time.
my mum's are Boomer and she didn't rebellions her parents at all, whereas my uncle might of Here problems with alcohol and drugs so did my mom's sister so then in this generation you get the first generation of the real known groupies and the under age of it all, I don't know whether it is whether these Generations grow up faster or it just becomes more a topic that we look back on and think how the hell did that happen? I just think it's really interesting thing to look into and if you look at the covers of these girls and these magazines in the first roll of photos, you will see how young they look on the cover of star magazine.
They get a rap for getting all the money all the houses all the drugs and on the hardship which is technically true I mean G's I'm in a millennial and I'll be running into the rest of my life I've been in my place for us since 2016 so yeah as long as my dog has been alive. But some of these teenagers really rebelled who had sable star Laura Laurie Maddox ,bebe buelle ,and Pamela des bares.
When it came to the abuse in the industry, I think the Boom is took it actually the hardest as in it was more rampant than the further you go back even actually but of all these three Generations here I am talking about you see that they had to do with the the Harvey weinsteins, Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, of their times so they took it hard, but they were told to have a stiff upper lip ,and get on with it ,I think that's y early gen xers late boomers and even late gen x ers, have this complex that they should not feel a certain way about abuse and abuse in power .
Gen x were raised by early boomers and older greatest generation. Their generation rebelled more ,but in more aggressive way rather that Saturn in Pisces it was coming into aries /taurus punk movement then went , went to the grunge movement who are raised by the punk movement which makes sense unlike the boomers who were all happy dippy hippie Saturn in Pisces or Aquarius which you can really see of like the controversiality and the delusion representing acid and the weed whereas now Saturn is going into Aries and Taurus to signs that have horns are just gonna crash a grense things and be like hey I'm going to take this crap no more, see the gen x's I like millennials that don't talk about their pain I saw this the other day and that is the best way to put it don't fuck with a gen x so because you won't win, and then you have the subgroup but the xenialls!!! And that would be people born between 79 to say maybe 83 but Punk affected the gen x's I mean their generation compared to Milani holes and boomers are outstandingly small they even ended up in rehab, dead in prison or taking over the fucking world they are some strong motherfuckers.
So now the drugs of this time I forgot to talk about the late 70s early 80s which they were being raised by people who are on cocaine or crack or maybe even heroin.....
This generation raised the Kurt cobains to the Courtney loves the Spice Girls, TLC, NWA Rage Against the Machine, REM no doubt,Pamela Anderson, and so many more people .....
Then here come my fucked up generation millennials had at the hardest out of not having the best time out of these three groups when it came to the internet Revolution groups, because we were around when mobiles came out and we didn't really get along time as gen x is and boomerside we saw that little bit of greatness where you had those nights in the park getting drunk cause your friends before you are old enough to do so and also having the internet not affect it not checking your phone every 10 seconds to go and tick tock, I mean the music Now is just a disgrace programs now are just to me but maybe that's just getting old maybe that's just me so let's talk about millennials a bit or period is 1981 to 1994 yeah that's right!!we looked up to the gen x generation we were raised on spice Girls, a lot of us are just very tired ,I almost feel like we don't fit any the other group s including gen z because we gad the most hate on our bodies ,which sucks because we then get bullied online to by gen z and alpha !!! Very very sad .....we had paris hilton and Nicole richie , trisha pastas, holly Madison (just)I think ? Amy winehouse , Avril Levine, Britney, xtina , rihanna ,beyonce , ..so was some good uns taylor swift ,kim k ,cardi and nicki .justin beiber, and Timberlake.

It ain't hard to tell.

