Withdraw ‘misleading’ Bournvita ads, packaging and labels, says NCPCR
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights issued a notice to Mondelez International, India after allegations that Bournvita has high sugar content that could be harmful to children.
Tumblr media
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has issued a notice to Mondelez International, India – the company that makes Bournvita – to withdraw all misleading advertisements, packaging and labels after allegations that it has a high sugar content that could be harmful to children.
In its notice on Wednesday, the NCPCR has said that it has taken cognizance of the matter under Section 13(1)(j) of the Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CPCR) Act after having received a complaint that alleges that Bournvita, which promotes itself as a health powder/health drink that promotes a child’s growth and development, “contains a high percentage of sugar” and substances which could cause “harmful impact to the health of children”.
“The Commission in this regard observes that the product manufactured by your company is misleading the customers through its product packaging and advertisements. The Commission observes that your product’s labelling, packaging, display and advertisements claims are misleading for the general public. Further your product’s labelling and packaging also fails to acknowledge the correct information regarding the content used in the product – Bournvita,” the commission said in its notice.
The notice further says that Bournvita fails to display “mandatory disclosures in line with the guidelines and regulations of the Food Safety Standard Authority of India and under the Consumer Protection Act”.
The commission observes that Bournvita “prima facie” seems to have bypassed the threshold of added sugar with the use of labels ‘Maltodextrin’, ‘Liquid Glucose’ which needed to be displayed under the title of “added sugar”, according to the FSSAI’s Labelling and Display Regulations, 2020.
The NCPCR has further said that prima facie, another FSSAI regulation seems to have been violated by Bournvita which says that the claims (made by the product) will specify the “number of servings of the food per day for the claimed benefit”.

Teachers need to be trained in encouraging queer kids, taking steps to ameliorate bullying and showing acceptance. One such effort was undertaken by the NCERT which put out a teacher-training manual that could be a good first step towards helping queer children. It was pulled down after the opposition from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, and the right wing. Members of the committee were trolled, and some were transferred. If the NCPCR was as concerned as it seemed to be when it filed an intervention in the marriage equality case to oppose adoption by queer people, why is it silent on the death of numerous queer kids? Does the mandate of the NCPCR only cover cis-gender, heterosexual kids? The NCPCR has failed in its primary duty by failing to protect queer kids.

Rihanna's Savage X Fenty Scores Worse Than Shein In Ethical Practices
Tumblr media
US popstar Rihanna is facing backlash after Legal Rights Observatory filed a complaint with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) of India against the brand.
Her company launched in 2017, Fenty Beauty, was recently reported for allegedly sourcing mica from mines in Jharkhand which employ child labour. Fenty Beauty's connection to "blood mica" became a major topic of discussion.
Tumblr media
Priya Kulkarni from the United States wrote, "Fenty Beauty Brand is under the lens in India for using mica from mines hiring child labour."
It was also brought attention to that it was in violation of the California act, which stipulates audits for companies to ensure that there is no child labour or slavery involved in merchandise.
Taking to Twitter, Poonam from London wrote, "So glad I no longer use #FentyBeauty...of the products I have used...it's COMPLETE trash. I will NEVER support makeup brands for using mica or exploiting child slave labour...So much for being 'vegan' and 'cruelty-free' #ashy #basicbitchmakeup #boycottFenty."
Now, another controversy has been brought to light over her Savage X Fenty line reportedly scoring 'worse than Shein' in ethical practices. This is after some buyers were complaining that the clothing material was flimsy and ripped after limited use.
Ask where a Savage X Fenty product comes from and this is what its country of origin label will tell you: "Imported."
Contacted to explain, one Savage X Fenty customer service officer gave the following reply. "I know SXF items are not made in the US," they stated. "Only assembled and processed." Another replied, "I do not know. I am very sorry."
Tumblr media
SXF is among the lowest-ranking companies on Remake's 2022 Fashion Accountability Report, scoring a meager four points out of a possible 150, demonstrating an utter lack of transparency and accountability in all of the assessment categories. For context, the average score of the 58 companies analyzed in the report was 14, with even ultra-fast fashion brand Shein outranking SXF. Remake's scoreboard for the brand concludes that the company "blatantly disregards industry standards when it comes to social and environmental disclosures, merely noting on its website that products are 'imported.'"
The company doesn't report on its carbon emissions or indicate any carbon reduction targets. Most of its products use oil-based synthetic materials, and the brand has set no clear targets to move away from these materials. Alarmingly, SXF lacks even a Supplier Code of Conduct to define guidelines for assessing factories' compliance with international labour standards, especially in regard to workers' health and safety. This disconnect is striking; we see a brand profiting from using feminism and inclusivity as core elements of its marketing and branding, while at the same time neglecting to put in basic safeguards to protect workers in its supply chain, 80% of whom are women.
What's more, SFX was fined $1 million by Santa Clara County and four other California local governments for defrauding customers by automatically enrolling them in a "VIP" program with recurring monthly credit card charges without their knowledge. The lawsuit also detailed that SXF's website improperly advertised the ability to use store credit and misled customers about the store's products.
"Consumers have a right to know up front what they are paying for and how often," Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Deng said in a statement. "And businesses have a duty to be transparent about their automatic renewal charges."
The company's actions "were likely to deceive members of the public and were performed with that intent," the complaint said.

Empowering Children: Understanding the POCSO Act
The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, introduced in 2012, is a crucial legal framework aimed at safeguarding children from sexual abuse and exploitation. This act is especially beneficial to school children as it provides them with legal protection and support in several ways.
1. Prevention and Punishment: The POCSO Act defines various forms of sexual abuse and prescribes stringent punishments for offenders. This acts as a deterrent and helps prevent such crimes against school children.
2. Child-Friendly Procedures: The act emphasizes child-friendly procedures for reporting, recording, and trial of offences. This ensures that children are not re-traumatized during legal proceedings, promoting a safe and supportive environment for them to seek justice.
3. Special Courts: The act mandates the establishment of special courts for speedy trial of POCSO cases. This ensures that justice is delivered swiftly, reducing the trauma and stress experienced by child victims and their families.
4. Confidentiality and Protection: The identity of the child victim is kept confidential throughout the legal process. Additionally, the act provides for the protection of the child victim and witnesses, ensuring their safety and well-being.
Rehabilitation and Support: The act recognizes the need for rehabilitation and support for child victims. It mandates the provision of medical, psychological, and social support services to help them recover from the trauma of sexual abuse.
5. The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act is a legal framework enacted by the Government of India to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation. While there isn’t a specific contact number for the POCSO Act itself, if you or someone you know needs assistance or wants to report a case of child sexual abuse, you can contact the following:
6. Child line India: Dial 1098 (toll-free) to reach Childline India, a 24-hour helpline for children in distress. They can provide information, support, and guidance on child protection issues, including those related to the POCSO Act.
Local Police: You can also contact your local police station or the nearest child welfare committee to report cases of child sexual abuse or seek assistance under the POCSO Act.
7. National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR): While not a direct contact for reporting cases, the NCPCR is a statutory body that monitors implementation of child rights, including those under the POCSO Act. Their website (ncpcr.gov.in) provides information and resources related to child protection.
It’s important to note that if you suspect a child is being sexually abused, it is crucial to report it immediately to the authorities or seek help from a trusted organization to ensure the safety and well-being of the child.
In summary, the POCSO Act is a crucial legal framework that provides significant benefits to school children by ensuring their safety, protection, and access to justice in cases of sexual abuse and exploitation. It plays a vital role in creating a safe and secure environment for children to learn, grow, and thrive.

India e violenze ai bambini ...a centinaia, migliaia
Tumblr media