AEW All Access Ep 4 Thoughts
So Full Gear is in the books in the All Access timeline, but what developments do we have next for our cast members? Here's my thoughts on things
Man imagine having a home like a wrestler's? Full of merch, titles you've won spread over your walls, spacious and you don't have to fork out rent? Plus I'd definitely borrow Rey Mysterio's waterfall swimming pool from his home
Pretty telling that Kenny probably wouldn't have come back without the Bucks, it shows how much he backs his friends though
Knew that was coming Max, but man we got about 3 minutes worth of unpaid MJF footage there
Actually quite surprised Tay never broke anything, it's a good thing of course even I've never broke a bone but I haven't done 2 bloody street fights and a career of Judo so my path was a little safer
This series need 90% more Willow Nightingale too she would be great in this...okay 70% she was shown quite a bit but she needs to be a more prominent character
"It's pro-wrestling baby, somebody's always mad about something" ain't that the Truth, the whole Truth and even the R-Truth
See I know I gotta keep reiterating it, but wrestlers are people, and sometimes people don't get along but that doesn't make either bad people; Tay and Ruby don't get along, but they are still good people, Rosa and Britt don't get along, but they both want to do what's best for AEW
Need 80% more Ethan Page too
Ruby and Eddie's reunion too, warms the heart
We could just commission a whole series of 'Eddie Kingston and his friends', just have Eddie vibing and watching wrestling with his favourite people like Ruby, Ortiz, Moxley, Riho, Lulu, Penta etc.
I do feel bad for Rosa, because she's clearly motivated to return to the ring but it still hasn't happened, imagine not being able to do a job you love for months
I kinda miss Madi Wrenkowski, not as much as I miss KiLynn King but she was a good worker, liked her gear too. Both see and King are tag champs in other promotions if you didn't know (Madi is NWA women's tag champion as part of M95 and King is Knockouts Tag Champion as part of The Coven)
80% more Penelope too, though if she's taking more time for herself for personal reasons absolutely don't pry she has had a rough time
You know the heat is bad when Sammy Guevara, one of the most booed men in AEW, has to pause over it XD
Again though, we could've dedicated more time with showing Jamie directly rather than talking around her. Her story of becoming champion and the pressure of it mentioned here would've been interesting to see coming from her instead of mentioned by Tony and Britt
Since we got to see Cool Hand Ang I need to say AEW need to push 2point0 properly, they are charisma machines
Wardlow is just standing there, OMINOUSLY!
As I've said, Ruby and Tay are good people, but I do think Ruby was a bit iffy about doubting Tay saying it was an accident, I mean the move has a high margin for error (case in point Mercedes Moné fka Sasha Banks' first attempt at the Gory Special DDT on KAIRI completely missed) it felt like she was set on giving a receipt regardless

For you, my mind instantly went to one of my all-time favorite SW characters, Hera Syndulla. I can 1000000% picture Hera blasting (space) Foo Fighters and Fleetwood Mac in the cockpit of the Ghost while flying through the skies. She hasn't been home in a while, but she still loves to reminisce about the spring season on Ryloth, and would one day love to take you there. Or perhaps on a sunset flight through the clouds of Bespin. There's nothing that Hera loves more than flying and being in the skies with her loved ones around her.
You weren't sure how long you'd simply been idling in the sky, watching the clouds change color as the sun set on the horizon. And if someone asked you to describe the sunset on Bespin, you weren't sure you'd even have the words to describe the myriad of colors and beauty it held. They'd simply have to see if for themselves. The quiet ambience of the cockpit was broken by the beeping of your girlfriend's murderbot. It sounded like whining. If that were even possible. But you knew Chopper loved whining almost as much as he loved violence. "What did I tell you?" came the voice of your girlfriend. Hera popped out, her brows crunched with frustration. "Did you finish the repairs?" There was some indignant beeping and wobbling. Hera did not look impressed. "Uh-uh. Get to it." Chopper rolled away with no small amount of grumbling. And Hera sank into the pilot's chair with a groan. You simply couldn't help your laugh, leaning over to kiss her cheek. Hera's lip twitched up. "Kids these days, huh?" you joked. "Ergh, why is he so frustrating?" You knew Hera loved that droid more than just about anything, but she was right, he could be frustrating. "Hera, relax." You stood, coming to stand behind her, lightly massaging her shoulders through her ever-present flight suit. Hera's head drooped back, and she looked at you with grateful green eyes. "Thank you." You smiled and kissed her forehead. Hera looked forward again, a relaxed smile playing on her lips, and you wrapped your arms around her shoulders. She reached up, lightly tracing the floral tattoos on your arm, having memorized them long ago. And the two of you simply watched the sunset, a moment of respite amongst the chaos around you.
Found family request ❤️

I took a while to think on this one, because I wanted to get it right. But as soon as it hit me, a whole world of stuff popped into my head. So I envisioned you as a tattoo artist on Coruscant who suddenly saw an influx of clone troopers at the beginning of the war. When the Jedi encouraged them to give themselves nicknames, personalized armor, fun hairstyles, all that jazz, many of them branched out to get tattoos as well. I headcanon that Fives and Echo came in not long after "Rookies," Fives wanting to get something to remember his batchers by. Echo came by for moral support, not really being one for tattoos. But over the years, Fives started coming in with other brothers, always regaling you with stories of their latest missions and lots of bad jokes. So over time, I see Fives coming to see you as not only a friend, but the closest thing he's ever had to a sister. You become someone he can vent to when a mission has been particularly trying. Someone who always has snacks on hand. Someone who can give him shit but ultimately hugs him and tells him to be safe.
"Please tell me you're kidding." Fives' smile did not falter. And you had to suddenly pause in your work, the tattoo gun turning off and being set aside. "Nope." He popped the "p." "You should've seen in," Jesse said, relaxing a bit into the chair. He was lying on his side, blue ink glistening on his skin a bit in half-completed geometric patterns. Hardcase. You thought briefly of the more hyperactive clone. He'd always been fun. You'd miss him. But that wasn't the point right now. Right now, Fives was telling you all about the latest shenanigans of his general, who you could swear did not possess an ounce of impulse-control. "He had to know that jumping onto the back of an angry acklay was a bad idea." Apparently General Skywalker had a new scar or two to commemorate his latest victory. Fives and Jesse gave similar grins and shrugs. "It's General Skywalker," Jesse explained away. "Never know what he's going to do next." You shook your head, amazed how he was still alive, and turned back to Jesse's ribs. About twenty minutes later, Fives had not run out of things to tell you, but you'd finished working on Jesse. You lightly bandanged the new tattoo, going through the aftercare with Jesse. "Leave the bandage on for 1-3 hours, then wash with warm water and antibacterial soap. Pat dry and apply bacta cream. Do you need more?" "Nah, I've got some." "Good." You turned to Fives. "Do you need a touch up?" You weren't talking about the little number 5 on his forehead. Rather, the large hand print on his chest. "No, it's holding up. You do good work." You smiled at the compliment. You snapped off your gloves and got up from your chair, hugging Fives. "Be careful out there, okay?" You weren't sure the next time you were going to see him. Could be weeks. Could be months. Could be never again. "You know me," Fives chuckled hugging you warmly. "That's why I'm saying it." Fives laughed again. He kissed you on the cheek before stepping back, joining Jesse. "See ya, vod'ika." Your chest bloomed with warmth at the term. And you smiled as the pair left the shop. You really hoped you'd get to see them both again.

So for the dealer's choice, I went for a SW bestie. And for you, I chose the one and only Leia Organa. Honestly I could see the two of you palling around, complaining about homework and school in your favorite coffee shop. You two are regulars. The baristas know your names and orders by heart and can even tell when you're going to switch your order to a double concentrated cold brew or an iced vanilla latte by the way you two walk in to the place.
Leia had never quite grown out of the desire to run from the palace, even as a teenager. Long gone were the days where she snuck out to the woods with Lola, but she still found a relieving freedom in the days where you two walked from campus to the coffee shop you frequented to work on your respective piles of homework. Or more accurately, complain about your respective piles of homework. Because honestly, what were the instructors thinking, assigning 200 pages of reading, two research papers, and a group presentation just before you were due to go on break? You scowled over at your bag, where your pad and materials were packed away, ready to be worked on. You did not want to. Leia's parents had been gracious when their daughter had requested the opportunity to attend regular school. For a chance to live outside the palace, with more than just her tutors and diplomats for company. Leia excelled at school. When she wanted to. Your best friend's gaze was narrowed on her own pile of things, eyeing them like they were that cousin of hers she didn't like. Your lips twitched at the sight of it. "I could just order them to give me a passing grade," Leia was saying. You snorted. Leia would never actually abuse her position and status like that, but it was an amusing thought. "I'm not sure Nevsan would go for that." Leia rolled her eyes at the mention of your Economic Policy instructor. As ancient as he was stuffy, Nevsan was the type of instructor to brag at the beginning of each term that his class was the hardest you'd ever take. And the most important. It was neither, but his outdated lessons and archaic methods made the class frustrating. Even if Leia weren't a princess, with a position that required her to learn galactic economic policy, she would've had to take the class, as it was required for all students. Ugh. "Come on, we should get to work." But even as you said it, it was with a whine in your tone, and all you wanted to do was sink into the armchair beneath you and savor the delicious coffee in your hands. "Counter offer: we do shit." "I see your point." "Of course you do. Because I'm right, you're wrong, so shut up." You laughed.

While the MV plays like a movie, it still has MV aspects with a nice dance routine and making good use of a large set of backup dancers to create a more dynamic choreography. There is a different set of routines the dancers follow, along with different speeds which adds a touch of chaoticness to the dance. It is not strict and precise but rather purposefully messy. MIDNIGHT's own dance moves make good use of their straps in the choreography.

PAUL JACKSON ‘BLACK OCTOPUS’ (1978)
Paul Jackson (born in Oakland, California in 1947) needs little introduction. Paul began playing bass at the age of nine and was considered by many of his teachers to be a musical prodigy. Jackson was known as a “Musician’s Musician” and shaped a sound that launched a new direction in contemporary music: the so-called ‘Pulse Playing’, a trademark sound of close-meshed funk grooves combined with sensational rhythms. With this innovative approach, he influenced entire generations of jazz and funk musicians to come. Paul’s compositions were sampled by big acts from the likes of Prince, TLC, Mobb Deep and NWA…just to name a few.
Paul Jackson was a founding member of the Headhunters under Herbie Hancock (THEgroup responsible for their ground-breaking fusion and jazz-funk compositions that took the world by storm in the 70’s). The solid union between Hancock and Jackson has been especially evident in the many international tours they have made together…not to mention that he participated on most of the Headhunters albums and Herbie’s solo albums.
Paul has also worked as a producer and as a studio/live musician alongside acts such as Santana, Sonny Rollins and The Pointer Sisters. He was a frequent guest performer at renowned international festivals such as the Montreux and Newport events. Jackson’s composing has not gone without recognition and was nominated for Grammy Awards in 1974, 1975 and 1976. Like other highly talented, creatively motivated engineers of music, Paul has expanded his career to other mediums such as playing on blockbuster movie soundtracks such as “Death wish” and “Dirty Harry”.
Paul Jackson also wrote five solo albums worth listening to – including the monster of an album that is known as “Black Octopus” which is considered to be a kind of lost Headhunters album.
His debut album “Black Octopus” saw the light of day in 1978 and is a total piece of art filled with abstract sticky funky grooves, floating electric piano playing, strong thumping bass lines, raw heavy drums and amazing vocal acrobatics (Jackson himself takes vocals in 3 out of 5 songs, and his soulful singing voice strikes an emotional chord that does not go unnoticed).
On “Black Octopus” you’ll also find some of the best all-star musicians from the likes of Alphonse Mouzon (Roy Ayers, Betty Davis, Azar Lawrence)…and last but not least fellow Headhunters Bennie Maupin and Herbie Hancock himself.
With “Black Octopus” Paul Jackson wrote the book on how a jazz-funk-fusion album should sound like. The fact that the album was only distributed in Japan at the time (Jackson resided in Tokyo since the late 70’s, where he passed away in 2021) continues to increase its reputation as an album that is VERY hard to find. This is a must-have gem…not only for fans of jazz, funk and rare grooves, but also for DJs and collectors around the globe.
Tidal Waves Music in collaboration with Totown Records now proudly presents the first ever official reissue outside of Japan of this fantastic Jazz-Funk masterpiece (originally released in 1978 on Eastworld/Toshiba EMI). This rare record (original copies tend to go for large amounts on the secondary market) is now finally back available as a limited 180g vinyl edition (limited to 500 copies) complete with the original artwork and obi strip. I think it’s funny how Billy Corgan has been involved in managing pro wrestling promotions for over a decade now and after a few false starts went and bought the fading shadow of the National Wrestling Alliance which is the oldest active pro wrestling organization and formerly the most powerful one and whose titles were traditionally the most prestigious (because it used to be a “governing body” of pro wrestling ie; a cartel whose presidency rotated between promotions and whose members voted on who to make champ so even outside kayfabe being NWA champ meant the industry gave you a vote of confidence) and transformed it into a single promotion albeit one that regularly cooperates with other mid-tiers and like Billy Corgan almost never wants to use his own star power like he rarely if ever appears during NWA shows
Anyway NWA is personally my favorite of the mid tier promotions (though I think they all produce good stuff and I suggest wrestling fans check them all out) because they even do this neat 70s/80s revival aesthetic which points to the history of the brand and actually fits pretty nicely with how mid-tiers don’t have huge large crowds because it gives a vibe of old school studio wrestling especially. Like Corgan is the most famous person outside of wrestling to get involved with running a promotion and he just wants to sit back and run it from a distance and it’s like an old school revival thing idk I just feel like that’s double not what you’d expect from a celebrity that wants to run a wrestling show bc they liked wrestling as a kid

Ddt wrestling move

#DDT WRESTLING MOVE PRO#
Who was the worst? Raven was quick to fire friendly shots at a familiar ECW foe. There's guys like Kanyon who could spike themselves and stay with their head in the ground and their legs straight out like somebody threw a javelin and it landed in the grass. When you do a somersault, it looks like a somersault and it's actually more dangerous because you got the guy's next. "Guys always want to take a somersault, and I have to tell them a face plant looks so much better, because it looks like you got planted. Perhaps more importantly, is how the opponent takes the Evenflow. "The more your legs are at 90 degrees, it gives the illusion that they've gone in a different direction and that it's more sudden." "To make it look good, you have to kick your legs out and drop to your back as fast as you can," said Raven. According to the former NWA Worlds Champion, everything from leg placement, to how fast you fall plays a role. Raven's DDT is a little different than the version Jake "The Snake" Roberts made his go-to. If I have them by the left arm in a facelock, they'd take their left arm, spin out of it."Īfter the initial signifying introduction to the move, making it look good is the next task. If you always hit it suddenly as soon as you grab the neck, when you pause, people will go 'he's pausing so someone will reverse it.' I kinda stole that from Matt Hardy - the couple second thing. "When I'm not being lazy and just falling and do it right, I hook the guy, and give it a second or two," Raven explains "There has to be a space for someone to counter it. The setup that he uses, by his own admission, isn't as revolutionary, but eliminated predictability from longtime wrestling fans who recognize patterns in selling and counters. Raven's version of the popular move was revolutionary in its own right. You need a finish you can do to everyone," Raven told me, with the latter point being a sentiment often echoed when speaking to any wrestler about their finishing move. It's a pesticide that was banned in the 70's, so it's a really good name.

Fuzzy Feelings Causing Heart Palpitations
Fuzzy Feelings Causing Heart Palpitations by Blancfortune
Toshnori stared down at his successor, stuck in confused helplessness.
The child certainly couldn't work like this –not to mention he was already unconscious again– but Toshinori also couldn't send him home to an empty house. He would have accompanied the boy and taken care of him in his home but he didn't actually know where his successor lived.
Staying outside on a hazy beach was no option. Which left him with only one.

STING
Why Is Terry Funk Gunning For This Man?
No one can figure it out. Why is Terry Funk, a grizzled veteran of the sport, dead set on ending the career of Sting, one of wrestling’s hot young superstars? Funk’s own jealousy may be the reason he’s willing to go to any lengths ro rub Sting out!
Photos by Ted Field & Bob Smith
[Sting looks to smash Terry Funk into the timekeeper’s table (below). Funk knocks Sting out with his branding iron (bottom).]
THE LOCKER ROOM was strangely quiet, even more so that it would usually be after an injury had occurred. Sting, one of the most popular and respected wrestlers among his peers, was being carted in on a stretcher by several concerned friends. As the physician waved a bottle of smelling salts under his nose, the colorful young wrestler finally regained consciousness.
“What hit me?” he asked, his mind struggling to figure why he was in such pain. “Man, the back of my head feels like it’s been hit by a truck. What went down? Did I win the battle royal or what?”
“Sure, you won,” said Scott Steiner, one of those assisting him. “But Funk attacked you with his branding iron after the match. He took your winner’s check for $25,000 and ripped it up, too. You must've done something really awful to Funk to get him that mad at you.”
[Funk drags Sting around the ring. Fun’s feud with Ric Flair has led to brutal matches against the “Stinger.”]
“What do you mean?” asked Sting incredulously. “I’ve never done anything to that guy! First, he insulted me on a bunch of TV interviews. Then he attacks me for no reason at all. He wasn’t even in the battle royal! What the hell is going on around here?”
Indeed, Terry Funk’s ruthlessly dogged pursuit of Sting is one of the most surprising stories of the past several months. When Funk brutalized Sting in that post match attack, it displayed for the entire world the jealousy and hatred that the former NWA World champion harbors toward the young superstar. It was eerily similar to the attack Funk made on an unsuspecting Ric Flair after the “Nature Boy” regained the World title May 7 in Nashville, Tennessee.
“If there's anything that makes me puke, it’s a punk who’s gettin’ too big for his britches,” bellowed Funk in his usual manic style.
“There’s absolutely nothin’ about that guy I like. I don’t care for the way he looks, the way he talks, or the way he wrestles. And since he’s the TV champion, it gives me all the more reason to try to skin his damnable hide.”
Those words spoke volumes about Funk’s motivation for blindsiding Sting. Even in his prime during the ‘70s, when he spent 14 months as NWA World champion, Funk’s main goal was always money. When he won the title in 1975, he quickly proclaimed that he would soon become the richest man in the sport. He managed to do that (one 1976 poll named him among the 20 top moneymakers in sports), but he often escaped from his title matches by intentionally being disqualified or counted out.
In that regard, Sting is worlds apart from Funk. It is clear from his enthusiasm and drive that Sting wrestles for the love of the game and the competition, rather than for the financial rewards the sport brings. Wrestling gives Sting the opportunity to use his incredible athletic gifts to their fullest capacity.
[Attacks by Terry Funk have necessitated Sting being carried to the dressing room on a stretcher on several occasions. Sting certainly won't take this lying down!]
“Hey, I wrestle ‘cause I enjoy the thrills baby,“ insisted Sting after recovering from Funk’s attack. “It seems funk would rather cheat his way to victory, but I’m more of a competitor than that. It’s also pretty apparent that Funk is jealous. Why else would he attack a guy he hasn’t even wrestled yet? I think Funk knows that young stars like me are rising to the top faster than he ever could, and his ego just can’t deal with it.”
Sting’s claim may have a great deal of validity. The Texan sees Sting being touted as a future world champion, while the Funk name is considered a relic by many fans. It is a fact that gnaws at his soul.
“All that high-flying stuff Sting does don’t impress me,” complained Funk. “And that scorpion leglock may be deadly to most of his opponents, but something like that is child’s play for a veteran like me to break. Just wait'll you see what I do to that punk when I get my hands on him. I’ll show the whole damn world what a real wrestler is like.”
What Funk actually showed was how desperate a man can get. When Sting and Funk finally locked up in Boston near the end of the Bash tour, Funk’s incessantly vile tactics forced the action out of the ring throughout most of the match. At one point, Sting was dominating the bout when Funk removed the tape from around his wrist and used it to try to strangle his game opponent.
Sting battled back valiantly against everything Funk could throw at him–until Norman the Lunatic ran into the ring, forcing the referee to disqualify Funk. Sting managed to capture Norman in a scorpion leglock, but Funk grabbed a chair and brought it down hard over Sting’s head, leaving the young star unconscious.
“Another match, another sneak attack,” said Sting, rubbing his head afterward. “You know, I used to read all the time about what proud people Terry and Dory Funk were. Now, all Terry does is cheat and rely on outside interference. But what’s his point? It seems to me that Funk is older and just not as good as he used to be. If you ask me, the guy is yesterday’s news–and he knows it.”
“He was lucky to escape with his life tonight,” laughed Funk after the match. “He called me yesterday’s news? The next time I get my hands on that punk, he's gonna be the one who’s history.”
Once again, Terry Funk has made headlines with his sadistic actions. First, he attacked Ric Flair. Now, he’s brutalized Sting. Funk will go to any lengths in order to prove he’s still a viable contender. But as a result of his actions, he’s now got two of wrestling’s biggest stars trying to eliminate him. Perhaps he’s made too much of an impression.
